Innovation + Imagination = New Magical Experiences For Guests Aboard the Disney Dream

Adding to its impressive list of cruise industry firsts, Disney Cruise Line will combine technology-infused innovations and imagination to create a whole new level of magical experiences for families sailing on its newest ship, the Disney Dream. Throughout their cruise vacation, guests will encounter unexpected magic - such as a restaurant that transports guests under the sea, artwork that magically comes to life and youth clubs filled with immersive gaming environments and personalized character encounters.

Disney Cruise Line partnered with Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative force responsible for designing Disney theme parks and resorts world-wide, to develop new forms of family entertainment for the Disney Dream. New experiences planned for the Disney Dream include:

Animator’s Palate
For the Disney Dream, Disney Cruise Line is re-imagining a fan favorite from the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder - Animator’s Palate restaurant. The restaurant design is that of a classic animation studio filled with character sketches, maquettes (three-dimensional character models), paint brushes, colored pencils and other tools of the animation trade. Scenes and characters from popular Disney/Pixar films adorn the walls.

Once the dinner service begins, however, the dining room begins a magical transformation as scores of wall-mounted LCD screens switch to scenes of a vivid undersea environment. It’s as if the restaurant was transported to the ocean floor and the LCD screens are windows, providing incredible views of a colorful coral reef and creatures that reside on the reef.

While dining, Crush, the surfer-dude sea turtle from Disney/Pixar’s "Finding Nemo," makes a special appearance, swimming around the restaurant and engaging in live impromptu interactions with guests. Crush will ask guests about the experience onboard the ship and in turn answer questions about life under the sea. While Crush is moving throughout the restaurant, other characters from "Finding Nemo," such as Nemo, Dory, Squirt and Bruce the shark, swim by and visit with guests.

The dining experience culminates with a surfing lesson led by Crush as the EAC (East Australian Current) swirls around the room. As Crush swims away, other characters from "Finding Nemo" make a final appearance before magically turning into pencil sketches.

Interactive Play-floor
For young cruisers, Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab will feature an interactive play-floor, a cruise industry first that blends the latest in gaming technology with Disney’s panache for storytelling. Located in the main gathering space in both venues, the interactive play-floor allows children to engage in team play exercises where their movements control the action on the interactive floor. For example, one activity has children scrambling around the perimeter of the interactive play-floor with their movements controlling the pitch of a virtual tilt maze.

On the interactive play-floor, children will be able to explore a wide variety of gaming options with varying levels of difficulty. Disney Cruise Line youth counselors will use the interactive play-floor during storytelling activities where children will be able to fly over the streets of London with Peter Pan or ride the ocean waves with Crush.

Living Characters
Also in Disney’s Oceaneer Club and Disney’s Oceaneer Lab youth areas, Disney characters come to life and interact with children in one-of-a-kind experiences. On a 103-inch screen, Crush, the animated sea turtle from the Disney•Pixar motion picture “Finding Nemo,” or the mischievous animated alien Stitch make scheduled appearances to chat, play and joke with kids in live, unrehearsed conversations.

Sometimes using silly props from their digital environments, Crush and Stitch amaze and entertain children during real-time, personalized appearances. These magical experiences with Crush and Stitch continue Disney’s legacy of bringing characters to life in new and incredible ways.

Enchanted Art
Throughout the Disney Dream, guests will encounter Enchanted Art that immerses guests in Disney storytelling in a completely new way. Appearing as traditional framed art, Enchanted Art magically comes alive when guests pause to admire the artwork. Enchanted Art will carry the appearance of popular art mediums - photography, oil paintings, paper sculpture, travel posters and animation cells. In reality though, they are framed LCD screens made to look like artwork through special effects and recognizes when a guest is present…which triggers the animated sequence. Guests may see new and different animations each time they come back and visit the Enchanted Art pieces.

In addition, the Enchanted Art is used as part of a one-of-a-kind detective themed adventure where guests of all ages join a ship-wide quest to find either stolen artwork or missing puppies. By using a simple card that serves as a high-tech detective device, guests can peer behind virtual canvases and discover clues that will lead them to solve the mystery and capture the villain responsible. A self-paced adventure, the game offers six potential villains and features randomized events so each time a guest plays they will encounter a different and unique gaming experience.

Virtual Porthole
The Disney Dream carries on the spirit of innovation with a cruise industry first for all inside staterooms. Virtual Portholes offer a “window” to the world with a real-time view outside the ship. High-definition cameras placed on the exterior of the ship feed live video to each Virtual Porthole. The live video feed corresponds to the stateroom location - with a view to port, starboard, forward or aft.

As guests are observing the outside views, they may glimpse a magical surprise: animated characters may pop by the Virtual Porthole. Characters may include Peach the starfish from the Disney/Pixar film "Finding Nemo," the flying balloon house from "UP" or even Mickey Mouse.

The Disney Dream is scheduled to depart on its maiden voyage Jan. 26, 2011, and will sail alternating three- and four-night cruises to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. During summer months, the ship will alternate four- and five-night itineraries with two stops at Castaway Cay. (Source: Press release, 03/30/10)

What’s Next at Walt Disney World

"Main Street Electrical Parade" (summer 2010) - With floats and characters appearing for the first time at Walt Disney World Resort, Disney’s "Main Street Electrical Parade" returns to Magic Kingdom with its joyous sights and sounds. Direct from Disneyland and marking its first engagement in Florida since 2001, the cherished parade will be led by Tinker Bell waving from the basket of a magical balloon aboard a new float. Pinocchio and Snow White also join the parade aboard bright new floats. Premieres in early June.

New Dining Experiences for Epcot (fall 2010) - Culinary expansions are under way at the Italy pavilion and Mexico pavilion. In Italy, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria plans to open in time for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Operated by Patina Restaurant Group, the same restaurateurs who run the pavilion’s Tutto Italia restaurant, the 300-seat pizzeria is inspired by Naples 45, another Patina Restaurant Group pizzeria in New York City. The casual pizzeria will feature wood-burning ovens - and use water from a source that most resembles the water in Naples, Italy, home of some of the world’s best pizza dough. The 14,000-square-foot space will include indoor and outdoor dining. At Mexico, the popular Cantina de San Angel restaurant is expanding, and will feature 400 seats with al fresco seating for lunch. The restaurant will feature south-of-the border creations from the culinary team at San Angel Inn LLC, who have run both the outside eatery and the pavilion’s San Angel Inn for more than 25 years.

Luxury Pet Resort (2010) - This one-of-a-kind facility will provide pet hospitality services that will include boarding, grooming and doggy day camp, and amenities such as luxury suites with television and raised bedding. Pet activities will feature nature walks and playgroups, and pampering services will range from ice cream treats to bedtime stories. The facility will be operated by Best Friends Pet Care.

Perfecting Paradise - A Magical Makeover for Castaway Cay (summer 2010) - Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island paradise in the tropical waters of the Bahamas, is getting an extra dose of pixie dust. Enhancements include an expanded family beach, a floating water platform featuring two twisting water slides, two fresh-water play areas for guests to cool off, a new teen retreat and 20 new private rental cabanas offering the ultimate in beachside luxury. The additional island amenities are scheduled to be complete by summer 2010, in time for special five-night cruises aboard the Disney Wonder with two stops at Castaway Cay, and the Disney Dream cruise ship which starts sailing in early 2011.

New Sailings for Disney Magic and Disney Wonder (2010-2011) - In 2010, the Disney Magic will sail to Europe for an unprecedented five-month season of Northern European and Mediterranean cruises. Book-ending the summer season of 12-night Northern European Capitals cruises, theDisney Magic will once again return to the Mediterranean for 10- and 11-night cruises, with three new ports of call. In addition to popular ports in Italy, France and Spain, theDisney Magic will visit Tunis, in Northern Africa, the island nation of Malta, and Corsica, an island oasis off the southern coast of France. In the summer of 2010, the Disney Wonder will sail four- and five-night cruises to Nassau, Key West and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. In the summer of 2011, the Disney Wonder will sail for the first time to Alaska, with seven-night cruises calling on Tracy Arm, Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan.

Star Tours Attraction (2011) - A new 3-D version of the tremendously popular Star Tours attraction will debut at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 2011. Based on the iconic Lucasfilm "Star Wars" films, the attraction will include immersive new elements that will take guests to many familiar places in the "Star Wars" galaxy.

Disney Cruise Line Expanding Its Fleet (2011, 2012) - The Walt Disney Company is expanding its successful cruise vacation business by adding two new ships, Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, to set sail in 2011 and 2012, respectively. Two decks taller than the existing Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, the new 1,250-passenger liners will more than double the passenger capacity for Disney Cruise Line. Now under construction, the Disney Dream will offer new innovations, magical children’s spaces, family entertainment and immersive experiences for which Disney Cruise Line is renowned. The Disney Dream will sail three-, four- and five-night itineraries to the Bahamas and Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.

Bowling Center at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex (2012) - A new 100-lane bowling center at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex is scheduled to open in 2012 and is anticipated to be one of the largest bowling facilities in the United States. The United States Bowling Congress will stage 13 events there, with tournaments beginning in 2013.

Magic Kingdom Fantasyland Expansion (2013) – The largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom will vastly increase the size of Fantasyland. Guests will be able to:

* Visit a Disney princess in her castle, cottage or chateau to share a dance with Cinderella at Dreams Come True with Cinderella; celebrate Sleeping Beauty’s 16th birthday with the Good Fairies during a Birthday Surprise for Sleeping Beauty; or join Belle in an enchanting storytelling performance during Enchanted Tales with Belle.
* Dine at Be Our Guest Restaurant, one of three enchanted rooms inside the Beast’s castle. Just outside the castle in Belle’s Village will be Gaston’s Tavern, another themed dining option.
* Fly with Dumbo high above brand new circus grounds, twice the size of the existing attraction. Dumbo’s Flying Circus will include a stylized tent where guests can enjoy midway games and other interactive family fun.
* Join Ariel on her newest adventure, Under the Sea: Journey of the Little Mermaid, a ride-through attraction with melodies from the animated feature.

Shopping, Dining and Lodging District (phased construction across 8-10 years) - Announced as part of a Walt Disney World expansion is a 450-acre mixed-use tourist commercial district just outside Disney’s western gateway (Western Way at Western Beltway). Early plans include 4,000-5,000 value-priced lodging units and a pedestrian-friendly dining/retail village.

Four Seasons to Anchor New Disney Luxury Resort (TBD) - Also announced as part of the Walt Disney World expansion for the next decade: a 900-acre luxury resort anchored by the prestigious Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. The development, along the northeast border of the property, will include a luxury hotel, 18-hole championship golf course, single- and multi-family vacation homes and fractional ownership vacation homes. IN THE MOOD FOR A CRUISE????

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"Don’t assume that online booking is your best bet. Not only do we offer ALL the pricing you’ll find on Vacation.com, but also special group pricing on even more departures. And, when you book with a agency that sells lots of cruises (like we do) you’re more likely to get free upgrades and more likely to get bigger upgrades than if you booked direct with the cruise line. Here are just a few of the great deals we have on the list right now…

Celebrity Solstice, October 17 from Ft Lauderdale
7-night Eastern Caribbean cruise from $610-940 p/p (+ taxes & government fees)
$100 onboard credit per cabin

Carnival Ecstasy, September 18 from Galveston
5 night Western Caribbean cruise from $250-290 p/p (+ taxes & government fees)
$75 onboard credit per cabin

Disney Magic, April 10 from Port Canaveral
14-night Transatlantic cruise to Barcelona from $699 p/p (+ taxes and government fees)
$25 onboard credit per cabin

Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas, April 3 and 10 from Ft. Lauderdale
7 night Eastern Caribbean cruise from $949 p/p (+ taxes/fees)
onboard agency gift (varies depending on cabin type)

7 night Western Caribbean cruises from $899 p/p (May 1, 15, 29)
onboard agency gift (varies depending on cabin type)"

Backstage Magic Fun Facts

Here are some interesting aspects of Walt Disney World Resort that guests will discover during the Backstage Magic tour offered by Disney Institute:

· Walt Disney World has the largest working wardrobe in the world with more than 2.5 million individual costume pieces and almost 8 miles of costume racks. Disney Creative Costuming has an inventory of more than 3,700 costume designs and uses more than 650,000 yards of fabric each year.

· Magic Kingdom is actually built on the “second floor.” The first floor is made up of approximately 9 acres of storage area and offices as well as a “utilidor” (utility corridor) for cast members. This Utilidor System is a tunnel more than a mile long.

· Many Audio-Animatronics figures, such as those featured in Hall of Presidents, wear human-hair wigs. Live performers wear synthetic hair wigs.

· Thirty-five Audio-Animatronics figures are featured in The American Adventure show, and the rear projection screen at the show is 28 feet high by 155 feet wide.

· Cinderella’s Golden Carousel was built in 1917 as the Liberty Carousel and ran for many decades in New Jersey before being acquired by the Walt Disney Company in 1967. The original horses are still used today.

· Central Shops is capable of building everything from trash cans to monorails. At 298,000 square feet, you could fit nine football fields inside the Central Shops building.

· The Hollywood Tower Hotel structure is 199 feet tall – making The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror one of the tallest attractions on site. Some 1,500 tons of steel and 145,800 cubic feet of concrete were used in the construction of the attraction.

· There are approximately 100 acres of browse plants grown for animals at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The Walt Disney World horticulture team plants more than 2 million annuals each year.

· Disney’s Animal Kingdom opened on Earth Day, April 22, 1998. At the center of the park is the Tree of Life, which is more than 140 feet tall and 170 feet wide at the base.

· Disney’s Wilderness Lodge was inspired by National Park Lodges, such as Old Faithful Inn (Yellowstone) and Ahwahnee Lodge (Yosemite). Massive pine logs for Disney’s Wilderness Lodge were harvested from standing dead wood at an elevation of 7,000 feet in Oregon and Montana. (Source: Press Release, 03/02/10)

Beth, our travel agent, writes about making special occasions even more special at Walt Disney World:

"In case you’ve been living in a cave for the last year or so, I want to make mention of the fact that Disney is REALLY making a big deal out of celebrations these days. You’ve probably seen the 'What Will You Celebrate?" commercials on TV and in magazines, but a lot of people don’t realize how far Disney will stretch the term 'celebration'" In fact, nearly everyone can think of something to celebrate that will qualify. Last weekend, our trip was officially celebrating the great report cards my daughter and her friend got. That counts!

When staying at a Disney-owned resort, you can do online check-in starting 10 days prior to arrival. You will be asked if you’re celebrating anything. Be sure to mention whatever it is - and then point it out every chance you get.

Wearing a special button makes that easy, and they’re available to everyone, not just Disney resort guests. While some of the hotel desks have them, the buttons are most easily available at the Guest Services window at the entrance to each park (or City Hall in the Magic Kingdom). Buttons include birthday, first visit, graduation, anniversary, family reunion, wedding, honeymoon, volunteer, honorary Disneyland citizen (D’land only), and a generic celebration. The buttons are free of charge, and cast members often go out of their way to do something nice when they see the buttons.

You can also go to www.disneyphotopass.com, upload a photo, and have t-shirts for your whole group made. Or try www.zazzle.com where you can pick your favorite character(s), add text (like, Jones Family Reunion) to a huge variety of shirts and sweatshirts. Perfect for a honeymoon couple, group, or even just a birthday boy/girl.

Surprise the guest of honor - or the whole gang - with a special cake or dessert by calling the cake hotline at 407-827-2253. Your order can be delivered to any Disney restaurant for a special after-meal surprise, or they can send it to your (Disney resort) room.

Speaking of rooms, how about decking it out with balloons, flowers, gifts and more? Visit www.disneyflorist.com to see all the amazing things they can provide.

Thinking of something bigger? More 'outside the box?'" Not a problem! If you can think it up, Disney can make it happen. For a price, of course, but if your group is large enough and you divide up the cost then sometimes it’s not as bad as you might think.

You can do those cool private dessert parties at Epcot during Illuminations for as little as $30 a person (minimum group size applies, park admission required). You can do private dinners in locations you didn’t even know exist, or book a VIP tour that gets your group front-of-the line at every attraction. About the only thing you can’t do is 'buy' your way into a night at the castle. Otherwise, think as big as you dare to, and then drop me a note and let me know what you have in mind. I’ll find out how to make it work and what it will cost." (Affordable Disney members should log in for Beth's contact info.)

Beth wrote Walt Disney World about the overcharge she received after dining at Epcot's German Biergarten. (See last week's issue #517.) Here is what they had to say:

"Rather than emailing, I took the time to write and mail a letter to Disney’s Guest Services department regarding the surprisingly high bill I got during a recent lunch at the Biergarten restaurant in Epcot’s Germany pavilion. I attached a copy of my email dining confirmation as well as a copy of the receipt. It’s been just over a week since I mailed it, so I was surprised to get a phone call so soon from a very pleasant woman who apologized profusely. She then addressed each concern separately.

As to being charged incorrectly for the child under ten, she confirmed that we were overcharged for her. To compensate, they are sending me a $25 Disney gift card to help with expenses on my next visit. (I mentioned in my letter that we go frequently; not sure what they’d do for a family that has no current plans to return.)

As to the pricing for the lunch on that date, I expected it to be $19.99 for adults, $10.99 for children, plus tax. Apparently, the price at the Biergarten changes frequently and for early February the pricing for lunch had increased by $2 for adults and $1 for children; however, we were (as I suspected) also charged an additional premium because it was Valentine’s Day.

Disney acknowledges that the exact pricing for the day you’re dining doesn’t appear on their website, nor is it on the confirmation that you get by email (when doing reservations online), so if you’re not using dining credits and want to confirm pricing for your specific dates, you can call Disney Dining at 1-407-WDW-DINE and they can tell you what the pricing will be - subject to change prior to arrival, though, so I’m not sure exactly how that protects you from unanticipated increases.

The cast member added that as a rule, if the date is a 'blackout' on the Tables in Wonderland program* you can count on a holiday premium being charged. (I looked it up after the call and the blackout list includes New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, Mother's Day, Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. No mention of Valentine’s Day, so it’s obviously not a pool-proof method of checking.) Note that she didn’t know for sure about the Valentine’s Day charges for this year and promised to check it out and get back to me. She called back less than 10 minutes later, so she was thorough in her follow-through.

Finally, as to the confusing nature of how the suggested gratuities are presented, she acknowledged that pre-figuring 18% and 20% for you (to aid the mathematically challenged) is fine for a regular restaurant, but admittedly higher than most people tip at a buffet location. Nevertheless, it’s presented as a guideline only and you’re permitted to write in anything you want to.

In the end, I have to say that I’m not only impressed with the fact that they followed up (so many companies wouldn’t), but that they did so with such speed, courtesy, and professionalism - and with a true indication that they really did want to make it 'right' for me."
