A subscriber writes about last week's article on the Treehouse Villas at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa:

"I saw the information on the Tree Houses, they look like a lot of fun. However there was nothing regarding being handicapped accessible. Will any of the tree houses have elevators or other accommodations for people that can't handle the steps?"

Four of the 60 Treehouse Villas will have an entrance ramp.

Wendy writes about Beth's comments last week in reference to vacation complaints:

"Hi John,

I’ve been a member for a really long time and Beth has made our vacations magical for 7 years. I have to say that her response is right on the money. There is nothing worse than people who complain about everything, even the most minor things that should not be a bother. The thing I love best about Disney is that it is the 'Happiest Place on Earth' but it is only like that if you embrace the Magic. If you let every minor issue become a huge problem then you will guarantee that not only will you have a terrible time but you will not feel any magic!

We have been traveling to Disney with a group of 8 every year and many times more than once a year from Canada. We have experienced our share of troubles, the most recent being a December trip where our 6 year old had a terrible flu bug and was sick every day for 6 days of our vacation. We also had some extra family members with us on that trip who had to complain just like in the article that their room was 4 doors down instead of right next to us. We tried not to let it bother us but it was a damper. You have to find the positive in everything and that is definitely the lesson we try and teach our kids. We had 50 degree weather when we were there in late January/early February 2009 – so what! Bundle up and get going. You will see all the fun and magic if you open your eyes to the great things Disney has to offer instead of only a pessimistic Eeyore kind of attitude.

I’m proud of Beth for pointing out that attitude is everything! We haven’t had a poor vacation yet."
=================================================
Beth, our travel agent, writes about Disney's summer dining plan price increase:

"If you do not have a dining plan and are visiting Disney World soon, it's important to remember that some dining locations increase their prices for early summer. Seasonal pricing applies May 24 - July 12. In most cases, the increase is $4 for ages 10+, $2 ages 3-9. The locations this price increase applies to are: Akershus, Biergarten, Boma, Cape May Café, Chef Mickey’s, Cinderella’s Royal Table, Crystal Palace, Garden Grill, Hollywood and Vine, Liberty Tree Tavern (dinner), ‘Ohana, Trails End, Tusker House, and 1900 Park Fare."
=================================================
Beth, our travel agent, writes about Disney's Fun Card Option:

EVERYONE who enters a park on their birthday is entitled to free admission. If, for whatever reason, you don't want free admission (say, for instance, because it's already paid for as part of your package, or because you have an annual pass), you can opt for one of three other choices: a 1-day base ticket for the birthday person good for a year from date of issue, a group FastPass button, or a gift card. The FastPass works only for that day, only in one park, and for up to 6 people. You can use it once on each attraction using the Fastpass system that day; flash your badge and your gang is in, without having to go through the hassle of getting the usual paper FastPasses and without coming back during the return time window. My feeling is that everyone is entitled to use the FastPass system anyway, and while this offer may be handy under certain conditions, I'm not sure I'd set a very high dolor value on it.

The free 'come back later' ticket is great - if you'll be back within a year, and if you don't usually get some sort of multi-day pass. Most people that go two or more times a year DO have multi-day passes of some sort, so the dollar value of this option could be as little as $3. On the other hand, you can apply the value of it to the purchase of any other ticket *if done at the time of pick-up* so if you were going to purchase an annual pass that day (or whatever) that's a nice little down payment.

Still, the best deal in my book is the 'fun card' (like a gift card) which has a value of $63 or $75, depending on your age. That gift card can be used to purchase a variety of things on Disney property. It was originally thought that these cards would be good ONLY on your birthday. Then they said they'd be good for your length of stay. They ended up issuing them without expiration date. So you could, in theory, bring it back five years from now and use it on something. My concern, though, would be that after this promotion is over and Disney has moved on to other things, you'll find that card accepted for fewer and fewer things. I'd be inclined NOT to sit on the card until later, but rather use it on the visit you got it. As pointed out, though, you can buy admission to water parks with it, making the cost for a family of four much more in line with the average budget for such things.

Anyway, my whole point is that ANYONE can get the fun card as their birthday option, and ANYONE can use the card towards water park admission."

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"In last week's Affordable Disney newsletter there was a link to a letter written to the National Geographic Traveler ombudsman. The writer of the letter apparently listed numerous complaints about his Disney World vacation, and (thankfully) the ombudsman only printed some of them. I thought perhaps I should address some of these issues in an attempt to save Disney from getting even more letters like this one.

First, Grand Gatherings are groups of 8 or more people (ages 3+) traveling together. Contrary to what the writer stated, everyone is NOT on the same reservation. They are simply cross-referenced. Disney does their best to keep the group's rooms together, but there is no guarantee. This group had one room down the hall from the rest. I'd say Disney did a good job! The family down the hall could have checked with the front desk each morning to see if maybe they could move closer, but that seems like a lot of hassle over a minor issue if you ask me. This was certainly not cause for getting feathers ruffled.

Next, the writer stated that they initially couldn't get into the Magic Kingdom because their 'travel agent had ordered the wrong tickets.' Not possible. ALL Disney World park tickets would have gotten them into the Magic Kingdom. My guess is that they went to a different park first and then tried to enter the MK later that day. If they didn't have park hopping on the tickets, they wouldn't have been able to get in there (or anywhere else other than the first park they went to). Is lack of the hopping option the agent's fault? Perhaps. If the client stated they wanted hopping and the agent didn't put it on then yes, it was. If the client didn't ask for the option, then no - although I personally always point out to people that without hopping that they won't be able to visit more than one park a day. At least I know they're making an informed decision. Maybe both the client and the agent were naive about hopping so neither thought about it... a good reason to use an agent that specializes in Disney! Also, always look over the confirmation carefully prior to traveling; you may catch something and be able to get it fixed before you get there.

Then the writer gripes about the monorail breaking down. As the ombudsman points out, it happens. Folks, the monorail is 30 years old. It's amazing it doesn't break down more often. When it does, chalk it up to an unscheduled adventure. You'll eventually get to your destination, and if you've missed a dining reservation because of the delay they'll do their best to get you in as soon as possible.

Another complaint: the Keys to the Kingdom didn't always work. Again, it happens. The technology isn't perfect. It's a glitch you'd rather not deal with, and for-sure not several times, but you're on vacation so roll with the punches and laugh it off. There's humor in nearly every situation if you look hard enough.

Still another disappointment: lines at Soarin' and a 5-hour delay on the return time for its FastPass. I loved the ombudsman's reply that they should have gone early in the morning or traveled in the off season. If neither of those is possible, though, you have to expect that the most popular attractions will be crowded. FastPass is a real blessing in that you no longer HAVE to stand in line if you don't want to. Surely the group could have found something to do at Epcot for five hours; I doubt Soarin' was their sole reason for visiting the park. Keep in mind that the earlier in the day you grab a FastPass, the sooner your return time will be. By mid-to-late morning the return times could be many hours later... and when it's REALLY busy all the FastPasses for the day are taken before lunch time! If lines aren't your thing then, as the ombudsman says, go early or avoid peak season.

And finally, there's the gripe about the dining plan system. The writer says that the dining plan was new. It's been around for several years now, so perhaps what the writer experienced is no longer a problem. The dining plans did have a few bugs to work out at first. These days, aside from having a hard time getting reservations, the one and only complaint I hear with any consistency is that groups of 6 or more have an 18% gratuity *automatically* charged back to their rooms. I can't change that, but I do try to make a point of telling groups that's the case. It's also stated in the dining brochures, and it's printed on many of the menus. I doubt you'll run into any execution problems when dealing with the plans... The cast members are now very comfortable with how it all works.

My last comment would be regarding complaints in general. Attitude is everything, while on vacation just as in life in general. When you're looking for problems, you can find them. If you're determined to be unhappy, you will be. Conversely, if you choose to see your glass as half full, problems are no more than minor inconveniences at worst. If you have a bothersome issue, don't wait until you get home to try and do something about it. Discuss it with the front desk or a park/restaurant employee, as the case may be. If that doesn't get you anywhere, ask to speak with a manager. If you still don't get anywhere, call your travel agent. If you have a legitimate complaint, everyone will do their very best to fix the problem. Understand that correcting the situation (and an apology) are all you're due. Don't expect to be bumped up to a suite at the Grand Floridian or be given dinner in the castle for your troubles. I'm not saying things like that don't happen, but it's rare... and writing a lengthy, nasty letter when you get home in the hopes of getting something free is just plain wrong."

Walt Disney World Guests ‘Go Galactic’ In New Live Tomorrowland Show: ‘Stitch’s SuperSonic Celebration’

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - He’s been called the "Guru of Gross-Out" and "the Maker of Mischief." Now Stitch stars in his very own live show, "Stitch’s SuperSonic Celebration," an out-of-this-world spectacle that combines comedic quips and musical madness for Walt Disney World guests.

The all-new show at Magic Kingdom stars the cosmic cut-up from Walt Disney Pictures’ "Lilo & Stitch" as he invades a zany interactive experience at the Rockettower Plaza Stage in Tomorrowland. Guests join in a Galaxy Day celebration when the outdoor stage comes alive with high-energy music, dazzling dance moves and real-time animation.

The 25-minute show features the same cutting-edge technology used in "Turtle Talk With Crush" and "Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor," letting guests interact with an animated Stitch in one-on-one encounters. The fuzzy, loveable alien officially known as "Experiment 626" spots specific guests in the audience, asks questions and entertains them in a playful and personalized way.

Whether Stitch takes digital snapshots of audience members or comments on clothing they’re wearing, the show is different every time. He engages audience members of all ages, making them the "stars" of the intergalactic interlude.

In the show, guests follow Stitch as he pilots a "borrowed" space cruiser. Stitch joins a cast of cosmic characters – including party host Tip Trendo, space diva dancers and two malfunctioning, breakdancing robots – on his celebratory journey to planet Earth.

"‘Stitch’s SuperSonic Celebration’ immerses Tomorrowland guests into Stitch’s whimsical world using real-time animation technology," said Kristine Bunnell, show producer for Walt Disney World Entertainment. "And during this year’s ‘What Will You Celebrate?’ our show gives guests another reason to party."

"Stitch’s SuperSonic Celebration" is scheduled six times daily. For more information about show times or Walt Disney World Resort, guests may visit disneyworld.com. (Source: Press Release, 05/07/09)

The Pirates League Sets Sail in Magic Kingdom June 29

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Calling all scoundrels, rogues and ne’er-do-wells – Captain Jack and the crew of the Black Pearl want you.

Starting in late June, the Pearl drops anchor in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom for The Pirates League, recruiting and training Walt Disney World guests of all ages in the scurrilous ways of buccaneers.

Each guest checking in at the plunder-filled pirate’s lair gets an official pirate name. Then it’s off to Muster Station for applications of beards and eye patches, scarves and scars, earrings and gold teeth - all done with the savvy skill of a veteran pirate who shares his own tales of sea-sailing adventures.

After the new buccaneers recite a sacred pirate oath, they are officially part of Captain Jack’s motley crew, leaving their old identities behind. Past a hidden portal and into the treasure room, the shipmates have their "pirate portrait" taken before being turned loose on an unsuspecting Adventureland - and no doubt feeling right at home at the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction.

Guests can choose from three daily pirate packages:

* First Mate Package: Includes bandana; choice of facial effects; scars; tattoos; fake teeth; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace;

* one 5x7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath -- $49.95 plus tax.

* Empress Package: Includes bandana; shimmering makeup; face gem; tattoos; nail polish; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace;

* one 5x7-inch photo; and personalized pirate oath -- $49.95 plus tax.

* Captains Package: Includes choice of costume/outfit from selection; choice of facial effects; scars; tattoos; fake teeth; earring and eye patch; sword and sheath; pirate coin necklace; three 5x7-inch photos; and personalized pirate oath -- $124.95 plus tax.

Newly donned swashbucklers can test their pirate prowess on the streets of Adventureland where they search for clues and discover treasures. And for mateys who need a little more training, learn the secrets for survival by the captain himself during "Captain Jack Sparrow’s Pirate Tutorial."

Boys, girls and grownups ready for the pirate life can start the process by calling 407/WDW-CREW beginning May 11. For more information about The Pirates League, visit disneyworld.com/crew. (Source: Press Release, 05/11/09)

Disney Channel Stars Ahoy! Kodak and Disney Cruise Line Bring Exclusive Fan Experience to the High Seas

CELEBRATION, Fla. - In a Disney exclusive, numerous Disney Channel stars will set sail this summer, joining thousands of Disney Cruise Line guests aboard the Disney Wonder for eight special sailings during the first-ever "Disney Channel Summer at Sea," presented by Kodak.

"We’re thrilled to partner with Disney Channel and offer guests on our ship a unique opportunity to sail with Disney Channel stars," said Disney Cruise Line President Karl Holz. "A cruise vacation with Disney Cruise Line is always a family-favorite and ‘Disney Channel Summer at Sea’ provides families another reason to set sail and experience the Disney difference."

Popular stars from Disney Channel shows like "Hannah Montana," "Sonny With A Chance," "Wizards of Waverly Place," "The Suite Life on Deck," "JONAS," "Camp Rock," "High School Musical" and "Hatching Pete" will sail with guests on three- and four-night Bahamian cruises taking place July 9 through August 2. During these themed sailings, Disney Channel stars will help pump up the volume during onboard deck parties and will join guests for Q & A and autograph sessions along with preview screenings of Disney Channel programming. The onboard fun culminates with a "Party with the Stars" event, an evening where guests can join the stars for a special live musical performance. As an added treat, Radio Disney will broadcast live from the ship during two of the cruises.

Aligning with Kodak's "It's Time to Smile" campaign, all Disney fans will be able to share in the ship-to-shore fun online. Select video-blog reporters onboard the ship will capture their magical vacation memories on a ‘KODAK Zi6 Pocket Video Camera’ and post video from their voyages at disney.com/summeratsea.

"At Kodak, we’re all about relationships. We bring people together through images and are thrilled to work with the Disney Channel to help Disney fans share their magical vacation memories," said Kodak Chief Marketing Officer and Vice President Jeffrey Hayzlett.

Each cruise during "Disney Channel Summer at Sea" will include multiple Disney Channel stars. Among those scheduled to sail include Tiffany Thornton from "Sonny With A Chance" (July 9 & 12), Nicole Anderson "JONAS" (July 9 & 12), Jason Earles from "Hannah Montana" (July 16 & 19), Mitchel Musso from "Hannah Montana" (July 19), Jason Dolley from "Hatching Pete" (July 23 & 26), Debby Ryan from "The Suite Life on Deck" (July 30) and Alyson Stoner from "Camp Rock" (Aug. 2). More stars will be announced shortly, guests can visit disneycruise.com/summeratsea frequently for up-to-date information on the line-up of stars sailing. (Talent is subject to change without notice.)

"Disney Channel Summer at Sea" adds to the family-friendly fun found onboard a Disney ship. Disney Cruise Line provides a vacation experience that every member of the family feels was created just for them. Families enjoy award-winning Broadway-style entertainment at the Walt Disney Theatre, play together at high-energy deck parties featuring the only fireworks display at sea and dine in three uniquely themed restaurants. Kids delight in their own dedicated spaces and become immersed in Disney stories with their favorite characters and hosted by specially trained youth counselors. While the kids are at play, parents can slip away and relax at the spa, soak up rays at the adult-only pool, dance the night away in the clubs, or enjoy an exquisite Northern Italian meal at Palo.

A leader in the family cruise segment, Disney Cruise Line offers three-, four- and seven-night itineraries to the Bahamas and the Caribbean with special voyages to the Mediterranean and Northern Europe on tap for 2010. Disney Channel Summer at Sea voyages are exclusive to three- and four-night itineraries on the Disney Wonder between July 9 and Aug. 2 with rates starting at $679 per person -- based on double occupancy for a category 12 inside stateroom, not including government taxes and fees. Land/sea vacation packages that include a stay at Walt Disney World Resort are also available. To learn more about Disney Cruise Line or to book a vacation, guests can contact their travel agent, visit disneycruise.com or call Disney Cruise Line at 888/DCL-2500. Travel agents can call Disney Cruise Line at 888/325-2500 or visit disneytravelagents.com.

Universal Orlando Resort Kicks Off Brand-New “Sizzling” Summer Concert Series

New Series Features Live Performances by Chart-Toppers Including Jordin Sparks and Natasha Bedingfield at Universal’s New Concert Venue, The Music Plaza

Universal Orlando is kicking off its first-ever Summer Concert Series with performances by some of music’s biggest talent - live at its new outdoor Music Plaza. Beginning Saturday, June 13 and running Saturday nights through July 4, the new concert series will give guests the chance to top off their day in the park with a nighttime mega-concert.

The concert line-up features four of the biggest names in pop, hip-hop and R&B - all of whom are chart-topping, multi-platinum, Grammy Award nominees and winners.

First up is "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks, whose self-titled album has sold more than a million copies. Sparks will be followed by hip-hop icon LL Cool J, with more than 15 million records sold and 20 singles on the Billboard charts. Then comes British songstress Natasha Bedingfield, with album sales of more than 10 million – and Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Famers, The O’Jays.

SUMMER CONCERT SERIES LINEUP

* June 13 Jordin Sparks
* June 20 LL Cool J
* June 27 Natasha Bedingfield
* July 4 The O’Jays

The concert series spotlights Universal Orlando’s new home for hit music – the Music Plaza. Located in the heart of the Universal Studios theme park, the Music Plaza debuted during Universal’s Mardi Gras event earlier this year. It is a state-of-the-art outdoor music venue designed in the spirit of one of the most famous outdoor concert venues of all-time, The Hollywood Bowl: home to landmark performances by everyone from the Beatles to Elton John and more. The Music Plaza features a 2,400-square-foot performance stage, a 15,000-square-foot viewing lawn and two 20-foot-tall projection screens so that everyone can see the show.

"Our Music Plaza has quickly become Orlando’s perfect place to enjoy great music outdoors," said Jim Timon, senior vice president of entertainment for Universal Orlando Resort. "Our Summer Concert Series will continue that tradition – and be an amazing experience for everyone from dedicated music fans to families wanting a great way to end their day in the parks." Beth, our travel agent, recommends these strollers:

"My favorite company for wheelchairs and ECVs now carries strollers - and they're really nice! They have both single and side-by-side double strollers made by InStep. These three-wheelers have a basket below and a sun shade above, and the front swivel wheel locks into a stationary position for bumpy terrain. The strollers are light-weight and fold easily. Pricing is $20 for the first day, $10 each additional day; $60 for the week, $5 each additional day over 7 - and free delivery to your hotel! (The Disney cost is $15/day single, $31/day double with a discount to $13/$27/day for multi-day rentals - but the molded plastic is uncomfy and you cannot take the stroller out of the park with you.)"

Runners Face ‘Challenge’ for Exclusive New Disney Medal

Finishers of two fall races to earn one-of-a-kind medal; events to feature expanded race options; registration now open

Disney Sports is creating a one-of-a-kind bonus medal for runners who complete the Fall Race Challenge, competing in two of Disney’s three fall endurance events at Walt Disney World Resort. Runners that record an official time for Disney’s Race for the Taste 10K and either the Expedition Everest Challenge presented by Champion or The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K will receive the bonus medal in addition to individual race medals - a total of three race medals for running two races. Registration for all three fall events is now open.

"Disney is dedicated to providing guests with new, interactive features to make their race experience more fun, more exciting and more memorable," says Disney Endurance Series Director Kathleen Duran. "We are always looking for new ways to differentiate our Disney events by creating unique, immersive experiences."

Disney’s fall lineup includes expanded race options. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13k event will feature a 5k and an exclusive post-race party. Disney’s Race for the Taste 10k event will include a new 3k race designed for casual runners and those looking to compete in their first endurance event.

The Disney Endurance Series fall lineup includes:

Expedition Everest Challenge presented by Champion (Sept. 26, 2009): This second-year event is the first urban adventure race in Disney’s Endurance Series. The two-person team competition features a 5k, scavenger hunt and an obstacle course designed to challenge runners physically and mentally. There is an exclusive post-race party at Disney’s Animal Kingdom for the finishers. A portion of all entry fees will benefit the Himalayan Youth Foundation and Disney’s Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Disney’s Race for the Taste 10K (Oct. 11, 2009): This race takes runners through Disney’s Hollywood Studios and around the 11 pavilions of Epcot World Showcase. Guests have access to a post-race picnic that includes food samples from the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, live Disney entertainment, music, games and face painters.

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 13K (Oct. 24, 2009): This road race returns for its third year and the journey includes a haunting course through the vacant streets of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The event includes an exclusive post-race party with family and friends.

To register for these and more Disney Endurance Series events including the Walt Disney World Marathon (Jan. 7-10, 2010), visit disneyenduranceseries.com.
