LET US PRAY...

(As many of you know, I am an author of Catholic prayer books. One of the best ways to know Jesus more intimately and show our love for Him is through prayer. Prayer keeps us focused on the spiritual life and opens a channel for grace so He can make His presence known to us.)

Today's thought:

We often wonder why God, who loves us so much, would permit us to suffer. We experience ill health, the death of a loved one, loss of a job, etc. Yet, Our Lord said that we must pick op our cross and follow Him. For there is no crown without the cross, no victory without the crucifixion, no pain, no gain. For it is in the fire of suffering that we are purified - as gold is purified in the furnace.

God sometimes has to use a two by four to get our attention. Pain leads to introspection and a realization that life is very short and that we can not make this pilgrimage without Christ's help. As we pray in the Lord's prayer, "Thy will be done on earth as it is heaven," we must surrender ourselves to His divine will and trust that He will be with us always to share the burden. Something easier said then done. Throwing ourselves on the cross with Christ can be very scary. Let us pray this prayer to help us as we struggle to do the Father's will:

Father, I abandon myself into your hands;
do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you:
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me,
and in all Your creatures -
I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,
for I love you Lord,
and so need to give myself,
to surrender myself into your hands,
without reserve,
and with boundless confidence,

For you are my Father.

NEW COLUMN: Let Us Pray...

As many of you know, I am a Catholic and a writer of Catholic prayer books. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page for titles.) One of the best ways to know Jesus more intimately and show our love for Him is through prayer. Prayer keeps us focused on the spiritual life and opens a channel for grace so He can make His presence known to us. The question then becomes, "how do I develop a prayer life?"

I would like to share with you how I approach the Lord through my prayers. There are no hard and fast rules, so feel free to adapt my ideas and use them as you see fit. I'm not going to be preaching - I'll leave that to the experts - but I will be including in my blogs and newsletters brief comments about how to pray, as well as any spiritual thoughts that have brought me closer to Christ.

For those who are interested, just look for the section titled "Let us pray." All others can ignore that column, but I will pray that you will one day take an interest! :)

LET US PRAY...

(As a Catholic writer, I know one of the best ways to get to know Jesus more intimately and show our love for Him is through prayer. Prayer keeps us focused on the spiritual life and opens a channel for grace so He can make His presence known to us. This column includes brief comments to help you develop a good prayer life and spiritual thoughts to bring you closer to Christ.)

"When can I pray?"

Start with spending 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes in the evening.

"What do I say?"

Begin with the prayer our Lord taught us:

"Our Father, Who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy Will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen."

Then proceed to the "Hail Mary." The first part is drawn from Scripture; the second part was added by the Church:

"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of death. Amen."

End with a short prayer of praise to the Holy Trinity:

"Glory Be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen."

Then read a chapter of the Bible. Start with the New Testament. It's easier to understand in the beginning.
