My husband subscribed to your newsletter and made our Disney World reservations through your travel agent, Beth.
I've just spent more than 90 minutes on the telephone with Disney Reservations and am not able to get dinner reservations at ANY of the restaurants we wanted to eat at. We are celebrating a very special occasion on Saturday evening the 27th and I wanted to dine at California Grill with the Magic Kingdom and fireworks in view. NOTHING AVAILABLE. In fact nothing is available at any of the nicer restaurants.
I can't imagine this! I've been to Disney World many, many times and have never had trouble getting reservations... on the same day... before. When did all this mess start?
Needless to say I'm beginning my vacation with a very big disappointment! Can you suggest anything? Thanks for any help you can offer."
This has really become a big problem. On our last vacation we could find nothing available without a reservation - no matter how late! The Disney Dining Plan has made that impossible. It is very popular and everyone, of course, is booking out the restaurants months in advance.
The best I can say is to see upon arrival if there are any last minute cancellations. In the meantime, I would call every day several times a day to see if someone has canceled. Also - the restaurants in the theme parks are the hardest to secure, try those in the resort hotels. For a list of those, see Disney's Dining Finder.

"Those of you that have booked cruises with me know that I'm a cruise-aholic. Give me a good deal and I'm there. That's exactly what Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) did so I took them up on the offer and spent this past weekend on the Norwegian Sky. Given that combining your Florida land vacation with a cruise vacation is becoming a very "in" thing to do, I thought readers maybe interested in a quick overview.
First, a bit of history. This ship was originally being built for Costa. For reasons I no longer recall, NCL agreed to purchase the ship if a few changes were made - one of them being to add a lot more balcony cabins. As a result, the balconies are small and the doors to them are a little odd. If you happen to be in a cabin that sleeps three and are using the sofa bed as your third berth, you can't even get to the balcony unless you crawl across the bed. In other words, the cabins are small. Otherwise, though, the ship (newly refurbished) is in great shape and most of the public areas are lovely.
The crew is friendly, but not terribly well trained and they lack that "whatever it takes to make you happy" attitude that pours forth from crew members on other lines. Casual is the name of the game here, but we were amazed how many crew members' official uniforms were t-shirts! We were also amazed at how many people wore t-shirts and flip-flops and baseball caps to dinner, even in the nicest of restaurants. You can leave your sequins and tuxedos at home 'cause you sure won't need 'em here!
Dining was a bit of a disappointment. Most cruisers live for the buffets, and we also enjoy them occasionally. We had a balcony cabin so we were permitted to dine at a buffet in one of the dining rooms for breakfast. Good thing because the main breakfast buffets were boring with a capital B. So was the dining room version, but at least there was more variety from the menu.
This is the first ship I've been on where pizza was somewhat hard to come by, being offered only for a few hours a day. The lines for burgers and dogs blocked a big section of the main buffet area, so the already small, cramped spaces were made even more so by that logistical blunder. The salad bar section was nearly nonexistent, and although there were two sides to both the inside and outside buffets, most items were repeated on both sides (and both buffets) so there were few unique items to choose from. My daughter, who will eat nearly anything, actually had a hard time finding things she was willing to try. Finally, no ice carvings, no fruit carvings, no spectacular displays of food... Just small line-ups of average buffet food. No where near what you see with any other major line.
For dinner there are three specialty restaurants you have to pay extra for ($10-$25 per person) and they are worth every dime, although the regular dining rooms are OK, too. We just found the service in the regular dining rooms to be slow, and at peak times both main dining rooms have long waits. (NCL uses "freestyle dining" so you can eat whenever you want to, but if that's when everyone else wants to eat you'll wait a long time. Princess executes this concept MUCH better.) So for reliably better food and better service, pay the extra for the specialty places.
The entertainment was decent. Not stellar, but a good way to spend 45-60 minutes of your evening. The brand new casino is very small and smoking is permitted so it gets hard to breath pretty fast. The pools and hot tubs are adequate and there are plenty of deck chairs. We didn't try the spa and the fitness center, but both look nice. The kids' center leaves a bit to be desired (mostly blocks, movies, and Wii - no computers, limited craft projects), but my daughter (age 10) liked it - and it was worth $5/hour to use the service while in port and after 10:30 PM. (Otherwise it's free.)
When in port they offer the typical shore excursions at the typical high prices. NCL's private island (Great Stirrup Cay) is truly not up to snuff compared to others. It's fine if you have nothing to compare to, but we had to wait a VERY long time to tender ashore (even though it was late morning already) so we were a bit grumpy to start with. If I ever go there again I'll be staying on the ship. There is just one large gift and duty free shop, but two (small) jewelry stores. It was a short cruise and we weren't there to shop so that didn't bother us. The late night deck parties, billed as major events, were little more than dancing to live salsa music - which is fine, but again, not what you get from other cruise lines.
The bottom line is that this ship runs 3- and 4-night cruises from Miami so it competes with both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. I'd say Royal Caribbean wins this market hands-down, even though they ships they have doing the short cruises are older. I'm not a Carnival fan, but I'd even suggest Carnival over NCL *unless* you could get a great deal... and there are plenty of those to be had. Florida residents were booking this cruise from about $200 per person total for an inside cabin, slightly more for an oceanview or balcony. Non-resident rates were just a little higher - and kids can sometimes sail for as little as $99 each plus taxes and fees. So if you understand what you're getting and you have an amazing rate, go for it! If you can do Royal Caribbean, or even Carnival, for just a little more, though, that's the way I'd go.
*** Don't forget that The World's Largest Cruise Night is October 16. We'll have great "one day only" deals, reduced deposit requirements and more for that night, so if you're thinking about a 2008 or 2009 cruise let's start talking NOW so you're ready!"

Al Roker to Emcee, Charlie Trotter to Whip up Magic at Bocuse d’Or USA ‘Culinary Olympics’ at Walt Disney World Resort
Contest to Culminate Sept. 27 in Star-Studded Gala Featuring World’s Top Chefs
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - When the gold-standard Bocuse d’Or USA culinary cook-off unfolds Sept. 26 and 27 at Epcot in Walt Disney World Resort, TV personality Al Roker will take the stage Saturday to emcee the excitement. When the contest concludes and spatulas rest, culinary great Charlie Trotter, along with other star chefs from around the world, will host a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony fit for the most discriminating gourmet.
The opening-weekend event of the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, open to park guests, promises to deliver celebrity panache, high kitchen drama and extraordinary culinary moments.
Roker, together with Dana Cowin, editor-in-chef of Food & Wine magazine, will spotlight the action for Epcot guests in the park’s World Showplace arena-like setting. There, eight two-person teams of the country’s top chefs will turn up the heat in the kitchen with the hope that their culinary creations land them a top spot representing Team USA at the Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest - commonly called the Culinary Olympics - in Lyon, France, Jan. 27-29.
Epcot guests can attend the competition and observe the culinary wizardry. Each of the eight teams will serve up elaborate fish and beef dishes to be judged by a top-chef panel: Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Georges Perrier, Laurent Tourondel, and former Bocuse d’Or USA competitors. Dishes will be judged on excellence in taste, presentation, technical skill and overall kitchen organization.
The competition culminates Sept. 27 with a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony recognizing the first-, second- and third-place teams. Tickets are still available for the star-studded event featuring gourmet cuisine, live musical entertainment, dancing, a silent auction and a chance to meet and mingle with some the world’s top chefs, including the Gala Dinner Chefs, as well as contest founder Paul Bocuse, and the Deans of The French Culinary Institute, Alain Sailhac and Andre Soltner.
The Gala Dinner includes hors d’oeuvres, a four-course tasting menu, and a dessert reception prepared by Chefs Boulud (Daniel, New York City), Trotter (Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago), Patrick O’Connell (Inn at Little Washington, Washington, D.C.), Perrier (Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia), Tourondel (BLT, New York City), Soltner (French Culinary Institute), Salihac (French Culinary Institute), David Myers (Sona, Los Angeles) and Traci des Jardins (Jardiniere, San Francisco), and will be paired with Diageo Reserve Signature Cocktails and Moët Hennessy Champagnes. The highlight of the evening will be a Dom Pérignon toast and the announcement of the Bocuse d’Or USA winning team.

Wine Tasting a Breeze for Beginners at Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Sept. 26-Nov. 9
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - If you’re a wine neophyte, you can cut through the mystique of wine tasting to become a savvy sipper at the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Sept. 26-Nov. 9, 2008, at Walt Disney World Resort. So slather on the sunscreen, don comfortable shoes and begin the wine quest in Future World at Epcot.
As your tram glides toward the park entrance, review these simple tips for beginning tasters:
# Lift your glass by the stem to avoid warming the wine in the bowl of your glass.
# Raise your glass to check the wine’s color.
# Swirl the liquid by gently rotating your wrist; as the wine leaves trails, or legs, it reveals alcohol content. A wine with high alcohol content normally will have slow-moving legs.
# Sniff deeply and try to identify the wine’s traits, which could range from essence of raspberry to chocolate.
# Sip - but don’t swallow yet. Hold the wine and swish it across your tongue and inner cheeks before exhaling slowly through both nose and mouth. The taste will be that much more vivid!
First stop, Festival Welcome Center in East Future World. Celebrate the start of your grape expedition with a glass of bubbly at the center’s champagne and wine bar. There, Epcot cast members can fill you in on the day’s wine-tasting schedule and on details of special events such as Food and Wine Pairings or the Party for the Senses grand tasting.
Before heading outside, catch a complimentary wine seminar and visit the Stockpot Shop for festival gifts and the Inspired Vines shop for more than 300 wine selections from prestigious vineyards showcased at the festival’s seminars and private events, including Antinori, Caymus Vineyards, Château Cos d’Estournel, Silver Oak and Piper Heidsieck. You also can meet representatives from more than 100 wineries and purchase a signed bottle at the Bottle Signing location.
Complimentary wine seminars are scheduled daily, and you can explore more than 25 international marketplaces around World Showcase where ethnic cuisine and wine-pairing tastes range from just $2-$5. (Marketplace wines are available by the bottle at Inspired Vines). There are also some great ways to try new levels of tasting experiences: at one of the daily Food and Wine Pairings, or at a weekly Party for the Senses grand tasting.
Food and Wine Pairings ($55 per person, park admission required) are scheduled throughout the week at several popular Epcot restaurants including Tutto Italia Restaurant, Restaurant Marrakesh and Mitsukoshi Restaurant. There, winery principals lead you through a tasting of three wines that are paired precisely with complementary foods.
At Party for the Senses each Saturday night in the grand World ShowPlace ($135 per person, park admission required), you’ll taste some of the finest cuisine by more than 25 eminent chefs and sample from more than 70 wines and beers as you chat with the winemakers and enjoy first-rate live entertainment.
Afternoon Epcot Wine Schools ($125 or $135) including France, Italy, Spain and South Africa wine schools, take place Saturdays during the six-week fest.
As you complete your trip around the world’s longest, largest wine fest, favorite wines will be available for purchase at the Festival Welcome Center, says Jason Cha-Kim, beverage sourcing specialist for Disney Worldwide Services.
"You’ll have the opportunity to wine and dine around World Showcase and learn about the basics of wine from the very best vineyards in the world," says Cha-Kim. "You’ll come away from the festival with an understanding of the major wine-growing regions, how to taste wine correctly and really enjoy it, what wines to look for at home, and how to pair food and wine. It’s a great way to explore and learn about wines from around the world."

Thank you, Peter. And thank you all. It’s great to be with you today.
As you just heard, there’s clearly a growing trend towards "celebration vacations." More and more often, people are traveling to celebrate the milestones in their lives: birthdays ... honeymoons ... graduations ... anniversaries ... and many more.
We had already noticed this trend at our parks and resorts, but, as Peter pointed out from his research, seven out of every ten leisure travelers say that they’ve taken a vacation for the specific purpose of celebrating a special occasion.
This research further revealed that, when families take a "celebration vacation," they’re seeking destinations that provide something for everyone in the family ... including activities for children and, most importantly, activities for adults and children to enjoy together.
We were pleased - but not surprised - that, in Peter’s research, Disney Parks came out as the destination which families were most likely to visit for a celebration vacation. That’s because the whole idea of families enjoying experiences together speaks to the very essence of who and what we are.
Walt Disney originally conceived Disneyland as a place where families "could have fun together."
Over the years, we’ve taken Walt’s mission and grown it.
Now, beyond simply having fun, our parks have become places where families can build memories together ... and these memories are dramatically linked to the kinds of "life milestones" I mentioned a few moments ago.

We wanted to kick off our celebration vacation initiative in a really big way - a way that only Disney could do.

NEW YORK - Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free, as Disney Parks embraces a newly identified family travel trend called "celebration vacations."
In this new national trend, American families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions - birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more - with a "celebration vacation." In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones into magical Disney experiences.
And to kick it all off - a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009.
"Birthdays are the one occasion that we all share every year," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, at an announcement event today in New York. "We thought a free birthday ticket would be the icing on the cake as we extend this new ‘celebration vacation’ trend to Disney Parks."
Disney parks provide the perfect setting for this new style of vacation that celebrates the special occasions in life, Rasulo added.
Whether a guest is celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, Quinceañera or any special occasion, Disney parks already are filled with favorite characters, world-class attractions and entertainment, and legendary guest service - exactly the "something for everyone" that trend-watchers say families look for in a "celebration vacation."
"The special moments in your life become truly magical when you celebrate at a Disney park," Rasulo said. "Sharing a milestone at Disney connects families, friends and generations."
Nationwide Survey Reveals ‘Celebration Vacation’ Trend
A nationwide survey of nearly 4,600 adults conducted by Ypartnership - co-author of the influential National Travel Monitor - showed that 70 percent of U.S. leisure travelers have taken a vacation with the primary purpose of marking a special occasion in their lives - a "celebration vacation," as Ypartnership President and CEO Peter Yesawich termed it.
Respondents mentioned a broad range of events worth celebrating with a special vacation - not just birthdays and anniversaries but a first vacation with children, a job promotion or recovery from an illness.
Whenever something positive happens in their lives, people seek out ways to make them more special, Yesawich said, and vacations are clearly perceived as both an appropriate and desirable way to do so.
Time does pass quickly and there is a growing trend to slow down our frenetic lifestyles and stop to rejoice around the things that matter," he said. "Families on ‘celebration vacations’ are looking to truly commemorate moments in their lives - in special places everyone can enjoy."
Research showed that when they take that "celebration vacation," families are looking for destinations that provide activities for children and - better yet - activities adults and children can enjoy together.
Given these findings, it’s not surprising that Disney Parks topped the list of destinations where families would most like to celebrate these special occasions," Yesawich said.
Turning Life’s Special Moments Into a Personal Disney Celebration
"We see our parks as the ideal setting for a personal celebration," Rasulo said. "Guests can immerse themselves in their favorite stories and their favorite characters, creating a visit they’ll never forget.
"And when our cast members get involved, it feels as if the entire park is celebrating along with you."
At Walt Disney World Resort, guests can add on to the fun, choosing from more than 200 experiences ranging from breathtaking (magical fireworks cruises, sunrise safaris, diving the depths with undersea creatures) to mirth-making (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, character dining, kids’ pirate adventures). At Disneyland Resort, celebrants can book more than 50 magical experiences, including "My Disneyland Birthday Party" and unique Disneyland guided tours.

"But Walt Disney World and Disneyland are now poised to champion milestone vacations for families and friends in a breakthrough way," he said. "We’re asking our guests, ‘What will YOU celebrate?’
"Part of the celebration is all the firsts that magically happen at Disney Parks," Rasulo said. "Guests become the star of their own celebration. It could be a first trip to Disney or a first family vacation without the stroller. We want to make a first visit - and every visit - even more memorable."
Even if they’re not celebrating, Rasulo said, guests will be immersed in a "Celebrate Today!" spirit, making every day a party.

"We let him choose which park he wanted to visit... he picked the Animal Kingdom. I had special T-shirts made up for all of us; his shirt said it was his birthday and featured Animal Kingdom designs. We also picked up a birthday button from Guest Services, which often gets you special recognition from cast members that day."
Erin Foster, Scarsdale, N.Y., married and mother of three:
"My husband and I want to do something really special when our daughter graduates from eighth grade - we would love to take her to Walt Disney World with her best friends and her sisters. My husband subscribed to your newsletter and made our Disney World reservations through your travel agent, Beth.
I've just spent more than 90 minutes on the telephone with Disney Reservations and am not able to get dinner reservations at ANY of the restaurants we wanted to eat at. We are celebrating a very special occasion on Saturday evening the 27th and I wanted to dine at California Grill with the Magic Kingdom and fireworks in view. NOTHING AVAILABLE. In fact nothing is available at any of the nicer restaurants.
I can't imagine this! I've been to Disney World many, many times and have never had trouble getting reservations... on the same day... before. When did all this mess start?
Needless to say I'm beginning my vacation with a very big disappointment! Can you suggest anything? Thanks for any help you can offer."
This has really become a big problem. On our last vacation we could find nothing available without a reservation - no matter how late! The Disney Dining Plan has made that impossible. It is very popular and everyone, of course, is booking out the restaurants months in advance.
The best I can say is to see upon arrival if there are any last minute cancellations. In the meantime, I would call every day several times a day to see if someone has canceled. Also - the restaurants in the theme parks are the hardest to secure, try those in the resort hotels. For a list of those, see Disney's Dining Finder.

Beth, our travel agent, filed this cruise report:
"Those of you that have booked cruises with me know that I'm a cruise-aholic. Give me a good deal and I'm there. That's exactly what Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) did so I took them up on the offer and spent this past weekend on the Norwegian Sky. Given that combining your Florida land vacation with a cruise vacation is becoming a very "in" thing to do, I thought readers maybe interested in a quick overview.
First, a bit of history. This ship was originally being built for Costa. For reasons I no longer recall, NCL agreed to purchase the ship if a few changes were made - one of them being to add a lot more balcony cabins. As a result, the balconies are small and the doors to them are a little odd. If you happen to be in a cabin that sleeps three and are using the sofa bed as your third berth, you can't even get to the balcony unless you crawl across the bed. In other words, the cabins are small. Otherwise, though, the ship (newly refurbished) is in great shape and most of the public areas are lovely.
The crew is friendly, but not terribly well trained and they lack that "whatever it takes to make you happy" attitude that pours forth from crew members on other lines. Casual is the name of the game here, but we were amazed how many crew members' official uniforms were t-shirts! We were also amazed at how many people wore t-shirts and flip-flops and baseball caps to dinner, even in the nicest of restaurants. You can leave your sequins and tuxedos at home 'cause you sure won't need 'em here!
Dining was a bit of a disappointment. Most cruisers live for the buffets, and we also enjoy them occasionally. We had a balcony cabin so we were permitted to dine at a buffet in one of the dining rooms for breakfast. Good thing because the main breakfast buffets were boring with a capital B. So was the dining room version, but at least there was more variety from the menu.
This is the first ship I've been on where pizza was somewhat hard to come by, being offered only for a few hours a day. The lines for burgers and dogs blocked a big section of the main buffet area, so the already small, cramped spaces were made even more so by that logistical blunder. The salad bar section was nearly nonexistent, and although there were two sides to both the inside and outside buffets, most items were repeated on both sides (and both buffets) so there were few unique items to choose from. My daughter, who will eat nearly anything, actually had a hard time finding things she was willing to try. Finally, no ice carvings, no fruit carvings, no spectacular displays of food... Just small line-ups of average buffet food. No where near what you see with any other major line.
For dinner there are three specialty restaurants you have to pay extra for ($10-$25 per person) and they are worth every dime, although the regular dining rooms are OK, too. We just found the service in the regular dining rooms to be slow, and at peak times both main dining rooms have long waits. (NCL uses "freestyle dining" so you can eat whenever you want to, but if that's when everyone else wants to eat you'll wait a long time. Princess executes this concept MUCH better.) So for reliably better food and better service, pay the extra for the specialty places.
The entertainment was decent. Not stellar, but a good way to spend 45-60 minutes of your evening. The brand new casino is very small and smoking is permitted so it gets hard to breath pretty fast. The pools and hot tubs are adequate and there are plenty of deck chairs. We didn't try the spa and the fitness center, but both look nice. The kids' center leaves a bit to be desired (mostly blocks, movies, and Wii - no computers, limited craft projects), but my daughter (age 10) liked it - and it was worth $5/hour to use the service while in port and after 10:30 PM. (Otherwise it's free.)
When in port they offer the typical shore excursions at the typical high prices. NCL's private island (Great Stirrup Cay) is truly not up to snuff compared to others. It's fine if you have nothing to compare to, but we had to wait a VERY long time to tender ashore (even though it was late morning already) so we were a bit grumpy to start with. If I ever go there again I'll be staying on the ship. There is just one large gift and duty free shop, but two (small) jewelry stores. It was a short cruise and we weren't there to shop so that didn't bother us. The late night deck parties, billed as major events, were little more than dancing to live salsa music - which is fine, but again, not what you get from other cruise lines.
The bottom line is that this ship runs 3- and 4-night cruises from Miami so it competes with both Carnival and Royal Caribbean. I'd say Royal Caribbean wins this market hands-down, even though they ships they have doing the short cruises are older. I'm not a Carnival fan, but I'd even suggest Carnival over NCL *unless* you could get a great deal... and there are plenty of those to be had. Florida residents were booking this cruise from about $200 per person total for an inside cabin, slightly more for an oceanview or balcony. Non-resident rates were just a little higher - and kids can sometimes sail for as little as $99 each plus taxes and fees. So if you understand what you're getting and you have an amazing rate, go for it! If you can do Royal Caribbean, or even Carnival, for just a little more, though, that's the way I'd go.
*** Don't forget that The World's Largest Cruise Night is October 16. We'll have great "one day only" deals, reduced deposit requirements and more for that night, so if you're thinking about a 2008 or 2009 cruise let's start talking NOW so you're ready!"

Contest to Culminate Sept. 27 in Star-Studded Gala Featuring World’s Top Chefs
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - When the gold-standard Bocuse d’Or USA culinary cook-off unfolds Sept. 26 and 27 at Epcot in Walt Disney World Resort, TV personality Al Roker will take the stage Saturday to emcee the excitement. When the contest concludes and spatulas rest, culinary great Charlie Trotter, along with other star chefs from around the world, will host a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony fit for the most discriminating gourmet.
The opening-weekend event of the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, open to park guests, promises to deliver celebrity panache, high kitchen drama and extraordinary culinary moments.
Roker, together with Dana Cowin, editor-in-chef of Food & Wine magazine, will spotlight the action for Epcot guests in the park’s World Showplace arena-like setting. There, eight two-person teams of the country’s top chefs will turn up the heat in the kitchen with the hope that their culinary creations land them a top spot representing Team USA at the Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest - commonly called the Culinary Olympics - in Lyon, France, Jan. 27-29.
Epcot guests can attend the competition and observe the culinary wizardry. Each of the eight teams will serve up elaborate fish and beef dishes to be judged by a top-chef panel: Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Georges Perrier, Laurent Tourondel, and former Bocuse d’Or USA competitors. Dishes will be judged on excellence in taste, presentation, technical skill and overall kitchen organization.
The competition culminates Sept. 27 with a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony recognizing the first-, second- and third-place teams. Tickets are still available for the star-studded event featuring gourmet cuisine, live musical entertainment, dancing, a silent auction and a chance to meet and mingle with some the world’s top chefs, including the Gala Dinner Chefs, as well as contest founder Paul Bocuse, and the Deans of The French Culinary Institute, Alain Sailhac and Andre Soltner.
The Gala Dinner includes hors d’oeuvres, a four-course tasting menu, and a dessert reception prepared by Chefs Boulud (Daniel, New York City), Trotter (Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago), Patrick O’Connell (Inn at Little Washington, Washington, D.C.), Perrier (Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia), Tourondel (BLT, New York City), Soltner (French Culinary Institute), Salihac (French Culinary Institute), David Myers (Sona, Los Angeles) and Traci des Jardins (Jardiniere, San Francisco), and will be paired with Diageo Reserve Signature Cocktails and Moët Hennessy Champagnes. Wine Tasting a Breeze for Beginners at Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Sept. 26-Nov. 9
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - If you’re a wine neophyte, you can cut through the mystique of wine tasting to become a savvy sipper at the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival Sept. 26-Nov. 9, 2008, at Walt Disney World Resort. So slather on the sunscreen, don comfortable shoes and begin the wine quest in Future World at Epcot.
As your tram glides toward the park entrance, review these simple tips for beginning tasters:
# Lift your glass by the stem to avoid warming the wine in the bowl of your glass.
# Raise your glass to check the wine’s color.
# Swirl the liquid by gently rotating your wrist; as the wine leaves trails, or legs, it reveals alcohol content. A wine with high alcohol content normally will have slow-moving legs.
# Sniff deeply and try to identify the wine’s traits, which could range from essence of raspberry to chocolate.
# Sip - but don’t swallow yet. Hold the wine and swish it across your tongue and inner cheeks before exhaling slowly through both nose and mouth. The taste will be that much more vivid!
First stop, Festival Welcome Center in East Future World. Celebrate the start of your grape expedition with a glass of bubbly at the center’s champagne and wine bar. There, Epcot cast members can fill you in on the day’s wine-tasting schedule and on details of special events such as Food and Wine Pairings or the Party for the Senses grand tasting.
Before heading outside, catch a complimentary wine seminar and visit the Stockpot Shop for festival gifts and the Inspired Vines shop for more than 300 wine selections from prestigious vineyards showcased at the festival’s seminars and private events, including Antinori, Caymus Vineyards, Château Cos d’Estournel, Silver Oak and Piper Heidsieck. You also can meet representatives from more than 100 wineries and purchase a signed bottle at the Bottle Signing location.
Complimentary wine seminars are scheduled daily, and you can explore more than 25 international marketplaces around World Showcase where ethnic cuisine and wine-pairing tastes range from just $2-$5. (Marketplace wines are available by the bottle at Inspired Vines). There are also some great ways to try new levels of tasting experiences: at one of the daily Food and Wine Pairings, or at a weekly Party for the Senses grand tasting.

Thank you, Peter. And thank you all. It’s great to be with you today.
As you just heard, there’s clearly a growing trend towards "celebration vacations." More and more often, people are traveling to celebrate the milestones in their lives: birthdays ... honeymoons ... graduations ... anniversaries ... and many more.
We had already noticed this trend at our parks and resorts, but, as Peter pointed out from his research, seven out of every ten leisure travelers say that they’ve taken a vacation for the specific purpose of celebrating a special occasion.
This research further revealed that, when families take a "celebration vacation," they’re seeking destinations that provide something for everyone in the family ... including activities for children and, most importantly, activities for adults and children to enjoy together.
We were pleased - but not surprised - that, in Peter’s research, Disney Parks came out as the destination which families were most likely to visit for a celebration vacation. That’s because the whole idea of families enjoying experiences together speaks to the very essence of who and what we are.
Walt Disney originally conceived Disneyland as a place where families "could have fun together."
Over the years, we’ve taken Walt’s mission and grown it.

NEW YORK - Everyone who visits a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park on their birthday in 2009 can get in free, as Disney Parks embraces a newly identified family travel trend called "celebration vacations."
In this new national trend, American families are hitting the road to mark life’s special occasions - birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more - with a "celebration vacation." In 2009, Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts will lead this growing trend with new entertainment and services that allow guests to turn their personal milestones into magical Disney experiences.
And to kick it all off - a first-ever opportunity for guests to receive a free ticket to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009.
"Birthdays are the one occasion that we all share every year," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, at an announcement event today in New York. "We thought a free birthday ticket would be the icing on the cake as we extend this new ‘celebration vacation’ trend to Disney Parks."
Disney parks provide the perfect setting for this new style of vacation that celebrates the special occasions in life, Rasulo added.
Whether a guest is celebrating a birthday, an anniversary, Quinceañera or any special occasion, Disney parks already are filled with favorite characters, world-class attractions and entertainment, and legendary guest service - exactly the "something for everyone" that trend-watchers say families look for in a "celebration vacation."
"The special moments in your life become truly magical when you celebrate at a Disney park," Rasulo said. "Sharing a milestone at Disney connects families, friends and generations."
Nationwide Survey Reveals ‘Celebration Vacation’ Trend
A nationwide survey of nearly 4,600 adults conducted by Ypartnership - co-author of the influential National Travel Monitor - showed that 70 percent of U.S. leisure travelers have taken a vacation with the primary purpose of marking a special occasion in their lives - a "celebration vacation," as Ypartnership President and CEO Peter Yesawich termed it.
Respondents mentioned a broad range of events worth celebrating with a special vacation - not just birthdays and anniversaries but a first vacation with children, a job promotion or recovery from an illness.
Whenever something positive happens in their lives, people seek out ways to make them more special, Yesawich said, and vacations are clearly perceived as both an appropriate and desirable way to do so.
Time does pass quickly and there is a growing trend to slow down our frenetic lifestyles and stop to rejoice around the things that matter," he said. "Families on ‘celebration vacations’ are looking to truly commemorate moments in their lives - in special places everyone can enjoy."
Research showed that when they take that "celebration vacation," families are looking for destinations that provide activities for children and - better yet - activities adults and children can enjoy together.
Given these findings, it’s not surprising that Disney Parks topped the list of destinations where families would most like to celebrate these special occasions," Yesawich said.
Turning Life’s Special Moments Into a Personal Disney Celebration
"We see our parks as the ideal setting for a personal celebration," Rasulo said. "Guests can immerse themselves in their favorite stories and their favorite characters, creating a visit they’ll never forget.
"And when our cast members get involved, it feels as if the entire park is celebrating along with you."
At Walt Disney World Resort, guests can add on to the fun, choosing from more than 200 experiences ranging from breathtaking (magical fireworks cruises, sunrise safaris, diving the depths with undersea creatures) to mirth-making (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, character dining, kids’ pirate adventures). At Disneyland Resort, celebrants can book more than 50 magical experiences, including "My Disneyland Birthday Party" and unique Disneyland guided tours.

"But Walt Disney World and Disneyland are now poised to champion milestone vacations for families and friends in a breakthrough way," he said. "We’re asking our guests, ‘What will YOU celebrate?’
"Part of the celebration is all the firsts that magically happen at Disney Parks," Rasulo said. "Guests become the star of their own celebration. It could be a first trip to Disney or a first family vacation without the stroller. We want to make a first visit - and every visit - even more memorable."
Even if they’re not celebrating, Rasulo said, guests will be immersed in a "Celebrate Today!" spirit, making every day a party.

As Disney Parks prepares to ask guests "What Will You Celebrate?," Moms panelists were asked how they would celebrate a special occasion at America’s favorite vacation destination. My ideal plan would be to schedule a lunch at the Coral Reef [Epcot] and prearrange for a DiveQuest diver to swim by our table with a sign reading ‘Happy Anniversary, Honey.’ Since the Coral Reef lets you create a custom menu for your celebration, I would also have our wedding picture and vows featured - my wife would be so surprised."
Bret on celebrating his son’s birthday at the Parks:
"We let him choose which park he wanted to visit... he picked the Animal Kingdom. I had special T-shirts made up for all of us; his shirt said it was his birthday and featured Animal Kingdom designs. We also picked up a birthday button from Guest Services, which often gets you special recognition from cast members that day."
Erin Foster, Scarsdale, N.Y., married and mother of three:
"My husband and I want to do something really special when our daughter graduates from eighth grade - we would love to take her to Walt Disney World with her best friends and her sisters. Knowing my girls, a day of pampering at a Disney spa would be the perfect prelude to a night out in Epcot, where they could sample a special dessert in each country. It would be really fun to have a PhotoPass photographer accompany us around the park and take pictures of our family and friends enjoying the day."

DETAILS: Disney Parks brings the "What Will You Celebrate?" message in a magical and interactive way to 30 cities this fall and winter. Colorful vehicles - a party on wheels - roll out the fun from town squares to Times Square, featuring thousands of free Mickey Mouse balloons, a chance to win a "celebration vacation" to a Disney park and the opportunity to register for a special birthday celebration surprise at Registration Stations powered by HP. Disney characters and ambassadors also go on-air with fun celebration moments.

Fun Around the Table a Delicious Part of ‘Celebration Vacations’ at Disney Parks
At dining tables around the world, life is shared over a meal, a joyful part of any celebration with friends and family. And more than ever before, American families are hitting the road to mark birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, reunions and more with "celebration vacations."
In 2009, Disney Parks isembracing this growing trend with a parks-wide party with the theme "What Will You Celebrate?" that includes free admission to a Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort theme park for everyone who visits on their birthday.
As so many festivities take place around a table, culinary treats are a delicious part of the celebration. From your own birthday cake to appealing sweets to sip, here’s a sumptuous sampling of food and beverage options that can be purchased to put the "extra special" in special occasions:
Happy Birthday
For an impromptu party, guests can order the Magical Pop-Up Party Pack, goodie bags filled with fun activity sets and a surprise pop-up centerpiece. Character dining and buffet locations at Walt Disney World Resort offer the treat; at Disneyland Resort, they are available at full-service restaurants, character dining restaurants and through room service.
A magical way to enjoy your big day is "My Disneyland Birthday Party" at the Plaza Inn on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland Park. Featuring guest appearances by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, the daily celebration is hosted by Pat E. Cake, a wacky character who has everyone singing and dancing. There are plenty of sweet treats to decorate your own "mouse-terpiece" mini-cake, along with a souvenir party hat and cup. Park admission is required plus cost per person for the party.
Sweets to the Sweet
Make any occasion special with A Sweet Ending to Your Celebration dessert, from indulgent to delicious low-fat and no-sugar-added treats. Available at most Walt Disney World table-service restaurants and all Disneyland table-service restaurants.
My Mini-Cake Surprise includes your own mini celebration cake with a special treat, packaged one of three ways: in a Sorcerer Mickey Celebration Bucket (Disneyland Resort only), Disney Princess Jewelry Box or Disney Pirate Treasure Chest. Available at Walt Disney World character dining and buffet locations; at Disneyland Resort in full-service restaurants, character dining and through room service.
Guests who prefer a Disney Custom Bakery Cake can order at least 48 hours in advance of their celebration. Choices include a custom cake (6-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch and quarter sheet), an 8-inch Mickey Mouse cake or a themed cake with enhanced inscription and edible decorations (8-inch,
10-inch and quarter sheet), available at most Walt Disney World table-service restaurants and all table-service restaurants at Disneyland Resort. To order at Walt Disney World Resort, call the cake ordering hotline at 407/827-2253.
At Walt Disney World Resort, create an instant party with the Celebrate Today! Cake, a 6-inch vanilla cake with vanilla icing and fun confetti sprinkles. No notice necessary, just order at the podium in most of the table-service restaurants.
Sweetheart Dinner for Two
For romantics, Disney’s three-course, prix fixe Sweetheart Dinner for Two is the perfect way to create a memorable evening, ending with a shared dessert. Includes a specially selected beverage in a souvenir toasting glass to commemorate a special moment. Dinners available at all Walt Disney World signature restaurants except Victoria & Albert’s; available at Disneyland Resort at Napa Rose, Steakhouse 55, Yamabuki and Blue Bayou.
Guests who prefer an in-room romantic dinner can check with their Disney resort hotel’s front desk.
Fun for Any Reason
At Disneyland Resort, the festive "Celebration Roundup and Barbecue at Big Thunder Ranch" features family-style service with barbecue chicken and ribs with all the fix’ns. The party includes live "frontier" entertainment and goodie bags, plus a special treat for everyone.

‘CELEBRATION VACATION’ TREND: A national study by a leading travel research firm - Ypartnership - reveals a widespread new trend. o 7 out of 10 revealed they have taken a vacation primarily to celebrate a special occasion.
o Most people taking "celebration vacations" are looking for: a variety of activities for everyone, kids’ activities and activities that adults and children can experience together.
o Disney parks topped the survey of destinations for a family "celebration vacation."
BIRTHDAY FUN FOR FREE: Crowning the celebration is a Disney Parks first: Guests can receive free admission to one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009. All it takes is a valid ID including proof of birth date. (Guests who already hold a multi-day ticket or an annual pass that they will use on their birthday can choose an alternate birthday treat instead, but will not be entitled to a cash refund or credit.) HOW DO I CELEBRATE?
