Beth, our travel agent, writes about dining at Biergarten in Epcot’s Germany pavilion:

"YUM!

When traveling with children and a vegetarian, sometimes finding a good place to eat can be a challenge. You do, after all, want to make everyone happy. But we were looking for a good place to do lunch for Valentine’s Day, and making the reservations about a week in advance. Not a lot to choose from! We settled on the Biergarten in Epcot’s Germany pavilion. It turned out to be a great choice. We showed up 20 minutes before our priority seating time and were given a pager. We headed next door to check out the shops and the pager went off exactly on time.

I’m not really sure why we had to wait because there were many empty tables, but I suspect it could have something to do with the fact that this is a buffet and they don’t want it to get overly crowded around the food. If so, the system works well because we never had to wait behind more than one or two people. We were seated with a nice family of four at a long table, and our server quickly came by to take drink orders. Soft drinks, beer, and wine are included in the price.

The salad bar area is a little small, but everything was tasty and there was plenty for the vegetarian in the group. Next stop was the bread basket which included short 'soft pretzel' sticks to die for. Then came potato and leek soup which was so good that I had to ask for the recipe. Even the kids liked it! Entrees included a variety of schnitzel and wurst and plenty of sauerkraut as you’d expect, but also salmon, chicken, and assorted other options. The sides included roasted potatoes, a few types of spatzle, hot potato salad - and even mac n’ cheese for the kids. The dessert selection was ample and heavenly. In short, all members of our group had no problem eating to capacity and then some, and loving every mouthful.

The entertainment was a small group of musicians in lederhosen playing traditional German instruments. The kids were fascinated by the alpine horns. We were all too busy eating to get up at the invitation to polka around the dance floor, though. (We couldn’t move by that time anyway.)

This is also one of the most reasonably priced dining options (aside from counter locations) that you can find in Epcot. Lunch runs until 3PM and is only $20 for adults and $10 for kids. A few more entrée options come out for dinner and the price increases to $33 for adults and $14 for kids, so come for a late lunch for a real bargain. Just be sure to check over your bill carefully before paying… The child with us was charged as an adult and we were ALL charged a premium, apparently an upcharge for the Valentine’s Day holiday which was never mentioned during the booking or check-in process, so the $75 lunch ended up costing us $111. Ouch! That’s what I get for letting someone else sign for me while I’m in the bathroom."

Roland writes about the article posted in issue #515 about Allegiant Air moving two of its flights from Orlando-Sanford International Airport to OIA:

"Hey John, I live in Maryville TN and we use Knoxville TYS airport. When Allegiant Air announced in 2006 that they were moving into TYS we immediately booked a Disney trip for the week of our sons 2007 spring break. We were a bit hesitant when we saw that Allegiant flies to Sanford SFB instead of MCO which would mean we'd need to rent a car. The drive from SFB to Disney takes about an hour no matter which way we go so we have to take that into account.

Allegiant Air has great partner rates with Alamo so our air and car price was a lot cheaper than any other flight direct to MCO and using Magical Express. Their flight goes direct from TYS to SFB and takes about an hour and 20 minutes. So for Allegiant Air to go directly to MCO will be FANTASTIC since I won't have to drive or bother with getting a rental. However, since we've been getting rentals we have become used to having ready transportation and not having to wait on the buses in the heat.

Last year AirTran came back to Knoxville and since they go to MCO I suspect that has helped to encourage Allegiant Air to start going to MCO, at least for our routes. It has also helped to keep Allegiant Air prices down and has caused other airlines to keep their prices a bit lower. Only Allegiant Air and AirTran have direct flights to Orlando from Knoxville so I doubt we'll ever see a good deal from the big boys. Now if we could just get Southwest into TYS..."

Thanks for the feedback, Roland. You're right. Sanford is not far from Disney. That's where we get off the autotrain. Having a car sure gives you more freedom. We'll keep our eye on Southwest!

Jennifer writes about Pollo Campero replacing McDonald's at Downtown Disney and her recent housekeeping and dining experiences at Walt Disney World:

"I wanted to comment on the Disney to close it's downtown Disney McDonald's and being replaced by Pollo Campero. We have them here in MD and I have to say, we've tried them 5 times to give them a fair shot, and they were horrible. The chicken was dry but very greasy and the facilities in both restaurants was not taken care of.

Also, we just got back from Disney World today and wanted to let everyone know that they are currently training a whole lot of new employees. While at Cosmic Ray's Cafe to eat, I literally was in line 20 minutes before having someone come over and take over for the poor new girl who did not know what she was doing. I felt bad for her, because she did not have anyone with her during prime lunch hour to help her, resulting in the 20 minute wait. Every time she messed up an order she'd had to find someone to go find the manager who would come over fix it, then leave only to have it repeated again. We don't mind when there is a new person training, but I really think they needed to have someone with her during the lunch time crunch. We had a trainee during check-in and she had someone with her to help her.

One other thing I noted was that the housekeeping staff isn't as good as it used to be at Pop Century, where we stayed. The first day, after making the bed, they left the top coverlet laying crumpled on the floor and never gave us new towel animals and I had to call twice to get my son's bday card to the room.

Also, a few dining places make a fuss over us for celebrating my son's 3rd bday and our 4th anniversary, then nothing happened at the tables. I don't expect it, but I guess I have gotten used to them bringing a cupcake or something. Chef Mickey's used to bring a 'placemat' signed by the characters, this time the lady realized it was my son's bday after we paid the check and ran over with a cupcake and said here you go....it was crowded and nice that she did remember though.

At Liberty Tree Tavern for dinner, the characters are there until Crystal Palace reopens, the wait staff seemed very rushed. Since this is our favorite restaurant, I asked the waitress if it was possible for them to bring my son a cupcake for his bday. She did, but then proceeded to say 'here' and then said something very fast and almost inaudible and plopped it on his plate and walked away.

I have to say, we love Disney and I have never, NEVER experienced the lacking service we did this time. I thought since it's not a busy time for them, we would experience the same, if not better, service we get during peak season. I know they are training a ton of new people, I can only assume once the stress of that subsides, everything will resume. We do plan on going back, but we really wanted to share this with you. I hate giving them a negative review, we did have some good times there during this past visit too. Thanks."
=================================================
Beth, our travel agent, reviews Seralogo Hotel and Suites:

"Still a Solid Choice

When there’s an option I will always suggest staying at a Disney-owned resort. For our most recent trip to Disney World, though, value resorts were only open two of the three nights we needed and were priced at over $150 a night with tax. The only place open for all three nights was priced at over $500 a night. Forget that; this was supposed to be a quickie 'cheap' trip! In fact, as I worked my way down the list of 'preferred' hotels, it because obvious that the few places that were available to arrivals on the Friday night before Presidents Day were going to be charging us as much as they felt they could squeeze us for. Ever the bargain hunter that I am, I kept looking… eventually settling on an old standby, Seralago.

I first toured this hotel many years ago when it was a Holiday Inn and thought it provided a lot of bang for your buck. At that point, many rooms had been upgraded to 'kid suites' and they were turning several more into very spacious two-room suites to accommodate eight people. Astronaut John Glenn was an original owner of this hotel when it opened in 1973, but despite its age it’s in great shape. The standard rooms have two reasonably comfy double beds, a small frig and tiny microwave, and a single-sink wash area. The small bathrooms have a tub/shower combo, and the HVAC works well. No elevators, though, and there are two floors so be prepared for stairs. Resort amenities include an arcade, restaurant, small bar, two heated pools w/ hot tub, a food court of sorts (better than nothing) and a convenience store area. Plenty of parking even when most of the 614 rooms are filled. They do provide complimentary Disney transportation, with three departures and three returns available during our weekend.

You can easily walk over to Old Town if you want some non-Disney diversion and there are a zillion other restaurants and touristy things right there as well. The drive time to Epcot is about 15 minutes. More like 20 minutes to the Transportation and Ticket Center (for Magic Kingdom access). Two thumbs up on location.

I’ve seen rates as low as $39 a night if you’re age 50+ and join the senior club. This weekend, when Disney was charging over $150 for value resorts, Seralago was charging $41 for senior club members. Standard rooms with the "for anyone” discount were $79. $59 is about average. Tax is 13%. Suites cost more, but are still reasonable. Just remember that you’ll either need to use the shuttle (and work around the stated times), or drive yourself and deal with the $14 per day Disney parking fees."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about paying for your Disney vacation:

How much and when do I need to pay?

For room-only reservations, you pay the first night plus tax within seven days of reserving the room. The balance is due on arrival and you can cancel without penalty through six days prior to arrival. You cannot add tickets or dining to this type of reservation.

For package reservations (room and tickets with optional dining) you put $200 down within seven days of reserving the space, and that’s fully refundable through 45 days prior to arrival when the balance is due - after which time there are penalties for canceling as well as change and/or document re-issue fees.

What forms of payment are accepted?

All major credit cards, debit cards, money orders, cashier’s checks, personal checks, Disney rewards points. Checks have to be mailed to Disney. All others can be done by phone.

How do I make a payment?

If you are paying by check or money order you need to mail it to the Disney lock box in Atlanta for packages or to Chicago for room-only reservations. (Be sure to note the reservation number and name and mail it to arrive at least 2-3 days prior to the due date so it’s processed in time.) You’ll see the addresses on your original confirmation. If you booked online, you can do all other forms of payment through the Disney website - or you can call Disney and do it by phone. If you booked with a travel agent you’ll need to go through your agent.

Notes…

* If using a debit card, be sure that you clear the amount with your bank first. Regardless of how much you have in your account, your bank imposes a daily limit for your protection, and you’ll need to get a special override for larger amounts.

* Payment by credit card is always most preferable. Confirmation is immediate, and you have protection from your card company if there’s a problem down the road. A debit card would be second best, followed by Disney rewards points, since the confirmation is still immediate - but you lose the protection of a credit card company. Checks and money orders would be the least preferable form of payment, but you can use them in a pinch.

* Your reservation will auto-cancel if you don’t have the deposit processed prior to the due date. A postmark prior to the due date isn’t good enough.

* Do not allow a reservation made under a promotional offer to auto-cancel for nonpayment of deposit if there’s any possibility that you might use it… There’s no guarantee that reservation can be recreated, much less at the same cost. Reservations made under full rate have a better chance at being re-done, but you still risk not being able to get the location you wanted. When in doubt, ALWAYS make the deposit. That will buy you some time and hold the dates and location that you want. You can always cancel (per the terms of your type of reservation) if you change your mind.

* Your reservation will probably NOT automatically cancel on the final payment date as long as there is at least a deposit on it; however, you cannot add insurance after the final payment due date, and cancellation and change fees will be incurred starting 44 days prior to arrival whether you’ve paid the vacation off or not. Disney has the right to cancel a reservation that isn’t paid off on time, but in my experience they will usually give you up to two more weeks beyond that date. If you’ve still not paid by 30 days prior to arrival a $100 cancellation penalty will be deducted from the amount you HAVE paid, the balance will be returned to you, and the reservation canceled."

Christina writes:

"I am looking to move to Orlando. Me and my friend Amy are from England and were currently working as singer/dancers in Macau. We have made the decision we would like our next step to be disney. We were just wondering if you could help us at all by giving us some accommodation areas to live in. We have checked out some websites already but wondered if you could give us any advice on the cheapest places and as to where the cast members of disney are staying. Thank you"
