Tony writes:

"My wife and I just arrived back from WDW on the 18th
December after staying 8 days. The meal plan is a great
money saver, but it requires much planning. we stayed in Pop
Century which was excellent. Our person in Concierge told us
that most people have been making reservations 180 days out
for their evening meals. we found it almost impossible to
get reservations at night (almost all places are booked way
in advance). when we did, such as China, we rushed. also at
Sci Fi Diner the waiter had a total change of attitude when
we said we were on the meal plan, (not for the better). I
suspect due to 15% tip being included which they now get
taxed on due to it not being cash tip.

We wound up using most of our sit down meals as lunches as
walking in was much easier. We also found that by weeks end
we had to eat 2 sit downs every day, leaving us rather
stuffed. Disney’s policy on use it or lose it does not seem
fair. They should allow you to save it for a year. I will be
looking into purchasing half a meal plan the next time we
go.

As far as Pleasure Island / Market Place most places require
a surcharge for the meal plan, The Irish Pub does not take
it (excellent food). Rainforest café does not take it. House
of Blues does not take it. Captain Jacks does but food is
terrible. Planet Hollywood does with a surcharge.

Again the only way I would do it again is if I can purchase
the meal plan for half the week then you are not set to a
schedule and risk leaving dinners at WDW that you paid for.
If you find you are out of counter meals they will take sit
downs for them (doesn’t quite seem fair. seems you should
get 2 for 1.)

I suggest using all your sit downs as they are your best
value."

Trying to fit in all those meals can be a problem. That's
why Donna and I eat and pay as we go.

Larry and Kim write about our travel agent, Beth:

"Elizabeth,

I just wanted to forward to you and your employers our
appreciation and gratitude for all your help and patience
booking our trip to WDW. We have just returned and we had a
wonderful time and your recommendation to stay at the
Wilderness Lodge was absolutely perfect. We couldn't have
been happier with our room location.

I also want to thank you again for your patience with us and
our last minute (literally) booking, especially with the
hurricane menacing you and the threat of your home being
flooded away. Despite our frantic and numerous bothersome
emails, due to our own panic, you were nothing but entirely
professional, prompt, and most important for a Disney trip,
cheerful. Again, thank you for our successful trip and we
will contact you in the future when we plan on returning to
WDW."

NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD"

WALT DISNEY WORLD

"Walt Disney World Resort takes listeners inside the world's
No. 1 vacation destination when 'Walt Disney World Resort:
Plugged In,' a weekly podcast, debuts Dec. 25 as part of the
'Happiest Celebration on Earth,' a global commemoration of
50 years of Disney theme parks. Hosted by David Brady, the
official Walt Disney World podcast will feature a lively mix
of exclusive content including behind-the-scenes tours of
Disney's four Florida theme parks, celebrity interviews,
news about upcoming events and conversations with Walt
Disney Imagineers, the men and women responsible for the
design, creation and expansion of the company's theme parks
and resorts.

Listeners can subscribe to the free audio program at
disneyworld.com/podcast) or through the iTunes Podcast
Directory. The podcasts are being produced exclusively for
the fast growing medium and can be enjoyed at the listener's
convenience with a computer or portable audio player such as
the Apple iPod." (Source: Walt Disney World Resort,

"SeaWorld Orlando said Friday it plans to open a new water-
theme park in March 2008, a change from the 2007 launch
announced last summer.

The International Drive attraction said it needs more time
to work on details of the park, which would join the
original SeaWorld and Discovery Cove, its smaller,
reservation-only venue." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 12/17/05)
--------------------------------
"Sure, there are the theme parks, especially the Disney
ones, all bedazzling in their Christmas finery... But, for
me, it isn't Christmas until I've toured Central Florida
hotel lobbies... And seeing a decorated hotel lobby is a lot
cheaper than visiting a theme park..."

* Gaylord Palms

- 54-foot Christmas tree in the 4.5-acre atrium-lobby
- brunches with Mrs. Santa at Villa de Flora

* Disney's Grand Floridian

- old-fashion decorated tree in the atrium-lobby

- pianist playing Christmas music
- free roasted chestnuts

* The Ritz at Grande Lakes Orlando

SeaWorld Orlando has raised its one-day admission price:
$61.95 + tax for adults; $49.95 + tax for children.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay will raise its one-day admission
January 2: $57.95 + tax for adults; $47.95 + tax for
children, ages 3 to 9.

"But both parks sweetened the deal by offering visitors the
option of exchanging the one-day tickets for a 'personalized
pass.' That will allow customers to return to the park where
they purchased the ticket as many times as they want during
the next six days.

Discovery Cove, SeaWorld's sister park in Orlando, also is
raising prices, effective Jan. 1, from $259 to $279 a day.
The new Discovery Cove admission deal includes snacks,
beverage, breakfast and lunch." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 12/15/05)

NOTE: Disney, SeaWorld, Busch Gardens and Universal
typically raise their prices this time of year. Affordable
Disney Members should contact our ticket agent and buy their
tickets before the increase! Your savings can be
substantial. Since Disney tickets don't expire until 14 days
after first use - tickets with the no expiration option
never expire - you can buy your tickets now and put them
away until you're ready to use them. That's another reason
to join our Disney family!

"On Wednesday, the airport board voted to revise some of the
rules for ground transportation companies, including changes
that some board members indicated could be unfair to Disney.

The new rules say that Disney cannot post "greeters" on the
second level of the airport, where most transportation
companies meet their customers near baggage claim. Instead,
the rules say, Mears Transportation Group -- the company
that operates the shuttle for Disney -- can post its
employees there to meet Magical Express riders."

Dr. Heatherley is spending three weeks at WDW! He sent us
the following email December 5:

"Ordinarily, I would wait until I got home to email this
note, but this is a special event. Friday when we arrived at
the MK (fresh off the plane) we walked onto Main Street
where they were filming the Christmas Parade for 2005
Christmas Day. Crowds were a tad heavy but not too bad.
However, on Saturday morning, the floods gates burst with
people wanting to be 'on camera' with Regis and Kelly...

[We] got to the Emporium and a CM told us the walk to the
Hub would take from 30-45 minutes. (I really doubt that, but
we took the hint and walked back out of the park.

I am sending a couple of pictures that will give you an
idea of what the crowd was like on the outside of the train
station. Many of these people wanted autographs from Mickey
and Goofy, but most of them were jockeying for position
trying to get thru the train station.

We got on a Monorail, went to the TCC and then took a bus to
the AK. There was about 7,000 people there and we had a
leisurely afternoon, taking in all but the Tarzan show. The
Dinosaur ride is another story and I will tell you about it
later.

Oh, there IS Broadband at PO French Quarter in some of the
rooms. It transfers at 10Mbs. Not great, but better than
dialup. The cost is $10 for 24 hours."

Dr. Heatherley. sent us some valuable information on
ordering groceries at WDW. See the next entry.
=================================================
Dr. Heatherley sent us this note December 14:

"We are still at the World. It has been a wonderful and
Magical 3 weeks. Six days left and still much to do.

John, here is a letter I composed and want you to have a
copy. It may have some value for you.

'Dear Beth,

Thank you for telling us about the Shopping Service that
Delivers a grocery order to any resort at Walt Disney World.

Here is how it played out:
We called Marge Peck at 1-888-737-5710
or email dandmpeck@bellsouth.net
or CentralFloridaShop@WeGoShop.com

We gave Marge our order over the phone (we made our grocery
list first).

She went to Publix, a superior but reasonable Florida
grocery store chain.

She shopped for our groceries, just like she would her own
groceries. (We told her exactly what brands to buy, like buy
generic Tylenol and not the name-brand and be sure to get
the Gel-Caps.) That is exactly what she bought.

Marge called us and said she was in the checkout line, and
would be here in about 30 minutes.

Then she keyed the Resort into her car GPS unit and called
me. She told me within two minutes of when she would be
there.

To expedite finding my suite at the resort, she asked that
we meet her at the front curb, but that was not necessary
because she DOES KNOW the property.

She got here exactly when she said she would. Together we
carried my groceries to the room.

Here is how the cost of the service broke down:
The grocery bill was $75.14
Her delivery fee is $17 for the first $100 of groceries I
think.
The fuel surcharge is $2.
Total: $94.79

She gave me a 10% (on the groceries) discount for being a
client of your travel agency.
New total $87.17
She suggested the average gratuity is $10.
Total cost of the whole transaction $97.17.

Why would anyone want to eat in the resort room?
Well, when we eat at a sit down restaurant at Walt Disney
World, the cost is about $25+ per person without alcohol. We
were spending $120 average / day for food!

Over the 20 days of our trip, we calculated we would drop
$2,400 just for food!!!!

Okay, we got some healthy meats, cheeses, mayo, whole wheat
bread, veggies, and the 'fixin’s,' and paid out less than
$100. That savings IS A BIG DEAL!!!

And, here is one other tip for anyone who might have an
interest... You do have to meet her to pay for your
delivery, right? Fine, we did our weekly wash in the hour it
took her to buy and deliver our groceries.

Oh, BTW... have Marge pick up your clothes soap for you. The
resort charges a buck for the little single load boxes of
Tide.

I am forwarding this to
John & Donna Gross at AffordableDisney.Com,
Michael J. Hewell at TourGuideMike.Com, and
Deb Wells at AllEarsNet.com
Anyone headed out to WDW should join all three of these
websites, PERIOD!

These people will save you money, and tell you how to do
Disney like a Pro.

Dr. James Heatherley
Ex-Cast Member Magic Kingdom"

Thanks again, Dr. Heatherley, for the grocery information
and your generous comments!

WE'D LIKE YOUR IDEAS...

We're planning the activities at WDW that we'd like to offer
exclusively to our members in 2006. What would you really
like to do if it were made available? Have tea in
Munchikinland (in The Great Movie Ride)? Dinner in the

Beth, our travel agent, just got back from a visit to WDW in
December:

"Back from WDW with more to report. We stayed at the
Wilderness Lodge in a concierge level room. The security
guard phoned ahead to alert them that we were on the way in,
so there was a concierge representative on hand at the door
when we arrived. He helped us upstairs and checked us in at
the special concierge desk so we didn't have to stand in
line at the regular desk.

The room is identical to a regular room, but is on the
seventh floor which is accessible by room key only. We also
had nightly turndown service and chocolates each evening,
and there were comfy robes in the closet. The Continental
breakfast offerings were nice... assorted bagels, pastries,
and baked goods; fresh fruit; yogurt; dry cereal; juices,
and numerous hot drink offerings. There were plenty of
tables to eat at, including one area for children that
showed cartoons. I found the concierge employees to be very
helpful and readily accessible until about 10 PM daily. USA
Today was delivered to the room in the morning, and other
national papers (NY Times, Wall Street Journal) were
available in the concierge lobby.

In the afternoon there were cookies as well as cold
beverages (including canned sodas), and this offering
expanded later on to included hot soup and an additional hot
item as well as assorted beers in the cooler, cheese and
crackers, and some nice wines. In the evening there were
several dessert items plus cordials (Bailey's, etc.). My
only two gripes with the concierge F&B service were that
they completely shut down between offerings (so you can't
even get a drink), and that they close up around 10 PM.
Again, you can't even get a drink. We learned quickly that
you need to grab what you can, when you can, and stock the
frig in your room. (Our frig, by the way, was the old cube-
sized frig you used to have to rent as opposed to the nice
large refrigerators in the wooden housing that many of the
resorts have now.)

We used the boat service to the Magic Kingdom one time in
each direction. Going TO the MK we waited nearly 15 minutes
for the boat. Coming back, we timed it really well - but
then the electrical water parade was heading back and the
boats have to go VERY slowly past it so it took extra-long
to return to the Lodge. Otherwise, we used the bus service
to and from the parks. The outbound service was great. I
think 10 minutes was the longest we waited. In all but one
case, we went directly to the park we were headed for. The
one time we stopped elsewhere, it was to pick up more people
at the Grand Floridian. (Amazingly, although the rooms there
run considerably more on average than do the Wilderness
Lodge rooms, it was we who got to sit and the GF resort
guests that had standing room only!)

The return bus service was fine except for the one night
that we left Epcot. We took our time leaving the park rather
than running to the bus stop to stand in line. As we
approached the stop, we could see that there was still quite
a line so we sat on a bench. Every single moderate and value
resort line quickly dwindled, while the lines for Wilderness
Lodge and Grand Floridian remained lengthy. (There was a
separate bus for each.)

We took the last bus out of the park for Wilderness Lodge,
and there were STILL people waiting to go back to the Grand
Floridian! I have to assume that there was a transportation
problem somewhere because that is certainly not the norm.
(At least, not in my experience.) One bonus, though, was
that we saw around a dozen deer grazing along the roadside
as we went back to the resort. The bus driver said there are
several small groups of them in the area, and they lead a
very protected life at WDW - except that no one can protect
them from cars, so be very careful when driving around at
night!

In short, we had a great time at Wilderness Lodge, and I
wouldn't hesitate to stay there again, or to recommended it
highly to others. Concierge level would be worth maybe
$10-15 per day per person for breakfast if for no other
reason than it's relatively quiet and unhurried. If you
actually get back to drink the sodas, cordials, wine and/or
beer then you might save another $5-20 a day per person
(depending on your drinking habits). If you pay anything
more than that, it's for the service - and only YOU can
decide how much it's worth to you to have the concierge cast
members at your service.

More later on Mickey's Christmas Party, Turtle Talk with
Crush, the Fantasmic dinner package at Hollywood & Vine, and
more."
=================================================
Kim writes:

"We are ready to begin planning trip #4, but before we
determine the dates of travel, I have a couple quick
questions. We are considering traveling in April to
celebrate my children's birthdays. One of my children will
be turning 3. Is it true that he does not need a ticket for
admission if we arrive before his birthday? What about the
days after his birthday? What kind of documentation do you
need to show?"

>> If your child has a birthday while you're at WDW and
turns 3 or 10, you are NOT charged for the more expensive
admission. You get to be whatever age you are when you
arrive for the whole stay. So your child is free. I've never
known Disney to ask for ID for a child. If you're worried,
bring a birth certificate.

"One of my other children will be turning 2. (Their
birthdays are a day apart.) What is Disney's policy about
the value resorts if we arrive before his birthday? Online,
if I enter his age after his birthday, I am unable to make
accommodations at the value resorts, but if I enter his age
before his birthday, it will allow the accommodations. (I
have three kids.)

I'm just curious, because that may make a difference on the
dates we select. I don't want to purchase tickets in advance
only to find out that we didn't get enough and have to pay
gate prices or have to unexpectedly change to a moderate
hotel. Thank you so much for your advice."

>> If you arrive when he is one and he can sleep in a crib,
that will be OK. Disney allows four + a crib in the Value
resorts. Beth can sort this all out for you if she books
your room. Looks like you can save big by arriving before
your children's birthdays.

WALT DISNEY WORLD

"The Walt Disney Co. has agreed to settle a wrongful-death
lawsuit brought by the family of a 22-year-old man killed on

Friday it accepts responsibility for incorrectly performing
maintenance on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride. An
axle assembly came loose on the ride on Sept. 5, 2003,
causing a passenger car to jackknife. Marcelo Torres died of
injuries from the accident."

Disney's Magical Express

"A coalition of tourism officials and luxury-car and shuttle
drivers appeared Wednesday to have successfully fought back
an effort by Orlando International Airport to ban them from
greeting their clients near baggage claim...

Still, there were indications that more changes could be on
the way for Disney's Magical Express, a seven-month-old free
shuttle between the airport and the Walt Disney World
Resort. The service sparked protests this year because it
caused a downturn in business for taxi and other drivers."

Holiday Celebrations Aboard the Disney Cruise Line

"A magical tree lighting ceremony with Disney characters,
festive holiday décor, carolers, gingerbread house building
and even 'snow' that magically falls, await all those who
board a Disney Cruise during the month of December.

Just in time for the holiday season, both Disney ships
- Disney Magic and Disney Wonder - are decked with boughs of
holly and filled with holiday themed entertainment and
activities for the entire family.

It all starts at Disney’s private cruise terminal at Port
Canaveral, Fla., where holiday decorations and Disney
characters dressed in their season’s best await all who
board a Magical Holidays sailing. Onboard, guests find
highlights including:

* A nearly three-deck-tall tree-lighting ceremony in the
atrium lobby, where 'snow' magically falls

* A Christmas Day visit from Santa Goofy, with surprises for
all the kids

* International holiday caroling by crew members from around
the globe

* Special family time, when families join together to design
and decorate their own gingerbread houses

* A reading of T’was the Night Before Christmas by Mrs.
Claus

* Traditional holiday feasts in Disney’s three themed dining
rooms

* Multiple faith and inter-denominational holiday services

A ship-wide party to ring in 2006 and a New Year’s Day
tailgate party

The last stop for all Disney Cruises is the line’s private
island - Castaway Cay - where guests are treated to a
'Magical Wonderland,' a themed décor package that has
transformed the sandy Bahamian island into a 'snowy' holiday
hideaway.

In addition to 'snow' flurries, guests enjoy seeing
Christmas trees, Mr. and Mrs. Snowman (with shell noses and
tropical shirts), carolers and a sleigh full of presents in
the middle of the Bahamas. Even the island's tram that
transports guests across the 1,000-acre island has been
decorated to resemble a reindeer, complete with antlers and
tail.

At the beach, families learn the art of sand sculpting,
while kids try their hand at holiday themed children’s
activities including making candy cane reindeers, paper
plate angels and snowflake-mobiles.

Whether aboard or ashore, Disney Cruise Line guests will
find the first class cruise experience that Disney is known
for - now with a touch of the holidays - for every member of
the family." (Source: Disney Cruise Lines, 12/01/05)

Members should contact Beth, our travel agent.

Beth, our travel agent, concludes her trip report:

"I didn't really know what to expect from 'Ohana, but the
food was outstanding. Shortly after being seated (next to a
window with a great lake and castle view) we were given a
big bowl of fried wonton chips and three dipping sauces. I
wasn't crazy about the red and green ones, but the peanut
sauce is pure heaven. Then a big bowl of salad came. The
lime dressing was great, but not adequately coating the
lettuce so you really have to toss the salad a bit before
serving. Then came a bowl of peel-n-eat shrimp and a bowl of
chicken wings. The shrimp were called "spicy-sweet and
sour," but it's not what you'd expect. These big babies were
just plain yummy. The wings were coated with sort of a thick
barbecue sauce. Very good! Fortunately, this course is
followed with warm, moist hand towels and lemons for
cleaning up.

Our scalloped potatoes and stir-fried veggies came next. The
veggies were good and the potatoes were exceptional. Next
came the meats: steak, turkey, pork loin, and pork sausage.
They are served from long skewers, and each was very good -
especially when dipped in the peanut sauce! Finally, just
when we thought we couldn't eat another bite, the dessert
came - a big bowl of bread pudding with a hunk of vanilla
ice cream and bananas foster sauce in a pitcher on the side.
Truly heaven. If you're not a banana lover, don't worry; you
can't taste the bananas at all (and they're only in the
sauce so maybe they can leave them out for you).

All in all, simply fabulous food! My only two gripes would
be that the service is a little lacking, and then there's a
lady who pops in twice to "entertain." If she'd just sing
and play her ukulele that would be fine, but she gets the
kids up out of their seats both times to dance and play. I'm
trying to keep mine calm and get her to eat, so a lady
trying to get her out of her chair to play is the last thing
I need! In any case, I'd go back again in a heartbeat.

After 'Ohana we rode the monorail over to the Magic Kingdom
to check out the refurbished It's a Small World attraction.
You know the park is crowded when there's a long line for
that! The line moved quickly, though, and we were boarding
our boat 15 minutes or so later. The attraction looks
significantly nicer than it did before. Everything works
now, the colors and costumes are all bright and sparkling...
even the ceiling and the carpeting look better! It's not my
favorite ride, but it's sure better than it was from a
visual perspective. Unfortunately, you can no longer
understand the words to the song - in any language! Good
thing we all know the words already!

Next, I finally gave in and allowed my daughter to try
Stitch's Great Escape. I sat on a wall outside and talked
with a woman from New Jersey while our respective travel
parties checked out this one without us. Happily, my
daughter deemed it "not scary at all." Sadly, she wants to
do it the next time we go. I've deemed it the dumbest
attraction at WDW - although now I realize that Pocahontas
and Her Forest Friends might tie for that honor. Anyway, we
did a few more things before skipping the parade and Wishes
and heading back to the hotel for some ice cream before
bedtime.

This was a very short trip, and Sunday morning it was
already time to go. We thought we'd do something REALLY
different, though, and ride over to the Celebration Hotel
for breakfast. (For those not familiar, the town of
Celebration was created by Disney and is right across from
WDW.) The hotel's Plantation Room is a 4-diamond restaurant
so we were expecting big things, but were very disappointed.

The brunch wasn't starting for another 45 minutes, so we did
the regular breakfast. You get a choice of Continental
($9.95) or full American ($13.95) with no discount for
children. The Continental offering is a small buffet area
with cold cereal, pastries and muffins, yogurt, fruit and
cheeses. Coffee and juice are included. The fruit was good,
but the pastries were all either dried out or just plan
stale. We ate a lot of little muffins. In all fairness,
there was a chef preparing omelets, Belgian waffles,
pancakes and French toast to order for takers of the
American Breakfast.

What we saw looked and smelled very good, but the chef
prepared the requested items and disappeared for long
periods of time. What's more, I got the impression that this
was an "either/or" thing, not a little of each, and not
unlimited. The service was horrid. We had to flag down our
server for every beverage refill, and even for our check
(although by then we were the only ones there so it should
have been easy to see that we were finished and waiting). In
short, we could have had better food and better service for
a fraction of the price if we'd have gone to Perkins - or
even McDonalds.

Perhaps I wasn't in the best frame of mind to see a room,
but I asked anyway. The receptionist was clearly not pleased
that she had to get up from her desk, but given that there
was no one else around she wasn't exactly busy. She led us
to a standard room around the corner. There are many
different room configurations here, and I'm hoping (for the
sake of people that pay a lot to stay here) that the room we
were shown is one of the smallest. Size aside, it was fine -
but for over $200 a night I expected more. I don't know what
exactly, but more.

In summary, the town is quaint with lots of little shops and
plenty of restaurants within walking distance of the hotel,
so if you want a romantic getaway for two it would work -
but if you have the kids along, choose a Disney deluxe
resort instead. It's going to be awhile before I give this
hotel - and it's restaurant - another chance.

I'll be going back to WDW in a few weeks. That's all for
now!"
