Jenn writes about last week's note about the florist serving Walt Disney World:

"Hi John and Beth!!

Just wanted to add a note about the florist article you mentioned. They will deliver to WDW parks. We have celebrated many special occasions @ WDW in the last 10 years, from B-days to recovering from brain surgeries, to hitting the 5 year mark on a serious illness-marking a great time to celebrate being out of the woods. We have had the candy cake delivered to Le Cellier, and flowers delivered to Tutto's Italiano in Italy; they will accommodate everything. Just wanted to let you and everyone else know. As long as you have a reservation later in the day, say after 2 or 3 ish, like their delivery time, they can get it there, and the restaurant will hold it for you. Very nice to have at the table waiting for the guest of honor!!!"

Off the Beaten Path - Discover the Undiscovered at Walt Disney World Resort

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - High-flying elephants and spinning teacups usually take center stage when a guest is thinking of Walt Disney World Resort. But did you know that 9-pound lemons flourish at The Land pavilion at Epcot, or that sunset safaris explore Africa-inspired savannas in the middle of Florida? Guests who take a second - or third - glance will come across countless undiscovered gems within the 40-square-mile Vacation Kingdom. Here’s a sample of "the unexpected":

Experiences:

Find treasure at The Pirates League at Magic Kingdom - This buccaneer experience in Adventureland features makeovers that turn guests ages 3 and up into savvy swashbucklers. Guests who want to join Captain Jack’s motley crew will receive a pirate identity, be transformed into a pirate by a sea-sailing Pirate Master, gain access to a secret treasure room and unlock clues to more pirate encounters within Adventureland. All three packages include a sword and sheath, earring and eye patch, temporary tattoo, exclusive pirate coin necklace, map case folder, a personalized pirate oath and a pirate portrait. Packages start at $49.95 plus tax (407/WDW-CREW).

Take a spin on a Segway Personal Transporter - The Segway PT, originally the "Human Transporter" first displayed to the public at Epcot Innoventions in 2002, is the world’s first self-balancing personal transporter that uses advanced technology, gyroscopes and tilt sensors to emulate human balance. Guests can put these high-tech machines to the test in two tours offered most days at Epcot and also at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

* Around the World at Epcot is a two-hour tour that allows guests to operate the device throughout World Showcase before the area opens to park guests ($99/person not including tax; tours are daily at 7:45, 8:30,9 and 9:30 a.m.).
* Simply Segway is a one-hour program that gives guests a product overview, training and indoor riding time at Innoventions ($35/person not including tax; daily at 11:30 a.m.). For both programs, class size is limited to 10 guests (407/WDW-TOUR).
* The Wilderness Back Trail Adventure at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort is a two-hour beginner’s tour that allows guests to experience the outdoors first-hand on a Segway X2 Personal Transporter. The program also includes a product overview and training ($90/person not including tax; tours are Tuesday-Saturday 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.).

Harmony Barber Shop a cut above the rest - Sit back in the barber’s chair and experience a good old-fashioned haircut at Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, U.S.A. in Magic Kingdom. Located near the Emporium and with a signature candy-striped pole outside, the shop transports guests to a simpler time when barbershop quartets entertained and getting a haircut was a real treat. "First Haircuts," the establishment’s specialty, treats young’uns to pixie dust, bubbles, Mickey Mouse stickers and an extra-special "My 1st Haircut" set of Mouse Ears. Haircuts are $18 for "Baby’s First Haircut;" $15 for children; $19 for adults; first-come, first-serve.

Sunset Safari at Disney’s Kingdom Lodge offers up-close encounters with exotic creatures - Guests staying at the lodge can enter a serene animal reserve for an up-close encounter on the Wanyama Safari. Just before sunset seven nights a week, guests board a specially designed vehicle that explores the resort’s three savannas. Guests get picture-perfect views of more than 200 mammals and exotic birds and then partake in a savory South African feast at the resort’s signature restaurant, Jiko-The Cooking Place. The 3 ½-hour experience, including dinner, is $170. For reservations at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, call 407/W-DISNEY.

The Land at Epcot mixes science and entertainment to grow one-of-a-kind plants - Behind the brightly colored, mosaic façade of The Land pavilion at Epcot sits offices where greenhouse magic takes place. "Horti-tainment," a mix of horticulture and entertainment, creates some of the most visually interesting fruits and vegetables found under one roof anywhere in the world. Among the highlights: a world-record harvest from a single tomato vine (see below); Mickey Mouse-shaped cucumbers, watermelons and pumpkins; 9-pound lemons, and more.

‘Tomato Tree’ sets record with 32,000 tomatoes - The Tomato Tree at The Land pavilion at Epcot has blossomed into a record-setting plant. The tree was recognized as an official Guinness World Record Holder, with a one-year harvest of more than 32,000 tomatoes and a total weight of 1,151 pounds. Guests can spot the tree during the pavilion’s Living with the Land boat ride.

Take the ultimate divein a 6-million-gallon indoor aquarium with more than 65 species of marine life, including sharks, turtles, eagle rays and diverse tropical fish. DiveQuest at Epcot offers guaranteed calm seas, no current, unlimited visibility, incredible marine life and bright coral structures. Additionally, you become part of the show. Your family members and friends (with Epcot admission) can view your dive through any of the 56 giant acrylic windows at The Seas with Nemo & Friends. Guest must be at least 10 years of age and must provide proof of SCUBA certification to participate. Price of $175/person (not including tax) includes a limited edition T-shirt, refreshments, dive certificate and a dive log stamp. Call 407/WDW-TOUR for information.

Build your own roller coaster at the DisneyQuest CyberSpace Mountain attraction - Bill Nye the Coaster Guy walks guests through the design process where they choose from three different speeds, three world settings (fire, ice or outer space) and an infinite number of track combinations. The roller coaster of your dreams (or nightmares!) can do flips, corkscrews and even wild maneuvers such as a loop that flies off the tracks. A digital card tracks guests’ personal coasters and the simulator re-creates it both visually and physically. Downtown Disney guests must be 51" to ride, 407/W-DISNEY for more information.

Learn to hula dance at Disney’s Polynesian Resort, where complimentary classes take place most days in the resort’s lobby. Auntie Kaui, a hula dancer and instructor with 50 years experience, leads most of the classes offered Monday through Saturday at 3:45 p.m., and Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. until noon. Weekday classes are geared toward the younger set, with leis and grass skirts aplenty, while the Saturday morning lessons encourage guests of all ages to do the hula shake. And whether guests stay for five minutes or the full two-hour Saturday classes, they’ll learn a variety of chants and dances from such tropical locales as Hawaii, Tahiti and more.

The Archery Experience at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground - Whether novice or expert marksman, an archery guide offers training and tips on how to hit the bulls-eye. Open to resort guests (ages 6 and up) and non-guests alike, the 90-minute experience costs $25 (plus tax) per person, includes equipment and instruction and can be booked up to 180 days in advance by calling 407/939-7529. Offered Thursday, Friday and Saturday afternoons.

Merchandise & Dining:

New, stylish boutique at Downtown Disney is sure to turn heads - Tren-D, the newest retail shop at Downtown Disney Marketplace, is packed full of retro, urban-inspired merchandise. With its designer flair and eclectic offerings, the specialty store is a one-of-a-kind destination for fashion-conscious shoppers seeking trendy apparel and novel accessories. Offerings include organic loungewear, embroidered handbags, jeweled sunglasses and hip accessories set among stylish art and unique furnishings. The eclectic environment offers a raw and unfinished feel with jeweled chandeliers, distinct fixtures and mod furnishings. Designers such as Kidada Jones, Tarina Tarantino and Roxy showcase their artistry - blending it with Disney-inspired creations.

New, fashionable Mickey Mouse earhats "all the rage" - Trendsetters and fashion gurus can strut their stuff with new Mickey Mouse earhats that come in a variety of vibrant colors and styles to suit guests of all ages. In addition to traditional earhats, there are specially designed ears with character-specific themes. Gal versions don pink veils, jeweled princess crowns or wild cheetah prints. For the boys, pirate scarves and hoop earrings adorn the headgear, plus Stitch-themed offerings and more. And with the Create Your Own Ears option, guests can custom design their own pair. The Mickey Mouse earhats are available in limited quantities at select locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort starting at $11.95.

Creative minds are put to good use at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace, where kids can build and customize toys in five uniquely themed rooms. The Build Your Own Mr. Potato Head display has customizable options including Mickey Mouse ears, a sorcerer’s hat and a teacup vehicle from Disney’s Mad Tea Party attraction. Guests can also enjoy the Build Your Own Lightsaber display, which is a step-by-step "Star Wars" merchandise experience that invites guests to build custom lightsabers with dozens of unique possibilities. It’s the ultimate toy-store shopping experience where kids and families can play and create together.

Walt Disney World guests are put right inside their own fairy tale thanks to the special offerings of the Walt Disney World Florist. From popping the question to a birthday or anniversary to "just because," the choices are endless. Surprise moments can be created during a Disney dining experience. A park-goer can return to a guestroom strewn with rose petals. Or a lover can be surprised, during a carriage ride, with a glass slipper - nestled on a pillow made of flowers, ribbons and pearls. Guests can visit www.disneyflorist.com or call 407/827-3505.

In World Showcase, young guests can create their own Epcot souvenirs at the park’s Kidcot Funstops. Craftsmen teach the budding artisans how to create one-of-a-kind masks or musical instruments using their own magical touch. Parents and children alike will love to "travel the world" and discover these activity-filled craft areas at each of the pavilions.

Epcot is a World Showcase for art lovers - Epcot World Showcase has been a "showplace" of nations since its grand opening in 1982. But beyond the pagodas in Japan and the longboats in Norway lies a whole other world: treating art lovers to museum-quality galleries. Current exhibitions are located at Norway, China, Japan, Morocco, The American Adventure and Mexico. Admission to the exhibitions is included with general park admission.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge houses a diverse collection of African art sure to impress amateurs and aficionados alike. Sculptures and carvings throughout the resort tell stories that help familiarize guests with Africa and its diverse countries and regions. Among the art is the 16-foot-tall Igbo Ijele mask, a piece created and exported by the Igbo people of Nigeria specifically for use in the lodge.

Guests can slurp a sandwich at the 50s Prime Time Café at Disney’s Hollywood Studios where peanut butter and jelly take yummy milkshake form. At this fabulous 1950s kitchenette, the servers holler for guests to take their seats among Formica tables, pull-down lamps and knickknacks, checking in periodically to make sure each person eats their veggies and cleans their plate. Wash it down with a PB&J shake.

A popular place to take a break at Epcot is Club Cool, where guests can savor complimentary samples of Coca-Cola products from countries around the world including China, Israel, Italy and Costa Rica.

Coca-Cola products are available for purchase, including Frozen Coke, Style My Coke (contour bottle wrappers) and an array of merchandise.

The Dole Whip, sold at Aloha Isle in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom, combines pineapple soft serve in a delectable swirl with either vanilla or chocolate ice cream. The tasty, fruit-flavored treat can also be ordered with pineapple chunks or as a dole whip float, all sinfully sweet for a mid-day cool-down, and each for $5 or less.

For more information about Walt Disney World Resort, guests can visit www.disneyworld.com or phone 407/824-4321. (Source: Press release, 01/22/10)

Beth, our travel agent, writes about introducing your child to the "big kid" rides and dealing with lines at Walt Disney World:

Lines, Line and More Lines

"So, it’s cold and rainy and the day before Thanksgiving, but we’re determined that my daughter will enjoy her birthday and we enter Disney’s Hollywood Studios around 2:00 in the afternoon. First stop, Tower of Terror. My daughter had never done it and wasn’t sure she wanted to. Luckily for her, they were all out of Fast Passes for the day, and the posted wait time was 75 minutes. We moved on.

Next stop: Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Again, no more Fast Passes, but the line didn’t LOOK as long as the posted 65 minute wait time so we joined the standby line. Turns out it was every bit that long and then some. Now, this was another one my daughter had never done. She loves the Barnstormer in Magic Kingdom and we told her that going for a 'big kid' ride for the first time was a great way to kick off her 12th year of life. You know, facing your fears and doing something you’ve really wanted to do despite those fears. She cried. Then she begged not to do it. I was feeling guilty about potentially ruining her birthday. So we called her best friend (a fearless child) on the cell phone.

God bless Kaitlyn who spent ten minutes pumping my daughter up for the impending ride. The little girl in front of us (and her parents) also worked on her, so by the time we got to the boarding area my daughter had stopped crying and had come to the realization that she was going to do this whether she wanted to or not. Now I personally have a severe problem with motion sickness and the mere thought of a coaster makes me barfy, so as by daughter and my (very brave) boyfriend climbed into their seats I took the chicken exit and waited.

A few minutes later their ride was over and their car pulled up right in front of me. My daughter looked at me, then smiled bigger than I’ve seen her smile in years. She admitted that her eyes were closed most of the time, so she was unaware of the inversions she’d been put through. She loved it. Not enough to want to get right back on, but she’ll do it again - and she was clearly so proud of herself that it was worth every minute in line.

So, off to have more fun. Don’t waste your time on the so-called ice cream outside R’n’R Coaster… It’s yucky and not worth your money or your snack credits. We grabbed Fast Passes to Voyage of the Little Mermaid then spent about 30 minutes doing the One Man’s Dream exhibit and movie. (After subjecting my boyfriend to five days of Disney travel agent conference, he’s now in wonder of the man that dreamed it all up.)

Then, silly us, we thought we’d jump on Toy Story Mania, another one my daughter hadn’t done. We couldn’t get more Fast Passes, so we just got in the standby line. I will never, ever again make that mistake. The sign said the wait was 40 minutes. We waited one hour and 55 minutes. Seriously! Us and a few hundred others who were as stupid as we were. The Fast Pass people were all accommodated immediately, and there was a never-ending stream of them. By the time we got in we’d missed our showing of Little Mermaid. (Fortunately, Disney will accept Fast Passes even after the stated return window so don’t throw them out.)

Now we’re cold and wet and frustrated and more than a tad irritated - both at Disney for allowing lines to become so insanely long (Walt would be horrified) and at ourselves for being dumb enough to stand in a line that long. We took my daughter to see the Osborne Lights then shared a little pizza and a salad at Pizza Planet before returning to catch the Little Mermaid show. We then had to run all over the park looking for a pin to commemorate Emily’s first ride on Rock’n’Roller Coaster.

Our long wait for Toy Story Mania had eliminated the possibility of seeing Fantasmic and every live show in the park. We stopped at the popcorn stand on Hollywood Blvd and discovered the hard way that the popcorn that smells so good really isn’t. In fact, it’s not even warm. It was getting late and the park was closing soon so we started our trek back to the hotel to have birthday cake and faux champagne.

Lessons:

* Sometimes you need to push your kids to cross the fear barrier. If you’re lucky, they’ll thank you for it later.

* Ask if the ice cream is real ice cream and if the popcorn is warm BEFORE you buy if the answers make a difference to you.

* If you’re at the back of a line that seems impossibly long and is barely moving, stay no more than 10-15 minutes to verify your suspicions, then get out of line and do something else. Life’s too short to spend two hours waiting for ANY attraction.

* Get into parks as early as humanly possible if you hope to get a lot accomplished. If you arrive after lunch time then know in advance that you probably won’t check many things off your list - especially if you are after those 'E ticket' rides.

* Even a rainy, cold day with long lines can make for a good birthday experience. After all, a day at Disney World beats pretty much all the other options."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about HAWTHORN SUITES:

"If you’ve been an Affordable Disney reader for a few years, have used me to plan your Disney trip, and have chosen to do an offsite hotel then chances are you’ve heard me sing the praises of Hawthorn Suites on Palm Parkway. I’ve done so based on a tour I once took of the property. (I rarely recommend places that I haven’t seen personally.)

Last month was my daughter’s 12th birthday and she wanted to go to Disney World. We had to be at my father’s place in Sarasota for Thanksgiving anyway, so we took her to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This was a big-time budget trip since I’d just spent five days at Disney the week before for a conference. Conveniently, my 'significant other' and I still had valid park tickets from that trip, and my daughter got her free birthday ticket. We dined by grazing rather than doing big, sit-down meals and found the associated costs of doing so were quite reasonable. So that just left us with needing a hotel for one night.

Now, as a travel agent, I usually have access to some pretty decent rates… but when booking at the last minute, and needing the night before Thanksgiving in a major Florida resort destination, not so much. I decided this was the perfect chance for me to actually try out Hawthorn Suites myself and I booked it at the AAA rate of $89.

We arrived right around lunch time - several hours before check-in time - but they gave us the option of waiting for a king room to be cleaned or taking a room with two queen beds. We took what was ready. The suite was smaller than I remembered, but clean and well-maintained (as was the rest of the hotel).

I was responsible for some veggie dishes for Thanksgiving dinner, so I had to make them prior to leaving and haul them all the way to Orlando and toss them in our room frig on arrival. (Good thing these suites have full-sized refrigerators!) We also had plenty of room in the semi-fully-equipped kitchen to store a small birthday cake, some bananas, several bottles of water, a bag of chips, and my bottle of non-alcoholic champagne. (What’s a birthday party for a 12-year-old without that?!)

It was a rather cold, rainy day so we didn’t get to use the pool or sip umbrella drinks under the tiki hut - nor did we return that evening for the Manager’s reception and dinner. Still, the idea that they even HAVE a reception and light dinner is a nice one. (It’s held several nights a week.)

We did stick our heads into the fitness center and the arcade, though. Didn’t use them, but we looked. Two thumbs up. The drive over to Downtown Disney was maybe five minutes at most. It took longer to find a parking space than it did to get over there. We then jumped on the first bus headed toward the Studios. In our case, it was a bus to the Swan and Dolphin resorts. (Downtown Disney buses don’t go direct to theme parks.) We got off at the Swan and walked over to the Studios, a 10-minute excursion if you move along at a decent pace. At the end of our day, we jumped on a bus to Caribbean Beach Resort, got off at the first stop, and waited maybe five minutes for a bus to Downtown Disney where we hunted down our car and drove back to the hotel.

In the morning, we enjoyed a complimentary breakfast buffet in a sunny area off the main lobby. Admittedly, it wasn’t as extensive as some I’ve seen at similar hotels, but they did offer fruit, eggs, bacon, sausage, assorted breads and pastries, etc. It was more than adequate, and better than going to McDonald’s.

Summary: Hawthorn Suites Palm Parkway is in a wonderful, convenient location and you get a lot for your money. You can sleep six in a suite (although you’d drive each other nuts after a few days) and breakfast is included. The kitchen has a sink, microwave, full frig, and a two-plate cooktop. No oven, though, and the kitchen equipment is just enough to get by. With a pool, half-court basketball, fitness center and small arcade there are enough amenities to suit most families. So I will continue to whole-heartedly recommend this location for those that need to stay off Disney property. However, getting to and from the parks when it can’t work around the free hotel shuttle times is still a major hassle so if there’s any way at all that you can afford a Disney-owned resort then it’s still the better choice."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Disneyland's Club 33:

In the last week or so, two people have mentioned Club 33 to me - one who actually got to dine there and another who will be having her wedding rehearsal dinner there next summer. It occurs to me that there are probably a lot of people who don’t even know what Club 33 is, so I thought I’d toss out this bit of trivia…

The next time you’re in Disneyland, head over towards the Blue Bayou restaurant in New Orleans Square. Look for 33 Royal Street. While the door may look like any other, it’s one of the most difficult doors to get through you’ll ever come across. Well, actually, if you take the 'Footsteps' tour, you’ll get in - and even see the inside of the exquisite elevator - but that’s as far as you can go unless you know someone. A very important someone!

The story goes that Walt really liked the private VIP clubs he came across while at the World’s Fair so he decided Disneyland should have one as well. Walt went all out on this project; the club is filled with fine antiques and pieces from famous movie sets. I hear the food is pretty amazing, too! And for the price, it ought to be. Dinner at the club will set you back about $75 per person, and that’s before tax and gratuity and without wine. The lunch buffet is rumored to be equally yummy and less pricey.

Sadly, most of us will never know for sure because this is a super-exclusive club. Membership is limited to roughly 400 people, and my understanding is that they are no longer taking a waiting list. You’ll often see the wait time to join listed at about 14 years, but it seems that 3-4 years is more the norm. There are several types of membership. For us mere mortals, the individual membership is (I think) $7,500 to join and then $2,500 annually. This gets you and up to nine guests access to dining at the club as well as admission to the parks. (Members can come hang out at the club, but your guests MUST dine there in order to have the free park admission. Otherwise, you’ll be billed for their admission tickets.)

Walt died before Club 33 ever opened, but I think he’d be pleased with the way it turned out. If you’re still curious, check out Wikipedia and/or Snopes for more details and additional links. And if you’re a member of Club 33, I’d be more than happy to join you for a meal ANY TIME!"

Beth writes about BACKSTAGE TOURS at Walt Disney World:

"Regular readers know that I attended a travel agent conference at Disney World recently. One of the coolest things they did for us was give us the opportunity to see some backstage areas that are off limits to regular guests. I did two of these tours.

The first was a tour that took us to Central Shops, located in a remote part of the property beyond the Magic Kingdom. This is where new things are created and existing things are refurbished. Anything broken or chipped gets sent here to be fixed up. We saw a flying elephant from the Dumbo attraction, a log from Splash Mountain, a few carousel horses, and a strange assortment of other items that you may or may not recognize when taken from their usual surroundings. Each gets lovingly restored to 'stage ready' status by Disney’s many craftsmen and artists.

When animatronics are ready to go on stage (meaning, into the park where they’ll be seen by guests) they must first pass numerous tests. There’s actually an area where these robot-like figures get turned on and left for DAYS at a time to be sure they’ll hold up. Central Shops also does some creating for other Disney theme parks, the Disney ships, and just about anything else they’re asked to tackle - from giant Christmas trees to miles of tracks to dozens of fiberglass magic carpets. We were there late in the afternoon and it was a little disappointing to not see all that many people working, but when the place is in full swing it must be almost surreal.

The other tour took us to three different places. The first was a warehouse (near Central Shops) where all the holiday decorations are stored. In this case, most of them were gone because the parks, resorts and ships were already nearly completely decorated. There was enough left to give us the idea, though. The aisles have big signs (like a grocery store) to tell you what’s stored there. Then the shelves are labeled so you know what goes into each section. Finally, the storage containers are carefully labeled with the contents. Many also have photos on the ends of the boxes to show what the décor looks like when done (which must be a HUGE help to those hanging the stuff). HINT: The caps of ornaments are hot-glued onto the ornament, and then they’re hung with wire so that they don’t fall off the tree, wreath, or garland. Smart, huh?!

One of the most interesting things was to see the Main Street Christmas tree in pieces. That baby is HUGE! Disney fans know that the annual parade you see on Christmas Day is actually taped over several days in early December. Regis and Kelly sit on the balcony at the train station so that the camera shot over their shoulders is of the length of Main Street with the castle in the background. Years ago, they assembled the tree near the castle, then after shooting they had to remove all the garland across Main Street and relocate the tree at the foot of Main Street where it belongs. That was a big job, though, so now the tree isn’t assembled until after shooting ends. As a result, we got to see the thing in pieces. Mickey’s elves were busy making new 'popcorn' for its giant strings of the stuff. Very fun to see!

Our next stop was the most fun… The utilidor system under the Magic Kingdom. We were restricted to the area right under Main Street, but that was OK. You know when you walk past that bakery and it always smells so good that you can’t resist? Well, that’s the plan. They actually have a machine under the street that pumps out the scent of fresh baked goods. Really!! And you know how the cast members are required to trade pins with you if you ask? Well, there’s a station down below where they take all those yucky pins you give them and trade them in for the good stuff, some of which you can ONLY get from cast members!

Here’s another fun tidbit… There are cast members who replace filled garbage cans with empty plastic containers, then take the full ones to stations at convenient locations throughout the Magic Kingdom. The trash is emptied into vacuum tubes which whisk it away to a central area for sorting (they recycle!) and disposal. Occasionally, they have to dump rocks into the system to clean all the gunk out of the tubes. Anyway, the whole 'underworld' of the Magic Kingdom is really fascinating.

Finally, we stopped at one of several laundry facilities. The one we saw handles towels and sheets. It’s truly an automated wonder. Parades of laundry bags hanging from ceiling tracks move around the room, dumping laundry that magically gets sorted and cleaned and folded before being loaded back onto special carts (called metros) and sent back to the resorts. Along the way, TV remotes and stuffed animals that got wrapped into the bedding are collected and (hopefully) redirected back to the appropriate places and people. Factoid: Housekeeping folks were griping about how hard moving the metros full of linens could be when you had to go uphill, around tight corners, etc. Disney Imagineers re-designed the metros to be somewhat self-propelled to make maneuvering them easier. The design was patented and is now in use all over the world.

In summary, I would highly recommend that anyone who is truly a lover of all things Disney try some of the backstage tours that are available. They can be arranged by calling 1-407-WDW-TOUR. Be aware that some tours require park admission and some have minimum age requirements. Also, some are rather lengthy, even including meals, so you can lose a bunch of time you’d otherwise maybe be spending in the parks. For those that have visited the parks many times, though, the tours can really provide a very unique perspective."

Universal Orlando Resort Celebrates 15 Years Of Beads, Bands And Good Times With Mardi Gras 2010

Celebration Includes Authentic Mardi Gras Parade and Cuisine, Along with Live Performances by Acts Such as Aretha Franklin, 3 Doors Down and Miranda Lambert

On February 6, Universal Orlando Resort will kick off its 15th year of Mardi Gras – the biggest and most authentic Mardi Gras celebration outside of New Orleans. Guests will experience the spirit of Bourbon St. in the heart of Universal Studios, with festivities including live concerts by artists like Flo Rida, Sheryl Crow and Chicago, authentic Cajun cuisine, a spectacular parade and tons of beads.

With a combined total of more than half a billion records sold worldwide, this year’s Mardi Gras lineup features an eclectic mix of 13 of the biggest names in music. From hip-hop to pop, country to rock, and R&B to disco, there will be something for everyone. Along with Flo Rida, Sheryl Crow and Chicago, Mardi Gras guests will enjoy live performances by headliners like “The Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin, country sensation Dierks Bentley, hip-hop artist Akon, multi-platinum selling rock band 3 Doors Down and the No. 1 selling American band of all time, Beach Boys.

In addition to seeing top-name talent perform on the main stage, guests can also visit Universal’s very own “French Quarter” – a replica of the New Orleans’ famed district – and groove to the authentic bayou sounds of bands directly from New Orleans.

To commemorate this special year, guests will enjoy a heritage-themed Mardi Gras parade featuring new colorful renditions of floats from past year’s events. Universal worked with New Orleans-based Blaine Kern Artists, Inc. to incorporate new elements into some of the most memorable floats in the event’s history. The twelve vibrant floats will cruise the streets of Universal Studios during the festivities, filled with riders tossing beads by the handful to excited park guests.

Guests will also enjoy the aroma and taste of authentic Cajun cuisine – such as jambalaya, gumbo, beignets and king cake – along with hundreds of costumed characters and stilt walkers dancing and mingling in the streets. Party-goers will also enjoy Universal Studios’ most popular attractions, including the all-new Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit – a radically-innovative roller coaster that combines hit music, first-ever maneuvers and highly-sophisticated audio and video for a one-of-a-kind ride experience.

Beth, our travel agent, recently returned from Walt Disney World. She writes about Dining around the World:

"The majority of our meals were covered by conference catering, but we did get to munch at a few other places…

Beaches & Cream

Man, I just love this place. I hate the wait (reservations not accepted), it’s usually noisy, and it’s a bit overpriced, but I still love it. We shared a veggie burger and substituted onion rings for the fries ($1 fee to do so). Yum on both counts - and the server was happy to serve the meal divided onto two plates for us. The sundaes are large (and to die for), so you could use one table service meal credit to do as we did (divide the meal) and both be satisfied. Big eaters won’t want to share, though. Beware: a separate side order of onion rings is HUGE! Beaches & Cream is located at the Beach Club near the pool.

San Angel Inn

Talk about disappointing. First, they didn’t have our reservation. I know, I always tell all of you to take your reservation numbers with you - and I did have mine... back in my suitcase in the room. Despite the missing reservation, they did let us in. And then we waited - and waited. It was about ten minutes before we were finally greeted and got our drinks and our chips with salsa (both excellent).

I was once again dining with a vegetarian and I’m not big on meat myself, so we were having some trouble finding something to eat. The menu is very limited, and none of the usual burritos, etc. are on there. The fine print at the bottom said they’d try to work with special diets, though, so when our server returned we asked if we could do a burrito with beans and cheese, and another entrée without the steak.

No on both counts… but they did offer a vegetarian menu. Yea! Again, disappointment, though. There were only two things on it: a salad, and a tortilla with black beans and grilled veggies. Well, I figured that tortilla was sort of like a flat burrito so I went that way. My companion managed to talk them into doing the Filete Motuleno minus the beef, and for a reduced price of $18 (same as mine). Both were good - although my companions dish was spicy to the point of burning lips and teary eyes so be sure to request it mild if killer spicy isn’t your thing. The thing is, while the atmosphere is lovely and the food is tasty and authentic, it’s very pricey considering what you’re eating. Definitely use a dining credit if you go, and be sure to request a table near the river if they have one. It would be worth waiting just a few extra minutes for one with that nice view.

Cookes of Dublin

Located in Downtown Disney, this is the counter service side of Raglan Road, the Irish restaurant (which I love, by the way). What caught our eye was the 'double dipped' onion rings. We’ll do anything for a good onion ring, and these babies were awesome! You pay $4 for a portion large enough to share with a friend. They’re made to order, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and very unique. Two thumbs up. We also tried the chips (fries) and found them to be equally yummy. Again, crispy on the outside, like mashed potatoes on the inside, and made to order. We got to watch other orders going out as well, and they all looked delicious, from the batter-dipped fish to the Dublin-style pies to the fried candy bars. (Yes, really. As if they weren’t unhealthy enough to start with!) Can’t wait to get back to this place and try some more things. Horrible for the diet, but otherwise heavenly.

Wetzel’s Pretzels

If you’ve never had them, they’re delicious. Wait a few minutes to get them fresh right from the oven if you can. There are two locations in Downtown Disney, one across from the giant Disney store, and a much larger one next to the Characters in Flight balloon in the West End section. They’re about the best pretzels around from this sort of place, but for a pretzel and lemonade you’ll spend over $7, so it’s more of a splurge than at your local shopping mall.

Cosmic Ray’s

This is one of the few places open in the Magic Kingdom during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, so it’s a good one to be aware of….. plus, they have the free hot chocolate and cookies there that party goers get, so it’s convenient. We shared another veggie burger and some fries. Average on both counts. What I love, though, is the free topping bar. We loaded up on sauteed mushrooms, onions, and cheese sauce. And THAT’S why I say this is the best place to get a burger, veggie or otherwise.

Cantina de San Angel

Those chips were so good from our dinner a few nights earlier we thought we’d see if they were the same at the counter service place outside the Mexican pavilion at Epcot. Again dining with my vegetarian friend, the idea was to split an order of nachos without the beef, but alas, when I heard the special order would take ten minutes (after I’d already been waiting in line at least 15 minutes) I had to think fast. I ordered two children’s grilled cheese quesadilla meals which come with chips, cheese sauce, carrots and a drink for $4.99 each. Bargain! The splurge was a foot-long churro which was truly not worth the $3.25 price tag. So order the kid meal then stroll over to France for a pastry instead. By the way, this is the place I always suggest to families trying to stretch their counter service credits..… a burrito meal can be shared and should be enough for two adults that don’t eat much, two kids, or an adult and child. You won’t be stuffed, but you’ll be good until dinner time."
=================================================
Beth also comments on the gratuity charges on your Disney Visa Rewards card or gift card:

"Don’t let it confuse you

So you’re saving up your Disney Visa rewards points forever and you finally get to transfer them over to your rewards card for your big trip to see The Mouse. You know you have, say, $50 on there, and you give the card to your server at lunch to cover your $16 tab plus $3 tip. You sign the charge, stuff the receipt in your pocket and away you go. Later that day, you glance at the receipt (the only one you got) and it shows a reward card balance of $34. Great, you think, I have just enough to buy this shirt for $32 plus tax. Your cashier asks if you have another $2.92. Huh?? What’s up with that?!

Well, what’s up is, when you use that rewards card to pay for meals, the gratuity is run separately and you probably will not get a second receipt showing the correct balance on your card. Your receipt will be for the first charge run (the meal and tax). You’ll need to make a note to yourself that the gratuity was deducted after that. Gift cards work the same way. The process makes it VERY hard to accurately track your balance."
