Chris writes:

"Dear John, My husband and I are going to be in Florida on a
business trip... We currently have a reservation booked at
the Hampton Inn Orlando, W. Disney Maingate East. We plan to
buy a one day Magic Your Way ticket and will probably add
the Park Hopper feature. The hotel told us that they do not
sell the one day passes - that we can only buy the one day
pass at the park. Since we have always bought our tickets in
advance (and it's been a few years since we did this), I
have no recollection of where one would buy tickets at the
park itself. Can you give us any tips on the most efficient
way to do this process?"

Only Disney sells one day tickets. There is not enough
profit to make it worthwhile for retailers to sell them. You
can buy your tickets at the ticket booths at the entrance to
the parks. You can also buy your tickets in advance at Disney's site.
If you order less than one week in advance, you will have to
pick them up at the "will call" window. Otherwise, Disney
will mail them to you for $3.

"Also, I seem to remember that Main Street opens earlier
than the official Magic Kingdom opening time of 9 am... what
is the earliest that we could actually buy our ticket and go
through the gates to Main Street?"

The park scheduled for Morning Extra Magic Hour will open
one hour earlier than normal. Buses to that park will start
30 minutes before opening time.

Here is Disney's Extra Magic Hour schedule.

Disney Dollars have a new look to coincide with the

Donald Duck = five-dollar bill
Stitch = ten-dollar bill
Mickey Mouse = fifty-dollar bill (will retire after 2005)

"Tinker Bell may be tiny, but she's playing a big role in
the plans of incoming Walt Disney CEO Robert Iger. The
petite fairy - long second fiddle to Peter Pan and nowhere
near as popular as a Disney princess - will get her moment
in the sun as Disney tries to make fairies its next
character franchise." (Source: usatoday.com, 08/25/05)

"Water Mania, Kissimmee's first water park, will close on
Labor Day. The family-owned company on West U.S. Highway 192
has been sold along with the Country Hearth Hotel next door...

Larson [co-owner] would not disclose the selling price or
the buyer's identity. Nor would he say what the buyer plans
to do with the property, which is across from the entrance

Single-day and season passes for Water Mania may be redeemed

DISNEY CRUISE LINE

Staggered dining is now a permanent feature on the Disney
Wonder. The Disney Magic will test out the program October
29, 2005 through January 28, 2006. There are two dining
schedules:

* MAIN - 5:45 PM, 6:00 PM or 6:15 PM
* SECOND - 8:00 PM, 8:15 PM or 8:30 PM

You can request dining times, but they are not guaranteed.

--------------------------------
"Disney Magic's summertime visit to the West Coast was
'hugely popular,' according to Disney Cruise Line
executives, but don't look for a repeat performance --
seasonal or permanent -- anytime soon...

The not-so-fairytale ending for Disney-philes in the West,
however, is that after getting a taste of the Magic, it
could be years before it or any other Disney ships come
back... the continued strength of the euro over the dollar
makes building new ships in Europe (where nearly every large
passenger ship is built) unattractive."

DISNEYLAND CALIFORNIA

"Golden Vine Winery at Disney's California Adventure [is] a
respite for adults who suffer from Mickey burnout...

The Mission-style 'winery' is a bucolic spot nestled near
California Adventure's entrance, next to the park's tortilla
and sourdough bread factory tours and a 3-D film attraction
called 'It's Tough to Be a Bug!'" (Source: latimes.com, 08/29/05)

Rebecca writes:

"I signed up to receive The Disney News a few weeks ago, and
I really enjoyed the newsletter. I then started visiting the
attached links and found out how to become a member.

My family used to go to Disney World multiple times a year
for 15 years, but then my father lost his job and my mother
developed M.S. so we could no longer afford to go every
year. After 7 very long years of no Disney I managed to save
up enough money to take my family on a trip last October. As
soon as we were back on property the bug had bit again!

We planned a new trip for this september (the weather is
better for my mom's M.S. then, and my father fell in love
with the Food and Wine Festival). We still need to save as
much as we can and your wonderful program makes it possible
for people like us to continue to live out our dreams."

Thank you, Rebecca, for your kind words. You make all the
work worthwhile!

DISNEYLAND CALIFORNIA

"The only attraction in the park's Tomorrowland area that
remains basically the same as it was on Disneyland's opening
day in 1955, Autopia was Walt Disney's vision of the fun
that would arrive on the freeways of the future...

Other Disney parks around the world have their Autopias or
an equivalent. At Walt Disney World in Florida it became the
Indy Speedway. The version in Europe, near Paris, retains
the Autopia name but is assigned to Discoveryland and offers
carefully groomed boxwoods in a style reminiscent of the
gardens at Versailles." (Source: nytimes.com, 08/22/05)

Mike sent us his WDW trip report:

"Hi John,

Disney World was awesome. We left on 6/24 at 3 am and rested
overnight in South Carolina after 16 hrs on the road. We had
breakfast in New Jersey, lunch in Virginia and dinner in
South Carolina. We passed by M&T Bank Stadium and Camden
Yards in Baltimore. We arrived in WDW at 1:05 on 6/25. It
took about 20 hours of travel time, breaks and sleep time
not included.

We stayed at the All-Star Sports resort with a baseball
theme. They also had basketball, football, tennis and
surfing. Excellent accommodations not far from the food court
(good food ). it had two pools, one at our place and two
buildings over in the surfing section. We only had a short
walk to the bus stop. When you stay there Disney runs a free
shuttle to all parks. They run every 20 minutes.

We visited Epcot, Magic Kingdom, MGM Studios, and Animal
Kingdom. My favorite is Epcot. I rode on Mission Space twice
and the Test Track. At the other parks I rode on the Tower
of Terror, Soarin', and Space Mountain. (Dramamine came in
handy ) We saw the Lights, Motors, Action! extreme stunt
show from France at MGM. At Animal Kingdom we went on the
Kilamanjaro Safari. We went on the Kali River Rapids. We saw
the 3-d shows "It's Tough to Be a Bug!" and Mickey's
Philharmagic. We took the Maharajah Jungle Trek.

We took a trip to Splash Mountain. We saw Cinderella's
coronation at Cinderellabration (brought in from Tokyo for
the 50th). We rode on the monorail. We took the backlot tour
at MGM. We saw the Indiana Jones epic stunt spectacular
show. I enjoyed the eleven countries at Epcot. We had an egg
roll in China and a frankfurter in Germany! The fireworks at
Epcot were something to see with music and narration. It's
called IllumiNations. Clever.

The Magic Kingdom fireworks show was held at the Castle.
Wow! Again it was nothing like I had ever seen and it began
with Tinkerbell flying overhead from the Castle directly
over us and beyond (on a cable). The narration and music was
entertaining and fit the fireworks perfectly. And what a
fireworks show it was.

Earlier in the evening we saw the nightime parade of
characters on floats all lit up with elaborate designs. We
also saw two daytime parades on Main street USA. Even the
barbershop quartet was as musical as they were funny.

That is about all I can remember. I'm sure I missed
something. I took plenty of pictures and video. We didn't
have time for all that Disney has but we made a point to see
what we wanted to this time. We want to go again but aren't
sure when we'll be back. When you're there you lose track of
time and the days. I was skeptical at first but was
convinced the place has a certain unexplainable magic to it.
Kids of all ages will agree.

The weather was hot and tropical with sporadic showers.
After Disney we spent a day at SeaWorld and went shopping
the next day at the Florida Mall. We left for home on 7/2. I
sure felt that WDW withdrawal too and look forward to
returning sometime in the future. Thanks for the informative
and helpful website!"

Wow, Mike. My feet hurt just reading about all that you saw!
You're right. There is something magical about the way
Disney fills us with a childlike joy that we long for, but
cannot experience, when we get back home. I think Disney
puts something in the water! :)

I'm glad we were able to play a part in helping you have
such a wonderful vacation. Thanks for the feedback!

Initiative.' If enacted, U.S. and Canadian citizens will be
required to carry a passport for travel to or from certain
countries/areas that were previously exempt. [Note the

document* will be required for all air and sea travel to or

Beginning December 31, 2006, a passport or other accepted
document* will be required for all air and sea travel to or

Jim sent us some comments about his April vacation at WDW:

"Disney Dining Experience Card: I noticed some inconsistency
in the use of this card. SO why do I get 2? One as a back-
up? I thought so but when I went to Chef Mickey's I was told
if I had both cards I could have used them for all 13 in my
party. I only took one card with me that day but had both of
them for the next meal at Sci-Fi. I had one Priority seating
number with two tables and got 20% off for all 13 of us. At
'Ohana and 1900 Park Faire I only got the discount for 10.
If you get two tables (with less than 8), sometimes you are
not charged the automatic gratuity of 18-20 %. I saved over
$200 on that trip. If you are an educator, check out the
Disney YES Program. It is great! (The DDE is for Florida
residents and AP holders. See Beth's comments below about
the DDE. See our book for info on Disney's Yes Program.)

Disney Characters: I have never seen more characters out
than this time at WDW. On the Wednesday night when MK was
open 3 hours later, the characters poured out at 9:00 PM.
There was no Spectromagic parade that night do I don't know
if there was any connection there.

American Adventure: The EPCOT Vybes and Voices of Liberty
are now performing back to back for 15 minutes each before
the American Adventure begins. They are as good as ever.
Kevin (former Voice of Liberty) is now a Dapper Dan. He was
the voice at EPCOT in the late 80's and early 90's. Every
night before Illuminations you could hear his voice all
around the World Showcase Promenade saying "Ladies and
Gentlemen, in just 15 minutes..."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about the Disney Dining
Experience:

"I've been a member for about 6 months. I was told at the
time that I joined that I'd get a 'companion' card. It's
apparently meant for someone else in your household, but
they said I could put anyone's name on it so I used my
stepmother's because she sometimes goes without me. (She
actually lives elsewhere in Florida, though.)

On our first trip there were several occasions when she went
through one line and I went through another so it was nice
to have two cards... So yes, you do get two cards and there
are plenty of handy uses for that second one.

As to the discounts, my cards came stuck to a piece of paper
that clearly indicated on the back what all the discounts
were and where the cards were good... For the most part,
it's good at table service locations, but they are also good
at the food courts at the value resorts and PO Riverside and
French Quarter. The rules clearly state that it's only good
for up to 10 people and only one card per table, but the few
times that we used both cards at our table (for separate
bills) the servers didn't seem to have a problem with that -
and your reader's experience would suggest that he found the
same was true for him at some places.

My understanding of group gratuities is that the restaurants
that have a policy of automatically adding it on for bigger
groups say as much right on the menu. I guess if you divide
into two tables you could ask for two checks and then not
only avoid the automatic gratuity, but also you could use
both your dining cards and get the discount for everyone.
Having never eaten with a group large enough to think about
such things (other than groups where we were all pre-paid) I
don't have enough personal experience to say much more than
that on this subject."

Airline Inclusive Vacation Packages

Beth writes: "The vacation branch of this airline is
currently offering $75 per person off their Disney World
air-inclusive vacation packages for travel by September 22.
The advantage is obviously the savings. The disadvantages
are that you're not only subject to the pitfalls of a Disney
package (namely, cancellation fees), but also to the
airline's package (more cancellation fees).

If this airline services your home airport and you're
committed to going, and you can pay in full pretty much
right away (which you'd have to do even booking directly
with Disney if booking less than 45 days prior to arrival),
then it's a nice way to save. And yes, the free dining offer
still applies!"

Amy, a Lifetime Member, writes:

"I was writing to see if anyone has ever written in about
the Night of Joy concerts at MK. I was looking into it for
my 9 and 11 year old, but don't want to waste the time and
money if the crowds are too big and if we won't be able to
enjoy it. Thanks for the help."

I haven't gone, but I hear that the place is full of teens who
can be pretty loud and hyperactive. If it's crowded, expect long
waits to get on the rides and buses will be crowded at closing
time.

Protecting patient's privacy or Disney from bad PR?

"After a summer filled with tragedy at Disney World, Channel
9 has learned why it will soon be much more difficult to
learn about accidents and deaths at the theme park.

That's because the fire department that sends ambulances to
Disney wants to scramble all their radio transmissions. That
means the public probably wouldn't know when paramedics were
called out to an incident." (Source: wftv.com, 08/09/05)

DISNEYLAND CALIFORNIA

"Last week's collision on the California Screamin' roller
coaster occurred three months after Disney made major
modifications to the braking system without consulting the
ride's manufacturer.

State records show Disney changed two brakes in April - in
the areas where a purple train passed through without
stopping before colliding with a red train and sending 15
people to the hospital. The modifications were found to be
safe by state investigators during a June 2 inspection.

Disneyland and California Adventure now have menus in
Spanish and automatic kiosks where guests can order their
meals on a touch screen.

"Customers touch the screen to make selections and can
modify orders to hold the mayo or add extra fries. The
machines accept credit cards and cash. After the order is
placed and payment accepted, guests walk to a counter where
an employee distributes the food."

The Spanish menus are available at full service restaurants
at the parks and hotels.

HONG KONG DISNEYLAND

"If it is possible in California, why is Hong Kong
Disneyland reluctant to use environmentally friendly
fireworks, a member of the government's advisory body on the
environment asked Monday...

Disney's plan to stage nightly fireworks at its Penny's Bay
site in Lantau Island when it opens in September has been
subject to criticism from residents of nearby Peng Chau
Island and Discovery Bay, who have complained of excessive
noise and air pollution. (Source: The Standard, 08/02/05)

Beth, our travel agent, writes about a Vegas-style resort in
Hollywood, Florida:

"I had an unexpected opportunity to travel to the Hard Rock
Resort & Casino in Hollywood, Florida for two nights this
week. The resort is a stone's throw from the Ft. Lauderdale
airport and Port Everglades (cruise ship terminal). It's
also sandwiched between I-95 and the Florida Turnpike, so
very easy to reach. In fact, it's just about a 3-hour drive
down the turnpike from Disney!

Despite the Hard Rock name, this resort is NOT part of the
Loews hotel chain like the Hard Rock at Universal Studios.
It is, however, located on a Seminole Indian reservation
which is why they can operate a casino. The resort is about
as close as you're going to get to a Vegas-style resort in
Florida. The large casino attracts many celebrities
(especially local pro athletes), and a good deal of space is
dedicated to poker tables. Nickel and dime slots are
abundant, but quarter and dollar slots still have a solid
presence as well.

I'm sure the casino is busy during peak season, but this
week we found it to be very quiet, even in the evenings.
Beware, though... smoking IS permitted. There are 17 dining
establishments, including a Hard Rock Cafe and a Johnny
Rockets, plenty of shops, a comedy club, and a nice theater
which plays host to some decent headliner acts. The upcoming
Tim McGraw concert is sold out, but there are still tickets
available for Journey. :-)

The pool area is amazing, and really beautiful. Lots of
waterfalls, two zero-entry areas, a water slide and two or
three hot tubs, a sandy "beach," and even a number of
cabanas with TVs! The pool bar is located in the center of
the lagoon-style pool. Two thumbs up! The rooms are...
interesting. Our standard room overlooking the pool was of a
decent size, and the beds (complete with down comforters and
pillows) are VERY comfy. There's a great TV and sound
system, and you get a free CD of rock music hits when you
check in so you can try it out.

The complimentary shampoo and conditioner have a very
strange scent (and not a pleasant one in my opinion), but
the have decent coffee in the room and a free safe so that
made up for it, I guess. We requested and quickly received a
small frig at no additional charge - but don't even THINK
about opening the minibar. They warn you at check-in, but we
just had to take a peek, and wouldn't you know, one of the
candy bars moved. It didn't move much, but it was enough to
get my room charged $4.50 for it! The front desk took the
charge off without question, though.

The decor is on the minimalist/industrial side, but not
horrible. My only real gripe was the noise. Our neighbors
seemed to really enjoy the sound system - even after
midnight - but a quick call to the front desk solved that
problem. (You don't mess with these security guys when they
come knocking on your door!) Even after the music was turned
down, though, we still heard lots of slamming doors, voices
in the hallway, thumps and bumps from above, etc. If you're
a light sleeper, bring ear plugs!

Nearby is the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame, which is
conveniently located next to a HUGE Bass Pro Shop. I'm not a
huge fishing fan myself, but the fishing simulators and the
IMAX-like movie at the museum are pretty neat, as is the
boardwalk area outside. You can get admission discounts for
the museum inside the Bass Pro Shop, or use your AAA card.
Next to the resort is a living history museum of the
Seminole Tribe. I wasn't at the resort long enough to get
over there, but it looked neat. The Billie Swamp Safari
(featuring airboat rides) is nearby.

We took an hour-long journey north on the turnpike to check
out Lion Country Safari, and I have to say that I was
impressed. It took us about two hours two drive through the
wildlife park while listening to the CD narration. The
animals are free to roam, and they do. We had to stop
several times to allow zebras, giraffes, etc. to cross the
road. There are no fences between you and the animals, and
even on a day as hot as this one we had no trouble spotting
everything mentioned on the recording. Included in admission
is entrance to a second area that requires you to park and
walk. There you can purchase nectar to feed lorries that sit
on your hand, see a HUGE tortoise, wander through a petting
zoo, cool off in a little water park area, and more.

The highlight, though, is feeding the giraffes. There were
two there on our day, and both were very eager to stick out
their long tongues to grab small pieces of (purchased)
treats. At around $20 for adults and $15 for children the
Lion Country Safari isn't cheap, but you can download a
coupon from their website for $2 off per person, which is
the same discount AAA cardholders get. (See MONEY SAVING TIP
below for link.)

Southwest Florida has no shortage of tourist attractions. In
short, I was impressed. The two children with us, ages 13
and 7, had a great time, and I took turns with my adult
travel companion doing short bouts in the casino in the
evenings while the other one watched the kids. The "rack"
rate at this time of year is $149 per night + tax, and you
get a lot for that compared to other nice resorts in the
area - but you'll pay dearly for the food and beverage at
most places, and most places did NOT have children's menus.
(Hint: Try the soup and sandwich combo for $4.95 or the
prime rib dinner for $15.95 at the Blue Plate. Yum!)

Gamble early in the day if you don't like to be around
smokers, and don't forget that you shouldn't go into a
casino thinking you're going to win money. If you're looking
for a few days of anti-Disney to balance your trip out, or a
place to hang for a day before you do your next cruise, this
is a fun option."

product line comes to Southern California this fall when the
company's first flagship store opens in the Downtown Disney®
District, in Anaheim, California. The Downtown Disney

entrances of the famed Disneyland® and Disney's California
Adventure(TM) theme parks.

The dedicated 2,700-square-foot flagship Anne Geddes store
will offer a broad range of items from the Anne Geddes line.
Decorated with large prints of the Australian photographer's
stunning images, the Anne Geddes store will display the Anne
Geddes Baby clothing collection and accessories for infants
and toddlers, including a range of diaper and tote bags, her
most recent coffee-table books, calendars and datebooks,
plush toys, posters, photo albums, and other items. The
flagship location, by Kanner Architects, will also offer new

a roller coaster train rear-ended second train that was

HONG KONG DISNEYLAND

"I have been to Walt Disney's first theme park in China and
I can report that it is the scariest place I have been since
I visited North Korea a few years ago.

The US entertainment giant recently threw open the gates of
Hong Kong Disneyland to the media, nearly two months ahead
of its official opening. The tour, featuring free burgers
and fries and a ride on Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, was
presumably intended to convert cynical journalists to
Disney's all-American entertainment philosophy. Instead, it
created a slightly uneasy feeling of pervasive control."

2012. (Source: Hong Kong Bureau, Dow Jones Newswires, 07/31/05)

WILDERNESS LODGE - The Hidden Gem of Deluxe Resorts

Beth, our travel agent writes:

"When deciding which of Disney's 22 resorts is the best for
your vacation, you will no doubt be impressed with the
deluxe resort descriptions... everyone is; but you may find
that the deluxe hotels are a bit out of your price range.
Before you completely discount the option, consider
Wilderness Lodge - the deluxe resort that I think is one of
the best, and probably the most overlooked.

This resort is located on a gorgeous lake near the Magic
Kingdom, which is just a short boat ride away. It is done in
the style of a grand national park lodge, with exposed log
walls and trusses and soaring ceilings. Giant totem poles, a
gorgeous fireplace, and Native American artifacts are
highlights of the lobby, and the view of the lake from the
lobby is simply beautiful. A babbling brook trickles through
one corner of the lobby, passing under a footbridge and then
through an exterior wall to the outside where it becomes a
waterfall, splashing over the rocks to the freeform swimming
pool below.

We've blocked rooms for Affordable Disney readers at this
resort from November 27-December 20, and the pricing is even
better than an annual pass rate. These rooms are the
"courtyard" view - the best - and feature balconies that
overlook the lake and/or pool area. Many rooms give a great
view of the electric water parade held each evening, and of
the geyser that spouts high into the air every half hour.
You can choose a king bed, two queens, or a queen and bunks.
Rooms sleep a maximum of four plus a child under 3, and all
rooms have complimentary refrigerators. High-speed internet
access has recently been installed as well.

Here's a hint: If staying there for your whole trip is more
than your budget can take, just spend a night or two at the
end of your trip. The hotels will move your luggage for you
and it's a great way to end your vacation AND experience the
deluxe resort difference."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Epcot's Food and Wine
Festival Package:

"I've had a few questions from people that want to know if
the Food & Wine add-on that is available for people who have
booked packages in October and November is worth it. First,
remember that this package ONLY applies to Saturday nights
between October 1 and November 12. If Saturday night isn't
good for you then neither is the package.

Second, the Party for the Senses is a wonderful event, and a
lot of fun - but probably not the best place for your kids.
If you don't have someone to leave them then be sure you
read up on what you're getting into first.

You also get reserved seating for the 5:45 Eat to the Beat
Concert on that evening - a nice perk if you enjoy the music
of the group playing that night - and you get a wine and
glasses commemorative gift set (one per reservation). The
price is $119 + tax per person, and there is no discount for
children even though they don't get wine.

So is it a good deal? Well, if you were going to go to the
party anyway, then probably yes. Otherwise, I don't know
that I'd rush out to sign up - especially if you already
have a room-only discount of some sort that precludes you
from doing a package. I personally think I'd skip the party,
munch my way around Epcot, and listen to the concert as I
wandered past the amphitheater."
