Beth, our travel agent, writes about an interesting money saving strategy involving rental cars:

"The state of Florida needs a LOT of rental cars in the winter. Conversely, places up north that have little need all winter long need them badly in the summer. Thus the birth of the one-way car rental bargain. This time of year you can fly one way to Florida, have your vacation, then pick up a rental car and drive home. Not only can this extend your vacation a bit if you want it to, but also cut costs (as long as you're reasonable about your dining and accommodations on the way home).

For instance, four roundtrip plan tickets between Baltimore and Orlando would (as of this writing) cost you $636.80. Of course, at $69 + tax each way, this is an awesome deal. But what if you only purchased the tickets one way? That drops the cost to $318.40. On your final day, let's say that instead of flying home you go to the airport and pick up a rental car... a compact (not the smallest) for 72 hours (so you don't have to rush home). That's $105.61, for a total of $424 plus gas in roundtrip travel costs - and whatever you spend along the way. If you can drive straight through you can get the car for as little as $26.40 a day INCLUDING all taxes and fees!

Now, if you're a real road warrior and don't mind a drive, consider that taking the car back to Buffalo or even Minneapolis is that same $26.40 a day. And the rates for larger vehicles, while a little higher, are similarly discounted. Keep in mind I priced only one rental company located inside the MCO airport. I didn't even look at prices for the ones located off site (traditionally less expensive). I should also mention that you can get pricing like this all over the state, so if you're skipping Disney this year, but still want a vacation, let me know. Maybe we can get you a nice deal on the beach somewhere with a fly/drive offer.

Coming later in the year? The same phenomenon occurs in the opposite direction in late Fall/early winter as they try to get the necessary cars back into the state. So if you don't mind the drive, or can actually work it into your plans (Williamsburg for a day anyone?) give it some thought."

Summer 2009 at Walt Disney World Resort -- The Season is the Reason to Celebrate, and Here are Some Ways: New Attraction to Idol-ize, Hail to the (New) Chief, What’s ‘Up’ at Downtown Disney, New Resort Experiences

From May through August 2009, summer simmers with exciting new attractions and experiences at Walt Disney World Resort. The smash TV hit "American Idol" inspires a new attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios while, at Magic Kingdom, a Liberty Square icon reopens its doors and street parties turn up the spirit as Disney’s "What Will You Celebrate?" hits full-stride. Treehouse lodging is back, Stars Wars Weekends let guests release their inner Jedi, Downtown Disney unwraps new fun – on the ground and in the air – and there’s music, music, music filling the air at Epcot …

Summer fun at "The American Idol Experience"
This marks the first summer of fun for "The American Idol Experience," which puts Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests in the spotlight, immersing them in the thrill of auditioning and performing or voting on their favorite musical performances.
Modeled after the famous "American Idol" television show, the newly opened Walt Disney World attraction makes dreams come true by showcasing the talents of park guests age 14 and older who have aced the auditions (audition slots are limited and interested guests are encouraged to arrive early or register online at www.disneyworld.com/idol).

Like the television show, fans – not the onstage judges – have the final say on who is deemed the best of the best. With seating to accommodate 1,000 audience members, the high-tech theater is wired so guests can vote for their favorite singer. There are several show times daily.

"What Will You Celebrate?" adds park fun, gifting option
As "What Will You Celebrate?" invites Disney Parks guests to turn personal milestones into magical Disney experiences, the ways for guests to customize and personalize a visit are seemingly endless – and growing! With everything from fireworks cruises, street parties and behind-the-scenes tours to specialty cakes and in-room decorations to choose from, guests have more choices as they ponder, "How will I celebrate?"

With all there is to do in Disney parks, guests can tailor a celebration with favorite attractions, favorite characters and special experiences. Thanks to new Web planning tools, learning about available choices and then customizing a "celebration vacation" itinerary is easier than ever. Through www.disneyparks.com, guests (or their travel agents) choose the celebration destination – Disneyland Resort in California or Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. With a click, they access an interactive online celebration "planner" to shop the many experiences that are a cornerstone of a "celebration vacation" at Disney parks – experiences that transform guests into the stars of their own party whether the occasion is a birthday, anniversary, Quinceañera, personal triumph or any celebration.

The icing on the cake of "What Will You Celebrate?": guests visiting one of the Walt Disney World or Disneyland theme parks on their birthday in 2009 get in free. More than two million people have already registered their birthday on the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Web sites. Already, the parks have welcomed birthday celebrants from quadruplets turning 4 to a milestone birthday of 107.

There is even a way to participate in a guest’s upcoming celebration visit when you can’t be there: by "gifting." The giver reviews the possibilities using the online planner, then calls a Disney Dream Maker to personalize and customize the gift. At Walt Disney World Resort, Dream Makers can be reached at 407/WDW-GIFT.

The fun is nonstop, too, with a party spirit stamping new shows in Magic Kingdom:

Everybody’s favorite galactic pal – the "Guru of Gross-Out," "the Maker of Mischief" – now stars in "Stitch’s SuperSonic Celebration," a live stage spectacle (grand opening May 6) in Tomorrowland that celebrates everything worth celebrating around the universe in honor of "Galaxy Day." This interactive, retro-futuristic musical revue features an animated version of Stitch interacting live with Magic Kingdom guests. The show also stars Tip Trendo, "celebritainer" party host extraordinaire, the Galactic Girls, Tip’s deep space diva back-up dancers, a pair of hip-hop robots run amuck, all underscored by a space-pop soundtrack that will rock the cosmos! Several show times daily.

Floats, a cast of Disney characters, stilt walkers and more "move it" down Main Street, U.S.A. accompanied by high-energy tunes and an open invitation to guests to come join the fun during performances of "Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It!" street party. Near Cinderella Castle, Mad Hatter, Genie, Lumiere and Sebastian – the life and light of the party – pop out of four huge boxes that dominate the floats. They join about a dozen other Disney characters headed by Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse to mix and mingle and dance in the street with Magic Kingdom guests during a 12- to 15-minute party that takes place three times daily.

New music, new costumes and changes to some of the floats are part of the afternoon Magic Kingdom parade, "Celebrate a Dream Come True." The procession through the park is an update to the former "Disney Dreams Come True" parade with more pauses – during which party dancers perform to get guests into a celebratory spirit – and with a grand marshal in the lead role of the procession.

The new theme park fun continues at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Epcot:

Khaki-clad cast – including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy – gather near Disney’s Animal Kingdom entrance each evening during park closing to bid farewell to guests with the music-filled Adventurers’ Celebration Gathering. Cast members shake their pom-poms and urge guests to join in the street-party fun by dancing to the music and forming a conga line procession while the Disney characters keep the beat from atop their safari vehicle.

Inspired by Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning "Kim Possible" animated series, Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventureinvites Epcot guests of all ages to take on the role of secret agents to save the world from various comical villains and their mad inventions. This ultra-interactive, high-tech adventure packed with mystery and excitement is offered in seven World Showcase pavilions.

‘Star Wars’ Weekends returns to Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Once again, the power of the Force and the magic of Disney combine in May and June 2009 for Star Wars Weekends, a sci-fi fan-fest inspired by the popular film saga.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 22-June 14, Disney’s Hollywood Studios becomes the temporary home for a band of out-of-this-world characters, including Wookiees, Sith, droids, Jedi, Ewoks, bounty hunters and Rodians. Dates are May 22-24, May 29-31, June 5-7 and June 12-14.

A giant, "A to Z" gathering of Star Wars characters – from Anakin Skywalker to Zam Wesell – roams the streets of the theme park during meet-and-greet sessions. Jedi Training Academy – one of the interactive entertainment experiences featured in the theme park – takes place throughout the day on the event’s main stage and allows young guests to learn from a Jedi Master before testing newly acquired skills in a battle with Darth Vader.
Also featured: the chance to purchase one-of-a-kind Star Wars memorabilia, Star Wars trivia contests, special Star Wars parades, rides on the famed Star Tours attraction, and autograph sessions and star conversations with famous Star Wars actors and creative geniuses.

Event activities are included in theme park admission. For more information, guests may go online to www.starwars.com or www.disneyworld.com/starwarsweekends.

Music is in the air at Epcot
Legendary music fills the air at Epcot during the summer of 2009 as the park hosts Flower Power concerts and Sounds Like Summer concerts at America Gardens Theatre.

From Chubby Checker & The Wildcats to Tony Orlando, a lineup of music hit-makers from the 1960s and 1970s will strike nostalgic notes each weekend in May during Flower Power concerts that are part of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival through May 31. The lineup also includes The Nelsons, Jose Feliciano and The 5th Dimension. Guest information is available at www.disneyworld.com/flower (click on "Concerts") or by calling 407/824-4321.

The whole family will be rockin’ and rollin’ when tribute bands recreate classic hits from musical icons under the stars as part of the Sounds Like Summer concert series daily June 15-Aug. 9. During the series, seven popular tribute bands will celebrate the music of the Bee Gees, Eagles, Bon Jovi, ABBA, the Supremes, U2 and Tom Petty. Concerts are included in regular Epcot admission. For more information, visit Disneyworld.com or call 407/824-4321.

The Pirates League sets sail in Magic Kingdom June 29
Calling all scoundrels, rogues and ne’er-do-wells – Captain Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl want YOU. Starting in late June, the Pearl drops anchor in Adventureland for The Pirates League, recruiting and training park guests of all ages in the scurrilous ways of buccaneers. Each guest checking in at the plunder-filled recruitment office gets an official pirate name. Next step is the Muster Station where – after applications of beards and eye patches, scarves and scars, earrings and gold teeth – the new recruits leave their old identities behind. Past a hidden portal and into the treasure cache, the new shipmates speak the pirate oath and have their official "pirate portrait" taken before being turned loose on an unsuspecting Adventureland – and no doubt feeling right at home at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction. Boys, girls and grownups ready for the pirate life start the process by calling 407/WDW-CREW beginning May 11. Packages start at $49.95 plus tax.

Hall of Presidents to reopen in July; fireworks paint the skies July 4
A July reopening is planned for the Hall of Presidents, an iconic attraction in Magic Kingdom. An Audio-Animatronics version of President Barack Obama will join representations of the previous 43 presidents of the United States as part of an attraction that has been celebrating American history since Walt Disney World Resort opened in 1971. Disney Imagineers also are updating a broad array of show elements.

The star-spangled fun doesn’t stop there…

July Fourth is a grand celebration of all things America. What better patriotic place to be than Walt Disney World Resort as freedom rings from corner to corner of the Vacation Kingdom. "Disney’s Celebrate America!-A Fourth of July Concert in the Sky" will dazzle Magic Kingdom guests at 9 p.m. on the Fourth of July. That same park will feature a performance of the "SpectroMagic" nighttime parade, at 10:30 p.m. In the meantime, Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests are treated to a 9 p.m. performance of "Fantasmic!" while at Epcot, a holiday-inspired "IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth" bursts above World Showcase Lagoon at 10 p.m.

‘Picnic in the Park’ comes to Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Summer guests to Disney’s Animal Kingdom have a new casual option to restaurant mealtimes – "Picnic in the Park" for al fresco dining. The to-go meal includes either sandwiches or rotisserie chicken or ham. Meals include sides, desserts and bottled water for each guest. Prices range from $24.99 for a meal for three to $56.99 for a meal for six. Meals can be booked at the podium near the park entrance or, after 1 p.m., picnics can be ordered at Tusker House Restaurant. Picnics are ready for pick-up within two hours at the Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery in the park.

New and aloft at Downtown Disney: Characters in Flight
Ever imagined lofty, Tinker Bell views of Walt Disney World Resort and beyond? That dream is now possible. Downtown Disney treats guests to breathtaking, 360-degree panoramas with a new iconic attraction, Characters in Flight operated by Aerophile. The tethered gas balloon takes guests 400 feet into the air from the waterfront of Downtown Disney West Side near Pleasure Island. The 72-foot-diameter balloon can accommodate up to 30 guests at a time on a six-minute "flight" by day or night, weather permitting.

Characters in Flight made a spring debut, joining other newcomers at Downtown Disney for summer:

Tren-D – a hip new Downtown Disney Marketplace boutique with urban-inspired fashions.

Disney Design-a-Tee – presented by Hanes, inviting Marketplace guests to personalize the popular T-shirt souvenir to their own tastes.

T-Rex : A Prehistoric Family Adventure, A Place to Eat, Shop, Explore and Discover – a fun prehistoric environment millions of years in the making.

Paradiso 37, a Downtown Disney restaurant from E-Brands to feature a selection of menu offerings representing the 37 countries of the Americas.

On the RISE: New ESPN event at sports complex
The inaugural ESPN RISE Games presented by Target will take place July 19-25, 2009, at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. The week-long event will be anchored by three invitation-only, elite high school sporting events: the AAU 17-under Boys Basketball Super Showcase, the Under Armour High School Softball All-American game, and a new high school football event – Champion Gridiron Kings – a 7-on-7 competition featuring skill position players. The event will also feature competitive youth sports – baseball (10U, 11U and 12U), basketball (10U, 12U and 14U), field hockey (14U, U16 and 19U) and track & field (14-18).

The ESPN RISE Games is expected to welcome 4,000 student athletes. Team enrollment for the event’s open basketball, baseball, field hockey and track & field programs is available. Additional information on the ESPN RISE Games presented by Target is available at www.espnrisegames.com.

Whole new world of lodging greets summer guests
New home-like accommodations presented by Disney Vacation Club are scheduled to debut in time for summer guests. New options will combine to revive "treehouse living" at Walt Disney World Resort, immerse guests in the African experience and offer up breathtaking views of Bay Lake and Cinderella Castle.
Treehouse Villas at Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa – Treehouse living, a cherished Walt Disney World tradition from 1975-2002, returns with the scheduled opening of 60 three-bedroom villas elevated 10 feet off the ground on pedestals and beams. Designed to blend into the forest glens where they are nestled, these vacation villas will sleep up to nine and provide Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa with a new room category.

Kidani Village at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge – Following the successful conversion of select rooms at Jambo House (at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge) into vacation villas in 2007, Kidani Village is taking shape (for phased openings scheduled in the spring and fall) with thatched roofs and a hewn timber design. Kidani means "necklace" in Swahili and the new building is shaped like a piece of native African jewelry with villas forming the beads, walkways creating the knots in between and the lobby representing the ornament or jewel at its center. With the planned spring opening also comes Sanaa, a new family dining location, featuring savannah views at select tables and serving familiar foods from tandoor ovens in addition to slow-cooked specialties with the flavorful spices of Africa and India.

Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort – Scheduled to open late summer, Bay Lake Tower nestles beside Disney’s Contemporary Resort and will serve up a variety of views including grand vistas of lakes and land, such as Magic Kingdom, from its 295 two-bedroom equivalent villas. Planned amenities include a community hall, pool bar, in-room dining, tennis courts, a pool and a water play area.

Disney Vacation Club accommodations can be booked by anyone for overnight stays through www.disneyworld.com or by calling 407/W-DISNEY (934-7639).

Walt Disney World Resort debuts online check-in service
In time for summer, Walt Disney World Resort has launched Online Check-In Service, designed to simplify and streamline guest arrivals. The new service is complimentary and available to guests staying at select Walt Disney World Resort hotels and Disney Vacation Club resorts.

Within 10 days of their arrival dates, guests are able to provide check-in information, advise the resort of their arrival times and request room preferences (although those cannot be guaranteed). Guests can also register the names of all the people in their party and provide a credit card to cover charges at the resort hotel.

Upon arrival at their resorts, guests visit a special welcome location where their room keys and other registration material are waiting. Disney cast members are also available to provide additional information and answer questions.

Meeting professionals can also arrange private group check-in at a Disney resort convention center or other locations.

For more information about the new Online Check-In Service or to make a resort reservation, call
407/W-DISNEY or your local travel agent or click on disneyworld.com.

Lighting Up The Night With New Shows And A New Glow! Disneyland Resort Celebrates Summer Nightastic!

Disneyland Resort will glow like never before this summer as it debuts an all-new fireworks show, Magical, along with sensational new characters and effects that will brighten the Summer Nightastic! lineup of after-dark entertainment.

WHAT: Guests can see Disneyland Resort in a whole new light as Summer Nightastic! brings nighttime shows and parades to life – bigger, better and brighter. A huge new dragon and other special effects will highlight Fantasmic! Explosive surprises will illuminate the night sky in the all-new fireworks spectacular, Magical. Guests can rock the night away at a new dance club in Tomorrowland. Sparkling new magic comes to "Disney’s Electrical Parade," as well as to Pixie Hollow, the enchanting home Tinker Bell inhabits with her fairy friends.

WHEN: Nightly, beginning Friday, June 12, and continuing through Sunday, August 23, at Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks. All shows and immersive experiences are free with park admission.

A BOLDER FANTASMIC!: Guests will find new thrills at the popular Fantasmic! on the Rivers of America in Frontierland. The evil Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" transforms into a 40-foot tall, fire-breathing dragon. Ursula the Sea Witch from "The Little Mermaid" introduces her pet eels, Flotsam and Jetsam, who slither into the show with new power. In addition, the Fantasmic! video projections practically leap off the giant mist screens, thanks to HD (high-definition) technology ... (in this case, HD takes on a new meaning - Huge Dragon).

AN EXPLODING CELEBRATION IN THE SKY: Magical is a new Disney fireworks spectacular created especially to celebrate Summer Nightastic! at Disneyland. Tinker Bell is once again your host, waving her wand to ignite the brilliant color, stunning special effects and charming music. But she won’t be alone in the sky this summer. Dumbo will make his surprise airborne debut in the new show. Tink’s sparkling touch awakens a fantastic array of Disney’s most magical characters, from Pinocchio to Mary Poppins to Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother, and the Three Good Fairies from "Sleeping Beauty."

NEW FLOATS BRING NEW MAGIC TO ‘DISNEY’S ELECTRICAL PARADE’: Everything about "Disney’s Electrical Parade" will have a new glow as Tinker Bell leads the way, waving from the basket of a magical balloon aboard a new opening parade float. The parade’s beloved music and floats will feature electrifying audio and lighting technologies, with sparkling pixie dust added to all the parade floats. Snow White and Pinocchio return to the parade this summer as well, after several years’ absence, riding bright new versions of their classic floats.

AN EXCITING NEW DANCE CLUB ‘IGNITES THE NIGHT’ IN TOMORROWLAND: Tweens, teens and families will be drawn to the TLT Dance Club at Tomorrowland Terrace in Disneyland. Dazzling décor will include an illuminated DJ console where the TLT Dance Club DJ will spin the hottest dance tunes, guaranteed to keep Tomorrowland rockin’ all night. Live bands and the hottest Southern California radio stations will appear on select nights throughout the summer.

PIXIE HOLLOW ENCHANTMENT: Tinker Bell and her friends have been welcoming guests into their Pixie Hollow home, tucked into the glen near the entrance to Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, since fall of 2008. This summer, for the first time, nighttime visitors will find magical surprises as Pixie Hollow and the nearby pond come to life in iridescent light shows. Pixie dust cascades across the landscape and radiates down into the pond. Even the water becomes enchanted as playful fountains spring to life, pop jets perform with whimsical precision, and sparkling strobes shine throughout Pixie Hollow.

More information about Summer Nightastic! can be found at www.disneyland.com/summer. (Source: Press Release, 04/24/09)

You CAN afford a vacation this year!

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"I'm a "glass half full" kind of girl... I am, and always have been, of the opinion that where there's a will, there's a way. If you want a vacation this summer, you can make it happen even if the economy has been less than kind to you. Sure, it might involve a little compromising, creativity and extra effort - but as you lounge by a pool sipping a frozen drink with an umbrella in it you'll probably come to feel it was all well worth it.

Building a vacation on a tight budget is, to a large degree, the same as doing it when your bank account is, shall we say, healthier - but with a few extra steps.

* Start by gathering the family together to brainstorm about all the things that might be fun. Remember, when brainstorming, nothing is too 'left field' to be considered.
* Discuss the list and narrow it down to 2-3 options that are most appealing to everyone.
* Decide when you can take the trip and how long you'd like to go for.
* Decide how much you can afford to spend without causing real problems. Be realistic. If you've only got $300 then that's what you've got.
* Get an idea of what it would normally cost to accomplish those 2-3 vacations you came up with earlier. Just ballpark it... a quick estimation of transportation, lodging, meals, and entertainment.
* See if you're anywhere close... Compare the budget to your estimates on your favorite vacation options. If you're within $500 then you can probably pull it off with minimal extra effort. If you're within $1000 then it can probably be done... but that's where compromise will come in. If you're significantly further off, then don't discount the option entirely. Maybe your estimates aren't accurate, maybe there are some phenomenal steals out there you're unaware of, or maybe you can do it if you approach it from an entirely different angle.

How can you close the gap? Hit the problem from both sides: find ways to increase your budget, and ways to lower the costs.

To increase your budget you'll need to get more money by both saving elsewhere and bringing in more. Try taking 15-20% a week off your food budget and putting that money into your vacation find instead. That means downgrading your cuts of meat, buying store brands instead of brand names, and planning your meals around what's on sale. Get the family chefs together to find other ways to work within the new and improved food budget... For instance, let each person create a meal from online recipes for under $2.50 a serving. Agree to give up eating out for the next few months and put that money into the fund. Get a credit card that gives vacation benefits that are available right away, and then use that card to charge all the things that you normally pay off monthly (like the mortgage, utilities, gasoline, etc.) WARNING: Be sure you CONTINUE to pay the card in full each month!

As for bringing in more money, find things to sell on eBay and through Craig's List. You can't believe how simple it is! Two weeks ago I listed my daughter's glider and ottoman on Craig's list with a few pictures. It took me about 15 minutes to figure it all out. An hour or so later I got a phone call from a woman in a nearby town. She came with her hubby the next morning and paid me $250 in cash! I have a friend that sells old clothing from their closets on eBay. For instance, she'll sell a collection of men's shirts (some with small holes even!) for a flat rate. She clears out the closets and makes money at the same time! This is another great opportunity for family input if your kids are older. Involve them in coming up with ideas for making money.

On the flip side, you need to lower your costs. You may be assuming that driving is going to be cheaper, but there are some amazing airfares to be had these days. Of course, if you're going to need a car on the other end, the cost of renting may eat up your savings, but don't discount the possibility. And what about your lodging? Sure, it's great to stay in 4- and 5-star resorts, but they aren't a requirement. What about a timeshare? I can get you incredible prices on condos that haven't been booked by owners. Or how about camping? Did you know that Disney World has camp sites from just $43 a night - less if you can get the space on sale? You can add a dining plan, but you can also try doing some cooking out.

And if you really do only have $300 in your budget, don't give up! One of the most fun weekends I've had in a long time was at a beach condo about an hour away from here. The entire area was totally new to us, so it was as if we'd gone far, far away. The whole weekend, including meals and entertainment, ran two adults and a child about $250.

My point is that you shouldn't discount the possibility getting away this year. Taking a break from the stresses of your everyday life is important for both your mental and physical health, and it can work wonders for the relationship you have with your spouse and your children. If you're totally stumped, tell me your story and I'll see what I can come up with. You deserve a vacation this year; MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Alaska cruises from $399 p/p for 7 nights

OK, that one's in May and there'd be airfare involved for most people, plus some taxes - and as you might guess, we're not talking about a suite. It might not be the ideal way to do an Alaskan cruise, but I can pretty much guarantee it would be a fun and really memorable trip, and that price is probably a fraction of what you were thinking it would be. This same cruise line (one of my favorites, by the way) offers the same 7-night itinerary in June for only $50 more.

Got a little Irish in you?

A great tour company is offering some amazing deals if you book by the end of May. For instance, Ireland on a Budget includes 6 nights in B&Bs, daily breakfast and a rental car from $449 - with the option to upgrade to castle one night if you want. Escorted tours start at $599, and golf vacations start at $899. You do have to add air, but depending on where you're flying from it can be amazingly affordable.

Cruises with cash back

A major cruise line is giving onboard credits of up to $240 per cabin to spend as you please - and if you don't spend it all, you get cash back! This applies to nearly all cruises this summer, but is for new bookings only and cannot be combined with other discounts and promotions. (Affordable Disney members should log in to learn more about these deals.)

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Serves Up Celebration Gathering
As ‘Goodnight Kiss’ for Guests at Park Closing Time

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Disney’s Animal Kingdom guests get so involved in adventures with birds and beasts of many kinds that they tend to put off one of their priorities all day long: a little quality time with Disney characters.

"So when guests come out of the park, they are absolutely determined to see our characters," said Chris Ambrose, general manager of entertainment at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

In a classic example of giving guests what they want, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has launched Adventurers’ Celebration Gathering, an interactive experience near the theme park entrance each evening during park closing.

Khaki-clad cast - including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Goofy - gather to bid farewell to guests with a music-filled celebration. Cast members shake their pom-poms and urge guests to join in the street-party fun by dancing to the music and forming a conga line procession while Mickey, Minnie and Goofy keep the beat from atop their safari vehicle.

"We’ve created a way for our guests to experience our characters ..… and it’s a way for us to have a fun, exciting way to end the day at Animal Kingdom," Ambrose said. (Source: Press Release, 04/15/09)

Beth, our travel agent, writes about how to play the Disney game and new spring discounts coming:

"'So, what's up with that 5-night minimum this year on the Free Dining offer?" I've gotten that question about ten times now so I thought I'd investigate. It turns out that this is like so many other Disney advertisements.... They WANT you to stay at least five nights, but (at least at this point) three nights is all that's truly required. If I try to book someone via the agent website I have to initially ask for five or more nights, but then I can modify the results. That's also true for people that want to stay beyond October 3. If I ask for a longer stay outright the request is rejected, but I can ask for something else and then modify the results to what I really want. Yet another example of learning how to play the Disney Game.

Here's some happy news... I learned today that there will be another round of SPRING discounts out this week. I didn't get details, but if I had to guess I'd say they will come out Wednesday or Thursday. Sorry - wish I had more to say, but that's it so far. If you're still pondering a trip in May or even June, let me know as soon as possible. I think the space will fill fast." Members should log in for Beth's contact info.

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

CELEBRITY'S SOLSTICE

"The weekend of March 21 I had the opportunity to tour Celebrity's newest ship, Solstice. Now, understand that I'm a real fan of Princess Cruises, so I look at the competition with a very critical eye. We boarded in Ft. Lauderdale, right next to where the port is constructing new areas for Royal Caribbean's mammoth Oasis of the Seas (due out in December). It's dusty and noisy outside - and pure warehouse inside. I can't be too hard on them about the unappealing check-in area, though, because it looks just like what Princess has there. I will say that the lines to check in were pretty much non-existent. The boarding ramp was at such a steep incline that someone in a wheelchair or using a walker - or with any mobility challenges at all - would have a hard time. Once onboard, though, the atmosphere was much different.

The ship, which arrived here in November of last year, has some very interesting public spaces. My ship decor taste leans toward dark woods, crystal, brass, and rich jewel tones. There are a few areas that use that theme, but then they also have funky sculptures and/or very contemporary lighting. Most public areas lean towards what I call South Beach chic: cool tones of icy aqua and mint green, LOTS of white, heavy on the chrome and glass, and yards and yards of sheer and/or gauzy window treatment. It's not that it's not attractive; it's just not my cup of tea. Think 'elegant spa resort at sea' - which is fitting. Read on.

Speaking of tea, the pastries on display at a few of the alternative dining locations looked heavenly. (Celebrity has a reputation for having the best pastries at sea.) There are a number of alternative dining locations (additional fees from $5 up apply for most) if you're not in the mood for the formal dining room each night, and the buffet area we all know and love is there as well. The lunch we were served was quite good, and the service was great. I suspect the main dining room is probably very noisy during meal times, but the decor is unique and - again - tres chic. I'd love to try the alternative restaurant Silk Harvest that offers Chinese/Japanese/Thai fusion cuisine, as well as Bistro on Five which serves, among other things, crepes that smell amazing.

The ship is best known for being the first to have real grass. I know what you're thinking... and I think the same thing. Why???? No one can give me a good answer. I can tell you, though, that there's a good bit of deck space dedicated to this green area, and they're now on their third type of grass. (The first two couldn't handle the intense sun and the saltiness of the sea.) If you want, you can kick off your shoes and enjoy another first at sea: glass blowers. Yes, really. Again, I'm not sure why, but there's a small theatre of sorts set up so that folks from the Corning Museum of Glass can entertain you with their glass blowing talents.

The cabins of this class of ship were designed based largely on the input of a panel of five women: a frequent cruiser, a travel writer, a travel agent, someone who'd never cruised, and a hotelier. Their ideas resulted in a larger bathroom, fog-free mirrors, space under the beds for storage, and more. The cabins are supposed to be larger than most at sea, but those I toured with all agreed that they actually feel smaller. That is, perhaps, due to the layout that some cabins have: the sitting area and then the bed (closest to the outer wall/balcony) as opposed to the other way around which somehow appears larger. The deck plans aren't that specific, so unless you know someone that knows the ship and its cabins really well, it's luck of the draw.

Another first (for Celebrity, at least) is a special class known as Aqua Class. These passengers have rooms that look like all the others, but with some extra perks (upgraded shower heads, daily bottled water, a special room service menu, and so forth). They also have access to an area of the spa known as the Relaxation Room which is really just very comfy lounges in a nice, quiet room with a lovely view. Aqua Class guests also have a spa concierge (although spa treatments cost extra) and are assigned to the super-exclusive restaurant called Blu instead of the main dining room.

Aqua Class guests may choose to dine elsewhere from time to time, space permitting, and if they do then their unoccupied seats at Blu are offered to those in suites. If you're not Aqua Class or in a suite you have zero chance of getting into Blu. It's an attractive, intimate dining room and I'm sure the food and service are excellent, but my fellow agents and I decided that you'd have to be a real spa fan to think it's worth the extra bucks for Aqua Class. For Celebrity's sake, I hope the idea goes over well because two more identical ships are on the way!

Other notes: The children's areas are not nearly as nice as what's available on the newer Princess ships (or even Carnival and Royal Caribbean, for that matter). They do have them, though, and children who don't have anything to compare to would probably be happy. The teen area seems well done and should please most. This is really more of a 'grown up' ship, though. The main theatre is nicely done. The seats are comfy and there are very few 'bad spots' in the room. One of the shows includes some aerial work, and the facility seems well suited to that sort of thing. We all loved the big hammocks in the main pool area. There just aren't nearly enough of them! There are some cushy-looking double lounges (already very spotted and in need of cleaning or replacement) that look great, but I suspect that people are up there at the crack of dawn staking out those lounge chairs for the day. I hate that!

All in all, this is a very nice ship and I'd be willing to give it a go - for the right price, of course. This ship heads to Europe on April 19, but will be back next Fall."

Anyone Up for Bird’s-Eye View of Downtown Disney Area is in for a Treat as Characters In Flight Ascends in April

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The fun soars to new heights at Downtown Disney West Side with an iconic new tethered balloon that takes guests on ascents of up to 400 feet above the waterfront.

Characters In Flight operated by Aerophile is a 72-foot-diameter balloon with a whimsical design featuring silhouettes of a dozen of Disney’s "flying characters" - such as Mary Poppins, Peter Pan and Dumbo. The vibrantly colored balloon can lift up to 30 guests at a time on a six-minute trip – thanks to its enclosed volume of 210,000 cubic feet of lighter-than-air gas. The ascents, by day or night, provide guests with an unparalleled, 360-degree view of up to 10 miles.

Guests board a gondola beneath the 105-foot-high balloon from a landing platform on Village Lake at the end of the main promenade at Downtown Disney West Side. Riders can catch flights seven days a week. Hours Sunday-Thursday are 10:30 a.m.-11 p.m. while ascents Friday-Saturday are 10:30 a.m.-midnight. Tickets ($16 for ages 10-up and $10 for ages 3-9) can be purchased on site. Availability is on first-come, first-serve basis.

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

A FREE DISNEY VACATION?

"Well, no, not really. Nothings truly free as far as I'm concerned, but you could get close. US Residents can apply for a Disney Rewards Visa card through Chase. These are cool because you earn "reward dollars" for everything you charge to the card, and they can rack up pretty fast if you're as clever as some of my clients are. For instance, one woman said she used to have her mortgage payment automatically debited from her checking account each month until she found out she could pay with a Visa card. She then changed her set-up so that the mortgage was automatically paid with her Disney Visa each month instead, and that automatic mortgage payment from her checking account went to Chase instead of the mortgage company. The result was nearly $40 a month to her "rewards" balance. She also started purchasing gas, groceries, and nearly everything else she always used her debit card for.

Then she got REAL creative... Her husband was having surgery. Nearly all of it was going to be covered by insurance, but instead of having the hospital and doctors file directly with the insurance company, she paid it all with her Disney Visa and submitted the claims to insurance herself. Those claims were mailed immediately and (amazingly) she was reimbursed for all but one of them by the time her bill came. After nearly three years of collecting her reward dollars, she finally booked her trip - and in a big way! She and her (fully recovered) hubby took their two grandchildren for a week-long stay at the Polynesian resort. She booked well in advance, got a free dining offer, and paid less than $200 out of pocket for the trip. The rest was all covered with her Disney Reward Dollars.

I have to say that this is a rather exceptional story. The interest on the card is crazy-high, so you need to pay it off 100% every month. Few people are that disciplined. Also, you'd need to charge $200,000 to earn enough do a Disney vacation. (You can do it for less, but $2,000 is about average.) Unless you're using the card for business reasons or make some seriously large purchases, it would take you quite awhile to charge that much. On the other hand, if you're charging things you were going to pay for immediately anyway, you'd might as well get a little something extra when you can... and when you finally DO get around to booking that Disney vacation, if you have to charge any of it back to your card you'll get 6 months 0% financing on all Disney vacation purchases."

Disney’s Smallest Audio-Animatronics Figure Brings ‘Chef Remy’ to Life at Les Chefs de France in Epcot

From the Silver Screen to Haute Cuisine!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The newest chef at Walt Disney World Resort may be small in stature, but he’s a big hit with guests enjoying haute cuisine at Les Chefs de France in Epcot. With his flair for French fare, diners of all ages are eating up his whimsical tableside visits.

His name is Remy, and he’s the rat-turned-chef made famous in the Academy Award-winning Disney*Pixar film "Ratatouille." A new Audio-Animatronicscharacter created by Walt Disney Imagineering, Remy stars in a new guest experience at Les Chefs de France entitled "Bon Appétit from Chef Remy." Les Chefs de France is one of the restaurants featured at the France pavilion in Epcot.

Six days a week, four times a day (subject to change), a Maître d’ greets diners with a rolling gourmet food cart. Dramatically lifting the lid from a silver-domed cheese platter, the Maître d’ reveals the guest of honor - a six-inch-tall rat with silky-soft fur, pink paws and traditional toque. Chef Remy then comes to life, entertaining diners with sprightly movements and lively banter. Winding their way through the restaurant, Remy and his Maître d’ pal make stops at each table. In addition to his hijinks, Chef Remy might even bust a move to the beat of different tunes, from the soft sway of a French love song to the hot sounds of hip-hop.

The 40-minute experience provides guests an up-close encounter with the “Ratatouille” star as he laughs, sniffles and even flirts with his new friends.

Remy is part of the Living Character initiative created for Disney Parks by Walt Disney Imagineering.

"By combining technologies, our Living Character initiative creates new levels of guest interaction and brings characters to life like never before," said Holger Irmler, who worked on the Remy project for Walt Disney Imagineering. "Things we do are so complex, yet our goal is to make them seem so magical to our guests."

Since its inception, the initiative has been providing guests with a dash of never-before-seen technology and a heaping helping of legendary Disney magic. The first Living Character debuted in 2004 in the form of a large and lovable dinosaur named Lucky.

Not only is Remy one of the newest Audio-Animatronicscharacters created by Walt Disney Imagineering, he also holds the distinction of being the smallest one ever created. Having already wowed guests at Disneyland Resort Paris, Imagineers chose Epcot as the next park for Remy to visit – with Les Chefs de France serving as the perfect Parisian setting for his Walt Disney World debut.

Guests dining at Les Chefs de France are encouraged to make advance reservations by calling 407/WDW-DINE (407/939-3463) up to 90 days prior to their visit. "Bon Appétit from Chef Remy" is scheduled to take place at Les Chefs de France Monday through Saturday until Sept. 5, 2009 (subject to change). (Source: Press Release, 04/06/09)
