Beth, our travel agent, writes about Adventures by Disney:

"When Disney first announced they were venturing into the world of escorted tours I had a hard time imagining how Mickey was going to fit down the aisle of a bus! Turns out that isn't a problem because there is nary a character to be seen on these tours. And yes, that's a GOOD thing!

Disney has proven over the last few years that they CAN compete with the best when it comes to doing guided tours all over the world. They use the very best hotels and restaurants, their guides are fabulously trained, and each itinerary makes sure that all participants will do not only the usual 'tourist' things, but also some things you'd otherwise not be able to do. (When the name Disney is attached to your company you can really work some magic!) And don't be surprised to see little gifts unexpected appearing in your room from time to time.

As you'd imagine, these tours are great for families with children, and especially so for multi-generational families. There are opportunities for the adults to have a nice dinner alone while the kids are expertly entertained for the evening, and there are activities specially planned for the kids so they don't get bored while Grandma and Grandpa tour the Louvre or attend a wine tasting. They even keep the kids happy on the bus rides!

Amazingly, though, the tours are equally good for adults traveling without children, but if you're still worried about that then you can sign up for one of the many "adults only" departures offered on many itineraries.

You all know how much I love Disney World and Disney Cruise Line, but let's face it... Sometimes even the biggest Mouse fans need to do a character-free vacation. What's great about Adventures by Disney is that you get all the attention to detail that Disney is known for, and they somehow manage to make their mark on every aspect of the trip despite the lack of large furry beasts and pretty girls in big dresses. I am so supportive of this new endeavor that I've told my sales rep that I'm aiming to be their top agent for 2009.

To that end, I've acquired a domain name for a new website and am currently working on a site that will be JUST for Adventures by Disney. In the meantime, we're trying to develop a number of promotions to run starting this fall that will be geared towards Affordable Disney readers and their friends and families. This is the PERFECT time to be planning your 2009 vacation, so if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to drop me a note!"

Guests Find ‘Out of This World’ Dining Experience At Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney's Hollywood Studios

"Terrifying Plants" stalk the planet and "Invaders" touch down from another dimension at the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, featuring favorite science fiction and monster flicks teamed with the finest drive-in food known to earthlings and aliens alike.

The Setting: On a replica of a studios soundstage, the 250-seat restaurant re-creates a 1950s drive-in theater smack in the middle of Hollywood Hills without the smog. Diners are seated in re-creations of flashy, chrome-gilded cars of old, and fiber-optic stars twinkle overhead in the night sky as all ears tune in to real drive-in speakers mounted next to each car.

All cars are facing the big screen, but guests can’t resist checking out the wheels next door. The '50s era automobiles, complete with fins and whitewalls, are painted in a rainbow of colors ranging from fire-engine red and emerald green to ice blue and metallic lavender.

The Menu: Carhops decked out in campy versions of a '50s drive-in costume take guests’ orders from a menu that’s out of this world. The food arrives from the drive-in’s "Snack Bar." "Main Features" range from smoked baby back ribs to shrimp penne pasta. No earthling could resist the lineup of desserts for all tastes, like the warm apple and pecan crisp or hot fudge sundae.

The Show: The screen comes to life with trailers from "Cat Women of the Moon," "Invasion of the Saucermen" and more. The Sci-Fi Dine-In’s film is a 45-minute compilation of the best (and worst!) of the science fiction trailers and cartoons, including segments from "It Conquered the World," "Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster," "The Amazing Colossal Man" and "Missile to the Moon." USA Teams to Compete for ‘Culinary Olympics’ Spots at Walt Disney World Resort

Culinary greats will put their spatulas to the test in an elaborate cook-off Sept. 26-27 - during the opening weekend of the 13th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival - in a quest to represent the United States at the prestigious Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest.

Eight two-person teams will turn up the heat in the kitchen at Walt Disney World Resort in the hope their culinary creations land them a top spot representing Team USA at the Bocuse d’Or World Cuisine Contest - commonly called the "Culinary Olympics" - in Lyon, France, in January 2009.

Walt Disney World guests can attend the competition and observe the chefs performing their culinary wizardry and savor the flavors. Each of the eight teams will serve up elaborate fish and beef dishes before a live audience and prominent panel including the country’s top chefs: Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Charlie Trotter, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Georges Perrier, Michel Richard, Laurent Tourondel and former Bocuse d’Or USA competitors.

The eight finalists competing for a spot on the U.S. Team include:

* Timothy Hollingsworth, Sous Chef, The French Laundry, Yountville, Calif.
* Chef Hung Huynh, "TopChef" Season 3 Winner, Executive Chef, Solo, New York City
* Rogers Powell, Instructor, French Culinary Institute, New York City
* Chef John Rellah Jr., Executive Chef, Hamilton Farm, Gladstone, N.J.
* Richard Rosendale, US Culinary Olympics Team Captain, Chef/Owner, Rosendales, Columbus, Ohio
* Michael Rotondo, Chef de Cuisine, Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago
* Kevin Sbraga, Culinary Director, Garces Restaurant Group, Philadelphia
* Percy Whatley, Executive Chef, Delaware North Parks, Yosemite, Calif.

The competition at Disney culminates Sept. 27 with a Gala Dinner and Awards ceremony recognizing the first, second and third place teams. The evening will feature a silent auction, live musical entertainment, dancing and a chance to meet and mingle with some the world’s top chefs, including the Gala Dinner Chefs, as well as Paul Bocuse, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and the Deans of The French Culinary Institute, Alain Sailhac and Andre Soltner.

The star-studded dinner includes hors d’oeuvres, a four-course tasting menu, and a dessert reception prepared by Chefs Daniel Boulud (Daniel, New York City), Charlie Trotter (Charlie Trotter’s, Chicago), Patrick O’Connell (Inn at Little Washington, Washington, D.C.), Michel Richard (Citronelle, Washington, D.C.), Georges Perrier (Le Bec Fin, Philadelphia), Laurent Tourondel (BLT, New York City), Daniel Humm (Eleven Madison Park, New York City), David Myers (Sona, Los Angeles) and Traci des Jardins (Jardiniere, San Francisco), and will be paired with Diageo Reserve Signature Cocktails and Moët Hennessy Champagnes. The highlight of the evening will be a Dom Pérignon toast and the announcement of the Bocuse d’Or USA winning team.

The newly selected Bocuse d’Or USA team will go on to compete among 24 teams from around the world at the Bocuse d’Or World Competition in Lyon, in the gold standard event held every two years.

Tickets for the Gala Dinner are $450 per person, plus tax including gratuity, and can be purchased beginning Aug. 25 by calling 407/WDW-FEST, with proceeds benefiting Bocuse d’Or USA (a not-for-profit organization sponsoring the competitors’ training, travel and culinary education).

Throughout the six-week-long Epcot International Food & Wine Festival, Sept. 26-Nov. 9, guests can sample food and wine from around the world at international marketplaces and specialty dinners, attend seminars and wines schools and meet guest chefs. Mickey and Minnie Planning to Show off New Costume-Party Look at Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Dates Beginning Sept. 5

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- When the Disney characters dress up for Mickey's Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this September and October, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be debuting a whole new look. Mickey has traded his scarecrow costume for stunning purple and orange eveningwear fit for a Halloween ball. Not to be outdone, Mickey's best girl, Minnie Mouse, exchanged her witch costume for a party dress to complement Mickey's attire.

For Mickey, it's a top hat and purple tails. For Minnie, it's a party dress with a purple hat with an orange ribbon -- bright and colorful, befitting the fun on 25 evenings between Sept. 5 and Oct. 31 when Magic Kingdom hosts the popular after-hours party.

Guests are invited to dress up as well for the 7 p.m.-midnight party which features two scheduled entertainment extravaganzas guests can see at no other time: the "Boo-to-You" Halloween parade and the bewitching "Happy HalloWishes" fireworks spectacular. There's trick-or-treating galore and also a chance to experience popular attractions throughout the evening.

Parties are slated for Sept. 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 28, 30 and Oct. 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31. To purchase advance tickets, guests can call 407/W-DISNEY or visit disneyworld.com/halloween.
Disney Vacation 'Know-It-Alls' Can Apply for 2009 Moms Panel Sept. 8-19

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Disney Parks undertakes its search in September for a group of park-savvy parents to be named the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel, following in the footsteps of the first-ever online Walt Disney World Moms Panel which has been fielding and answering thousands of vacation questions in 2008.

The quest is for 16 parents who pride themselves on being Walt Disney World "know-it-alls" and have an undying passion to share their Disney knowledge with others at www.disneyworldmoms.com. From Sept. 8 through Sept. 19, interested applicants can visit www.disneyworldmoms.com/2009 to apply for the panel. The application process begins with a series of questions and three brief essays -- about their family, why they are a great Walt Disney World vacation planner and their favorite Disney vacationing tip.

"The first-ever Disney Moms Panel has responded to more than 9,000 questions from vacation planners this year. They have offered our guests countless tips to plan a magical vacation at our resort," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "We thank the 2008 panel for their contributions and look forward to working with a new group of parents."

Since the launch of www.disneyworldmoms.com in January 2008, the current 12-person panel has responded to questions covering just about anything from how to sign up for a character dining experience to what items are allowed in the parks.

Quick Service Dining Plan, Pirate-Themed Rooms New Choices for Walt Disney World Guests in 2009

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Guests planning vacations to Walt Disney World Resort in 2009 can choose a new Quick Service dining plan that can save up to 20 percent on dining and -- Argh, mateys! -- new pirate-themed rooms at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort.

The new Magic Your Way plus Quick Service Dining is available for arrivals beginning Jan. 11, 2009. This package offers two quick service meals and two snacks for each night of a guest's stay plus a resort refillable drink mug for unlimited refills of non-alcoholic beverages at the guest's Disney resort hotel. The Disney Dining Plan is an option to vacation packages that include accommodations and Magic Your Way tickets.

For guests with a passion for pirates, the accommodations in 2009 could be at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort. The resort is extending the theme park experience to the hotel room by adding a pirate theme to 384 rooms within the Trinidad South Village area. Each Pirate Room will feature ship-themed beds, buccaneer accessories and swashbuckling décor.

Additional information and arrangements are available online at www.disneyworld.com, by calling 407/W-DISNEY or by visiting a local travel agent.
T-Rex at Downtown Disney Will Take Guests on a Dining Adventure to a Prehistoric Time when Restaurant Debuts in October

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Walt Disney World guests will go on an adventure back in time to dine among the dinosaurs when T-Rex: A Prehistoric Family Adventure, A Place to Eat, Shop, Explore and Discover opens it doors by late October at Downtown Disney.

T-Rex, developed by Schussler Creative, Inc., and operated by Landry's Restaurants, Inc., features dining and retail in a 30,000-square-foot, 600-seat interactive prehistoric environment. The concept is built around water, fire and ice: Guests will be greeted with life-size animatronic dinosaurs that live among cascading waterfalls, bubbling geysers, a fossil dig site and much more.

Schussler Creative Chairman Steve Schussler, the founder of Rainforest Café and T-Rex restaurants, depicts the experience as "edutainment," noting that this "treat for all five senses" includes artifacts such as fossils -- all carefully labeled -- that are hundreds of millions of years old, carefully crafted animatronic dinosaurs, and even a meteorite found in Argentina.

A full-size skeleton replica of Argentinosaurus, one of the largest of the dinosaurs and copied from a museum specimen about 125 feet in length, looms over the entrance, joined by a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton.

The theme carries over to the menu, which features items with names such as Caesarsaurus (Caesar salad), Raptor Ribs (Asian BBQ ribs), Pterodactyl Wings (Buffalo chicken wings), Triassic Tortellini (tri-colored cheese tortellini) and Gigantosaurus Burger (think really big hamburger!).

Menu choices range from starters (appetizers, salads and soups) to pastas, burgers and sandwiches to a broad selection of entrees plus desserts. Some favorites include rotisserie chicken, fried shrimp, steaks and ribs, tarragon chicken salad sandwich, Cobb salad and "Chocolate Extinction." Guests will be able to make reservations by calling 407/WDW-DINE.
Disney Cruise Line Recognized as a Top Cruise Experience by Readers of Travel + Leisure Magazine

CELEBRATION, Fla. -- Disney Cruise Line continues to receive top honors in the cruise industry, most recently being recognized in Travel + Leisure magazine's "2008 World's Best" awards. The annual "World's Best" list, which recognizes the best in travel for cities, hotels, islands, airlines, cruise lines, tour operators, safari outfitters and car-rental agencies, ranked Disney Cruise Line No. 3 in the "Large-Ship" cruise line category. The ranking was determined by readers asked to rate cruise lines on cabins, food, service, itineraries, destinations, activities and value.

"We are delighted to be recognized in the Travel + Leisure "2008 World's Best" awards as one of the top three large-ship cruise lines and the highest ranked cruise line catering to the family market," said Tom McAlpin, president of Disney Cruise Line. Nominations Open Throughout September for 2009 Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Teens from across the country with big dreams and aspirations can be nominated during September to be part of the Disney's Dreamers Academy with Steve Harvey class of 2009. One hundred high school students will be selected from among those nominated to participate in the academy Feb. 12-15, 2009, at Walt Disney World Resort.

An event created to inspire and enrich high school students, Disney's Dreamers Academy will include workshops with Disney cast members and executives, sessions with entertainment celebrities and professional athletes, and time to enjoy the Disney theme parks -- where participants can see, first-hand, the results of people who turned their dreams into careers as "Disney dreamers." The student participants will learn about careers in everything from culinary arts to animation, set design and show production to the business of sports and more.

During the inaugural Disney's Dreamers Academy in January 2008, some of the guest speakers were Chef Jeff Henderson, National Football League Hall of Famer Kellen Winslow, pop/R&B recording artists Fantasia and Keyshia Cole, ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith and, of course, syndicated radio personality Steve Harvey.

The Disney's Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be made up of teens nominated betweenSept. 1 and Sept. 30, 2008. Young dreamers -- who must be enrolled in high school for the 2008-09 term -- can be nominated by anyone, including parents, guardians, teachers, church members, social organizations -- even themselves. Although a high GPA is not required, students must exhibit a desire to learn, perhaps needing only additional motivational support to excel. Nomination forms can be found at www.steveharvey.com/disneysdreamersacademy.

A select panel of judges including Steve Harvey, community leaders and Disney representatives will choose the 100 finalists. The Disney's Dreamers Academy class of 2009 will be announced in November 2008. (Source: Press Release, 08/18/08)

Most Popular Stamp Series of All Time Makes Final Curtain Call

‘Art of Disney’ three-set series extended to five ‘stamping ovations’

Although Elvis remains king as the single most popular stamp subject of all time with an estimated 124.1 million collected, Mickey Mouse and his friends rule as the most popular stamp series with 211.5 million collected. Originally scheduled to be introduced as three sets during a three-year period, the fifth and final debut for the Art of Disney series [took] place Aug. 7...

125 million Art of Disney: Imagination stamps were printed and are available in sheets of 20 and include four stamp designs:

* Mickey Mouse as Steamboat Willie. Walt Disney once said that Mickey was "created for the purposes of laughter." From the moment Walt Disney first imagined him, Mickey has been a happy reminder that a little laughter goes a long way; it’s hard to imagine the world without his familiar smile.

* Princess Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and her helpers Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather from Sleeping Beauty. Everyone dreams of living "happily ever after," but not everyone has such enchanting helpers as Princess Aurora’s tiny guardians, Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather. Despite their delightfully dithery ways, the good fairies protect the princess and help her find the true love she has always imagined.

* Pongo and one of his pups from 101 Dalmatians. Imagining a dog’s emotional life requires a brilliant creative leap, but 101 Dalmatians gives us a unique dog’s eye view of the world. In the loving bonds between Pongo and his pups, we see our own human ties brought to life - spot on.

* Mowgli and Baloo from The Jungle Book. Who could imagine a jungle as jazzy as in The Jungle Book - or a more free-wheeling, upbeat buddy than Baloo? His lighthearted relationship with Mowgli reminds us that friendship and laughter really are among the "bare necessities of life..."

BRANSON

Thousand Hills Golf Resort Gains Recognition for Quality Lodging Options, Amenities

MissouriLife magazine, which provides over 100,000 readers throughout the Show-Me State with information on Travel, Leisure, and countless other topics on a bi-monthly basis, recently featured the Branson area in a piece written by John Robinson, MissouriLife’s self titled "King Of The Road". Robinson has currently traveled 3409 of Missouri’s 3914 state roads, and recently visited the Table Rock Lake area in search of Branson lodging options in every shape and size.

Mentioned in the article were Rock Lane Lodge, where Robinson’s family used to spend summer trips when his daughters were young, Skyview Lodge, a picturesque fishing retreat, White River Lodge, a romantic getaway, Big Cedar Lodge, and Chateau on the Lake. Some of these establishments are unknown even to locals, being located off the beaten path. Robinson searched beyond the glitz and lights of Branson during his visit, to find places that truly embody the Ozark spirit.

Also featured in Robinson's article was Thousand Hills Golf Resort. Well known by the author for its golf course and golf front condos, on this trip the King of the Road found something that hundreds of satisfied guests of Thousand Hills have already discovered. Hidden amongst the trees, in a wooded area just a stones throw from Tanger Outlet Mall and Branson's most travelled road are The Cabins At Grand Mountain. These Branson Missouri cabin rentals make up some of the most highly sought-after units in the Thousand Hills Family. Unseen to those passersby who do not know where to look, the Cabins At Grand Mountain offer guests a truly unique lodging experience.

Nestled in their own secluded area, just minutes from the Hwy 76 strip, The Cabins At Grand Mountain provide guests the seclusion of a cabin in the woods, paired with the convenience of a center-city condo. Describing the cabin interiors as "downright stunning" and "decorated to the nines with beautiful appointments", Robinson highlights why the cabins have become an annual retreat for many Thousand Hills guests and their families. With fully furnished kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms with fireplaces, bedrooms with king sized beds and bathrooms with rain showers, the Cabins At Grand Mountain offer guests a luxury alternative to "roughing it".

For more information on booking your own family retreat at The Cabins At Grand Mountain, or any of the Branson vacation rentals in the Thousand Hills Golf Resort family, call 1-800-864-4145. Thousand Hills also offers golf and lake condo rentals from suites to 4 bedrooms, making it the perfect place for a romantic weekend or a vacation with the family. You can also learn more by visiting www.thousandhills.com. Log on today and start making your own family memories! (Source: Press Release, 08/06/08)
