WALT DISNEY WORLD

Ernesto Changes Route of Disney Magic

"'The advantage of a cruise vacation is that you can change the ship's itinerary to avoid bad weather,' said Disney Cruise Lines spokeswoman Rena Langley. 'We'll be monitoring it over the next few days.'

Disney changed the schedule for the Disney Magic, which departed from Port Canaveral on Sunday, from a western to an eastern Caribbean cruise, Langley said."

Theme Parks are keeping a close watch on the path of the storm and so far it's business as usual.
(Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/29/06)

Update:

"... with forecasters predicting nothing more than a big, rainy mess, businesses ranging from the area's three main theme parks to hotels to shopping malls said they expected to be open today... Port Canaveral is scheduled to remain closed today and reopen Thursday morning. Officials expect Disney and Carnival cruise ships to dock there by midday Thursday, later than usual." Disney celebrates technology, democracy and faith in the future

Now that Pluto has been reclassified as a dwarf planet, the seven dwarfs have issued this statement:

"Although we think it's DOPEY that Pluto has been downgraded to a dwarf planet, which has made some people GRUMPY and others just SLEEPY, we are not BASHFUL in saying we would be HAPPY if Disney's Pluto would join us as an 8th dwarf. We think this is just what the DOC ordered and is nothing to SNEEZE at." (Source: Disney Press Release, 08/25/06)

Florida Butterflies Are Worth A Look

"These days, butterfly exhibits and gardens in Central Florida are drawing everyone from schoolchildren to photographers to hobbyists intent on raising the winged insects themselves. In Central Florida, at least three venues -- Lukas [Nursery & Garden Shop] exhibit, Cypress Gardens [Wings of Wonder] in Winter Haven, and the Florida Museum of Natural History's Butterfly Rainforest in Gainesville -- let guests walk among the creatures in enclosed spaces. Butterfly gardens also have popped up in city and county parks and area zoos as well as in yards and on condo-dwellers' balconies."

Branson will celebrate the King of the Cowboys and the Queen of the West in style September 15, 16 and 17 at The Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum. Steve writes about the Disney Dining Plan:

"We just got back from the World and had a great time. Took advantage of the Stay and eat free (Disney Dining Plan) promotion being offered in late August and September. As always the food was fantastic.

Some advice if you purchase the dining plan. Make sure to make all reservations early. We had our Table services booked 3 months in advance, but I cant tell you how many people I saw that where turned away, because restaurants where booked up for the day and taking no walk-ins.

We did try to eat at Sci-Fi in MGM for a counter service lunch and couldn't get in. The Buffet at Hollywood and Vine was fantastic, it allowed us reserved seating for Fantasmic.

Also the Fantasia pool at the All Star Movies has a leak and will be closing sometime in Late Sept. or Early October for repair. We've been there 16 times and this was one of the best times."
=================================================
MAGICAL BEGINNINGS

Magical Beginnings is a new Disney program which features entertainment for young children during the months of August and September. The program includes one hour of early access to certain rides in Magic Kingdom's Fantasyland as well as a Playhouse Disney in Concert series at MGM featuring children's entertainment:

* Imagination Movers 9/18 - 9/24
* Mickey's Magic Show! 8/24 - 8/27
* The Wiggles® 8/29 - 9/1
* Johnny and the Sprites 9/2 - 9/10
* Ralph's World 9/11 - 9/16
* Dan Zanes and Friends 9/25 - 9/30

For a list of current activities, see Disney's official site

There seems to be some confusion about getting tickets to these shows. Intercot.com) states:

"Studios Cast have been informed that concerts that are deemed to have 'high popularity' will have a special admission process. The process will entail FastPasses for each of the scheduled show times for that day being distributed at the Lights, Motors Action! Stunt Show FastPass kiosks. Admission to these select performances will only be granted to those guests who have obtained a FastPass for the showing. Currently the only offering to be announced to have this special Admission are the Wiggles performances on August 29 - September 1."

NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD"

WALT DISNEY WORLD

"Question: So now I can't even take shampoo in my carry-on bag when traveling by air? I travel light and don't need to check my bag. Do I really have to make time to buy shampoo at each destination?

Answer: You have three options: Start checking your luggage, complete with as many bottles of shampoo as you like. Use the shampoo supplied in your hotel room. Or purchase single-application sachets of shampoo, conditioner and styling products such as those made by Beauty-id. Boxes of 20 sachets of each product are available online at beautyideas.com for $18.50 per box." Regarding cosmetics, use products that last longer. (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/18/06)

Ashley writes:

"My husband and I honeymooned at WDW from April 16-23, 2006. It was amazing. This was my 5th trip and his 1st. We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside, in Magnolia Bend. Our room was wonderful, and the noise was not bad.

We included the dining package, and it is a must!!!! We ate at Cinderella's royal table which was absolutely amazing. When the cast members realized that we were on our honeymoon, we were given the best table in the entire restaurant which had a view overlooking the carousel. They had decorated our table with a heart shape out of Mickey shaped confetti. It was truly magical.

We also ate at Whispering Canyon Cafe at the Wilderness Lodge. this is my favorite Disney restaurant. However, our server made us go to the front of the entire restaurant and reenact our wedding day kiss. It was really embarrassing, but so much fun.

Our first day at Disney we wore our bride and groom baseball caps. A cast member saw it and told us to go to city hall and get a congratulations pin. We got a lot of special attention just for being on our honeymoon.

Staying at Port Orleans was not bad, just bus issues. One day at the magic kindom, we were waiting for our resort bus, which had just left. A cast member in a van called us over and asked where we needed to go to, and we told him. He then pointed us to a bus and told the driver to take us to our resort. We were the only ones on the bus, and when we got to our resort, everyone was staring and we were [wondering] why. We discovered that the front of the bus had said vip. We laughed and thought it was funny.

We went to downtown Disney one evening, and it was horrible. It was so congested with construction that it was very difficult to maneuver around. We also had the water park and more option, we did not even have time to use it. My husband says that on our next trip, we will stay at the same resort.

Another good restaurant was Ohana. The food was really good, but it is a lot of food. It has a really fun environment. We caught the fireworks on the beach of the Polynesian and it was really relaxing and nice.

A must see show is Fantasmic. For our wedding we walked out to the exit theme from Fantasmic. Seeing this show was so worth the wait, it is spectacular!!! Fantasmic was our favorite fireworks show, and it really made our wedding feel more special knowing that what we exited to ended up being a mass parade of characters on a boat.

We look forward to returning to Disney soon."

* A new attraction is coming in 2007 to the Magic Kingdom based on the Laugh Floor Comedy Club from Monsters Inc.

Disney has created a site where parents and children can learn about park safety. Parents with safety concerns will want to read the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Report on Safety which is "the first edition of a publication developed specifically to provide our Guests, community and business partners, and shareholders with a better understanding of the steps we take to make our properties safe for the millions of people who visit each year."

Two new programs will debut this Fall when Disney's "Year of a Million Dreams" kicks in:

Disney Engagements - "staffers will help you pick out just the right spot to pop the question. They'll even arrange (for a price, of course) to have your fiancee's favorite character on hand to share this special moment. Or -- better yet -- have fireworks streak across the sky when she says 'Yes."

Disney Couture Weddings - "Disney design teams will work closely with the bride-to-be to make sure that this high-priced affair ($100,000-$250,000) will be one that her friends & family will talk about for ages. Her every wish will be Disney's command." (Source: Jim Hill Media, 08/09/06)

Travel Tips to be Prepared for Enhanced Security

"The Transportation Security Administration announced new rules Sunday giving airline passengers permission to carry up to 4 ounces of liquid nonprescription medicine. TSA had previously banned all liquid medications.

TSA also said all passengers will be instructed to remove their shoes during security checks. The shoes have to be placed on an X-ray belt for screening before passengers can put them back on...

In other measures, TSA said it would let flyers carry treatments for low blood sugar, including glucose gel for diabetics; solid lipstick; and baby food. But it said all aerosols are prohibited.

On Saturday, the TSA added mascara to the list of banned items, which includes baby teethers containing gel or liquid, children's toys containing gel and gel candles."

For a list of prohibited items, click here.

Overbooked? You have rights!

Airlines

"If you're denied boarding on an oversold flight, U.S. carriers, by law, must refund your ticket or let you use it for another flight and they may owe you up to $400." For details, see:
http://airconsumer.ost.dot.gov/publications/flyrights.htm

Rental Cars

You should receive an upgrade at the quoted price or "insist that the agent obtain a comparable vehicle from a competitor or ask whether one will be available soon. Or get the company to pay for a taxi to your hotel and deliver your car later."

Hotels

"If you show up with confirmed reservations and there's no room at the inn, the solution is straightforward: Expect the hotel to find you a comparable room at another hotel, pay for transportation there and pick up the tab for the night... If you're inconvenienced... Ask for a manager. Suggest a room upgrade, a discount, free meals or other compensation." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/10/06)

Now the folks at Disney have made traveling with little ones easier than ever with their new Magical Beginnings... a new program devoted to families with toddlers or preschoolers. "Starting Sunday, the cost of a one-day ticket to any of Walt Disney World's four parks is going up to $67 -- a 6.3 percent increase, the largest since 1991... The new increases cover most but not all of Disney's ticket prices. Magic Your Way tickets will see prices go up at all levels, about 3 percent to 6 percent. Disney's Park Hopper feature, which allows people to attend any of its parks, goes up $5 to $45. Yet water-park tickets remain the same, as do Florida resident three-day theme-park tickets."

"The daily parade at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is losing its snow globes and getting a touch of Japan. The 'Disney Dreams Come True' parade starts rolling Aug. 10 with new music borrowed from the Tokyo Disneyland parade, new characters and revised floats that get rid of the giant globes that were signature features in the old 'Share a Dream Come True' parade." Disney Waives Fees During Tropical Storm Warnings

"During the 2006 hurricane season, in the event a hurricane warning is issued by the National Hurricane Center for the Orlando area or for the guest's place of residence within 7 days before the scheduled arrival date, the guest may call in advance to reschedule or cancel their Walt Disney Travel Co. Magic Your Way vacation package without any cancellation or change fees imposed by Disney.

This policy also applies to most Walt Disney World Resort room-only reservations booked directly with Disney, as well as reservations at Disney's Vero Beach Resort or Disney's Hilton Head Island Resort in the event a hurricane warning is issued for those destinations." (Source: WDW Press Release, 08/04/06)

"Universal is offering people a chance to cancel or reschedule anytime a named storm threatens, whether or not a specific hurricane warning is issued for Orlando or their hometowns. Universal calls it a 'no questions asked' policy... SeaWorld also has a general policy allowing people to cancel or reschedule because of hurricanes, but it's informal." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/04/06)

Disney is targeting Blacks and Hispanics with a new marketing campaign and changes in the parks. "Some possibilities include offering theme-park shows in Spanish and ensuring that some of the princesses and other characters who roam the parks and interact with guests do so in Spanish. Now those characters only interact with tourists in English." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/03/06)

In a related story, the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau is going to focus on attracting Gay tourists. "And though Disney doesn't officially acknowledge Gay Days, its resort is the focal point of the event that drew 140,000 people this year." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 08/03/06)

Renea writes:

"Hello John!

We just returned from our 6 day trip to Disneyworld on Sunday, July 16, 2006.

We stayed the first night at the La Quinta Inn & Suites on Polynesian Isle Blvd in Kissimmee.

This stay was on a 'free night certificate' because 2 years ago we stayed at the La Quinta on Jamaican Court, International Drive and it was awful! The place was dirty and a woman was getting beat up in the room behind us.

The La Quinta in Kissimmee was awesome. We payed $30 more and were upgraded to a kids suite. The property was clean and the employees were very nice. I would recommend this property to someone who didn't want to spend a lot of $ in Orlando. There is also a new Walmart within walking distance.

We checked in to the Grand Floridian (this was our 6th time there) on Wednesday. We had a lagoon view room but they upgraded us to the Main building. If anyone can afford to stay here I highly recommend it.

The hotel is a 5 star and is immaculate. The cleaning people were actually polishing the door jams on the floor at 1 a.m.!

The food in Concierge is non stop and the service is outstanding! Anything you need they give you.

FYI: the other concierge building (the Sugarloaf) will be closed in January for refurbishment.

We are hoping to go back in February of 2007, we will see.

That’s all for now."

2007 Walt Disney World Magic Your Way Vacation Packages have been released.

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I'm very disappointed that they still didn't come up with longer tickets. 10 days is still the max, but now you can do up to 14 nigh stays so they WILL allow you to add on a second ticket to cover all your days - but no discount on the second ticket. (In other words, ticket days 5-10 are still costing you next to nothing, but then you'll pay big bucks again for days 11-14.)

In my opinion, aside from being able to do 14-night stays now, the best change is that they've adjusted the premium and platinum plans. These plans are very high-powered with all your meals included, unlimited backstage tours, Cirque tickets, recreation, and more. Previously, they only came with length-of-stay premium tickets (hopping and water parks), but for 2007 you can book them with ANY ticket meaning a 1-day base ticket is just fine.

This is huge for people that have been there many times and really want to focus on dining and many of the non-park things. After all, there's SO much included with these plans that you hardly have time for theme parks! These plans are perfect for adults just looking for an all-inclusive getaway without the kids, especially if one or both people like to golf. It's also nice for annual pass holders and people that already have existing tickets from previous stays."

See our book, "Secrets To An Affordable Walt Disney World® Vacation," for a breakdown of the 2007 vacation packages.
