Today's newsletter marks our 400th issue! It's been a labor of love and we hope that you all have enjoyed it as much as I have enjoyed writing it. May the Disney magic sustain you and us in the coming years as we aim for the 800th issue!

Trip Report November, 2007

As you know from last week's issue, Donna and I were on vacation at Walt Disney World Thanksgiving week. See last week's issue for comments about our first three days on property.

WEDNESDAY

Today we spent the day shopping. Donna purchased some drastically reduced Disney merchandise at the outlets we mention in our book. For example, Donna found a WDW jacket with embroidered front and back for $17. I had to pay $54 at Downtown Disney for a comparable jacket in my size!

While we were shopping, we came across a harp player who was wonderful. We had to purchase his Christmas CD. You can learn more about him at his website:
http://www.mekomusic.com/

We returned to our room in the afternoon for a break. We then visited Pop Century and Port Orleans Riverside to check out the food court prices. Modest price increases are to be expected, but the quality of the food is no longer what it was. The same can be said for the food at the fast food eateries in the parks. On the other hand, food at the Pepper Mill food court at Coronado Springs, although more expensive than your average value or moderate resort food court, offers an above average menu and ample portions.

Speaking of Pepper Mill, we ate dinner there and then headed to Downtown Disney. I purchased the jacket mentioned above and we stopped by Ghirardelli to buy candy souvenirs for our children and sundaes again for us! We returned to our room about 11 PM and slept like babies. BTW, on the bus trip back to our room, we noticed that workers were erecting Christmas trees in the resort lobbies just in time for Thanksgiving!

THURSDAY

Donna and I went to the Magic Kingdom for breakfast. Couldn't resist having a bagel and cookie at the Main Street Bakery! We were disappointed to learn that the Christmas parade with Santa and the reindeer would not be running until December 1. The Christmas tree near the train station was not going to be erected until December 1 as well!

So we headed for Epcot, our favorite park. We sure missed visiting Spaceship Earth which was closed for rehab. However, Talk with Crush was a lot of fun. Amazing how that turtle interacts with the audience. Narley, dude!

Because it was Thanksgiving, we had to have a turkey leg! Delicious.

We loved the new Canada film. They re-recorded the show's title song and it is beautiful. After seeing this new film, Donna and I are thinking about taking a train trip through Canada.

Visiting the shops in England is always a treat and the Impressions de France film is as beautiful as ever.

To spare our sore feet, we took the launch at International Gateway and switched to the Coronado bus at MGM. A Mears charter bus had to fill in for the regular Disney bus. What a comfortable and pleasurable ride! It was about 8 PM when we got back to our room and we decided to get a good night's sleep in preparation for our last day to be spent at Epcot again.

FRIDAY

We spent our last day at Epcot. We parked our car at Boardwalk so we could take the launch to Epcot's International Gateway entrance and avoid walking all the way from Future World to the rest of the pavilions we wanted to explore.

The architecture, ceramic tiles, and beautiful clothes at Morocco are all worth considering. Not to mention the photo of me in a fez!

Donna always likes to take a photo of the lagoon from the entrance level to Japan's Yakitori House. A beautiful vista.

We love the show at the American Adventure and Christmas carols sung by the Voice of Liberty singers in the rotunda.

An acrobat managed to climb on a stack of chairs without falling and a storyteller entertained the crowd in Italy.

They were singing Christmas carols in the Biergarten in Germany. You know you need another stein!

China's new film was much improved over the former version.

A group of happy travelers was having fun posing in Viking horn helmets in Norway.

Donna made me put on one of those large sombreros again for a photo in Mexico! The Gran Fiesta Tour starring Donald Duck was a big hit with the kids.

After taking the launch back to Boardwalk and driving to our resort, we had some delicious pizza and chocolate cake at the Pepper Mill.

SATURDAY

We returned home the same way we came: in one of Amtrak's sleeper cars. It was a very pleasant and quiet trip. We slept soundly all night. The train arrived ahead of schedule and we got home in time to attend Sunday mass.

Donna took many photos which she'll place in her new 2007 photo album. This book of memories will take its rightful place alongside all the other Disney photo albums we've created over the years to remind us of the magical moments that await us on our next Walt Disney World vacation!

Beth, our travel agent, writes: "Travel agents are bombarded daily with faxes about new promotional offers from hotels, cruise lines, tour companies, and everyone else. Recognizing that it's hard to keep up with them all, a site was created to do just that: sift through them, organize them into a searchable database, and delete the ones no longer in effect. The site has been a HUGE help! And now they've added a new benefit which allows us to share that promotional database with our clients.

When you're ready to start planning a trip, Affordable Disney members should log in to access the Catalog on the Addendum. Use the simple search function to narrow down your choices. If you see something that interests you, just click on the contact email address and let me know what you're looking at. I'll email you back with the details and we can go from there! Although the site is fairly comprehensive, not every company is listed so I do have separate files of promotional emails that I can search through if you don't see anything you like. Hope you take a few minutes to check out this new benefit of being an Affordable Disney member!"

The Mouse Makes House Calls: Vacationers that Purchase a 2008 Walt Disney World Vacation to Receive a Call From Mickey Mouse on Christmas Day

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2007) -- Walt Disney Parks and Resorts today announced that families in the U.S. and Canada that book between now and Dec. 23 will get a telephone call from Mickey Mouse personally announcing the good news on Christmas Day.

Parents can plan their trips start-to-finish online and choose to have Mickey Mouse call their house and give a magical surprise to their kids on Dec. 25. They can also select the greeting that Mickey gives their families -- either "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." Starting on Cyber Monday, Disney launches the special "Mickey Call" holiday promotion Web site directing families to book their Disney vacation packages online, by calling Walt Disney World Resort at 407/939-7734 or through a travel agent.

"Many families purchase Walt Disney World vacations as Christmas gifts for their kids," said Walt Disney World President Meg Crofton. "The call from Mickey is a creative, personalized way to bring magic into homes on Christmas morning and to get kids excited about their incredible gift."

The "Mickey Call" holiday promotion is back by popular demand after its success last holiday season, when Mickey Mouse called thousands of homes on Christmas Day, making the holiday extra special for those families. This year the holiday gift promotion is expected to be even more popular, largely appealing to the savvy group of "online moms" who want gift-giving without the hassle and in just a few clicks.

"Research shows that the majority of moms (62%)* will do at least some of their holiday shopping online this year," Crofton said. "This is a chance to connect with parents online and help them add some special magic to the holidays. This holiday, parents get Disney vacation packages at an affordable price, and kids get a Christmas surprise from Mickey."

This Disney holiday offer will be available to families who book a non-discounted 2008 Walt Disney World vacation online at www.disneyworld.com/holidaycall or by calling Walt Disney World Resort at 407/939-7734 or through a travel agent. (Source: Press Release)

INSIDER TIP: Beth, our travel agent, can book this vacation for our members. Of course, she will also apply any discounts to your vacation if and when they become available. So it's possible to get the call from Mickey and still get the discount! See our book for the most affordable times to visit WDW. To help you plan for a potential deal, I've created a chart on the Addendum at our members site that summarizes the deals Disney released during the past year.

ALL ABOARD! THE POLAR EXPRESS EXPERIENCE ROLLS INTO SEAWORLD

Believe in the magic of the season aboard this one-of-a-kind journey to the North Pole

Orlando, Fl (Nov. 9, 2007) - This holiday season, jump aboard The Polar Express Experience at SeaWorld for a magical trip to the North Pole. Debuting Nov. 23 and continuing through Jan. 1, 2008, SeaWorld’s Wild Arctic transforms to a thrilling, never-before-experienced expedition to the fabled Santa Town.

The Polar Express Experience is based on the film from Warner Bros. Pictures and Shangri-La Entertainment, inspired by the beloved Caldecott Medal children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. "SeaWorld Orlando, Warner Bros. and Iwerks have created a one-of-a-kind motion simulation experience that combines one of the holiday’s most beloved movies with an actual winter wonderland," said Michael Fletcher, Vice President of Entertainment for SeaWorld. "The result will completely immerse guests into a thrilling combination of fantasy and reality."

This heartwarming adventure begins with a three-minute preshow telling the story of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve, just before midnight. Straining to listen for the elusive sound of ringing bells aboard Santa’s sleigh, the boy is jolted out of bed from the thunderous roar of The Polar Express arriving to take him on a fascinating adventure to the North Pole. Guests then embark upon that same adventure as they board The Polar Express Experience. Recreating classic scenes from the movie in a multi-sensory experience, The Polar Express Experience immerses guests with lighting, scent, sound, and motion to transport them to the North Pole - and into the spirit of the season.

When guests arrive at their destination, they step off the train and into the movie itself. Temperatures drop and holiday spirits soar as the travelers arrive at the frozen North Pole, complete with towering Christmas tree, gift-laden sleigh, village décor and Santa himself. The journey continues as guests also encounter other inhabitants of the North Pole - the animals themselves - including graceful beluga whales, powerful polar bears and giant walruses.

In addition to this stellar holiday attraction, SeaWorld also offers an array of festive shows and seasonal additions. Guests can join Shamu for the holidays during "Shamu Christmas...Miracles." This captivating show helps guests celebrate the holiday season as a time filled with hope and peace and just possibly, miracles. The 22-minute production comes to life daily through Dec. 25 at Shamu Stadium.

Guests may also witness a winter wonder as snow flurries descend from up above, and jewels of water and light adorn the night during the "Christmastide" holiday fountain show -- a seasonal spectacular where water seemingly dances to the beat of Christmas music through Dec. 25.

"Mistify," a nighttime finale Dec. 26 - 30, takes place on SeaWorld’s center lake and features larger-than-life marine creatures on 60-foot mist screens, 100-foot fountains, flames on water and dazzling fireworks.

Families will enjoy strolling through the Waterfront’s array of gift shops and restaurants all while listening to the joyful tunes of singers, musical quartets and the "Sizzlin’ Pianos" show that ignite the spirit of the season. Through Christmas, stores and restaurants will remain open until 7 p.m. during weekdays and 8 p.m. on weekends. The park will remain open until 10 p.m. Dec. 26 - 30.

Additional Festivities
The winter season warms up South Seas-style at "Makahiki Christmas Luau." This festive celebration includes succulent island cuisine served with the ancient holiday traditions of the Pacific Islands. The sounds of Christmas are reinterpreted with authentic Polynesian rhythms, music and dancers Nov. 23, 2007 through Jan. 1, 2008 (except Dec. 25). Park admission is not required.

Breakfast with Elmo and Friends, Dec. 26-31, offers a delicious buffet served up with the hottest characters in town including Elmo, Big Bird, Grover, Zoe, Ernie and Cookie Monster. Prices are $16.95 plus tax for adults and $14.95 for children (ages 3-9). Children under 3 are free. Reservations are required and breakfast times are 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Park admission is required.

New Year’s Eve at SeaWorld
SeaWorld rings in the holiday Dec. 31 with a musical celebration that includes the best in pop, Latin and swing music and dancing. The party begins with Michael Andrew and his 18-piece Atomic Big Band who will keep the crowd dancing. At the stroke of midnight, the night will shine even brighter with vibrant fireworks. (For those who rather end the year with a splash, the park’s attractions and thrill rides will remain open until midnight.)

For more information, guests may visit online www.seaworld.com or call (800) 327-2424. (Source: Press Release)

Hi Everyone!

NOTE: If you want to visit Walt Disney World when there is no deal for the general public, you will need to follow the discount strategies that are revealed in our online book, "Secrets To An Affordable Walt Disney World® Vacation," to make your vacation affordable.

Donna and I are enjoying our vacation at Walt Disney World. The weather is nice: 75 high; 60 low. We took Amtrak's Auto train and for the first time booked the sleeper car. The room is very small, but private and quiet. It was nice to have our own shower and toilet, although I can't imagine trying to take a shower in such a small space! We had own server who caters to all of your needs. He served us dinner - surf and turf and wine - and continental breakfast in our room. Dinner was better than we've experienced in the past traveling coach.

This is our first vacation in 27 years without our children and we miss them. They call us every day on the cell phone to make sure we're alright and to see what we're doing.

SUNDAY

Upon arrival, we checked in immediately at Coronado Springs, which is a beautiful resort. Got a room on the first floor and not far from the eatery and bus stop. (Yes, you have to ask!) We had a quick, but quite substantial, lunch at Coronado's Pepper Market. After mass at the nearby beautiful Mary Queen of the Universe Shrine, we wasted no time ordering a Ghirardelli sundae. Having eaten a big lunch earlier at Coronado, and indulged in the sundae, we skipped dinner and finished the evening strolling through the stores at Downtown Disney.

MONDAY

We had a quick breakfast at the nearby McDonald's and headed for the Magic Kingdom. Disney has not completed its Christmas decorating yet, but what is there is beautiful. Love the garland!

Crowds were pretty good size, so some lines had waits of up to 50 minutes. We don't like to wait more than 30 minutes for any attraction, se we return to the busiest ones later in the day.

Disney is not running its Christmas parade yet during the day, but the afternoon "Dream" parade and "Spectro Magic" at night are still very satisfying.

Pirates of the Caribbean is a lot more fun since Disney added Jack Sparrow, but the Monsters, Inc show was just lame.

The castle is beautiful with its blanket of lights and the nighttime "Wishes" fireworks display was the best we have ever seen at the Magic Kingdom.

We had the Disney photographer take our photo in front of the castle and we purchased it during an evening lull at the Camera Center in Exposition Hall. We picked out a beautiful oval frame, and had Disney cut the photo to fit. We thought if they made a mistake they would reprint us another photo. Well, the logo on the photo was half hidden by the frame and Disney reprinted us another photo without the logo and cut that for us - all at no extra charge! Now that's service.

We grabbed a hot dog and soda for lunch. While everyone was outside waiting for the afternoon parade to start, we grabbed a table in the Main Street Bakery and enjoyed a decadent ice cream cookie sandwich. We finished the cookie just as the parade started. Perfect timing.

After having explored the rides and attractions all day, we found an empty bench outside the package delivery store near the train station and we stayed there to watch the 8 PM Spectro Magic parade - our favorite parade. While waiting we had some popcorn to hold us over until dinner. After the parade we strolled through the stores and positioned ourselves on Main street to see the fireworks show. We left after the show and, although a river of visitors flowed down Main street on our way to the bus depot, we were able to get the first bus back to Coronado! BTW, Coronado's bus stop is the first stop upon exiting the Magic Kingdom!

We enjoyed a delicious meal at the Pepper Mill which is open until 11 PM. Donna's taco salad was fresh and tasty; my broasted chicken, french fries and sauteed zucchini was very satisfying. They have the best fries I've ever eaten at WDW!

After answering some email on my laptop - cable works well in the room; costs $10 per day to use - we called it a night.

TUESDAY

We had breakfast at the Pepper Mill and spent half the day in the Animal Kingdom and the other half in MGM. Animal Kingdom was packed. Looks like Expedition Everest roller coaster ride is really increasing business for Disney. It was hot, too! Finding Nemo-The Musical is more for kids than adults, but it was done well. There was standing room only when we arrived. We decided to watch the show standing since we would have had to stand 45 minutes in line for the next show anyway! The Osborne Christmas Light show at MGM is always a holiday treat. The behind-the-scenes look at the making of Narnia is magical.

We grabbed a pizza at Pepper Mill on the way back to our room. Tomorrow is a day off from the parks. We'll go shopping and give our tired feet a much needed break!

WEDNESDAY

I have to post this newsletter before I leave the hotel so I'll finish our trip report in next week's issue - our 400th issue!

DISNEY SYSTEM GOING DOWN FOR MAINTENANCE

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"The Disney Travel Company computer system will be shut down tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 10 PM for a system upgrade. The upgrade is expected to be completed by 9:00 Saturday morning. They are almost never on time with those, so don't count on it! You cannot make reservations, modify reservations, or cancel reservations for PACKAGES during that time. Although I haven't had it confirmed yet, my assumption is that they will apply the same old rule they usually have when the system goes down unexpectedly, and that is that payments due while the system is down can be made without penalty on the day it comes back up. Reservations with money due will not cancel during that time (or they shouldn't - but make the payment if you can, just in case).

Room-only reservations will continue to be accepted and existing room-only reservations can be manipulated during this time, as can dining reservations and activity reservations. The exception is Friday from 12:30-4:00 PM when that system will be down as well.

In other words, to play it safe, don't leave anything hanging. If you have a package payment due between Thursday and Monday it would be best to get it made today or tomorrow rather than wait. Only wait if you're not yet committed to the trip and making a payment would tie you into it by way of a cancellation penalty. In that case, make sure that you make the payment on Saturday (or when the system is back up) and do not under any circumstances miss a payment that's due when the system is functional. They will only waive rules if you missed a payment because of the system being down."

DISNEYLAND PARIS

Top Couturiers including Vivienne Westwood and Azzedine Alaïa Design for the Disney Princesses

European fashion houses re-design classic character’s outfits to be auctioned offat CHRISTIE’S to benefit UNICEF

To continue its 15th birthday celebrations, Disneyland Resort Paris is teaming up with some of Europe’s leading names in fashion to design one-of-a-kind creations inspired by Disney Princesses.

British fashion icons Dame Vivienne Westwood, Luella Bartley, Scott Henshall, Paul Costello, Antoni & Alison and Michael Hertz for Aquascutum will be joining designers from France, Spain and the Netherlands to create original, high-fashion party dresses for classic Disney Princesses such as Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Tinkerbell and Minnie Mouse.

The designers have penned initial sketches for their chosen characters and are now working hard to make their final one-off fantasy creations. These will be showcased at Disneyland Resort Paris in November. The designs will be auctioned off at CHRISTIE’S in Paris during an exclusive VIP event in November. Proceeds from this auction will provide much-needed funds for UNICEF.

Scott Henshall, who was inspired by the Wicked Queen from Snow White commented, "Walt Disney is a hugely iconic figure that I’ve been bought up with so I felt honoured to be asked to be part of this project. Since I’ve been known to have a bit of a wicked side I thought it only fitting to design for the evil queen from Snow White."

Vivienne Westwood, when asked what had inspired her to design for the classic Disney Princess, Snow White, said, "Because there's a Snow White in every girl."

Other international fashion designers taking part are Azzedine Alaïa and Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, from Spain, and Nathalie Garçon, Impasse de la Défense, Baccarat and Chantal Thomass, from France, just to mention a few.

Jeff Archambault, head of Community Relations for Disneyland Resort Paris said of the project: "This exciting project illustrates the historic partnership that has brought Disney and UNICEF together over time in supporting children’s causes. By donating their time, talent and savoir-faire to create original fashion pieces, the designers are demonstrating that when beauty and generosity go hand in hand, the results are nothing short of magical." Hi Everyone!

NOTE: If you want to visit Walt Disney World when there is no deal for the general public, you will need to follow the discount strategies that are revealed in our online book, "Secrets To An Affordable Walt Disney World® Vacation," to make your vacation affordable.

Beth, our travel agent, writes about last minute bookings for this year's holidays: "Readers should start talking NOW about going NEXT Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years or Winter Break! Planning next year's trip while everyone is together this year is the perfect time, and there's a good chance that we can get them decent space at this point. Unless they're OK with staying off-site, it's a bit too late now to start working on it for this year. There is next to nothing left for the last week of the year."

Thousands of Twinkly Crystal Lights Create Icy Cascade

A dazzling new lighting spectacle is transforming the iconic Cinderella Castle at Walt Disney World Resort into a glimmering, shimmering ice palace at holiday time.

Bathed in more than 200,000 tiny white lights, the castle glows and glistens as "Cinderella's Holiday Wish" delights Magic Kingdom guests nightly, starting Nov. 12.

"We are thrilled to be adding this brilliant new castle spectacle to the holiday festivities at Walt Disney World this season and for seasons to come," said Francois Leroux, vice president of Walt Disney World Entertainment. "This glistening holiday enchantment creates perfect fairytale magic for this festive time of year."

"For a park aglow in holiday magic, this becomes the new and eye-filling superstar," added Disney Entertainment show producer Rob Hamberg who supervised the weeks-long rigging of the turrets and towers for the light show. "Nothing will rival 'Cinderella's Holiday Wish' for sheer visual spectacle."

And what a spectacle.

As if suddenly dusted in a million ice crystals, Cinderella Castle shines like the galaxies, adding to the wintertime wonderment of the holidays at Florida's Vacation Kingdom.

Fun Facts

To transform Cinderella's fairytale castle into a magical ice palace it took...
# Five weeks and 65 elves
# Two cranes
# 15 miles of cables, cut and dyed castle colors, supporting...
# 32,000 square feet of fishing nets, supporting...
# 200,000 energy-efficient LEDs, interspersed with...
# 500 strobes
# One Fairy Godmother working some very special magic...

"Show Before the Glow" Stars Disney Characters

To mirthful holiday music, Mickey, Minnie and the gang appear onstage, admiring the festive lights illuminating Main Street, U.S.A. But what to do about the darkened, unadorned castle?

As they bandy about ideas, the Fairy Godmother suddenly appears. It is Cinderella who should rightfully decide, she insists.

Enter the princess herself, with her Prince Charming. All agree with Cinderella that her castle should sparkle the way her beloved glass slippers do -- like shimmering ice and snow.

With a wave of Fairy Godmother's wand -- and guests joining in to make the wish come true -- Cinderella Castle magically morphs into a glorious wintry confection, twinkling in the sky. "The castle suddenly shines like a glistening blanket of ice," explained Disney show writer/director Alan Bruun. "Guests won't believe their eyes at the spectacle as Cinderella's holiday wish comes true."

Show times will be nightly at 5:45 p.m. Cinderella Castle aglow will also play a supporting role in other Magic Kingdom entertainment such as live stage shows, the nighttime fireworks extravaganza "Holiday Wishes," and the after-hours Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, a specially-ticketed event featuring the new "Mickey's Once Upon a Christmastime Parade."

Like a global necklace, dazzling castle lighting spectacles also adorn Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Resort. Disneyland Paris, now marking its 15th anniversary, started the castle lighting tradition in 2005 when Leroux conceived the concept. (Source: Press

‘The Fairest One Of All’ Celebrates 70 Enchanting Years

Newly Recovered Priceless Art From ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’Joins Amazing Three-Dimensional ‘Toy Story’ Zoetrope at the Disneyland Resort

ANAHEIM, Calif. (November 7, 2007) - Unique celebrations of two motion picture icons will be on view beginning Saturday, Nov. 17, exclusively at the Disney Animation attraction in Disney’s California Adventure park at the Disneyland Resort.

The Walt Disney Animation Research Library has spent more than seven months creating "The Fairest One of All," a stunning and rare collection of more than 120 pieces of concept art, story sketches, animation drawings, backgrounds and cels created during the development and production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney recently acquired many of the pieces from a private collection including several that have never been publicly displayed. The exhibition, which provides an unprecedented behind-the-scenes look into the creation of this motion picture classic, will take over the Courtyard Gallery entrance hall of the Disney Animation pavilion at Disney’s California Adventure. Meanwhile, in an adjoining gallery, visitors can explore the principles of animation itself as they marvel at the new Toy Story Zoetrope, an amazing three-dimensional 21st century variation on the Victorian novelty device which presented early "moving pictures."

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, celebrating the 70th Anniversary of its original 1937 release, was Walt Disney’s first feature-length animated film and earned him a special Academy Award: one full-size Oscar and seven little ones. Toy Story, produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1995, was the first feature-length computer-animated film and won an Academy Special Achievement Award for its director, John Lasseter, now Chief Creative Officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Separated by nearly 60 years of animation history, Snow White and Toy Story are the only two animated motion pictures on the most recent American Film Institute list of the top 100 films of all time, and they represent a continuing legacy of animation excellence at The Walt Disney Company.

"The Fairest One of All" exhibition includes a never-before-seen collection of priceless art used in the creation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs created by such Disney animation "legends" as Joe Grant, Eric Larson, Art Babbitt and Milt Kahl. Among the rare items presented in the exhibition are visualizations of such early concepts as a panther companion for the story’s Evil Queen, redheaded and blonde versions of Snow White, various story gags not used in the film, and depictions of the Queen based on actresses Joan Crawford and Katharine Hepburn.

The Toy Story Zoetrope is unique in its own way. Originally created for the "20 Years of Pixar Production Art Show" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Zoetrope creates the illusion of movement by presenting a rapidly changing sequence of images - actual three-dimensional models - of characters from both Toy Story films: Woody, Buzz Lightyear, cowgirl Jessie, horse Bullseye and even the little green Aliens. The figures are mounted on a spinning disk and lit with a strobe which creates a sense of continuous motion, as if the characters have actually come to life before your eyes.

Both "The Fairest One of All" exhibition and the Toy Story Zoetrope can be found, beginning Nov. 17, in the Disney Animation pavilion, located in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot area of Disney’s California Adventure park. Admission to Disney Animation is free with general admission to Disney’s California Adventure. (Source: Press Release)

Beth, our travel agent, gives us a teen's reaction to his experiences on a Disney cruise

"I just returned from a Disney trip that was booked at the last minute... one of the perks of not needing to buy airfare to get to the port! This was my third Disney cruise experience, but I was extra-excited about this one because I was doing it with a teenager for the first time. At a month shy of being 14 years old, Justin (not his real name) has several non-Disney cruises under his belt so he speaks as a kid with something to compare to. Here is a bit of his feedback...

* The ship and the food are OK.

I take that to mean that there is room for improvement in both areas, but neither one is bad enough to be a negative.

* The entertainment is awful.

Surprised? If you've taken a Disney cruise you shouldn't be. There aren't too many teenaged boys (or probably even girls, for that matter) that would truly enjoy sitting through an hour of G-rated animated movies brought to life. After Justin's harsh review of Hercules, the Muse-ical we didn't even bother trying to get him to see the other shows. Deemed equally lame are all the character appearances throughout the ship and at Castaway Cay. Justin declared the ship's entertainment to be geared solely towards young children, and my (adult) companion and I had to concede that he was 100% correct about that... at least with respect to the entertainment that he was old enough to observe. (He, obviously, didn't get a chance to experience the adult-only areas in the evening.)

* The teen hangout (Aloft, on this ship) is pretty cool.

The area is in the ship's bogus forward funnel on deck 11. Organized activities don't kick in until mid-morning or later in most cases, no doubt in recognition of the fact that they run into the wee hours of the morning so the teens aren't likely to be awake until nearly lunch time. There are all sorts of things to do up there, and if all else fails they can always watch a movie with their new-found friends. Justin quickly met a few guys to hang out with and seemed to be happy spending most of the day and evening in Aloft.

* A few squishies did get in.

If you don't know what a squishy is then you're probably a wrinkly. Squishies are kids that are too young to officially be there, but they manage to get in anyway. Justin said no one even checked. If you're the parent of a squishy, though, don't count on that happening when you go because Disney is usually pretty good about enforcing the age thing. (Now that you know what a squishy is, I probably don't have to explain what a wrinkly is... and it goes without saying that if you ARE a wrinkly then don't even think about being seen checking up on your teen unless you enjoy causing your offspring public humiliation and endless teasing.)

* Activities, in general, leave something to be desired.

Disney ships don't have the high-energy activities onboard that you find on many other ships. No rock climbing walls, skating, surfing, golfing, etc. There is ping pong available, as well as shuffleboard and a small basketball area. An attempt at playing soccer resulted in setting a ball adrift in the sea due to the lack of adequate enclosure of the area. There is an arcade, but it's apparently something that we wrinklies are more likely to enjoy than the teens are. (I was pleased to see Ms Pacman and Galaga, if that tells you anything.) There are computer games in the teen area, but Justin says that some of the best ones actually have a newer version available in the Oceaneer's Lab (area for younger kids). In fact, the younger kids overall seem to have a better selection of "worthy" teen software... something that caused some irritation amongst the teens because the younger kids didn't even know what to do with the "good stuff."

* At least 13-year-olds count as "real" teens.

All parents understand that being a 'tween is rough... Too old to hang with the little kids, not old enough to be accepted by the high school crowd. Cruise lines don't deal well with that problem. They think they do, but they're missing the boat. (No pun intended.) Disney and Princess start their teen programs at age 13... something your 12-year-old will probably be very unhappy about. Royal Caribbean and Carnival offer young teen programs for ages 12-14. Your 14-year-old will be unhappy about that. The fact is, they all need to do some serious focus group work. By the time a youth hits the ripe old age of 12 they have that Jekyll-and-Hyde thing going on where they can carry on a conversation with the maturity of a full-blown adult one minute and then walk across the living room carpet with muddy sneakers the next.

Ideally, a youth program allows enough flexibility for your 'tween to roll with their mood of the moment. That means allowing them into the teen center if that's where they want to be and offering more guided activities for when they're feeling the need for that structure. On the next cruise ship I get to design I'll have TWO teen areas, one geared towards the older set and one geared towards the younger, but allowing ages 12-17 to go to either as they care to. In the meantime, be sure to check out the policy of the cruise line you're considering AND the facilities offered on the ship you're cruising on. Also, be aware that when a sailing has relatively few kids sailing, they'll often combine age groups. That could work for or against you, depending on your child. For the record, Disney Cruise Line has one area for all teens ages 13+ and they have one set of activities.

* Castaway Cay day can be super-boring.

Those who have been there are probably shocked at that one, but it's true. There's a teen-only beach, but there was no one there for a good chunk of the day so if you want a chance to experience Serenity Bay (the adults-only beach) make absolutely certain that you sign your teen up in advance for the shore excursion called The Wild Side. It's for teens only, takes 4 hours, costs a very reasonable $35, and the vast majority of teens seem to participate. At $15, the Banana Boat ride is also a good idea, and there's an afternoon "teen" time to do it, too. Skip arranging for these activities and you may find that your teen has no one other than you to hang with until mid-afternoon. (Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, but you can forget the cabana massage, catching up on your reading, the romantic stroll down the beach, or whatever other vision you have of making Serenity Bay your own personal grown-up paradise.) Maybe this situation wouldn't be the case over peak holidays or summer, but this was a fairly busy cruise (as most are for this line) and I have to think it often works out this way. (Side note - Be sure your youth is well-coated with sunblock because there is VERY little shade on the teen beach .)

So is a Disney cruise a good idea for a teen? Well, if all the children going are teens then no, probably not. If you've got some younger children in the group, too, though, then Disney might be a good choice. While other lines have good youth programming and many ships have nice youth facilities, Disney takes the prize hands-down for providing the best cruise vacation experience for the younger set... and when the little ones are happy then the adults are happy, despite the lack of some of the adult activities common on other ships (like a casino, adult-themed games, and plenty of shopping). Justin says a Disney cruise beats staying home, but wouldn't be his first choice. My nearly-10-year-old daughter has yet to do a cruise she didn't love, though, and while she would take a Disney cruise any day over all others, she'd be happy on nearly any ship that made even half an attempt at a youth program.

In summary, if providing the best vacation for kids under 10 is your focus, Disney Cruise Line is a great choice. If amusing the little ones AND the adults is equally important check out Princess or Celebrity, and if you want to make everyone happy, including your teens, check out Royal Caribbean's Voyager and Freedom-class ships. Do yourself the biggest favor of all by working with a travel agent who is a CLIA-certified cruise counselor. It won't cost you anything more than booking online (and may cost you less!), and you'll be able to pick the brain of someone that has first-hand knowledge of many different lines and their ships."
