Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"About once a month someone tells me they've been thinking about becoming a travel agent. My response is always the same: Why?

Don't get me wrong. I love my job, and the fact that I specialize in cruising, Disney, and luxury properties - products that rarely produce unhappy customers - makes it even better. I've been in the industry for 23 years now (with just brief breaks from time to time), and I wouldn't still be doing it if I didn't find it both enjoyable AND profitable enough to put food on the table. As a divorced mom, I also find that being self-employed allows me the flexibility I need to get everything done. I'm a lucky woman!

Being a travel agent does not, however, provide one with the glamorous and exciting life that many people seem to envision. At least 75% of the people that tell me they are considering being a travel agent do so after hearing about YTB. They are enticed by the prospect of not only earning money by selling friends and family travel, but also getting very low priced - or even free - travel opportunities for themselves. They all seem to have visions of putting in a few hours a week and, in return, earning some extra pocket money AND taking their family on a super-cheap cruise vacation next summer. What's not to love??!!

But lets look at YTB a little more closely. According to their website, 99.65% of their representatives earned an average of less than $1900 per year. 80.92% earned nothing at all. The average annual income of all reps was $299.95, and the median income was $97. Now, you need to earn at least $5000 a year and work a verifiable 20 hours a week to get an IATAN card, considered the industry's leading type of identification identification and the ONLY way to qualify for many of the low-cost agent trips (called 'fam' trips, short for 'familiarization'). Under half a percent of all YTB reps earned that card - and every single one of them worked an average of 40 hours a week or more. Hmmmm.... Not exactly the picture that your neighbor was painting for you when trying to sign you up, huh?

I'm only using YTB because it's the organization I hear the most about from clients, but there are several of them out there and the story is always the same. Folks, it's a great job to have, but it's a job like any other. To be successful it takes years to build the business, and a LOT of hard work. I usually put in seven days a week and average about 60-70 hours. It's commissioned sales and you don't get paid until the clients travel and the agency receives the check (and takes their cut off the top) so I never know from one month to the next how much I'm going to make until I submit a commission request. About 25% of every check is immediately set aside for the IRS. (You get to be VERY good at money management!)

And as for all those great travel opportunities, the last discount on airfare I got was in 1992. I do get plenty of hotel discounts, but the rate is typically half off the full rack rate. Sometimes the AAA or promotional rate is better. I had a shot at a free week for two in Tuscany last summer with Adventures by Disney... but it didn't include the airfare (over $3000), and gratuities and spending money were also additional. Just as well since I couldn't take a week off anyway. In fact, I pretty much never go anywhere that doesn't have internet access, and my laptop is the first piece of luggage I pack. Walking away from email access for a week or more is the kiss of death in this business!

Like I said, please don't misunderstand. I have dabbled in other industries and I always come back to travel. It's what I love, and I'm going to keep doing it. I'm good at it, I know my products, and I'm confident that I can help people plan great vacations. Maybe you can be good at it, too.

Being a home-based travel agent might be the answer to your prayers. You need to approach it as a real job, though. Set aside a dedicated part of your home as office space. Be prepared to put in 20+ hours a week if you're serious about it, and don't expect to make more than a few hundred dollars the first six months. Sign up for every industry publication and read them cover to cover religiously. Take every online training course you can, and then choose just a few things to specialize in. (No travel agent can be really good at selling the whole world.) Join industry organizations that give you lots of support and the chance to meet and learn from others in the business. Avoid joining groups that want you to recruit others as agents. (Read this article: http://www.smartertravel.com/travel-advice/travel-like-travel-agent-not-so-fast.html?id=2618056) And then go for it. I, for one, think there's always room for another awesome travel agent!"

Nickelodeon Holds Team Tryouts For My Family’s Got Guts

A New Extreme Sports Competition Series Saturday, June 28 And Sunday, June 29 At Universal CityWalk In Orlando

WHO: Nickelodeon is looking for local families from the Orlando area to try out for a new extreme sports competition series My Family’s Got Guts. Nickelodeon is seeking team members comprised of four players -- two adults and two kids -- who must be related by marriage, birth or adoption. Team members must display team spirit, be in good health, able to participate in physical activity and have the GUTS to play and win.

CRITERIA: Each four-member team must include two adults and two kids (i.e. 1 parent, 1 aunt, 2 brothers or 1 parent, 1 grandparent, 2 cousins, etc.)

To qualify, kids must be between the ages of 11-16 (as of August 1, 2008), weigh more than 75 lbs., and be at least 4’6" in height.

To qualify, adults must be 25 years and older (as of August 1, 2008), weigh between 110 and 250 lbs., and be at least 4’8" in height.

Pre-registration is required. For additional criteria information and to pre-register, please visit www.GUTStryouts.com

WHAT: My Family’s Got GUTS is based on the groundbreaking Nickelodeon original hit game show, GUTS. The new and improved series is being recreated for a new generation of families. This extreme sports competition series brings families together where every member of the team -- from the smallest to the strongest -- plays a vital role and works together to complete each challenge. Every episode will feature two teams of four players (two adults and two kids) who gather in the ‘Extreme Arena’ to compete against each other in two rounds of events inspired by today’s extreme sports. The point values increase each round giving both teams a chance to come from behind. In the final round, the families face off on ‘The Crag,’ a new updated 3D, super challenging version of the original GUTS’ Aggro Crag fantasy mountain. The team with the most points at the end of all three rounds wins the competition.

"June is the month for my 10-year-old daughter's annual solo trip to Grandma's house. Unfortunately, there are currently no airlines flying nonstop to Raleigh or Greensboro so we had to choose another departure point. For Disney lovers, the choice between Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando is an easy one. We drove to Orlando the day prior to her flight.

Despite a short 'leg stretch' break, we still made it to Downtown Disney in an uneventful 3.5 hours and arrived at the Earl of Sandwich just in time for lunch. We were pleased to see that the line was short and seating was still ample - which was not the case a very short time later. The line, however, does move really fast even during peak meal time. Two thumbs up on both the food and the pricing. In fact, the yummy sandwiches are large enough that we could have shared one. Along with our shared dessert and beverage it would have been plenty and we could have come in under $10. As it was, with two drinks, a giant cupcake, and two sandwiches, we were just under $18 and we each had half a sandwich left for later. They were promptly tossed in my thermal lunch bag in the trunk of the car before we headed to Disney Quest on the other side of Downtown Disney.

I'll readily admit this was our first time to Disney Quest. It's true! We've been to Disney World more times than we can count and have just never made it over there. Honestly, I was having a hard time imagining that it was going to be worth $40 a person admission so I always seemed to come up with about 300 other things that had higher priority. This time, though, we were just at WDW for one night and I thought it was a good time to try it out. The fact that I had one admission usable from an old ticket helped, too.

As you enter the lobby and pass through the turnstiles you're asked if you've ever been there before. If not, you're given a brief explanation of the elevators and told that the Genie will appear on the wall during your short trip up. I'm a tad claustrophobic and I didn't like being shut in that elevator at all... even in the dark when it's easier to pretend the thing is huge. Fortunately, there was no one else in there with us so I could move about a little and it really was a pretty short presentation. Out we popped on the third floor.

A cast member greeted us and asked if we had any questions. I requested a map, but was told that there were none available to hand out. We were, however, led to a wall map and that helped. We quickly realized we needed to be on the ground level, but aside from the fact that the elevators were slow I wasn't anxious to get back in one so we took the stairs down. Amazingly, there was no line at all for the Jungle Cruise attraction so we had a very short wait. We were led to a four-man raft where my daughter seated herself in the front and I climbed in the back. We were each given a paddle, and then the raft lifted up as a giant air pillow inflated below us and the screen ahead came alive with animation. The idea is that you 'control' your raft with the sensor-embedded paddles, maneuvering your way through caverns and down white-water rapids in the quest for... well, I'm not exactly sure what - but it was fun! We even got splashed (just a little) each time we went over a drop. This attraction is entertaining and probably won't bother you even if you have a tendency towards motion sickness. It's fine even for the younger set.

Then we checked out Pirates of the Caribbean. Long line, long wait. Was it worth it? Well, maybe once. After placing a 3-D apparatus over your head you're led onto the deck of your 'ship.' It really does feel like you're on a boat! One person is the designated captain and takes the wheel while the others man the canons. The captain 'steers' towards virtual pirate ships so that the gunners can fire at them, sink the ships, and take all the gold. It was amusing, I'll give it that.

Our next stop was upstairs where we entered a song booth and created our own country western ditty. It was a fun thing to do together, good for all ages, and it's sort of cool to hear how the same lyrics can sound so different when the style of music is changed. We had the option of purchasing a CD of our masterpiece, but we declined and moved on. The animation drawing lessons start periodically and we didn't want to wait for the next class so we passed that one up.

The line for the Astroblaster bumper cars was a long one so we just watched. It looked sort of fun, but as soon as my daughter discovered that the video games along the wall didn't require money to play she lost all interest in the bumper cars. I admit that I, too, got sucked into the idea that I could try to get high score on Galaga without digging for quarters. We played for a good 20 minutes or so before setting out to find Aladdin and check out those flying carpets. Sadly, an ill-fitting 3-D helmet made that experience rather uncomfortable for me. If you wear glasses, you might want to take them off (if you can still see well enough) or wear contacts. The attraction doesn't take too long, but I got an amazingly strong case of motion sickness from it and needed a break (and some aspirin) after that one. I think it was a combination of my glasses being smashed against my face, having to hold the front of the viewing thing up with one hand, and then the apparent motion of the virtual reality experience. No more flying carpets for me!

Our next stop was the one my daughter had been waiting for: Virtual Space Mountain. There was no line at all for the creation part of the ride. We were shown to a control panel where you are able to design your own coaster. You can make it as scary or tame as you want to. At the end, your coaster is rated for intensity and you are given an idea of what the ride would be like. Then you take your credit card-like ID and head to part 2 of the attraction - and there was a rather lengthy line for this part. Eventually, it was our turn and we were led up a short flight of stairs and down to pod #8 where a cast member swiped my daughter's card and verified the name of her coaster. She was told to empty her pockets into a locker and was given the key on a wrist band. Then she was led into the pod itself and was harnessed in just like a real coaster. (I sat this one out. My tummy was still upset over the flying carpet adventure.) I stood outside the pod and watched my daughter's face on camera as she "rode" her coaster. I could also see what she was seeing on the screen ahead of her, so it was fun. Hers was a tame ride indeed, but I saw a few kids emerging with a distinctive green hue to their faces - no doubt a result of several high-speed drops and inversions. This is a fabulous attraction for serious coaster lovers, and you can purchase a DVD or tape of your ride afterwards if you care to. It can be intense, though, if you design it that way.

We didn't get around to Ride the Comix, Alien Encounter, or Pinball Slam, but they all sounded equally fun. We both agreed that this is a really cool and entertaining thing to do on a hot afternoon - or a rainy one, although I hear the placed is packed when it rains. Allow at least 3-4 hours to play. (Yes, you can come back later the same day as long as you have your ticket with you.)

The drive up from Naples was long and the virtual flying carpet experience took a lot out of me, so we decided to head to the hotel, Caribbean Beach Resort. Again, this was a first. I've visited, but never stayed there. We parked at the Custom House and found that the line at 4:00 was non-existent so it took mere minutes to check in and get back to the car. NOTE that if you don't have a car you are not allowed to take luggage on the internal bus (or any Disney bus, for that matter) so you'd have to give your baggage to the handlers to take to your room. It's probably going to be too far away for you to lug it by foot. We were in the Aruba section which is one of the closer ones to the check-in building and I was thankful to be driving rather than walking.

All buildings are 2-story and there are no elevators. We trudged up the steps with our overnight bag and small cooler of bottled water and leftover lunch sandwiches, quickly found the room, and settled in. As I've said a million times before, the rooms are pretty much the same as in all the moderate resorts. I've heard they are technically slightly larger, but it's surely not enough to be noticeable. The water was tossed into the frig and we plopped down at the table to polish off the lunch leftovers. Yum. We then discussed our options and ultimately decided to drive over to the Winter Summerland miniature golf course. Those that buy a vacation package will find that they receive one pass per person to miniature golf when they arrive at their hotel and it's a nice savings. My daughter chose the winter course and it seemed odd to hear Christmas carols as we played our way through 18 fun holes in the 90 degree heat. Most of the course is shaded, though, and the sun had dropped a bit in the sky so it was really pretty pleasant. On the way out, we were each given a collectable golf ball, a tiny candy cane, and a small Sharpie marker. I have no idea what that was about, but it's always nice to get unexpected presents!

Then off we went to Coronado Springs, just a short drive down the street. We started with the gift shop. My daughter was nearly desperate for one of those lollipops in the shape of Winnie the Pooh's head, but it seems Pooh pops are scarce these days so we gave up the search and headed for the Pepper Market, one of our favorite quick service locations on Disney property. After being seated by the hostess we were greeted by our server who quickly took our drink order, but was very slow to return with the drinks. My daughter waited at the table while I wandered over to the food stations to get our dinner. This time, we wised up and shared. We went with the bourbon chicken which is served with a mountain of stir-fried veggies and a great big bowl of rice (or noodles). That and two iced teas filled us both up. Total tab with tax and gratuity: $20 and change. (The food is great here, but pricey - which is what makes it such a good deal if you have the Disney dining plan.)

Two changes I noted at Coronado since my last visit: a new (and VERY cool looking) cocktail lounge (Cafe Rix) which is adults only at night, but kids are permitted earlier; and Cafe Rix Cafe which replaced the grab-n-go spot near the Pepper Market entry. It's still grab-n-go, but with a much-expanded menu that includes some made-to-order hot items.

Then back to the hotel we went. We changed into our bathing suits and walked to the closest pool. The main pool (with the water slide) continues to be closed while being completely replaced with what will probably end up being the best moderate resort pool area when done. We were fine with the regular pool, though. I'm pretty much always cold so even though the pool is heated it was too chilly for me to be comfortable. My daughter and the 10 or so other people in the large pool looked happy enough, though. After getting our exercise and drying off adequately, we donned our cover-ups and strolled across the bridge to Old Port Royale for the gift shop and food court. We started with dessert - a cupcake each and some iced tea to share (about $6 total) and then a bit of shopping. Still no Pooh pop, so we settled on a different lolly and grabbed some Mickey pretzels to take to Grandma (a real pretzel fan). At under $3 for a good sized bag, those pretzels are a bargain!

Warning to parents with Webkinz addicted children: seemingly all the Disney gift shops now carry them so beware!

Back to the room for showers and a good night's sleep before pulling out bright and early for the airport. We left at 7:35, and still no express check-out bill under the door. (That's the first time that's happened.) The drive to the airport is an easy one - as long as you have a big pocket of change for all the tolls. The line to check in an unaccompanied minor with Southwest held us up for about 30 minutes, but the lines at security weren't bad at all (which isn't always the case). We had an airport-quality breakfast near the gate (meaning over priced and not real tasty), but the flight was off right on time and I trudged back to the car to shell out my parking fee ($1 per 20 minutes) and start home. Many more tolls and about 4 hours later I was back home in front of my computer, another trip to WDW complete - albeit a brief one. Next scheduled trip: December '08 - but knowing us there will be another visit squeezed in before then."

Newest Walt Disney World Restaurant Chooses Screw Caps Over Cork

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Wave, the new restaurant just opened at Disney's Contemporary Resort, is all about bold ideas, featuring modern American cooking with a dash of world flavors. And an unusual wine program with more than 50 choices by the glass matches the forward-thinking cuisine.

"The Wave suggests a surge of new ideas," said Master Sommelier John Blazon, manager of wine sales and standards, Walt Disney World Resort. "It's a chance to have some fun with a wine list that balances New World flavors and a variety of price points."

Blazon put together a taste of the best New World wines with 95 cutting-edge choices that are all screw cap. The approachable list supports sustainable agriculture, he says, with a majority of the wines originating from vineyards where grapes are organically grown, or farmers are using sustainable methods.

"And the recyclable screw caps are nothing short of a revolution in wine packaging," said Blazon. Industry experts say that the screw cap is the most significant technical evolution in the wine industry since the glass bottle was introduced 250 years ago.

"In the forward-thinking wine industry, screw caps are gaining rapid acceptance," said Blazon. Research shows that the screw cap consistently provides the most reliable wine quality (spoilage is as high as 9 percent for corked bottles). The New Zealand wine industry, for instance, has set high standards for quality and bottles more than 90 percent of its wines with screw caps.

The options for screw cap wine are growing, said Blazon. The Wave serves no California wines (California Grill on the resort's 15th floor has a corner on that market), but instead focuses on bright-style New World wines from the Southern Hemisphere, including Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Prices range from $37 for a bottle of pinot gris from Mendoza, Argentina, to $160 for a syrah from Eden Valley, Ore. By-the-glass prices range from $8 to $20.

With 45 whites and 40 reds on the list, the biggest challenge was finding Bordeaux-style grapes, said Blazon, because the industry still is hesitant to put expensive reds into screw cap bottles. But when Blazon visited one of New Zealand's top estates, Craggy Range Winery, he worked with the winery to bottle half bottles of merlot from the Gimblett Gravels region in Hawkes Bay, "arguably some of the finest merlot out of New Zealand," said Blazon. Exclusively at The Wave guests can unscrew a half bottle of Craggy Range Te Kahu, Gimblett Gravels, and Craggy Range Sophia, Gimblett Gravels.

Pinot noir standouts on the list from New Zealand include Craggy Range Te Muna, Martinborough; Pegasus Bay, Wairarapa, and Peregrine Wines, Central Otago.

Because of its range of styles, Australian shiraz (the Australians call it syrah) comprise the biggest collection of The Wave's wines, said Blazon. "It's flavorful, satisfying, and superb with food," said Blazon.

Among other interesting choices are sparkling wines from Tasmania, Rieslings from South Australia and floral New Wave whites from Argentina.

The Wave offers flights of three 3-ounce samplings, including syrahs, sauvignon blancs, pinot noirs and crisp whites. The sauvignon blanc flight, for instance, includes sips from three continents: New Zealand, Chile and South Africa, so that guests can compare and contrast the similarities and subtle differences of each, selected from top wineries in their class. "You never stop learning with wine," said Blazon. "Just around the corner is the next great glass."

The 220-seat Wave is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and features one of the largest lounges at Walt Disney World Resort. For reservations, call 407/WDW-DINE.

The restaurant is part of a revitalization at Disney's Contemporary Resort that includes a makeover of the hotel's fourth floor with a new game arcade and new quick-service eatery for salads and sandwiches (replacing Concourse Steakhouse). The popular Chef Mickey's restaurant and the monorail station anchor that family-friendly area. (Source: Press Release, 06/11/08)

Walt Disney World Guests Create Custom Mouse Ear Hats With the New ‘Build Your Own Ears Hat’ Boutique

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Every Kingdom has its crown jewels, and Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort is no different. But don't expect rubies or spires of gold: The jewels here -- those famous Mouse Ear hats -- come with a little extra "character."

Guests are finding a new, customized way to enjoy the already blossoming array of Ear hats offered at Florida's Vacation Kingdom. Exclusively at The Chapeau on Main Street U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom, guests can visit the Build Your Own Ears Hat boutique and fashion a set of ears that represents their individual personality.

"For the first time, guests can take our traditional, iconic Mickey Mouse Ears -- made famous in the 1950s with the Mickey Mouse Club -- and customize them," said Dara Trujillo, merchandise manager at Walt Disney World Resort. "Not only is this a unique product offering, but every set will be different, just like our guests."

Here's how it works:

* Guests start by choosing one of 19 bases in colors and materials such as purple satin, pink fur, blue velvet or green glow-in-the-dark.

* Next, guests choose two snap-on ears from an assortment such as metallic, rhinestone and holographic -- either two ears of the same variety or two different options for a really distinctive look.

* If they wish, guests can adorn their hat using peel-and-stick patches representing favorite Disney characters, Disney princesses and Disney Channel shows. Custom embroidery and stick-on letters are also available.

With thousands of combinations possible, it's easy for guests to create an Ear hat that is uniquely "them." And once the creation is complete, there's no fewer than seven mirrors stationed around the shop in which to admire the one-of-a-kind work of art.

"Guests take pride in showing off their creative talents," said Trujillo. "It's their way of saying, 'These were made just for me.'"

Prices vary based on how elaborate a creation a guest concocts. A basic hat -- a base, two ears and a chin strap -- starts around $7.50, with patches ($2.95 each), letters ($5.95 for a pack) and embroidery ($3.00) optional. Hats are one-size-fits-all, but can be adjusted to fit smaller guests using the chin strap. (Source: Press Release, 06/17/08)

Guests Score Big on Toy Story Mania! During First Month of Attraction's Operation at Disney's Hollywood Studios

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The points are piling up and the spring-action shooters are getting a workout during the first month of operation at Toy Story Mania! -- the new 4-D attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

An arcade-style tally at the ride's conclusion heralds the high scores of the day as guests try their best to beat the top totals. During the first month of daily operation, daily high scores regularly topped 200,000+ points, while all-time highs have reached the 300,000+ point range.

In Toy Story Mania!, guests don 3-D glasses and enter a wild and wooly 4-D world of Woody, Buzz and other favorite "Toy Story" characters. Inspired by the Disney-Pixar films "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2," Toy Story Mania! raises the bar for interactive ride-game attractions.

As vehicles move among midway-style game booths, guests aim for 3-D, animated targets using their own on-board spring-action shooters. Players pair up and sit side-by-side, scoring points in a friendly competition that delivers an ever-changing variety of targets and surprises.

As they play, guests can actually see the "virtual objects" they've launched -- everything from pies, plastic eggs and pointed darts ... to baseballs, rings and suction-cup darts -- leave their spring-action shooters and hit (or miss) the targets. And thanks to the 4-D special effects technology, they may sense objects popping out of the 3-D scenes and whirring past them.

Disneyland Resort in California also welcomed Toy Story Mania! when the attraction debuted June 17 at Disney's California Adventure theme park.

Tampa Bay Bucs Return to Disney for NFL Training Camp

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will come back for their seventh NFL training camp at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, from July 26-Aug. 14.

Featuring one of the league's most animated head coaches, the Jon Gruden-led Bucs seek to build on their winning ways from 2007 with a collection of established stars such as quarterback Jeff Garcia, linebacker Derrick Brooks and cornerback Ronde Barber.

The 2008 season will also see the return of Warrick Dunn back into the Buccaneer fold. The diminutive, big-play tailback spent his first five seasons with Tampa Bay, totaling more than 6,500 yards of offense and 26 touchdowns.

A fertile breeding ground for success, the Buccaneers have produced three division titles and one Super Bowl championship since first arriving at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in 2002. Fans once again will be allowed the unique access to witness the daily workouts and drills that NFL players undertake in preparation for the rigorous regular season, along with routine autograph opportunities following practice.

Hi Everyone!

NOTE: If you want to visit Walt Disney World when there is no deal for the general public, you will need to follow the discount strategies that are revealed in our online book, "Secrets To An Affordable Walt Disney World® Vacation," to make your vacation affordable.

=================================================

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT concerning Beth, our travel agent:

Beth is pleased to announce that the travel agency with which she is affiliated has received Disney's elite EarMarked agency designation. The program is Disney's way of recognizing those agencies which not only sell a high volume of Disney product, but also make a contractual commitment to Disney in many areas including agent education. Agents must "earn their ears" by completing the intense College of Disney Knowledge training program to become Certified Disney Destination Specialists. In exchange, Disney offers tools and services to the agents that those in other agencies don't have access to.

Beth explains that the partnership, one that Disney forms with only a tiny percentage of travel agencies, not only makes it easier for her and her team to design Disney vacations to match client expectations, but also to deliver the best possible experience given that the agency's EarMarked status earns them special attention. "Sometimes we need a little extra pixie dust to make sure a client gets the magical vacation they are hoping for. Being EarMarked tells Disney that it's well worth their time and effort to help us out in that regard when we need it." Only agencies that have become EarMarked can use the term and logo Authorized Disney Vacation Planner.

Note from John: Beth's bookings account for about 95% of the Disney business that the agency does. I'll bring you more information about cool new things Beth can do to help you plan, etc., as details become available.

Walt Disney World Resort lands on Google Earth: the Next Best Thing to Being There

Walt Disney World Resort in 3D takes vacation planning to new heights as the most detailed 3D rendering within Google Earth to date

Burbank, Calif. - Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is harnessing the power of Google EarthTM to build an interactive, three-dimensional tour of Walt Disney World Resort that brings you one step closer to a true park experience. With direct links to Disney’s online travel-planning tools, Walt Disney World Resort in 3D will re-invent how people plan and book vacations.

Beginning today, Disney guests can use Google Earth, a program which offers a 3D digital model of the world, to virtually tour Walt Disney World’s four theme parks, as well as its 22 hotels and resorts. An overview of Walt Disney World Resort in 3D, along with instructions on how to get started, can be found at www.disneyworld.com/3dparks. Existing Google Earth 4.3 users can see Walt Disney World Resort in 3D by enabling the "Gallery" folder within Google Earth, or by selecting any of the 3D buildings within the resort.

"You know the phrase ‘next best thing to being there’? Walt Disney World Resort in 3D is going to deliver on that," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "Guests and travel planners can now explore our world with just a few clicks of a mouse, and they can book vacations while being immersed in what the destination has to offer."

Disney’s digital mapping project, Walt Disney World Resort in 3D, will become the ultimate online travel guide for Walt Disney World Resort, integrating the Google Earth 3D experience with the planning features of Disney.com. Whether guests book through the Disney reservation center, a travel agent or online, nearly nine out of ten Walt Disney World guests use the internet to plan their vacations and Walt Disney World Resort in 3D provides the latest technology available to enhance that experience. From Google Earth, guests and travel planners can click on images of their favorite attractions and hotels to purchase tickets, make reservations, and map out the vacation that is right for their families - in 3D and with the click of a mouse. Disneyworld.com visitors can view videos and other information about viewing Walt Disney World in 3D at www.disneyworld.com/3dparks.

The depth and vivid detail of Walt Disney World Resort in 3D project makes this a unique, truly immersive experience within Google Earth. Visitors begin their virtual tour of Disney World with a stratospheric view of the globe, a starting point familiar to anyone who has ever used Google Earth. A skydive takes visitors past the flatlands of Florida to a view of the Seven Seas Lagoon in the Magic Kingdom. Guests can then fly through the streets and explore in and around the hotels and resorts, down Main Street to Cinderella Castle, from the heights of The Tower of Terror to base of the Tree of Life. To enter the virtual park:

* Download Google Earth 4.3 by visiting www.disneyworld.com/3dparks.
* Launch Google Earth and search for 'Disney World'
* Click the Mickey Ears to open an info window.
* In the info window, click "Show Disney World in 3D." Now explore!

"This is the most detailed 3D rendering undertaken within Google Earth to date," continued Rasulo. "The work done here will provide a professional counterpart to the wealth of Disney images and 3D models from around the world contributed by thousands of volunteers. The difference Walt Disney World Resort in 3D provides is one of scope and interaction."

During the project’s first phase, eight photographers worked for 10 days to shoot all the visible surfaces of Walt Disney World, including every building façade. A total 100,000 photos were taken in all; these became the start for some 1,500 3D models that populate the virtual tour. Walt Disney World Resort in 3D creates a new level of usability for vacation planners and makes detailed information about one of the world’s foremost destinations available to Google Earth’s 350 million users, furthering the Google Earth team’s goal of recreating the world as it really is. Disneyland Resort Welcomes Performers From Seoul, Korea, For The 2008 Cultural Arts Showcase June 9-15

The beauty of Korean culture will charm and entertain guests at the Disneyland Resort for one week this June as the Hi-Seoul Art Troupe from Seoul, Korea presents traditional and modern Korean music and dance.

Songs, colorful fans, traditional Korean musical instruments and graceful choreography make up the all-new experience being presented in nine daily shows, performed from 10:45 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. at the Pacific Wharf International Stage at Disney’s California Adventure Park. The elegant event features performances rich in cultural tradition, such as Hwa Gwan Mu (Flower Crown Dance), Buchae-Chum (Fan Dance), Pan Gut, Samulnori (Sitting Pan Gut) and Beat Circle.

During the Year of the Mouse, Disneyland Resort is proud to offer the stage to Hi-Seoul Art Troupe, an organization that seeks to convey the beauty of Korean culture to Koreans and audiences around the world. The 2008 Performing Arts Showcase will be Hi-Seoul Art Troupe’s first-ever performance at the Disneyland Resort and its only tour stop in the United States in 2008. All guests who visit Disney’s California Adventure Park June 9 through June 15 will enjoy these shows as part of the regular Park admission.

Performed during the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Hwa Gwan Mu (Floral Crown Dance) originated as a royal court dance and became one of Korea’s representative folk dances that celebrate peace and prosperity. Dancers wear traditional costumes, including a floral crown (Hwa Gwan) and Hansam, which are long sleeves that cover the dancers’ hands. The Hansam and wide sleeves of the costume produce dramatic dance movements that represent the honor and grace of traditional Korean dance.

Buchae-Chum, an example of modern Korean dance, features beautiful choreography and graceful performers in Hanbok (traditional Korean clothes) and Dang-Eui (traditional ceremonial dress). The performers glide around the stage waving colorful fans decorated with flowers and feathers.

Pan Gut combines music, dance and traditional Korean games to express the joy and sorrow of hard work. Performances of Pan-Gut feature rhythmic drumming and the use of specially designed headpieces, which are decorated with long ribbons and are spun in dramatic fashion.

Samulnori involves traditional percussion music that originated in farming villages. Salmulnori is always performed with four traditional Korean musical instruments: Quangari (small gong), Jing (larger gong), Jang-gu (hourglass-shaped drum), and buk (frame drum).

The Hi-Seoul Art Troupe is an organization that aims to preserve and revive traditional Korean arts. The group consists of dance and instrumental music teams that showcase different genres of traditional Korean arts, ranging from royal court dance to traditional farm music. The Hi-Seoul Art Troupe also aims to further develop and revitalize traditional Korean arts through new repertories that combine newly composed traditional Korean music, dance and percussion music to integrate the beauty and elegance of both traditional and modern Korean culture.
