Beth, our travel agent, writes about the balloon ride at Downtown Disney:

"Up, up and away!

One of the coolest things about being a travel agent that specializes in Disney products is that the non-Disney vendors go out of their way to get your attention. In this case, we were all given vouchers for a free ride at Characters in Flight, the helium balloon ride in Downtown Disney. This attraction opened last spring and is located near Planet Hollywood, just over the West End bridge. Adults are $16, kids (ages 3-9) are $10. We did this on a Saturday evening. The line looked short, but moved VERY slowly. It turns out that the number of people who can board each flight depends on the wind. It was quite gusty that evening, so they only took five people at a time. Once we paid, we were given boarding passes and sent over to a gate.

When the group in front of us boarded, we were let through to wait for our turn. There are just a couple of easy steps up into the balloon (which looks like a big hot air balloon, minus the flames) and a circular walkway around the 'basket.' We were told to spread out evenly and hang onto the rail for the trip up. The tether rolled off its spool rather quickly and it wasn’t long at all until we were up to maximum height (400 feet) and told we could walk around. The view up there is amazing, but you really can’t see much park-wise aside from Spaceship Earth. The view is probably better during the day - but it’s still pretty cool at night! We were only up there maybe five minutes before the descent started. The duration, start to finish, was about 10 minutes.

I’m not crazy about heights and I do get motion sick, both of which were listed as reasons to NOT do this ride, but I went anyway and was 100% fine on both counts. I should also mention that I’m a total wimp when it comes to rides… Test Track is the most daring thing I do (and I don’t enjoy it). I had no trouble with this, though, nor did the other four people (including an eight-year-old girl).

Is it worth the money? Well, it is a cool thing to do, and if you’ve never been in a balloon before it’s a good way to get the basic feel of it. There’s pretty much zero chance that you’ll float away, and it’s a great ride for nearly everyone in the family, BUT it can be a very long wait for a very short ride and I don’t really think I’ll be doing it again anytime soon if I have to pay for it. Nice to do once, not worth doing it twice."

Hi Everyone!

Merry Christmas to all of you from all of us at AffordableDisney.Com!

May the joy and peace the Christ Child brought to us 2000 years ago be with you now and forever!

--------------------------------

Donna and I just received a deal from Disney via email that is not available to the general public. It offered the Value Resorts at 30% off, the Moderate Resorts at 35% off, and the Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villa Resorts at 40% off on select dates from January to June, 2010! It requires a pin # so I can't share it with you. Here's what Beth says about improving your chances of getting a similar deal:

"Some people may have heard about email promotions. If you sign up for specials at the Disney website, are a Disney Blast subscriber, etc., you might get these from time to time. They are the same as the post card deals, though: recipient-specific and you must have the pin number. (So no, you can't get the number from you friend at work because you're name wouldn't match.)" To increase your chances of getting an email deal, our advice is to sign up for everything that Disney offers, from sweepstakes to the Disney Rewards Visa.

--------------------------------

NOTE: If you want to visit Walt Disney World when there is no deal for the general public, you will need to follow the discount strategies that are revealed in our online book, "Secrets To An Affordable Walt Disney World® Vacation," to make your vacation affordable.

GINGERBREAD EVERYWHERE!

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"Recently I watched a Food Network challenge where two top-notch bakers were creating giant gingerbread houses. One designed a simple house, but executed the plan beautifully. The other designed a really amazing house, but suffered one calamity after another and barely finished at all. I couldn’t help but think that he could have really used the help of the food artisans at Disney’s Beach Club Resort.

Four weeks ago I was lucky enough to enter the Beach Club lobby when the baking team was about half finished with their annual edible carousel and the giant partial gingerbread house they sell baked goods from. I was amazed to see that the long, rectangular 'bricks' of gingerbread were very flexible. No cracking here! I asked the cast member applying the 'bricks' just how they managed to create cookies that acted like thin strips of rubber. She explained that they make the cookies with honey rather than molasses, and they start months in advance so that the honey-flavored base for the dough could absorb moisture from the air. A week or so prior to needing the cookies, they mix the honey starter with the rest of the ingredients and bake the cookies. The result is a cookie that lies flat, is perfectly formed, and is very flexible.

The Food Network chefs used two different 'glues' for their cookies. One used chocolate and that seemed to work well, although under the hot lights of the cameras and stage, I’m not sure why it worked so well. The struggling team used (or tried to use) royal icing. Each batch was a different consistency, it took too long to set up, and they ended up with chunks dropping off the house. The Beach Club cookies are glued onto the walls with egg whites. I was told that egg whites work perfectly for this – and they sure seemed to! The cast member just had a big bowl of plain old gloopy egg whites that she dipped her big paint brush into and applied to the back of the cookie. Then she stuck it on the wall, maneuvered it a bit into place, and that was that!

As with the Food Network chefs, Disney chefs use royal icing piped between the bricks to look like grout. Interestingly, though, the Disney gang makes up a mixture of watered down chocolate that they brush over the bricks after they’ve dried into place to give the walls more character.

If you ever get the chance to see these food artists at work, don’t miss it. The whole thing was really fascinating, and the result both looks impressive and smells heavenly."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Disney Meetings & Conventions:

"No matter how many of these things I go to on Disney property, I’m always amazed and impressed by the quality of what they provide. I’ve been to good meetings elsewhere, of course, but you can really get a taste for the 'Disney difference' after doing just one done in their style.

Contrary to popular belief, doing a meeting or convention at Disney doesn’t cost anything more than doing it at another 4-star property would - and you do NOT need a giant herd of people in order to hold such a gathering. It all starts with a contract for the accommodations. Your group gets a preferred rate which can extend several days pre-and post-meeting so that they (and their families, if you want) can enjoy all Disney has to offer without working around your meeting schedule. You’ll need to put a deposit down on the space, but that’s refundable up to a certain date. By that time, you need to provide a full rooming list as well as final payment. Along the way, you can work with meeting planners (or your travel agent!) to set up meeting space, catering, special events, and more. Meeting attendees also have access to discounted park tickets.

The special events are limited only by your imagination and your budget. Take the convention I just attended… The dinner on opening night was held on the 'stage' part of the Lights, Motors, Action stunt show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A live band played while guests made their way around numerous food and beverage stations and dined at beautifully decorated tables. We were then led over to see the Osborne Family lights. The park was closed, so it was just us! Then we were led to Pixar Place (previously called Mickey Avenue), the tree lined 'street' in front of Toy Story Mania. The street had a variety of dessert and beverage stations mixed with candlelit tables, all leading to a DJ at the end of the row. We got to ride Toy Story Mania as much as we wanted (no waiting!) and Buzz and Woody were on hand for photos. OK, so this is sort of a big budget example, but the point is that you can really do whatever you want and it can be very reasonably priced if you’re just after private fireworks viewing or a dessert party or something like that.

I should also point out that you don’t have to be a company to do this sort of thing… If you’re a scrap booker, for instance, and have lots of 'scrappy' friends, you can hold a two or three day event filled with seminars and how-to sessions and even an exhibitor area where companies can sell and/or advertise their wares to your attendees. Of course, they pay for their space, so that offsets some of your event cost. And true Disney fans are generally willing to pay in order to do fun stuff that they wouldn’t be able to do on their own (special backstage tours, private access to parties, etc.). I also should mention that if you’re not a detail-oriented person yourself, or just don’t have the time, these things can be planned by others with minimal effort on your part. In fact, when I do them, I generally handle ALL the details and my fee is covered by the commission from the room sales. All my clients have to do is find the attendees!

If you have any questions at all on how you can set up your own meeting, convention, or gathering please don’t hesitate to ask!"

Beth, our travel agent, writes about ADVENTURES BY DISNEY:

"I’ve mentioned this relatively new Disney endeavor before, but I recently had the opportunity to hear four of the guides speak about the work they do and I was really impressed. For those of you who have never heard of Adventures by Disney (AbD), you need to wipe out every concept you’ve ever had of what a 'tour group' entails and start from scratch. This is, after all, the Disney version. What it is NOT, though, is a chance to travel the world with Mickey. In fact, there isn’t a character involved in these trips at all. The 'Disney' aspect of it is limited to the quality of the tour itself and the caliber of service you get. Think 'Tours by Ritz Carlton' or maybe 'Travel with the Waldorf Astoria'.

Also, wipe out the idea that this is travel for families. It can be, but taking kids with you isn’t a necessity. In fact, on some departures, children aren’t allowed! The groups that do have children include special activities for them and even opportunities for the parents to go out while the staff does a little magical babysitting for you.

Where does AbD go? All over the place: Australia, China, South Africa, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, multiple North America destinations including Alaska, Wyoming, the Southwest, and mid-Atlantic, and a long list of European destinations as well. Tours generally last six to twelve nights, depending on the itinerary.

What makes Disney different from other tour companies? The first thing is the service. Each group consists of about 40 participants, give or take, and they are accompanied by TWO Adventure Guides that are handpicked and trained by Disney to provide a high level or personal attention and service. They really try to get to know each group member and provide an experience that will make the trip special to that person. Most tour groups are way too large to pull off something like that.

The activities cover all the 'must do' things for tourists along with many things that the general public doesn’t’ have access to. In addition, every effort is made to eliminate lines. For instance, the groups often bypass attraction lines and go straight in even when there are long lines waiting, and you never have to deal with checking into the hotels. The Adventure Guides are assisted by local experts who not only provide great stories and interesting facts, but also hands-on activities. You don’t just WATCH a farmer milk a goat, YOU milk the goat! (If you want to, of course.) And don’t be surprised if, while traveling the Fairytale Route, Little Red Riding Hood literally runs into you in the street. This is, after all, Disney.

I should also mention that your travel is top-notch all the way, from comfy touring coaches to first-class rail cars, and the hotels used are top of the heap as well. You stay in grand lodges, ancient castles, and beautiful hotels. You’ll also receive little surprise gifts along the way to further enhance the experience.

Sounds great, right? But you’re thinking it’s probably expensive. Well, it is - in a way….. If you could recreate the same tour on your own (which you can’t) it would cost you substantially more than what Disney charges. Even if you took it down a notch or two you’d pay more. But this IS a first-rate experience all the way, and 5-star trips aren’t free. I can, however, work with you on payment plans, help you find lower-prices departure dates, and get you in on some great offers. For instance:

* FREE CRUISE: Book now for travel through 10/2/10 and get a FREE 3-night Disney cruise for the whole gang - Like two vacations for the price of one! (Some free departures are on the new Disney Dream!)

* Some 2010 departures are still priced at 2009 rates

* Book with ME by 12/28/09 and get spending money for your trip, up to $500! (Amount based on party size, itinerary, and departure date)

AbD vacations are aimed at families with a gross household income of $150,000 or more; however, I’ve booked families on AbD trips who make half that much. Where there’s a will, you know?! Drop me a note and we’ll get working on it. What an amazing Christmas present this would make - especially if you can toss in that you’re also getting a cruise!"

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I’ve just returned from five glorious days at Disney World for a travel agent conference, so over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing some of my observations, thoughts, and comments with you. Don’t hesitate to drop me a note if you have any questions.

Yacht Club vs. Beach Club

How I ended up with two nights at each is something I won’t go into, but I wanted to mention how very easy it was to change mid-stay. We simply packed up the last morning at the Yacht Club, called the baggage guys to come and get ‘em, and THEY took them over to the Beach Club for us. Our schedule prohibited us from checking into the Beach Club until late (around 9:30 that evening), but it wasn’t a problem. We just called for the luggage when we got to the room and it was there in about ten minutes. So to those who have contemplated splitting your stay between two resorts for one reason or another, I say go for it.

Now, I’ve stayed at the Yacht Club before, but I’d only seen the rooms at the Beach Club in the past. In my head, I’d really always thought of them as pretty much the same. Our Yacht Club room, though, was one with a king bed and NO day bed. It had a lovely view of the lake, though, and was in great shape. My ONLY negative comments related to the bedding: the pillows were seriously firm (and housekeeping couldn’t offer anything softer), and the sheets were very rough and stiff. Otherwise, though, the room, the staff, the dining, the location - all wonderful. Our Beach Club room also had a view of the lake, albeit a sideways one, but accessing the room nearly required a GPS. What a maze of hallways! Once there, we found we again had a king bed room, but this time with the sleeper sofa so the room was larger. It also had a wet bar in addition to the little frig. The two small closets instead of one large one forced us to store our luggage at the side of the room instead of hidden away, and the room clearly was in need of refurbishment (cracked sink, some peeling wallpaper, etc.). Happily, though, the pillows were softer and the sheets felt great.

Bottom line: These are both great resorts and the location is fantastic. Walking to the parks is really faster than taking the boats, but it’s nice to have an option. The themed pool that the two share is, hands down, the best pool of them all. Both resorts will kill you with kindness; the service is really over the top. I’d take the Yacht Club over the Beach Club in the future, but if the Yacht Club isn’t available, I wouldn’t’ hesitate to go with the Beach Club. They’re both solid choices, and since you can walk to two parks AND there are rooms that sleep five, they work well for families."

Delicious Holiday Designs on Display at Walt Disney World Resort

Pastry chefs throughout Walt Disney World Resort make things a little sweeter with deliciously decorative displays and sugar shacks made of yummy ingredients during the winter holidays. These candy-decked dwellings adorn the lobbies at various Walt Disney World resort hotels. On the menu this holiday season at Walt Disney World Resort:

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

New this year on the hotel’s fourth floor is a holiday tree inspired by the art of Disney Legend Mary Blair (whose work can be seen in the mural on the fourth-floor concourse wall). A team of 25 bakers created the 17-foot-high tree (6 feet wide) with gingerbread shingles.

Ingredient fun facts:

136 lbs. of honey
101 lbs. of flour
50 eggs

75 lbs. of icing
5 lbs. of spices
5 pounds of sugar syrup

Disney’s Beach Club Resort

This holiday season marks the 10th anniversary of the "Holiday Carousel," a fully detailed, life-sized carousel in the resort’s lobby that is created from a recipe that uses gingerbread, chocolate and sugar paste, and tons of enthusiasm, energy and talent. Guests who wish to take home a treat of their own can buy small gingerbread houses from the Beach Club Marketplace. Once a day, a guest is selected to have a photo with pastry chef Stefan Riemer and to receive a specially created gingerbread shingle.

Carousel fun fact: 10 "hidden Mickeys," one for each year, can be found on the carousel.

Ingredient fun facts:

36 lbs. of honey
96 lbs. of bread flour
100 pints of eggs
10 lbs. of spices
10 quarts of simple syrup

100 lbs. of icing
50 lbs. of dark chocolate
10 quarts of egg whites
100 lbs. of confectioner sugar

Disney’s Yacht Club Resort

The lobby of Disney’s Yacht Club Resort becomes home to a delectable scene in motion: A miniature New England-style train races through a sugary rock mountain surrounded by a candy-coated model village in this don’t-miss edible display. For children, daily demonstrations of decorating gingerbread houses and gingerbread men are part of the fun.

Disney’s BoardWalk

The lobby of Disney’s BoardWalk features a "Holiday Gazebo" made of gingerbread and chocolate, with "hidden Mickeys" for guests to find. Offered at BoardWalk Bakery are miniature gingerbread houses, stollen bread and a limited-edition pin featuring Stitch and the gingerbread display.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa

In the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a gingerbread house large enough that it doubles as a real bake shop. Featuring gingerbread using a classic Austrian recipe, the bake shop offers freshly baked items such as cookies and gingerbread ornaments. Other homemade items for sale include stollen bread, chocolate-peppermint bark, lollipops and special Grand Floridian logo boxes filled with truffles. Demonstrations of how to decorate a gingerbread house take place in front of the gingerbread house daily except Sundays.

Gingerbread house fun fact: Chefs spend 400 hours baking the gingerbread and 160 hours decorating the house.

Structure Composition:
16 feet high
17 feet wide
1,000 board feet of trim
60 sheets of plywood
40 window panes
80 square feet of retail space
100 square feet of display
10,000 pieces of gingerbread used

Gingerbread Ingredients:
1,050 lbs. honey
600 lbs. powdered sugar
35 lbs. spices
800 lbs. flour
140 pints egg whites
180 lbs. apricot glaze

American Adventure at Epcot
