Barry writes:

"John,

I wanted to share a recent experience with you and your
readers. Also could use some advice on what I should do.
Below is a letter I emailed to Guest Communications back in
January after a terrible stay at the Contemporary. I "cc"
this email to Ryan Gerard, and Guest communications. I hope
they realize just how big your subscription audience is, and
how high of a regard disney-goers hold your advice!

To whom it may concern:

I am writing you today to tell you about a horrible
experience we had while staying at the Contemporary Resort
January 13th through January 16th. Our experience was not
only disappointing but an embarrassment to us and to the
Walt Disney Company. This poor experience would definitely
make me think twice before staying at a Walt Disney owned
and operated hotel and keep others from making the same
horrible mistake.

I have visited the Walt Disney World resort many times in
the past. My girlfriend and I recently became annual
passholders this past December since we visit so frequently.
We usually stay at the Swan and Dolphin Hotel since I am a
Starwood Preferred Guest Member, the Hilton downtown Disney,
or other downtown Disney hotels. It has been a long time
since I have stayed in an official Walt Disney World Hotel
and we were very excited about the opportunity to stay at
the famous Contemporary Hotel to say the least. We were
expecting the most memorable experience but had just the
opposite.

We arrived about 2 pm on Friday the 13th. We were put into a
"cattle like" processing area by the front desk resembling a
not so order like line for a ride. We finally reached the
desk after 25 minutes. The woman told us that our room was
not ready yet. We told her that was no problem we were going
to go to Epcot and come back later. The woman did take out a
map and show us were our room would be. To our dismay she
pointed out a room in long building off to the side. We were
very confused and immediately explained that no one had told
us this when we made the reservations. We were expecting to
be, and very excited have a room with a great view of the
resort right where the monorail came through. We had no
idea, nor were we told that there were rooms in another
building off to the side and that we were going to be put in
one. We asked her if there was anything she could do and in
the meantime we would go to Epcot expecting she would
remedy the situation.

We came back from Epcot at about 5:30, stopped by the front
desk, and were told that our room was ready, in the side
building (again very unexpected). The woman gave us a map
which she used to point out directions to our room. We
walked out the back door and past several maintenance golf
carts with garbage cans stacked on the backs and bags of
rather aromatic garbage on the back which I thought was a
very nice "touch" by your staff to make us feel "welcome."
We then proceeded down the walkway, in the blowing rain
(another nice touch), past the loud machine rooms (just
another nice touch) to a not so nice building with low
ceilings and exit signs hanging down which I hit my head on,
thanks!

Our room was recently remodeled which did lift our spirits
for a moment, until the strategically placed motion sensors
allowed the air conditioning to switch "on" at a dull roar.
We quickly called the front desk and told them about the
noise. A few minutes later an engineer showed up and quickly
said there was nothing he can do about the noise, the
air conditioning units are very old and that is the way they
sound in all the rooms, and then left (big disappointment).

We then called down to have our bags brought up to the room.
When they arrived, the bags were soaked through from the
rain. Our clothes and everything in side them soaked as
well. We called the front desk to tell them and their
response was, "oh you are staying in one of the "garden
wings" and they have to walk out side to get there so they
get wet, there's nothing we can do about that" (big
disappointment..again).

We dried off a few of our clothes as best we could with
hairdryers. I called housekeeping and asked them to send up
two bathrobes. The woman immediately responded that the
bathrobes are reserved for people staying in the main
building. I told her about the clothes getting wet and she
didn't seem to care and said again, "sir we cannot bring you
robes." I called the front desk and asked them to work on
the situation. Housekeeping called back and said they would
try to find us two robes.

Why were we being made to feel like even more like second
class citizens?

Finally two cheap, cardboard like, robes were brought to us.
Dingy and wrinkled as if they were found in some old closet
somewhere.

That night we slept with the air conditioning off because of
how loud it was.

Then next morning we woke up early and ordered a quick room
service so my girlfriend could attend a convention. I went
back to sleep and was again awakened at 8:15 by the sound of
banging and sawing from the construction going on in our
building. I went into the hallway and realized they were
still working on the wing we were staying in. I called the
front desk and told them I wanted to switch rooms and was
told that there were no other rooms for me.

From Saturday until Sunday in was very cold out. Although we
didn't want to because of all the noise it made, we had no
choice but to turn on the heat in the room. I spent Saturday
night going back and forth from the bed to the thermostat to
turn the heat on so we could get warm, and then turning it
back off so I could get little periods of sleep until it got
too cold again.

Sunday morning we figured we would at least have a good hot
breakfast before we went to MGM studios. We went over to
Chef Mickey's and found that they were too crowded to
accommodate us. Imagine that? We couldn't even have a nice
breakfast in the hotel which we were staying.

If I had known that our experience at the Contemporary was
going to be just so awful, I would have stayed at the Swan
Hotel. The poor level of customer service at the
Contemporary was inexcusable. It seemed to us that Disney's
real philosophy is "pack them in like cattle, treat them
like cattle, and get them out quick, ignore complaints,
feelings, and disregard any wish for a memorable
experience." For some lessons in customer service, and to be
shown first hand how a "guest" should be treated, you and
your "cast members" should stay a weekend over at the Swan
and Dolphin. At the Swan and Dolphin, their accommodations,
the hotel, the grounds, and the superior level of customer
service far exceeds that of the Contemporary one hundred
times over. "Exceed the guests expectations and provide a
memorable experience," I think that's their philosophy.

This was a horrible experience in its entirety. You did a
really great job of making us feel like second class
citizens, kind of like the passengers in Steerage on Titanic
(good example for you). Disney should be ashamed of
themselves for what happened to us and the way in which we
were treated. We live in Fort Lauderdale, only three short
hours away, part of your "home audience." I have always
wondered why Disney has not offered better deals and
specials for this "home audience" to take advantage of, so
the home audience would come more frequently, and now I know
why, because you are embarrassed and afraid we might find out
just how horribly you will treat us. Well... we found out!

Thanks for the Memory."

To be fair, Disney does offer some decent discounts to
Florida residents during the year, but their customer
service can sometimes be found lacking. Donna and I have had
some problems over the years, but overall the good
definitely outweighs the bad. Still, Disney could have been
more sensitive to Barry's complaints.

Barry, I have other addresses that you can write to. See:

Let me know if you get a response.

Wendy writes:

"Hi John,

I've been a Canadian member of your website for about 5
years and have been dealing with Beth all of that time. She
has become someone I correspond with regularly and we
religiously book every trip with her (as well as recommend
her to every friend and co-worker we know are looking to go
to Disney). We're from the Ottawa area in Canada and it's
darn cold here so many people make a trip south each winter.
Beth is absolutely the best travel agent around and a
wonderful person who definitely goes out of her way for her
clients - she makes everyone feel like a friend. We've had
the good fortune to meet up with Beth on one of our trips a
couple of years ago and I've been corresponding ever since.

I sent her this trip report about our Jan/Feb 2006 trip and
she felt it might be of interest to you. We spent two nights
with family, 3 nights in Sarasota specifically in St.
Armand's Circle and 5 nights in Disney at Port Orleans -
Riverside...

Hi Beth,

We had a fantastic trip both in Sarasota and in Disney
World. I thought I'd do up a little summary much like you do
for John's website.

After an uneventful flight, we picked up our vehicles at the
airport. We were able to get a Buick Rendezvous which was an
extremely large SUV and Liz and Dave had a Cadillac STS with
a huge sunroof and leather seating. To say we were impressed
with the deal you got us is an extreme understatement!

We stayed a couple of nights with Rob's Mom and Dad in
Palmetto and they showed us around their neck of the woods.
It was nice seeing their new place. We left on Friday for
St. Armand's Circle and the Holiday Inn on Lido Beach. We
went to the Sarasota Jungle Gardens at the suggestion of
Rob's Mom - it was okay but there wasn't a whole lot to see.

We checked into our hotel and it was great - I was really
impressed with it as a Holiday Inn. The room was about as
big as the ones at Riverside and the Gulf view was well
worth the extra $20/night. We just had to cross Ben Franklin
Drive each day and we were on Lido Beach. The kids and I had
a great time collecting shells and Marina found some sand
dollars so she was pretty excited.

We took Jean's suggestion and went to Mote Aquarium and ate
at the Salty Dog afterwards. Dave and Liz and the kids met
us there and everyone had a great time. We also ate at
Hemingway's and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so nice to be
in walking distance of St. Armand's Circle - we walked
around each evening and went to Kilwin's for ice cream
(delicious!). We had a great time and left for Disney on
Monday feeling well rested.

When we arrived on Disney property Monday we went to check
in right away and lucky for us, they had the rooms we had
requested and they were ready for us. We were extremely
impressed with all the renovations that had been completed
since last December. They already had the new beds when we
visited in December 2004 but they had recently changed all
the carpets, tile, curtains, bath curtain, chair covers etc.
The lighting was new and resembled an Arts and Crafts style.
There were little curtains above the headboard for interest
and they now use the curtain divider that French Quarter has
always had - it was really great for getting ready for bed
when Madison was already asleep.

We had lunch at the food court using the dining plan which
provided so much food all week and for such an unbelievable
price that we will definitely use it again. We drove to
Animal Kingdom Lodge to check it out (only Rob had been
there before) prior to returning the rental cars. Animal
Kingdom Lodge was beautiful - I would stay there for part of
a vacation for sure. Maybe half Animal Kingdom Lodge, half
Wilderness Lodge.

We returned the cars to Dolphin without any problems and
went to wait for the boat for MGM. We had a great time at
MGM and stayed late, taking advantage of the extra magic
hours. Most of our party checked out the new Motor show and
were really impressed by it. We had a reservation at Prime
Time Cafe for an early supper. It was our first time there
and we loved it! We had Aunt Liz as our server but she
became cousin Liz since Marina and Madison's real Aunt Liz
was with us. She was so much fun - she put my brother-in-
law Dave in the corner for being bad and unruly and the kids
laughed and laughed. We got home around 10:30 that night
(Rob and Maddie left early) so we put in a full day.

Tuesday we relaxed for a bit in the morning and actually did
a bit of laundry and enjoyed some Mickey waffles prior to
heading out for Epcot. Three of us went on Mission Space as
soon as we arrived while Liz and Rob went to get fast passes
for everyone for Soarin.' Soarin' was absolutely amazing!
Everyone loved it - unfortunately Madison was about an inch
too short and couldn't ride but there's always next year.

We toured Future World and part of the World Showcase before
our 4pm reservations at Le Cellier (another first for us).
We were served by Jennifer from Langley, B.C. She was loads
of fun and we had lots to talk about once she found out we
were from Canada. She was telling us how much she misses Tim
Horton's (a Canadian coffee house that has locations
everywhere in Canada).

Rob had the filet and I had the herb crusted prime rib. We
had the two salad choices for appetizers plus we ordered the
cheese soup and the barley soup for the girls as they also
got an appetizer from the adult's menu. Rob and I shared the
dessert trio which included the raspberry sorbet, the
chocolate whiskey cake and the maple crème brulee. This meal
was one of the best, if not the best I have ever had even
off Disney property.

I told Jennifer that the prime rib exceeded those I had
enjoyed at the Keg (a Canadian steak house that is known for
it's great steaks). The other great thing was that our meal
came to $160 and made us realize how fantastic the meal plan
is. Liz and Dave's bill was well over $200. We will
definitely make plans to eat here again - it's our new
favorite. We left Epcot in the early evening and everyone
but Madison and I went to Downtown Disney to try Disney
Quest and to shop.

Wednesday we headed to Animal Kingdom and immediately
attempted to ride Expedition Everest. Unfortunately for us
they were filming on that attraction during the day and no
one was allowed anywhere near it. We later heard that if we
had stayed for the extra magic hours that night that it was
open and we could've experienced it - oh well, next year!

We had a great day at Animal Kingdom. The kids had their
faces painted which is a tradition for us at Animal Kingdom
just before riding Kilimanjaro's Safari. We had lunch at
Flame Tree BBQ (a first for us as we normally eat at Tusker
House) and it was quite good. The outdoor seating area was
nice.

We left for the Grand Floridian and Cinderella's dinner for
a little after 5. We had a great time there as always. I
brought Madison's Cinderella dress and crown so she was
excited to dress up. The lucky thing for us was that Belle
was the guest that night and the girls were able to get her
autograph and picture for the first time. Our server was
Michael and we had him last December - he enjoyed knowing
that we remembered him. We went back to the resort after
supper and some went to the Bar to enjoy the antics of the
piano player Bob Jackson.

Thursday we went to Blizzard Beach for early opening at 9am.
It was a warm day but the water was not quite as warm as we
would've hoped, nonetheless we enjoyed the slides and the
lazy river. We had lunch there before we left for the hotel
to change.

We went to Magic Kingdom for the afternoon and we were able
to do all the rides in Adventureland prior to eating at
Crystal Palace. We enjoyed the buffet and the characters of
course (we go there every year). After supper we went to
Tomorrowland and were lucky enough that Buzz Lightyear's
Space Ranger Spin opened up from refurbishment a week early
so we could ride it. We also went on Stitch before we went
to enjoy the SpectroMagic parade. We went to the hotel after
the parade and enjoyed an early night.

Friday was a bit of a disappointment as far as the weather
goes but we all had ponchos so we went with the flow
(literally!). It poured on and off all day. We headed out
for Magic Kingdom for the day. We have never seen Magic
Kingdom so dead. We were able to go on all the rides, shows
etc. in one day which we have never done.

We had lunch at a new place (Columbia Harbour House which
was near the Haunted Mansion) and we really enjoyed our meal
there. We had one little glitch when we went to ride Goofy's
Barnstormer - it was closed because there had been some
lightning and thunder but it opened up just before we left
and Madison was finally able to ride it. We also saw Jasmine
in the Character Tent which excited the girls since they
didn't have her autograph.

After a very soggy day and sock purchases for everyone, we
headed to Chef Mickey's for our last Disney Meal. The meal
was great and the entertainment was fun. We decided that our
server must usually work at the California Grill as he
looked like he was out of his element with all the kids and
characters running around. He was nice but extremely
reserved which is very unusual for Chef Mickey's.

Chef Mickey's is usually our favorite buffet but believe it
or not for both food and experience, it ranked 3rd with
everyone on this trip. Grand Floridian was 1st by far but
Crystal Palace had some new dishes that we hadn't tried
before (lemon/cinnamon basmati rice) and some great
vegetable dishes that were not on the other buffets. We will
still go to Chef Mickey's but I'm not sure we'd keep it as
our last hoorah since it was a bit of a let down this time.

We rode the monorail to Polynesian to have a look around
after supper. What a gorgeous hotel and beautiful pool area!
It would be lovely to stay there. We rode the monorail all
the way to Epcot and the kids and Liz were able to ride up
front with the driver in the TTC/Epcot leg which was a nice
end to the trip. We took the bus back to our hotel and began
the long job of packing up. That evening we purchased
souvenirs at the hotel store and used up our remaining snack
coupons for crispy snacks and cookies (Rob and I had 13
left!).

The next morning we brought our luggage to the lobby and
checked out right at the hotel. This was fantastic - I hope
they continue to offer this. After breakfast in the food
court, we boarded the Magical Express bus for the airport.
We were the first stop (we went to French Quarter, Key West
and Sarasota Springs prior to leaving Disney) and it was a
comfortable bus ride. They played a small movie explaining
Disney's express transportation service that lasted almost
until we arrived at the airport so it made the ride seem
smaller.

We had a good plane ride home and even better, we didn't
have to dig the car out as Syracuse didn't get any snow
while we were gone.

We had a great time and as always, we really appreciated all
your help. Talk to you soon."

Karen writes:

"John,

Hi. I am a member of the basic affordable disney. I have a
friend who wants to sell me her left over days on her
ticket. She said that even though my finger prints will
obviously not match hers that Disney will just have me sign
the ticket and I will be able to use it. Have you heard
anything about this? She supposedly heard this from someone
who works at Disney. I would hate to waste the money but on
the other hand if it is true then I could save some money.
Thanks for any info."

Disney's rule is that their tickets are non-transferable and
they enforce it vigorously.

Karen adds:

"I have a child ticket that we were unable to use when our
vacation was canceled last year. My son has since turned 10
and would require an adult ticket. Would I be able to
upgrade at the gates to an adult so that I will not lose the
money that I paid for this ticket?"

Yes, you can upgrade the ticket.

Beth, our travel agent, was on hand for the premiere of
Expedition Everest. We published the following report on our
blog April 7. Here it is again if you missed it:

"There sure were a lot of puffy eyes at Boma this morning
during breakfast! That's because the big press/industry
event to celebrate the grand opening of Expedition Everest
was held last night at Animal Kingdom. But I'm getting ahead
of myself. Let me start with check-in.

My 8-year-old daughter and I arrived (after having lunch at
Trail's End in Ft. Wilderness) around 2:00 yesterday
(Thursday). Check-in at the front desk was uneventful and
nothing out of the ordinary. We headed to our room and found
that we had a great location on the fourth floor overlooking
the central savannah. We quickly unpacked and headed
upstairs to the event hospitality suite. This was set up in
the Vice Presidential suite on the 5th floor. Wow! Now
THAT's a hotel room! Anyway, after signing in, I was given
two complimentary 4-day hoppers with 4 water park +
admissions. (The tickets expire in a few days and I
apparently can't pay to make them not expire.) I also
received a welcome gift bag.

There was a big tray of assorted huge cookies and a nice
beverage selection, so we each grabbed a cookie and a soda
and headed back to the room to check out the contents of the
gift bag. It was an Expedition Everest lunch bag covered on
one side with white fur and the EE logo. Pretty cool. Inside
we found two beverages from the Coke-Cola Co that we didn't
even know existed. There was a t-shirt, a VERY nice watch,
several light-up key chains and such, a special EE edition
box of Nestle Snowcaps candy, a pack of Sharpie markers, and
a compass/clock/clip from the Discovery Channel.

After cramming everything back in the bag, we changed into
swimsuits for a quick jaunt to the hotel pool. Refreshing,
as always! Then we ran back to the room to change, and I
took my daughter to Simba's Clubhouse. (This is AKL's
childcare facility.) I had to help her select what she
wanted for dinner from a menu, sign her in, and sign for a
beeper. The staff was very friendly, and my daughter ran off
with them without looking back.

Then off to the bus for me. They had special buses outside
for us that carried us over to a backstage entrance at
Animal Kingdom. The park was closed by then, so it was a
little odd to be the only ones in sight as we headed into
the industry cocktail party at the Tusker House. The main
room had three tables of food - including one with a
mountain of shrimp (yum!) - and some high tables... the kind
you stand at while you eat. The second room had a bar (open
bar service all evening with beer, wine, and mixed drinks)
and many tables with chairs. Each table had two types of
center pieces. One was an ice sculpture with the EE logo
etched into the center of it, and the other was a sculpture
of a mountain with white carnations used to simulate the
snow-capped peaks.

Around 7:00 we were escorted around the park to the Asia
section where we had to pass through a thick cloud of (dry-
ice) "smoke" and were subsequently greeted with street
performers and a lineup of people draping colorful scarves
around our necks. Crossing into the event area there were
two directions to go, but both offered table after table of
buffet items and countless bars serving exotic drinks like
mocha martinis and mango cosmopolitans. (Plenty of beer,
wine, soda, coffee, etc., too.) There were several bands
playing, street performers all over the place, and of course
- Expedition Everest which was available to ride all evening
with no lines to wait in! (And no, I haven't yet worked up
the nerve to ride. Apparently I didn't try enough of the
cocktails.)

We all got very cool lanyards with a 'pass' for the evening.
One side was sort of an 'admit one' ticket, while the other
side was a map of where the food, entertainment stages, open
attractions, and evening finale were located. Nice touch.
Another fun touch were the bags of white cotton candy 'snow
balls used as decoration. My daughter wasn't happy that she
couldn't attend the event with me, but one of those 'snow
balls' earned me her forgiveness pretty quickly. The theme
of the evening was 'fire and ice.' The ice carvings,
wandering people in parkas, and snow balls (plus a looming
Everest) achieved the snow part, while the finale on the
lagoon - a dramatic achievement in fireworks and flames -
accomplished the fire part nicely. Other more subtle
reminders of both - like lanterns on all the dining tables -
furthered the theme.

OK, on to the main event. After breakfast this morning we
were taken by buses to the main entrance of Animal Kingdom
and led by guide through separate bag-check lines, and then
around the park and into the roped off area. (Expedition
Everest doesn't open to the general public until 2PM today.)
We were given small bottles of cold water, a Disney Wildlife
Conservation Fund button, and a battery-operated
flashlight/fan (on carabiner clip) as we entered. Not sure
how I managed this, but I ended up right in front of the
stage with a clear view of the podium.

Jay Rasulo, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, was
master of ceremonies. He started by announcing that last
night five $100,000 checks were presented by the Disney
Wildlife Conservation fund to some very special people:
actors John Cleese and Isabella Rossellini, Jane Goodall,
and two others including a Nobel Peace Prize winner and
another person (sorry - had a hard time taking notes!), all
of whom are very active in conservation efforts. Each of
these people was on hand (except Jane who was here last
night, but had a representative today). We were also
introduced to the sons of the first people to climb Mt.
Everest and a man from the Discovery Channel who talked
about the many shows that will be airing in conjunction with
the opening of EE. I forget how many new species of
creatures were discovered during the research for this
attraction, but it was a bunch. Can't wait to see these
shows.

Anyway, we then moved over to the front of the attraction
where Disney's president and CEO, Bob Iger, did a brief
introduction, and then Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teeter
officially cut the ribbon - at which point amidst a great
deal of 'smoke' the first train came flying down the side of
the mountain with the cast of Disney's hit made-for-TV movie
High School Musical aboard. Afterwards, guides were
available to take people on tours of the park. I, of course,
ran back to the bus and to the hotel to file this report!

So it's officially open! I'm happy to say that my daughter
enjoyed her time this morning with the sitter I hired from
Kid's Nite Out, and we're now officially done with our grand
opening events. I'm going to head up to the suite to grab a
few sodas for our frig, and then we'll head out to a park.
It's a gorgeous day, so I'm thinking maybe Typhoon Lagoon
for a bit....

Well, that's all for now. Disney sure knows how to throw a
party!"

Beth sent us this final note:

"We didn't set the alarm Friday night, but still managed to
wake up fairly early and make good use of the morning hours.
We headed out of our room about 8:15 and had just a short
wait before the Epcot bus came. We quickly cleared the 'bag
check' line. Here's a hint: Before the turnstyles open, the
lines start to really grow, but if you pass through the bag
check and head to the right, just excusing yourself through
those lines, we found the ones furthest to the right to be
substantially shorter, so when they DID open we got through
pretty fast and could head straight up to the right of
Spaceship Earth and over to the rope line at Innoventions
West. It's important to be there because, after doing the
countdown and dropping the rope, you're as close as you can
get to The Land pavilion [where Soarin' is located].

We did our best speed walking up the incline along with the
rest of the herd. I seriously felt as if I was getting a
first-hand taste of the Disney marathon! Down the stairs,
across the pavilion, and to the Fast Pass machines we went,
grabbing two of the first ones issued for the day (return
time of 9:45-10:45). Then we ran around and got in line and
had only a 15 minute wait before we got to ride. After
exiting, we went across to the Living with the Land boats -
which can have a really long wait time later in the day -
and quickly found ourselves aboard the cruise through
hydroponic gardens and such to see what they're growing
these days. They're doing some amazing things with pumpkins
and tomatoes!

Then we had a yummy breakfast from the The Land's Sunshine
Seasons dining area. A large pastry and large muffin and
two drinks were under $7 with tax, so it's a bargain. Then
back to Soarin' to ride for a second time using our Fast
Passes. We then met up with some friends from Naples to
ride Spaceship Earth, and then back to the hotel to put on
bathing suites.

We arrived at Typhoon Lagoon in time for lunch, and even
found two chairs! This was our first time there so I didn't
know what to expect really. I learned that forgetting your
towels is a costly mistake ($1 per towel to rent them), that
no one bugs your stuff when you're not around (I left my
park tickets and room keys with charge abilities in my pants
pocket, but I wouldn't recommend that), and that grilled
cheese pretzels are a great thing for lunch.

I also learned that while TL is the better of the two water
parks (in my opinion) for young children or those that don't
swim well, there still isn't that much to do. My daughter
was too big for the tike areas, and two timid for the heavy-
duty slides. Even a sturdy 8-year-old can EASILY be knocked
over by the powerful wave action in the wave pool. (We sat
on a bench along the edge and still got smacked backwards
pretty hard.) Castaway Creek, the slow-moving river of
inner tubes that meanders around the park, is really
tranquil and suitable even for most younger children and
non-swimmers given the shallow water (about 3'), and during
times when everything thing else has long wait times, it
seems very easy to grab a few empty tubes floating fast.
The park is really pretty, and a nice way to relax. Don't
forget the sunscreen!

We headed back about 4:00, changed clothes, and caught a bus
to MGM and then transferred to a boat to the Yacht & Beach
clubs to eat at one of my favorite spots, Beaches & Cream.
Two thumbs up on the Caesar salad with shrimp. The side of
onion rings was plenty to share. My daughter had a grilled
chicken sandwich with fresh fruit, and then we each chose a
dessert. My 'No Way Jose' was a peanut butter and fudge
delight, while Emily's Mud Slide produced huge smiles from a
very tired child. Warning, though... we had enough food for
four, and didn't come anywhere close to finishing. What's
more, we were using dining vouchers provided by Disney as
part of the invitation to this special weekend, but without
them the meal would have run us about $54 with tax and
gratuity. That's for a chicken sandwich and a salad, two
sides, two drinks, and two sundaes. Yet another place where
the dining plan comes in handy - especially if it's free!

Then we rode the bus over to Downtown Disney for some quick
shopping before heading back to the hotel. We both slept
like rocks, and I barely noticed the noisy thunderstorm that
started around 3:30 in the morning. I'd had every intention
of stopping in a park for a few hours before heading home,
but frankly, my feet were pretty tired and that three-and-a-
half hours of driving ahead of me would have put a real
damper on things, so we just did a quick stop in the
giftshop and headed out. Final hint: when in a giftshop ask
if there's anything on sale. We picked up a really nice
tote bag that had been $30 for just $10, and we got a
gorgeous beach towel that had been $20 for half off.

That's all for now. I have a bunch of emails to catch up
with, so I'll be perched at the computer for the next few
days (trying not to let the pixie dust wear off too
quickly). A great trip from start to finish. Can't wait
until they invite me to another special event!!! :-)"

Coming to you live from Animal Kingdom Lodge!

Beth, our travel agent is on hand for the premiere of Expediton Everest:

"There sure were a lot of puffy eyes at Boma this morning during breakfast! That's because the big press/industry event to celebrate the grand opening of Expedition Everest was held last night at Animal Kingdom. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let me start with check-in.

My 8-year-old daughter and I arrived (after having lunch at Trail's End in Ft. Wilderness) around 2:00 yesterday (Thursday). Check-in at the front desk was uneventful and nothing out of the ordinary. We headed to our room and found that we had a great location on the fourth floor overlooking the central savannah. We quickly unpacked and headed upstairs to the event hospitality suite. This was set up in the Vice Presidential suite on the 5th floor. Wow! Now THAT's a hotel room! Anyway, after signing in, I was given two complimentary 4-day hoppers with 4 water park + admissions. (The tickets expire in a few days and I apparently can't pay to make them not expire.) I also received a welcome gift bag.

There was a big tray of assorted huge cookies and a nice beverage selection, so we each grabbed a cookie and a soda and headed back to the room to check out the contents of the gift bag. It was an Expedition Everest lunch bag covered on one side with white fur and the EE logo. Pretty cool. Inside we found two beverages from the Coke-Cola Co that we didn't even know existed. There was a t-shirt, a VERY nice watch, several light-up key chains and such, a special EE edition box of Nestle Snowcaps candy, a pack of Sharpie markers, and a compass/clock/clip from the Discovery Channel.

After cramming everything back in the bag, we changed into swimsuits for a quick jaunt to the hotel pool. Refreshing, as always! Then we ran back to the room to change, and I took my daughter to Simba's Clubhouse. (This is AKL's childcare facility.) I had to help her select what she wanted for dinner from a menu, sign her in, and sign for a beeper. The staff was very friendly, and my daughter ran off with them without looking back.

Then off to the bus for me. They had special buses outside for us that carried us over to a backstage entrance at Animal Kingdom. The park was closed by then, so it was a little odd to be the only ones in sight as we headed into the industry cocktail party at the Tusker House. The main room had three tables of food - including one with a mountain of shrimp (yum!) - and some high tables... the kind you stand at while you eat. The second room had a bar (open bar service all evening with beer, wine, and mixed drinks) and many tables with chairs. Each table had two types of center pieces. One was an ice sculpture with the EE logo etched into the center of it, and the other was a sculpture of a mountain with white carnations used to simulate the snow-capped peaks.

Around 7:00 we were escorted around the park to the Asia section where we had to pass through a thick cloud of (dry-ice) "smoke" and were subsequently greeted with street performers and a lineup of people draping colorful scarves around our necks. Crossing into the event area there were two directions to go, but both offered table after table of buffet items and countless bars serving exotic drinks like mocha martinis and mango cosmopolitans. (Plenty of beer, wine, soda, coffee, etc., too.) There were several bands playing, street performers all over the place, and of course - Expedition Everest which was available to ride all evening with no lines to wait in! (And no, I haven't yet worked up the nerve to ride. Apparently I didn't try enough of the cocktails.)

We all got very cool lanyards with a "pass" for the evening. One side was sort of an "admit one" ticket, while the other side was a map of where the food, entertainment stages, open attractions, and evening finale were located. Nice touch. Another fun touch were the bags of white cotton candy "snow balls" used as decoration. My daughter wasn't happy that she couldn't attend the event with me, but one of those "snow balls" earned me her forgiveness pretty quickly. The theme of the evening was "fire and ice." The ice carvings, wandering people in parkas, and snow balls (plus a looming Everest) achieved the snow part, while the finale on the lagoon - a dramatic achievement in fireworks and flames - accomplished the fire part nicely. Other more subtle reminders of both - like lanterns on all the dining tables - furthered the theme.

OK, on to the main event. After breakfast this morning we were taken by buses to the main entrance of Animal Kingdom and led by guide through separate bag-check lines, and then around the park and into the roped off area. (Expedition Everest doesn't open to the general public until 2PM today.) We were given small bottles of cold water, a Disney Wildlife Conservation Fund button, and a battery-operated flashlight/fan (on carabiner clip) as we entered. Not sure how I managed this, but I ended up right in front of the stage with a clear view of the podium.

Jay Rasulo, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, was master of ceremonies. He started by announcing that last night five $100,000 checks were presented by the Disney Wildlife Conservation fund to some very special people: actors John Cleese and Isabella Rossellini, Jane Goodall, and two others including a Nobel Peace Prize winner and another person (sorry - had a hard time taking notes!), all of whom are very active in conservation efforts. Each of these people was on hand (except Jane who was here last night, but had a representative today). We were also introduced to the sons of the first people to climb Mt. Everest and a man from the Discovery Channel who talked about the many shows that will be airing in conjunction with the opening of EE. I forget how many new species of creatures were discovered during the research for this attraction, but it was a bunch. Can't wait to see these shows.

Anyway, we then moved over to the front of the attraction where Disney's president and CEO, Bob Iger, did a brief introduction, and then Olympic gold medalist Hannah Teeter officially cut the ribbon - at which point amidst a great deal of "smoke" the first train came flying down the side of the mountain with the cast of Disney's hit made-for-TV movie High School Musical aboard. Afterwards, guides were available to take people on tours of the park. I, of course, ran back to the bus and to the hotel to file this report!

So it's officially open! I'm happy to say that my daughter enjoyed her time this morning with the sitter I hired from Kid's Nite Out, and we're now officially done with our grand opening events. I'm going to head up to the suite to grab a few sodas for our frig, and then we'll head out to a park. It's a gorgeous day, so I'm thinking maybe Typhoon Lagoon for a bit....

Well, that's all for now. Disney sure knows how to throw a party!"

Kim writes:

"I have read some of the comments appearing on your page
lately and felt that I too needed to speak up. We just went
to Disney at the beginning of December. We noticed many of
the same types of changes. We have been to Disney world 5
times and have noticed a definite difference in customer
service, lines, and cleanliness.

The first time we went, the famed Disney customer service
was in full force. It was what made it a joy to stay there.
Last year and then this year we saw major differences. Last
year we stayed at Port Orleans and had numerous complaints
with the food facility, lack of service and lack of
cleanliness.

This time we stayed at the Grand Floridian, figuring that we
would experience the ultimate in Disney service.
Unfortunately we did not. The lobby areas were always
overflowing and extremely loud due to the over abundance of
kids waiting for the character meals. It was obvious that
these had been overbooked and the kids waiting just ran
rampant through the hotel. The bathrooms in the lobby area
were dirty every time we went in. One time, a child had
become ill and had vomited through the lobby and into the
bathroom. When I went to report this to the closest employee
I could find, I was met with an attitude and told that they
were very busy and would try to get to it!

My 67 year old mother went down a slide at the Honey I Shunk
The Kids Playground and severely injured her knee. The
Disney employee standing at the bottom of the slide never
offered to help her up or to get her a wheelchair. I had to
get her up and have her hop on one foot while holding on to
me until we reached a seat.

Once back at the Grand Floridian we asked for a wheelchair
to get her back to the room. They said that they were all
out but would give us the next available. They sent us to
our room in the golf cart. We waited and waited and no
wheelchair ever arrived. We found out that there are NO
wheelchairs at any resorts! They must be rented! We had been
told incorrect information. When trying to work it out with
the concierge, we got nothing but a run around!

There is so much more that could be told, but suffice it to
say that 1 whole day of our Disney adventure was wasted
trying to get a wheelchair! Dinner reservations were
cancelled and time in the parks was missed. The biggest
thing was that along the way nobody even pretended to care
or to help. They kept telling us "THE HOTEL IS OVERBOOKED
RIGHT NOW AND WE CAN"T HANDLE ALL OF THE GUESTS ISSUES!" We
went at was supposed to be a slow time.

We decided we will give Disney one more try in the future.
But it is 3 strikes and you are out! It is a shame for a
company who actually taught customer service to other
companies to have seen such dramatic negative changes in
such a short time."

I wrote Kim:

According to our information, all Disney resorts have
complimentary wheelchairs (with a deposit), but they are all
gone very early. They should have recommended a rental. And
they certainly should have helped your mother when she hurt
herself. That's just common courtesy.

Kim responded:

"We too thought that all resorts had them. However we were
told by the concierge desk as well as the Hotel Manager that
that was not the case. You must rent from an outside company
and the desk will try to help you coordinate it.

In our case, my mother could not put any weight at all on
the leg and it swelled incredibly. We spent the whole
afternoon and night without anyway of getting her around.
They had promised a chair to our room then by 8 am the next
morning. at 930 am when still no chair arrived, we suggested
for the 3rd time to the manager that he send an employee one
stop away to the MK and get one of the 1000's of chairs they
have there! Finally they did and we got a wheel chair at
10:45 - we still had not had breakfast - they kept telling
us "any minute, we'll have a chair."

It was really pretty bad. The main thing was how little
anyone cared along the way and the excuse was that the hotel
was busy!"

I ran this question past Beth, our travel agent, and she
writes:

"I have not been told anything about the wheelchairs, but
I'll ask around. My understanding was always that they are
like the rollaway beds... SOME resorts have them and some
don't, but you can't reserve them in advance and they do go
fast, so if you are sure you need it it's better to arrange
with an outside source. When I go next week I'll ask at AKL
to see what their response is."

Beth has a source for wheelchairs and scooters and she'd be
glad to arrange delivery for you at WDW.
=================================================
Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I recently saw a note in an Affordable Disney newsletter
from a reader who commented that Pop Century resort didn't
share buses with other resorts, while a friend of hers that
stayed at "another moderate resort" said their bus DID pick
up elsewhere. I feel that this needs a little clarification.

First, Pop Century isn't a moderate resort; it's in the
"value resort" category - and don't let the $116 per night
price tag mentioned scare you off... The value resorts start
off as low as $79 a night at certain times of the year. It's
true that while Pop Century buses usually don't service any
other resort, the buses servicing the All Star resorts often
stop at two or even all three in that group. Usually,
though, that's only outside park opening and closing times
when each resort is less likely to have need of a full bus.

I should also mention that Port Orleans Riverside and Port
Orleans French Quarter, while treated as separate resorts in
some ways, are treated as one big resort in others. In
addition to being able to use the pools at both sides,
guests will often find that park buses stop first at French
Quarter and then make the 4-stop loop at Riverside. (This is
but one of the reasons that I prefer French Quarter
personally.) If you ARE staying at Riverside, though,
consider heading to the stop in front of the main building -
or even walking over to French Quarter - during peak morning
hours to increase your chances of getting a seat."

Note from John:

I've never really been bothered by the buses stopping at
French Quarter on our way to Riverside. Patience comes with
age, I guess. :) However, like Beth recommends, we always
catch the bus at the South depot near the gift shop at the
main building.
