Lisa writes:

"Hi John,

As we are preparing for our Jan 09 visit to WDW I am trying to find a list that shows all available snack items and where to purchase them on the Dining Plan. I understand the carts and $4 limit but I am trying to locate a list for Downtown Disney, and each park for each location what the snack choices might be in order to make the most of this feature. (Don't get me wrong I can't go Disneyland here in Ca without getting a Mickey bar, but 10 days straight is a few bars too many even for me).

Thanx as always for expert advice and info."

Alain writes:

"Hi John,

Do u think Disney accommodates belated Birthday celebrations? Taking my daughter in December for her 11th Bday but we arrive at WDW 2-3 days after her BDay... (the trip is her BDay surprise). I`d love for them to celebrate her but I wonder if they would if it isn't her BDay that exact day. What do you think? Thanks."

Beth, our travel agent, writes:

"No one cares that it isn't the exact day. These days about all they do is leave a card with a photo signed from Mickey with a Happy B'day message. Some resorts also leave a balloon. (Never at AKL, though, for the safety of the animals.) When she enters their first park she can go to Guest Services (or City Hall in the MK) and request a birthday badge. Her daughter can wear that the whole trip and they will all do special things for her in the parks."

Alain wrote back:

"John and Beth: Excellent and very informative reply. Thank you both! :-)"

Nominations Open Throughout September for 2009 Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Teens from across the country with big dreams and aspirations can be nominated during September to be part of the Disney’s Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey class of 2009. One hundred high school students will be selected from among those nominated to participate in the academy Feb. 12-15, 2009, at Walt Disney World Resort.

An event created to inspire and enrich high school students, Disney’s Dreamers Academy will include workshops with Disney cast members and executives, sessions with entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and time to enjoy the Disney theme parks - where participants can see, first-hand, the results of people who turned their dreams into careers as "Disney dreamers." The student participants will learn about careers in everything from culinary arts to animation, set design and show production to the business of sports and more.

During the inaugural Disney’s Dreamers Academy in January 2008, some of the guest speakers were Chef Jeff Henderson, National Football League Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, pop/R&B recording artists Fantasia and Keyshia Cole, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and, of course, syndicated radio personality Steve Harvey.

The Disney’s Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be made up of teens nominated between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2008. Young dreamers - who must be enrolled in high school for the 2008-09 term - can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations - even themselves. Although a high GPA is not required, students must exhibit a desire to learn, perhaps needing only additional motivational support to excel. Nomination forms can be found at www.SteveHarvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy.

A select panel of judges including Steve Harvey, community leaders and Disney representatives will choose the 100 finalists. The Disney’s Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be announced in November 2008.

"We received more than 3,000 nominations for the first Disney’s Dreamers Academy in 2008," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Due to that incredible response, we’re really looking forward to continuing the academy in 2009."

Harvey said Disney’s Dreamers Academy "is about inspiring our young people who oftentimes don’t have the chance to be exposed to a variety of job skills and job opportunities and meet with people in the fields they’re interested in. We want to give our young achievers the tools to become overachievers - to make their dreams a reality." (Source: Press Release, 08/18/08)

New Ultra-Interactive Attraction at Epcot Immerses Walt Disney World Guests In the High-Tech World of Disney’s Kim Possible

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Epcot guests at Walt Disney World Resort will be treated to a brand new, highly interactive attraction inspired by Disney Channel’s Emmy Award-winning animated series, Disney’s Kim Possible. The new experience is slated to premiere in late 2008.

Using the latest technology, Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure invites guests of all ages to become secret agents, teaming up with members of Team Possible to save the world from various comical villains and their mad inventions.

As guests embark on this international adventure, they will receive an official "Kimmunicator," at kiosks throughout Epcot. The interactive, handheld device is designed to help them maneuver through the mission. Using state-of-the-art technology, the interactive device connects guests with a variety of Kim Possible characters who provide clues to stop villains from taking over the world. The highly interactive devices also allow guests to control top-secret equipment hidden inside the World Showcase pavilions, creating an ultra-interactive adventure jam-packed with mystery and excitement.

Guests can play Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure in seven of the World Showcase pavilions: Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Japan, France and United Kingdom. Each pavilion features a unique mission including distinctive visual events and a different super villain from the animated series.

"Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure is an exciting new experience that offers fun and excitement for the entire family," said Jim MacPhee, Epcot vice president. "We are constantly exploring new ways to provide immersive experiences to Epcot guests, and this new offering will add to our dynamic portfolio."

"Today’s emerging generation expects more immersive, personal and interactive experiences in every facet of their lives, including their entertainment choices," added Bruce Vaughn, chief creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering. "As leaders in family entertainment, Disney theme parks push the envelope by combining state-of-the-art technology with creative storytelling to enhance the overall Disney vacation experience."

Epcot is a place of innovation, imagination, human achievement and endless possibilities. The park encompasses two "lands" of discovery: Future World, a showcase of new ideas and technology, and World Showcase, a kaleidoscope of nations celebrating cultural heritage, arts and entertainment. For more information, guests may call 407/824-4321 or visit disneyworld.com.

Disney’s Kim Possible World Showcase Adventure will open at Walt Disney World Resort during "The Year of a Million Dreams" celebration.

A worldwide hit for kids and families, Disney's "Kim Possible" is an Emmy Award-winning animated series from creators/executive producers Bob Schooley and Mark McCorkle and Walt Disney Television Animation. It tells the story of an average high school cheerleader, Kim Possible, who, in her spare time, happens to save the world from super villains. With the aid of her enthusiastic pals, this contemporary heroine is capable in ways few high school students ever imagine. On the flipside, she realizes that defeating the bad guys comes easier than coping with the typical teen pressures of schooling and socializing. Viewers' connection to "Kim Possible" led to a successful off-TV franchise for The Walt Disney Company including Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable characters at Disney Parks & Resorts, DVDs, books, video games and Disney Consumer Product's line of "Kim Possible" branded products available at mass retailers nationwide. Disneyland Hotel ‘Character Quarters’ Keep The Magic Alive

Anaheim, Calif. - When it comes to magical vacation experiences at the Disneyland Hotel, it’s character that counts. That’s why the famous resort hotel, located next to Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure parks, is now featuring the opportunity to book Character Quarters - connecting rooms for children that are specially themed with Mickey Mouse or Disney princess décor.

Character Quarters are standard, smaller guest rooms that have a connecting door adjacent to a standard guest room. By reserving Character Quarters and a standard guest room, guests can guarantee connecting rooms, which are ideal for families traveling with younger children. (Character Quarters cannot be booked without a connecting standard guest room.)

Each Character Quarters room features a themed television set and two twin beds. The Mickey Mouse-themed quarters have flat screen televisions, floor-to-ceiling Mickey décor, furnishings, fixtures and amenities that match the rich, blue carpeting with lively "hidden Mickey" swirls and bright golden stars.

The Disney princess-themed rooms offer furnishings fit for royalty. The rooms are beautifully adorned with carpeting, wall coverings, Cinderella comforters and other amenities fit for a princess.

"The all-new Character Quarters allow our guests to immerse themselves in character magic typically only found in our theme parks," said Tony Bruno, vice president of Disneyland Resort Hotels.

The Disneyland Hotel is the only hotel where guests can stay the night completely surrounded in the world of Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, extending the magic of their experience at the Disneyland Resort.

Best Of Both Worlds: Hannah Montana's Miley Cyrus To Celebrate ‘Sweet 16’ Birthday And Honor Youth Volunteers At Disneyland Bash

ANAHEIM, Calif. - When the world’s most popular teenager turns "Sweet 16," it’s cause to celebrate. And when that teen is Miley Cyrus - star of Disney’s "Hannah Montana" - there’s no better place to celebrate than at a Disney Park.

To honor the occasion and Miley’s philanthropic passion, Disneyland Resort in California has created "Miley’s Sweet 16 - Share The Celebration," an unforgettable event for Miley and her fans that also will serve to recognize Youth Service America and help drive awareness of the need for youth volunteerism.

The Hollywood-style bash is planned for Sunday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 11 p.m., with ticket sales limited to 5,000 fans.

Tickets, priced at $250, go on sale at 9 a.m. PDT, Saturday, Aug. 30, at www.disneyparks.com/miley.

For Miley, the birthday bash is a once-in-a-lifetime event and she plans to make new Disney theme park memories during the evening. "I only turn 16 once, so it’s going to be an awesome party with my favorite rides, hanging out with friends, fireworks and more," she said. "I’ll even get to sing a couple songs."

The evening will celebrate Miley’s career as a Hollywood Records solo musical artist and as the "secret pop star" she portrays on the wildly popular Disney Channel series, "Hannah Montana."

Miley’s Sweet 16 at Disneyland will feature a medley of party elements, large and small, that will allow guests to join in the celebration of Miley’s magical milestone. Special Party Zones will highlight the music and fun of Miley and Hannah Montana with themed activities and entertainment. Some of Miley’s favorite attractions will be open in each Party Zone, and the party will end with a bang as fireworks fill the Disneyland sky.

Sharing the Celebration with Youth Service America

In addition to all the birthday fun, Miley’s Sweet 16 will shine a spotlight on Youth Service America, an organization that seeks to improve communities by increasing the number and diversity of young people, ages 5 to 25, serving as volunteers. (For more information, visit www.YSA.org.)

In keeping with Miley’s passion for youth volunteerism, Disney Parks will make a significant contribution to Youth Service America.

With the organization’s involvement in "Miley’s Sweet 16 - Share The Celebration," Miley said she hopes that other young Americans will be encouraged to volunteer in their own hometowns.

"The best part of the party is we’re going to recognize some really cool kids from Youth Service America who are giving back to their community," she said. "That’s so awesome because I think it’s really important for kids like us to volunteer."

For More Party Information

For ongoing information about "Miley’s Sweet 16 - Share The Celebration" party at Disneyland Park in California, as well as details on how to obtain tickets, fans may go to www.disneyparks.com/miley for details. (Source: Press Release, 08/21/08)

Disneyland Half Marathon Runners Travel A Magical Course Through Disneyland Resort And The City Of Anaheim

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Disneyland Resort is celebrating health, fitness and family fun with more than 18,000 participants who registered for the third annual Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, August 29-31. The highlight of the weekend is a 13.1 mile event affectionately dubbed "The Happiest Race on Earth."

Participants in the Disneyland Half Marathon will travel a course unlike any half marathon in the world. It passes through the two Disneyland Resort theme parks - Disneyland and Disney’s California Adventure - and it’s full of Disney inspiration with flaming cannons at the start, live entertainers all along the route, and Disney characters as cheerleaders. Many of the participants will be dressed like their favorite Disney characters, including Minnie Mouse and Tinker Bell, and some even stop mid-race to pose with Mickey Mouse and his pals for photos commemorating both the race and Disney Parks’ ongoing Year of a Million Dreams celebration.

In three and one-half hours or less, runners will pass Disneyland icons such as Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn, and they will also pass Anaheim landmarks such as the Honda Center, Angel Stadium of Anaheim and the Anaheim Convention Center before finally crossing the finish line in the Downtown Disney District.

The Disneyland Half Marathon has become a popular road race for its flat loop course and mild climate, ideal for personal best times. Hosted by the Disneyland Resort and the City of Anaheim, it reached registration capacity in July. More than 13,500 runners are scheduled to participate in the Half Marathon on August 31, and 5,000 participants will be competing in the Family Fun Run 5K and Kids' Races on August 30, with participants from all 50 U.S. states and 16 countries.

"We are excited to welcome guests from all around the country to the third annual Disneyland Half Marathon," said Ed Grier, president of the Disneyland Resort. "By joining together with the City of Anaheim and other partners, we are able to provide participants with a unique race around the Anaheim Resort Area that will benefit the Anaheim Community Foundation."

A monetary donation will be made to the Anaheim Community Foundation, the 2008 beneficiary of the Disneyland Half Marathon.

The Disneyland Half Marathon weekend is full of activities for the whole family, beginning on Friday, August 29, with the opening of the Disneyland Health and Fitness Expo. The two-day celebration of health and fitness features celebrity runner appearances and seminars on training, racing and nutrition, along with opportunities to experience the latest in running and fitness equipment. Expo hours are noon to 8 p.m. on Aug. 29, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Aug. 30.

This year’s Family Fun Run 5K celebrates the debut of Toy Story Mania!, an immersive attraction that opened in June at Disney’s California Adventure. Runners in the 5K will encounter their favorite characters from the Toy Story films, from Green Army Men marching off the start to Woody and Buzz at the finish line. Little runners (8 and under) will join in the fun with sprints, a 400-yard-dash and a Diaper Dash for crawlers.

Disneyland Half Marathon race finishers will earn a special commemorative medal depicting Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland, one in a series of Disney race-specific medals. A new award, the Disney Coast to Coast medal, will be presented to an estimated 1,000 runners who complete the 2008 Disneyland Half Marathon and who also completed either the Walt Disney World Marathon or Walt Disney World Half Marathon in January, 2008. Awarded for the first time this summer, the Coast to Coast medal showcases the iconic "Partners Statue," of Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse.

For more media information on the Half Marathon, go to www.disneyparkspress.com/halfmarathon/
The Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend builds off the successful 15-year history of Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend, which is operated by Disney’s Wide World of Sports at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. and is traditionally held in January. More than 195,000 runners, joggers and wheelchair athletes have successfully participated in the previous Walt Disney World Marathon Weekends. For more information, see www.disneyworldsports.com.

The Disneyland Half Marathon is part of the Disney’s Endurance Series, which gives recreational athletes of all ages and abilities the chance to walk, jog, run, bike and swim their way "around the world." From running marathons to road races and triathlons, participating athletes from around the (Disney) world compete to stay in shape, to achieve personal-best times and often to raise donations for charitable causes.

The next Disneyland Half Marathon will take place on Sept. 6, 2009. (Source: Press Release, 08/25/08)

Disney Cruise Line Recognized by Condé Nast Traveler as a Finalist in the Magazine’s 2008 World Savers Awards

CELEBRATION, Fla., - Condé Nast Traveler magazine recently honored Disney Cruise Line as a finalist in four categories of the 2008 World Savers Awards recognizing Disney’s commitment to community outreach and environmental conservation.

The awards honor travel companies around the world in areas of leadership and social responsibility and focus on five key categories: Poverty Alleviation, Cultural and/or Environmental Preservation, Education, Wildlife and Health.

Disney Cruise Line was named as a runner-up in the Wildlife category for their involvement with the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF) which has distributed over $11 million to fund conservation programs and engage communities in protecting wildlife in more than 110 countries. Disney was also recognized for a long-term research project in the Bahamas, where researchers are transplanting long-spined sea urchins to control algae and encourage coral reef health and sustainability.

Honorable mentions were also received by Disney Cruise Line in the Cultural and/or Environmental Preservation, Poverty Alleviation, and Education categories, sighting the company's commitment to community outreach in their ports of call. In 2007, Disney Cruise Line cast and crew members conducted over 65 volunteer projects in 19 port communities. This amounted to more than 6,000 hours of community service and support to local organizations working to make a difference in the lives of children and the environment. Additionally, an ongoing education program has engaged school children in the Cayman Islands to take an active part in preserving their local environments.

"It is an honor to be recognized as a leader in these areas," said Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin. "This award is significant for us because it not only recognizes our company's dedication to being a responsible business partner, but it also celebrates the individual efforts our cast and crew members have taken part in to positively impact the communities of the ports we visit.

The World Savers Awards were determined by 17 judges who reviewed 142 applications and selected 38 finalists to honor as the best in exercising social responsibility.

"These finalists are prime examples of how the world's hotels, airlines, cruise lines and tour operators can inspire their peers to improve our world," said Condé Nast Traveler Deputy Editor for Special Projects Dorinda Elliott.

This year is the first year that cruise lines were included in the competition. The September issue of Condé Nast Traveler magazine, now on newsstands, features the awards as its cover story. (Source: Press Release, 08/21/08)

It’s a "Suite Life" on the Disney Wonder with Disney Channel World-Premiere Event

CELEBRATION, Fla. - Disney Cruise Line will host a red-carpet, world-premiere event for the new Disney Channel original series "The Suite Life on Deck," a spin-off of the Emmy-nominated "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," on the Disney Wonder cruise ship Aug. 28-31.

During this special premiere at sea, guests sailing will experience a Hollywood-style, red-carpet arrival of some of Disney Channel’s hottest stars, an exclusive sneak-peek of the first episode of "The Suite Life on Deck" and an opportunity to participate in a Question & Answer session with stars of the show. Cast members from "The Suite Life on Deck" scheduled to appear include Cole Sprouse (Cody Martin), Dylan Sprouse (Zack Martin), Brenda Song (London Tipton), Phill Lewis (Mr. Moseby) and Debby Ryan (Bailey Pickett). All events will take place on decks 9 and 10 of the Disney Wonder on Friday, Aug. 29, at the family-friendly Goofy Pool.

"The popularity of Disney Channel shows and stars are at an all-time high," said Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin. "We’re pleased to partner with Disney Channel for this world-premiere event and share some of the red-carpet excitement with our guests, showcasing that Disney difference only Disney Cruise Line can offer."

"We’re thrilled to give "The Suite Life on Deck" a fabulous bon voyage celebration aboard the Disney Wonder. The cruise ship setting of the series made the Disney Wonder a great fit to host this event," said Adam Sanderson, Senior Vice President, Brand Marketing, Disney ABC Networks Group. A day after the world-premiere, and following a day of fun-and-sun on Disney’s private island Castaway Cay, another Disney Channel star will take the stage. Mitchel Musso, star of Disney Channel’s "Hannah Montana" and "Phineas and Ferb" will perform a mini-concert at the Goofy Pool. At the concert’s end, Musso will spend a few minutes answering questions from the audience.

This marks the first time Disney Cruise Line and Disney Channel have partnered together to develop a multi-day event. It should prove to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fans of the Disney Channel sailing on the sold-out voyage.

A leader in the family cruise segment, Disney Cruise Line offers three-, four- and seven-night itineraries to the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Land/sea vacation packages that include a stay at Walt Disney World Resort are also available.

"The Suite Life on Deck" premieres on Disney Channel on Friday, September 26 at 8p.m. ET/PT. In this new live-action comedy series, "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody," teenage twins Zack and Cody Martin, and spoiled hotel heiress London Tipton, go aboard a luxury passenger cruise liner, the SS Tipton, owned by London's father, as it cruises the world with tourists and students who attend classes at its Seven Seas High. To his delight, the dutiful Mr. Moseby is reassigned from the Tipton Hotel to be the cruise ship's hotel manager, but is quickly deflated when he finds out that Zack, Cody and London are onboard too. Joining in the hijinks is London's new roommate Bailey, a sweet, southern girl who has just left her small town roots to experience a whole new world.

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Adventures by Disney:

"When Disney first announced they were venturing into the world of escorted tours I had a hard time imagining how Mickey was going to fit down the aisle of a bus! Turns out that isn't a problem because there is nary a character to be seen on these tours. And yes, that's a GOOD thing!

Disney has proven over the last few years that they CAN compete with the best when it comes to doing guided tours all over the world. They use the very best hotels and restaurants, their guides are fabulously trained, and each itinerary makes sure that all participants will do not only the usual 'tourist' things, but also some things you'd otherwise not be able to do. (When the name Disney is attached to your company you can really work some magic!) And don't be surprised to see little gifts unexpected appearing in your room from time to time.

As you'd imagine, these tours are great for families with children, and especially so for multi-generational families. There are opportunities for the adults to have a nice dinner alone while the kids are expertly entertained for the evening, and there are activities specially planned for the kids so they don't get bored while Grandma and Grandpa tour the Louvre or attend a wine tasting. They even keep the kids happy on the bus rides!

Amazingly, though, the tours are equally good for adults traveling without children, but if you're still worried about that then you can sign up for one of the many "adults only" departures offered on many itineraries.

You all know how much I love Disney World and Disney Cruise Line, but let's face it... Sometimes even the biggest Mouse fans need to do a character-free vacation. What's great about Adventures by Disney is that you get all the attention to detail that Disney is known for, and they somehow manage to make their mark on every aspect of the trip despite the lack of large furry beasts and pretty girls in big dresses. I am so supportive of this new endeavor that I've told my sales rep that I'm aiming to be their top agent for 2009.

To that end, I've acquired a domain name for a new website and am currently working on a site that will be JUST for Adventures by Disney. In the meantime, we're trying to develop a number of promotions to run starting this fall that will be geared towards Affordable Disney readers and their friends and families. This is the PERFECT time to be planning your 2009 vacation, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to drop me a note!"

Guests Find ‘Out of This World’ Dining Experience At Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios

"Terrifying Plants" stalk the planet and "Invaders" touch down from another dimension at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, featuring favorite science fiction and monster flicks teamed with the finest drive-in food known to earthlings and aliens alike.

The Setting: On a replica of a studios soundstage, the 250-seat restaurant re-creates a 1950s drive-in theater smack in the middle of Hollywood Hills without the smog. Diners are seated in re-creations of flashy, chrome-gilded cars of old, and fiber-optic stars twinkle overhead in the night sky as all ears tune in to real drive-in speakers mounted next to each car.

All cars are facing the big screen, but guests can’t resist checking out the wheels next door. The '50s era automobiles, complete with fins and whitewalls, are painted in a rainbow of colors ranging from fire-engine red and emerald green to ice blue and metallic lavender.

The Menu: Carhops decked out in campy versions of a '50s drive-in costume take guests’ orders from a menu that’s out of this world. The food arrives from the drive-in’s "Snack Bar." "Main Features" range from smoked baby back ribs to shrimp penne pasta. No earthling could resist the lineup of desserts for all tastes, like the warm apple and pecan crisp or hot fudge sundae.

The Show: The screen comes to life with trailers from "Cat Women of the Moon," "Invasion of the Saucermen" and more. The Sci-Fi Dine-In’s film is a 45-minute compilation of the best (and worst!) of the science fiction trailers and cartoons, including segments from "It Conquered the World," "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster," "The Amazing Colossal Man" and "Missile to the Moon." USA Teams to Compete for ‘Culinary Olympics’ Spots at Walt Disney World Resort

Culinary greats will put their spatulas to the test in an elaborate cook-off Sept. 26-27 - during the opening weekend of the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival - in a quest to represent the United States at the prestigious Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest.

Eight two-person teams will turn up the heat in the kitchen at Walt Disney World Resort in the hope their culinary creations land them a top spot representing Team USA at the Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest - commonly called the "Culinary Olympics" - in Lyon, France, in January 2009.

Walt Disney World guests can attend the competition and observe the chefs performing their culinary wizardry and savor the flavors. Each of the eight teams will serve up elaborate fish and beef dishes before a live audience and prominent panel including the country’s top chefs: Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Georges Perrier, Michel Richard, Laurent Tourondel and former Bocuse d’Or USA competitors.

The eight finalists competing for a spot on the U.S. Team include:

* Timothy Hollingsworth, Sous Chef, The French Laundry, Yountville, Calif.
* Chef Hung Huynh, "TopChef" Season 3 Winner, Executive Chef, Solo, New York City
* Rogers Powell, Instructor, French Culinary Institute, New York City
* Chef John Rellah Jr., Executive Chef, Hamilton Farm, Gladstone, N.J.
* Richard Rosendale, US Culinary Olympics Team Captain, Chef/Owner, Rosendales, Columbus, Ohio
* Michael Rotondo, Chef de Cuisine, Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago
* Kevin Sbraga, Culinary Director, Garces Restaurant Group, Philadelphia
* Percy Whatley, Executive Chef, Delaware North Parks, Yosemite, Calif.

The competition at Disney culminates Sept. 27 with a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony recognizing the first, second and third place teams. The evening will feature a silent auction, live musical entertainment, dancing and a chance to meet and mingle with some the world’s top chefs, including the Gala Dinner Chefs, as well as Paul Bocuse, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the Deans of The French Culinary Institute, Alain Sailhac and Andre Soltner.

The star-studded dinner includes hors d’oeuvres, a four-course tasting menu, and a dessert reception prepared by Chefs Daniel Boulud (Daniel, New York City), Charlie Trotter (Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago), Patrick O’Connell (Inn at Little Washington, Washington, D.C.), Michel Richard (Citronelle, Washington, D.C.), Georges Perrier (Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia), Laurent Tourondel (BLT, New York City), Daniel Humm (Eleven Madison Park, New York City), David Myers (Sona, Los Angeles) and Traci des Jardins (Jardiniere, San Francisco), and will be paired with Diageo Reserve Signature Cocktails and Moët Hennessy Champagnes. The highlight of the evening will be a Dom Pérignon toast and the announcement of the Bocuse d’Or USA winning team.

The newly selected Bocuse d’Or USA team will go on to compete among 24 teams from around the world at the Bocuse d’Or World Competition in Lyon, in the gold standard event held every two years.

Tickets for the Gala Dinner are $450 per person, plus tax including gratuity, and can be purchased beginning Aug. 25 by calling 407/WDW-FEST, with proceeds benefiting Bocuse d’Or USA (a not-for-profit organization sponsoring the competitors’ training, travel and culinary education).

Throughout the six-week-long Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, Sept. 26-Nov. 9, guests can sample food and wine from around the world at international marketplaces and specialty dinners, attend seminars and wines schools and meet guest chefs. Mickey and Minnie Planning to Show off New Costume-Party Look at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Dates Beginning Sept. 5

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- When the Disney characters dress up for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this September and October, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be debuting a whole new look. Mickey has traded his scarecrow costume for stunning purple and orange eveningwear fit for a Halloween ball. Not to be outdone, Mickey's best girl, Minnie Mouse, exchanged her witch costume for a party dress to complement Mickey's attire.

For Mickey, it's a top hat and purple tails. For Minnie, it's a party dress with a purple hat with an orange ribbon -- bright and colorful, befitting the fun on 25 evenings between Sept. 5 and Oct. 31 when Magic Kingdom hosts the popular after-hours party.

Guests are invited to dress up as well for the 7 p.m.-midnight party which features two scheduled entertainment extravaganzas guests can see at no other time: the "Boo-to-You" Halloween parade and the bewitching "Happy HalloWishes" fireworks spectacular. There's trick-or-treating galore and also a chance to experience popular attractions throughout the evening.

Parties are slated for Sept. 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 28, 30 and Oct. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31. To purchase advance tickets, guests can call 407/W-DISNEY or visit disneyworld.com/halloween.
Disney Vacation 'Know-It-Alls' Can Apply for 2009 Moms Panel Sept. 8-19

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Disney Parks undertakes its search in September for a group of park-savvy parents to be named the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel, following in the footsteps of the first-ever online Walt Disney World Moms Panel which has been fielding and answering thousands of vacation questions in 2008.

The quest is for 16 parents who pride themselves on being Walt Disney World "know-it-alls" and have an undying passion to share their Disney knowledge with others at www.disneyworldmoms.com. From Sept. 8 through Sept. 19, interested applicants can visit www.disneyworldmoms.com/2009 to apply for the panel. The application process begins with a series of questions and three brief essays -- about their family, why they are a great Walt Disney World vacation planner and their favorite Disney vacationing tip.

"The first-ever Disney Moms Panel has responded to more than 9,000 questions from vacation planners this year. They have offered our guests countless tips to plan a magical vacation at our resort," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "We thank the 2008 panel for their contributions and look forward to working with a new group of parents."

Since the launch of www.disneyworldmoms.com in January 2008, the current 12-person panel has responded to questions covering just about anything from how to sign up for a character dining experience to what items are allowed in the parks.

Quick Service Dining Plan, Pirate-Themed Rooms New Choices for Walt Disney World Guests in 2009

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Guests planning vacations to Walt Disney World Resort in 2009 can choose a new Quick Service dining plan that can save up to 20 percent on dining and -- Argh, mateys! -- new pirate-themed rooms at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.

The new Magic Your Way plus Quick Service Dining is available for arrivals beginning Jan. 11, 2009. This package offers two quick service meals and two snacks for each night of a guest's stay plus a resort refillable drink mug for unlimited refills of non-alcoholic beverages at the guest's Disney resort hotel. The Disney Dining Plan is an option to vacation packages that include accommodations and Magic Your Way tickets.

For guests with a passion for pirates, the accommodations in 2009 could be at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. The resort is extending the theme park experience to the hotel room by adding a pirate theme to 384 rooms within the Trinidad South Village area. Each Pirate Room will feature ship-themed beds, buccaneer accessories and swashbuckling décor.

Additional information and arrangements are available online at www.disneyworld.com, by calling 407/W-DISNEY or by visiting a local travel agent.
T-Rex at Downtown Disney Will Take Guests on a Dining Adventure to a Prehistoric Time when Restaurant Debuts in October

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Walt Disney World guests will go on an adventure back in time to dine among the dinosaurs when T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure, A Place to Eat, Shop, Explore and Discover opens it doors by late October at Downtown Disney.

T-Rex, developed by Schussler Creative, Inc., and operated by Landry's Restaurants, Inc., features dining and retail in a 30,000-square-foot, 600-seat interactive prehistoric environment. The concept is built around water, fire and ice: Guests will be greeted with life-size animatronic dinosaurs that live among cascading waterfalls, bubbling geysers, a fossil dig site and much more.

Schussler Creative Chairman Steve Schussler, the founder of Rainforest Café and T-Rex restaurants, depicts the experience as "edutainment," noting that this "treat for all five senses" includes artifacts such as fossils -- all carefully labeled -- that are hundreds of millions of years old, carefully crafted animatronic dinosaurs, and even a meteorite found in Argentina.

A full-size skeleton replica of Argentinosaurus, one of the largest of the dinosaurs and copied from a museum specimen about 125 feet in length, looms over the entrance, joined by a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton.

The theme carries over to the menu, which features items with names such as Caesarsaurus (Caesar salad), Raptor Ribs (Asian BBQ ribs), Pterodactyl Wings (Buffalo chicken wings), Triassic Tortellini (tri-colored cheese tortellini) and Gigantosaurus Burger (think really big hamburger!).

Menu choices range from starters (appetizers, salads and soups) to pastas, burgers and sandwiches to a broad selection of entrees plus desserts. Some favorites include rotisserie chicken, fried shrimp, steaks and ribs, tarragon chicken salad sandwich, Cobb salad and "Chocolate Extinction." Guests will be able to make reservations by calling 407/WDW-DINE.

Nominations Open Throughout September for 2009 Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Teens from across the country with big dreams and aspirations can be nominated during September to be part of the Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey class of 2009. One hundred high school students will be selected from among those nominated to participate in the academy Feb. 12-15, 2009, at Walt Disney World Resort.

An event created to inspire and enrich high school students, Disney's Dreamers Academy will include workshops with Disney cast members and executives, sessions with entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and time to enjoy the Disney theme parks -- where participants can see, first-hand, the results of people who turned their dreams into careers as "Disney dreamers." The student participants will learn about careers in everything from culinary arts to animation, set design and show production to the business of sports and more.

During the inaugural Disney's Dreamers Academy in January 2008, some of the guest speakers were Chef Jeff Henderson, National Football League Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, pop/R&B recording artists Fantasia and Keyshia Cole, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and, of course, syndicated radio personality Steve Harvey.

The Disney's Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be made up of teens nominated betweenSept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2008. Young dreamers -- who must be enrolled in high school for the 2008-09 term -- can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations -- even themselves.

The Disney's Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be announced in November 2008. (Source: Press Release, 08/18/08)

Most Popular Stamp Series of All Time Makes Final Curtain Call

‘Art of Disney’ three-set series extended to five ‘stamping ovations’

Although Elvis remains king as the single most popular stamp subject of all time with an estimated 124.1 million collected, Mickey Mouse and his friends rule as the most popular stamp series with 211.5 million collected. Originally scheduled to be introduced as three sets during a three-year period, the fifth and final debut for the Art of Disney series [took] place Aug. 7...

125 million Art of Disney: Imagination stamps were printed and are available in sheets of 20 and include four stamp designs:

* Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willie. Walt Disney once said that Mickey was "created for the purposes of laughter." From the moment Walt Disney first imagined him, Mickey has been a happy reminder that a little laughter goes a long way; it’s hard to imagine the world without his familiar smile.

* Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and her helpers Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty. Everyone dreams of living "happily ever after," but not everyone has such enchanting helpers as Princess Aurora’s tiny guardians, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Despite their delightfully dithery ways, the good fairies protect the princess and help her find the true love she has always imagined.

* Pongo and one of his pups from 101 Dalmatians. Imagining a dog’s emotional life requires a brilliant creative leap, but 101 Dalmatians gives us a unique dog’s eye view of the world. In the loving bonds between Pongo and his pups, we see our own human ties brought to life - spot on.

* Mowgli and Baloo from The Jungle Book. Who could imagine a jungle as jazzy as in The Jungle Book - or a more free-wheeling, upbeat buddy than Baloo? His lighthearted relationship with Mowgli reminds us that friendship and laughter really are among the "bare necessities of life..."

BRANSON

Thousand Hills Golf Resort Gains Recognition for Quality Lodging Options, Amenities

MissouriLife magazine, which provides over 100,000 readers throughout the Show-Me State with information on Travel, Leisure, and countless other topics on a bi-monthly basis, recently featured the Branson area in a piece written by John Robinson, MissouriLife’s self titled "King Of The Road". Robinson has currently traveled 3409 of Missouri’s 3914 state roads, and recently visited the Table Rock Lake area in search of Branson lodging options in every shape and size.

Mentioned in the article were Rock Lane Lodge, where Robinson’s family used to spend summer trips when his daughters were young, Skyview Lodge, a picturesque fishing retreat, White River Lodge, a romantic getaway, Big Cedar Lodge, and Chateau on the Lake. Some of these establishments are unknown even to locals, being located off the beaten path. Robinson searched beyond the glitz and lights of Branson during his visit, to find places that truly embody the Ozark spirit.

Also featured in Robinson's article was Thousand Hills Golf Resort. Well known by the author for its golf course and golf front condos, on this trip the King of the Road found something that hundreds of satisfied guests of Thousand Hills have already discovered. Hidden amongst the trees, in a wooded area just a stones throw from Tanger Outlet Mall and Branson's most travelled road are The Cabins At Grand Mountain. These Branson Missouri cabin rentals make up some of the most highly sought-after units in the Thousand Hills Family. Unseen to those passersby who do not know where to look, the Cabins At Grand Mountain offer guests a truly unique lodging experience.

Nestled in their own secluded area, just minutes from the Hwy 76 strip, The Cabins At Grand Mountain provide guests the seclusion of a cabin in the woods, paired with the convenience of a center-city condo. Describing the cabin interiors as "downright stunning" and "decorated to the nines with beautiful appointments", Robinson highlights why the cabins have become an annual retreat for many Thousand Hills guests and their families. With fully furnished kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms with fireplaces, bedrooms with king sized beds and bathrooms with rain showers, the Cabins At Grand Mountain offer guests a luxury alternative to "roughing it".

For more information on booking your own family retreat at The Cabins At Grand Mountain, or any of the Branson vacation rentals in the Thousand Hills Golf Resort family, call 1-800-864-4145. Thousand Hills also offers golf and lake condo rentals from suites to 4 bedrooms, making it the perfect place for a romantic weekend or a vacation with the family. You can also learn more by visiting www.thousandhills.com. Log on today and start making your own family memories! (Source: Press Release, 08/06/08)

William writes:

"John if I buy tickets with no expiration with say 10 days, and use 5 this year. If I go back next year can I add back those 5 days without having to pay the no expiration rate again, or do you have to pay for it again? This would be a wonderful way to avoid the first 3 days price again. Thank you."

Sorry. Next year you would have to buy new 5-day tickets with no expiration option. Partially used tickets must be upgraded within 14 days of first use.

Beth, our travel agent, shares her thoughts on some of the comments made in last week's newsletter:

Dining at Boma in Animal Kingdom Lodge...

"I had the pleasure of staying in a concierge level room at this resort once. While I loved very American breakfast offered in the lounge, I wasn't crazy about the hors d'oeuvres around dinner time. It turns out that (as you suspected, John) African spices are an acquired taste that I - apparently - haven't yet acquired the taste for. Not surprisingly, I found dinner at Boma to be equally disappointing. Even the desserts that I'd heard so much about fell short. A friend of mine that lived in Africa for a time tells me that this is one of her favorite places to eat, so if you want 'real' African food this is the place to go. Otherwise, skip it unless you have adventuresome taste buds. There are TONS of great places to eat where you can be nearly certain you'll like the food."

Viewing Illuminations....

"Check to see which way the wind is blowing and be sure to NOT be where the wind will blow the smoke from the fireworks into your face. I learned that lesson the hard way! You cannot imagine how much smoke there is coming off the lake during those fireworks."

Adult evening entertainment...

"Don't forget about the Boardwalk area. There are several things going on over there in the evening that are a lot of fun and very much geared towards the adult crowd. The only down side is that there isn't any way to get back to your hotel late at night if you're not staying right in that area. You'd have to call a cab if you don't have a car with you. (It would be a cheap taxi ride, though.) And as John suggests, the deluxe resorts as well as Coronado Springs have lounges that get fun in the evenings. (Actually, all the moderate resorts have lounges, but Coronado's is a lot more interesting thanks to recent renovations as well as the fact that they have a convention center there that draws more of an adult crowd to that resort.)"

Note from John: I think that might be a fun way to spend several evenings - visiting a different lounge every night! I just might have to write the "Walt Disney World Lounge Tour!"
