Cherry writes about her Spring Break vacation at WDW:

"Hi John,

My 17 year old, her teenage boyfriend, my sister, and I spent the week (4/3-9/06) in a cabin at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. A prime concern for appropriate yet affordable sleeping arrangements was resolved with the cabin's one bedroom with full sized bed and set of bunk beds (for the three girls) and a Murphy bed in the living room area (for the guy). This was a lower cost alternative to other Disney properties with full kitchen and two separate sleeping areas. Other perks included a private deck with picnic table and outdoor grill, and quiet, beautiful surroundings.

Thanks to my annual pass rate*, the cabin was only $213 a night including tax. We drove down from Georgia and carried most of our food with us including homemade spaghetti sauce, beef stew, hamburger patties, and marinated chicken breasts (all frozen) plus bagged salad, boxed pasta mixes, baking potatoes, and canned vegetables for quick but good meals. The food we ate in our cabin was much better than most of what we've previously eaten in the parks and we saved lots of money on food costs.

The two teenagers expressed to me by our third day that they liked this resort better than any of the others we have stayed in previously. They appreciated the privacy of the cabin, easy access to the outdoors, and they were more comfortable in the casual, slower paced atmosphere of this resort. They especially enjoyed driving around in the electric golf cart we rented for the week. The resort is too large and spread out to travel on foot; the bus system is more complicated than at other resorts; and driving your own car inside the resort is discouraged. Very little, if any, parking for cars is available at the resort bus stops, restaurants, shops, and activities. However, there is ample parking for the electric carts and we noted that some people brought their own carts!

Unfortunately, many people discovered the worth of the cart after arriving and none were available if not reserved weeks ahead of time. Of course, the $44 per day cost is not acceptable for every budget but all four of us loved the cart and the cost was offset by our savings on food and lodging expense. Riding on smooth, paved roads in an electric cart was very pleasant in the mild, spring temperatures and allowed us to experience more of the beauty of the 'wilderness' than we could by bus. And making a quick run to the resort store for more bread or sodas was much easier by cart than by bus. But next time I'll bring more sodas - a six-pack of sodas was nearly $6.00!

Though the cabin definitely turned out to be the right decision for this trip, there were some negatives. I've never had a problem in the past with cleanliness of other Disney properties; however, we noticed as soon as we arrived that the linoleum floor in the kitchen was dirty. The upper edges of the kitchen and bathroom counters had not been cleaned recently and dirt/dust had built up in crevices around the baseboards. I expect housekeeping would have cleaned it for us on request but we found it easier at the time to take care of it ourselves as we unpacked the car and put our groceries and clothes away.

Only one bathroom for the four of us was a major inconvenience. Also, the bedroom didn't cool as well as the rest of the cabin. We turned the thermostat down to 68 at night to keep the girls' room cool enough, especially for me in the upper bunk, but this made the area of the Murphy bed too cool. Ceiling fans could have helped this situation and I'm surprised Disney didn't include them in the cabins as they do in other resort accommodations.

As I mentioned earlier, the bus transportation is more complicated and time consuming in this resort than others. You must first walk to a bus stop in your cabin area to catch another bus that will take you to one of the two bus stop 'depots' for transportation to the parks. The distance to that first bus stop can be a 10 minute walk depending on the location of your cabin. This double bus system was confusing to me the first time I tried it but it didn't take long to get the hang of it. It did add considerable time on the trip to the parks. Driving our cart straight to the appropriate 'depot' for the bus to the parks was preferable.

We did plan a few meals in the restaurants. We enjoyed the Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue dinner and show in the resort one night. The show was entertaining and the fried chicken and ribs were okay but not worth the money. We ate dinner at the Nine Dragons Chinese restaurant in EPCOT one night - and won't do that again. But, as always, we loved the Crystal Palace character buffet lunch in Magic Kingdom and the crab at Fulton's Crab House - though it is very pricey. My 20% discount with the Disney Dining Experience card* helped with all restaurant meals except Fulton's where my 10% annual pass discount helped.

Of course the teenagers wanted to visit Universal's Islands of Adventure and I was [able to] get a ticket for 5 consecutive days for the price of one*. They had time for only 2 days but the savings for the second day more than covered the cost of the Mears bus transportation to get them there and back ($15 each round trip). I wasn't so lucky on the cost of their 2 day Disney park hoppers, which were very expensive in comparison. I also discovered that the cost of the Universal Express Plus Pass goes up drastically as you get closer to the day you want to use it. I had ordered it for only one day when the cost was $20 each. When I went back later to order for the second day the price had gone up to $35 each - so the kids didn't get the second one. However, they arrived at the gate before the park opened the second day and were able to ride all their favorite rides, and many twice, by 3:00 pm even without the Pass!

All four of us rode the new ride Soarin' at EPCOT and absolutely loved it. It is a ride for ALL ages. Beth might appreciate that I was at Animal Kingdom on the opening morning of Expedition Everest and, of course, the ride was closed to the public until 2:00 pm. I'm envious of her participation in the festivities! (smile) I was able to pick up six of the limited edition pins for the ride's opening (my husband and I are avid collectors!) but never got to enjoy the ride itself! Maybe next trip.."

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"You'll never guess what I did last weekend... I went on a Disney cruise!

It's important that I first point out that Disney treats travel agents well, but traditionally not as great as some other suppliers. For instance, I get invitations for free trips to Jamaica, Mexico, the Bahamas, and Las Vegas all the time. Disney has picked up my bill exactly once in all the years I've been selling their products - and that puts me miles ahead of most agents. So when they offered a 'special' agent rate on a Disney cruise it caught my attention. The normal agent rate for a 3-night cruise in an ocean view cabin in June would be about $450 p/p. The offer I got last week was $215 p/p! And that's the cruise fare, the port charges and fees, AND the prepaid gratuities! Couldn't say no to that!

So I quickly packed up my 8-year-old daughter and myself and we drove the 4.5 hours to Cocoa Beach. A half hour stop along the way made it not too bad. We checked into the Radisson Resort at the Port - one of my favorites in the area - and then changed for a quick swim in their nice pool. My daughter LOVES that she can swim under the waterfall there, and since she had no idea why her mother had dragged her to the other side of the state yet, that alone made her decide it was worth the journey. After changing, we walked next door to a family restaurant for a decent, albeit casual, dinner and then headed back to the room to enjoy one of the real perks of this resort.

We booked a 'king suite.' The main room had a living area complete with TV, sofa bed, chair and ottoman, desk hooked up for free high-speed internet access, a dining table for four, and a small kitchenette (sink, microwave, frig, coffeemaker, plates, utensils, mugs and glasses). It's separated from the bedroom by curtained French doors. The bedroom had a king Sleep Number bed and really comfy bedding, a nice large shower in the bathroom, and - here's the real treat - a big whirlpool tub in the corner of the bedroom. The room was clean and well-maintained and very cheery, and it also comes in a version with two beds so you can potentially get up to 6 people in these suites.

In the morning, we walked across the street to McDonald's for a quick breakfast, and then drove the two miles or so to the port. You need to produce a photo ID to get into the unloading area, and your name has to appear on the manifest. Then you can pull around and drop off your luggage before heading across the street to the parking area.

When we arrived there was only one parking lane open and there were two cars ahead of me. I could see an elderly man in the booth, but he sure seemed to be taking his time! It was about 10:15 by then and cars were starting to back up onto the street. As the first booth finally opened, a second man showed up to get the other booth going. You can't reach the booth from your car window so you have to get out and conduct your business standing at the window. After five minutes or so the first car moved on and we all pulled up. Then we waited and waited for the second car. When it was our turn I found out what the problem was... The credit card machine wasn't processing in either booth. Now, I had some cash on me, but not a lot. Cruising is, after all, a cashless vacation. I was given the option of pulling aside indefinitely or coming up with the cash, so I handed over $36 for the three-night stay. At least I got a good spot!

You again have to show your photo ID and appear on the manifest once you've crossed back to the terminal side of the street. Then you go through security - similar to an airport - and head up the stairs where you are stopped by someone who wants to review all your documents before you get in line. If there's anything you were to sign or fill out and missed they'll catch it there.

There are separate lines for people staying in suites, Castaway Club members (repeat cruisers), and everyone else. We got in the Castaway line, but got called in under a minute to one of the windows that was open. I thought it was funny that I was asked to sign a cast member agreement because I was traveling on an agent rate. It basically said that I agreed to be OK with the fact that full-fare paying passengers would get preferential treatment and that I could be asked to change cabins, dining tables, etc. to accommodate others. For the price I got, I'd have been OK with sleeping in the lobby so I signed."

In last week's issue Rosemary wrote:

"My daughters and husband were over at Ariel's Grotto so I was the lineholder. There are no signs posted as to the expected wait times or that your group must stay together. If you have never waited in this line, there are a series of turns in the line that bring you to a new 'room' so you never really see an end. Well, all of a sudden I found myself ushered into the room with the princesses! And my children are not with me!" Rosemary complained to the castmembers and eventually her family got to meet the princesses.

Rosemary's comments evoked a heated response from Keri:

"I was dismayed that you published Rosemary's comments regarding splitting up & then the cast member taking care of her because she complained. I have been to Disney 4 times in 3.5 years with my 4 year old daughter and NEVER held the line for her while she & my husband did something else. It INFURIATES me (and most other parents I've spoken to re: the situation) at how inconsiderate that is - especially with 7 and 12 year olds!!! They are perfectly capable of standing in line like everyone else. While it is commendable that the cast member accommodated her 'complaint,' I am appalled at her audacity that she complained at all!! Standing in line for the characters is no different than standing in line for the rides, and I am amazed at the amount of disrespect shown at the parks overall. Families like that make the lines longer and frustrate everyone else when they let their kids essentially cut in line - not to mention it sets a bad example for their children.

I usually enjoy reading your articles, but this time, I have to say, I was VERY disappointed. By publishing this without some sort of disclaimer, it almost condones the behavior of line jumping. For anyone who has experienced 'line jumpers' more than once (which I have - and have been treated VERY poorly by them and cast members when something has been said) it's hard to appreciate what the cast member did for them."

We always publish a disclaimer at the end of our newsletter:

"Disclaimer: We cannot guarantee the accuracy of information contained in THE DISNEY NEWS. Always check to be sure. The views and opinions expressed by others in THE DISNEY NEWS do not necessarily reflect the views of AffordableDisney.Com."

To be fair, Rosemary didn't see any signs warning her to keep her group together.

The manager handled the situation appropriately:

"The manager arrived explaining they were working on signs to advise families to stay together and advising of wait times and told me the lady shouldn't have told me to leave and that I could go back and see the Princesses still."

The castmember who originally asked Rosemary to leave could have defused the whole situation by allowing her to wait on the side for her children to arrive.

On the other hand, I understand Keri's feelings. Donna and I have stood and waited many times for what seemed like forever to see an attraction when a group of friends and family would run up at the last minute to join the person waiting in line. It is really aggravating when you're hot and tired and you feel that those who jumped in front of you might get a better seat!

So let's remember the golden rule: STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP!

Oh... and by the way...

I do publish comments at times that are controversial to encourage readers to respond! So if you read something that you disagree with, send your comments to johngross@affordabledisney.com and I'll publish them in the newsletter.

Thank you, Rosemary and Keri, for writing.

Beth, our travel agent, visited WDW in April and she looked into the availability of wheelchairs at the resorts:

"I stopped in at the concierge desk at AKL this evening to ask about the wheelchair issue. What I was told is that there is no 'official' program in place for the hotels to have wheelchairs available onsite; however, people seem to manage to get the park wheelchairs out and then they abandon them at their hotels when they leave. This gentleman says if they get their hands on one they hang on to it. They will then allow a hotel guest to use it during their length of stay, and if it's a standard (manual) chair they usually don't even get a credit card for deposit. They just do that for the electric chairs. In other words, they don't have ANY chairs that belong to the hotel, but they often have chairs from the parks that get left at the hotel and those are the ones they allow guests to use. Eventually, those chairs end up back at a park so the hotel can't say in advance if they'll have one on hand or not. Hope that clarifies!"

NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD"

WALT DISNEY WORLD

Early Entry at Water Parks: WDW Resort Guests can now enjoy Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach Water Parks one hour before the gates open to the general public!

Disney to promote dreams

"At its two U.S. parks, Disney will launch the "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration in October, where park visitors will be randomly awarded "dreams" such as a night in the Mickey Mouse Penthouse at Disneyland or private meetings with Disney characters." (Source: Reuters, 06/07/06)

Here's Disney's Press Release.

Here's Disney's official link.

It's every little girl's dream come true: Spending the night in Cinderella Castle.
--------------------------------
"Cinderella fans must wait a while longer before learning details of what a night in her castle might be like -- and then wait until January for a chance to win such a visit.
Walt Disney World officials say they haven't worked out many details about the part of their big, new, yearlong promotion that is piquing imaginations: a chance to spend the night in the royal chamber at Cinderella Castle."

A Disney Beach Vacation?

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I can't count the number of times I hear the comment, 'We want to stay at Caribbean Beach Resort so we can spend some time in the sand.' OK, maybe not those exact words, but it's obvious that many people think they can get something like a beach vacation if they choose that hotel. No doubt this misconception comes from the photos that Disney uses for publicity on that resort. Here are the facts...

* You can't swim in the lakes. There are signs saying as much, but they don't go into detail about WHY you can't swim in the lakes. They don't want to scare you, but the fact is, there are alligators in Disney lakes just like nearly every other fresh water lake in the Florida peninsula. Trust me when I tell you that you often can't see one until it's too late. Are they definitely in there? No, but they could be. (I see them all the time in the waters in front of the Yacht Club.)

* This is a HUGE resort. It even has its own internal bus system. This is the only moderate resort where the front desk isn't in the same building as the food and gift shop. In fact, they are on opposite sides of the resort. Only one of the eight pools has a themed water slide, so you may be quite a hike from some key areas of the resort.

* There are no elevators in the building at this resort, so request the first floor if you don't want to be carrying your tired kids up the stairs at night.

* Although this resort is one of the few that nearly always has cots available at $15 per night, you cannot pre-reserve them and you still cannot exceed the 4-person maximum occupancy (plus a child under age 3). If you have five people age 3+ then you need to stay in the Alligator Bayou section of Port Orleans Riverside (which, coincidentally, doesn't have elevators, either - although they DO have them in The Magnolia Bend section.) You'll get a trundle bed for the 5th person at no extra charge.

* All four moderate resorts and most of the deluxe resorts have access to water and offer watercraft rental. Caribbean Beach Resort is one of TWO moderates with lakeside sandy areas and beach chairs, the other being Coronado Springs. Several deluxe resorts have 'beaches.' In other words, the Caribbean Beach Resort isn't the only Disney resort to offer a sand and water experience."

Rosemary writes:

"John:

I have enjoyed your website as I have been planning our 10 day Disney World adventure since last summer/fall.

I wanted to tell you about my trip in case you could use any of the info.

First, we stayed at Pop Century and loved it. Asked for a room change to be closer to the Hippy Dippy Pool and after 3 nights around the corner from it, we spent the next 6 nights right at the pool. Very convenient to the Classic Hall too and appreciated the staff honoring our request (we did pay for preferred room). Also, had asked for and did receive the ground floor.

The food was delicious in the dining room. We shipped food to ourselves (we flew so couldn't easily transport it). The wholesome snacks tided us over between meals - nuts, jerkys, trail mix, power bars, cereals, crackers, poptarts, raisins, etc. We brought along plenty of baggies to make fresh supplies every day and the two days we went to the different water parks, we were able to picnic with our food alone. Also, it was so easy to snack while waiting in line and not feel like you were wasting time in the food lines just to get a snack. It gave us lots of fuel to do it all!

Now to the big story regarding customer service - it has a happy ending! I waited in the Judge's Tent for an hour to see the princesses. During this time, folks would pass me to catch up to their families. My daughters and husband were over at Ariel's Grotto so I was the lineholder. There are no signs posted as to the expected wait times or that your group must stay together. If you have never waited in this line, there are a series of turns in the line that bring you to a new "room" so you never really see an end. Well, all of a sudden I found myself ushered into the room with the princesses! And my children are not with me! I had suspected I was close so I had called my husband and they were en route, but were not fast enough to catch up to me before I went in. So I told a lady there, 'My daughters are on their way. They'll be here in a minute.' She said we had to all be together in the line the whole time, there was no line holding allowed and that I just had to go!

I left the Princess Room and was very upset! I had just wasted an hour of my time! I went back to the head of the line to speak to the posted attendant. I told her what happened, she said there wasn't anything she could do, so I asked to speak to someone who could do something about it.

The manager arrived explaining they were working on signs to advise families to stay together and advising of wait times and told me the lady shouldn't have told me to leave and that I could go back and see the Princesses still. I told him, 'I didn't wait in a line an hour so I could see them, but so that my daughters could see them!' By this time, my daughters were with me looking forlorn and disappointed. I pointed out that the signs were not there, that no one had advised me of the families staying together deal and that people had been passing me in order to catch up to their family. I just told him it was disappointing to waste an hour of my time and not get the opportunity for my daughters to see the Princesses. 'Isn't there anything you can do?' I pleaded.

He said, 'Come with me.' So he took us in the back way and we got to see the Princesses and we all lived happily ever after!

The point I want to get across to the folks reading this is: First, if you go to the Judge's Tent STAY TOGETHER AS A GROUP! Second, if you experience disappointment at Disney World just talk to one of the Cast Members. I'll bet he or she will do everything in their power to right the wrong. In this case, this gentleman did the right thing and he didn't have to. But it only took 4 minutes and saved the day!

Another thing I'd like to report: I hemmed and hawed about reserving a character meal - my kids were adamant they weren't interested! - so I never booked ahead. Finally, with 3 days left, they expressed interest so using the dining reservation number I had saved in my cell I called and was able to book a Princess breakfast at the castle on our last day. She only had room for 2. My 12 year old graciously declined so her little 7 year old sister could go. Two days before the breakfast, we stopped by the podium at the Castle to confirm our reservation and to ask if we could add another 2. They did have room and were happy to add two more - hey, it's another easy $70 for them! The point of this story: Even if you leave home without reservations to a popular character breakfast doesn't mean that you won't get one. Just call the dining number or go by the restaurant and see what they have available.

If you are like me and like a more fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants schedule, go ahead and put the Disney Dining number into your cell phone (or from any park phone you can call using *88). We did this another time reserving at Fulton's Crab House 1 1/2 hours prior to showing up when we knew we would actually be heading over to Downtown Disney. We were seated immediately. Again, this method does not guarantee you a reservation but it does quicken the process and if there is availability, why not secure your spot ahead of time instead of showing up and waiting?"

NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD"

WALT DISNEY WORLD

"A security expert speaking Monday at the National Fire Prevention Association conference in Orlando said new computer software, paired with video cameras mounted throughout theme parks, now allows security workers to monitor visitors' movements... one new device -- a GPS bracelet for children -- promises to assuage the fear of losing one's offspring in a crowd." Did Disney tone down Mission: Space in 2005?

"I can't prove it and Disney won't admit it, but I think the company toned down the ride by 2005. This literally is a gut feeling, backed up by data showing far fewer hospital visits by guests." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 06/04/06)

Yes, Disney has rules...

"In Disney World even Captain Hook had a sunny smile. There were fairy-tale princesses, amazing 3-D movies - and tons of sugar. His daughters adored it...Then Tim Adams was told he couldn't buy two glasses of wine at the same time."

It's camping without getting your hands dirty. Even a wimp can enjoy it. If you don't have a tent, the Fort Wilderness staff not only will provide one, it will set it up at your site, sweep it out and take it down, too....The only thing missing is room service." Gord from Canada writes:

"Subject: WDW March 6-12

We went to WDW earlier this month. I was not the most willing member of the family but with two girls 8 & 10 I felt compelled to go along for the ride. Man what a ride it was! I was never much for rides but I am now! The cast members are so helpful. The parks were fairly quiet and they would just walk up to us and ask if they could help.

Being from Alberta Canada it was warm, very pleasant the whole time. Although in Typhoon Lagoon we burned!! The one thing I really appreciated was a washroom at every turn, and each one of them clean. The Pirates venue was closed so we didn't get to see that. Cinderella's Breakfast was awesome. Soarin was just too long to get into, maybe next time. Expedition Everest was just pure rush, I've never heard my daughter scream so loud, ever! Even at her sister! Use the fastpass system, it works. I learned a lot from your website, thank you for all the info you put up."

You're, welcome, Gord. Upon arrival on our first vacation at WDW in 1993 I told the kids to see as much of it as possible since we would not be coming back! I changed my tune quickly after just one visit to the Magic Kingdom. I never imagined what an impact this magical place would have on me and my family!

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I recently saw a note in an Affordable Disney newsletter from a reader who commented that Pop Century resort didn't share buses with other resorts, while a friend of hers that stayed at "another moderate resort" said their bus DID pick up elsewhere. I feel that this needs a little clarification. First, Pop Century isn't a moderate resort; it's in the "value resort" category - and don't let the $116 per night price tag mentioned scare you off... The value resorts start off as low as $79 a night at certain times of the year. It's true that while Pop Century buses usually don't service any other resort, the buses servicing the All Star resorts often stop at two or even all three in that group. Usually, though, that's only outside park opening and closing times when each resort is less likely to have need of a full bus.

I should also mention that Port Orleans Riverside and Port Orleans French Quarter, while treated as separate resorts in some ways, are treated as one big resort in others. In addition to being able to use the pools at both sides, guests will often find that park buses stop first at French Quarter and then make the 4-stop loop at Riverside. (This is but one of the reasons that I prefer French Quarter personally.) If you ARE staying at Riverside, though, consider heading to the stop in front of the main building - or even walking over to French Quarter - during peak morning hours to increase your chances of getting a seat." =================================================
