Beth, our travel agent, writes about the balloon ride at Downtown Disney:
"Up, up and away!
One of the coolest things about being a travel agent that specializes in Disney products is that the non-Disney vendors go out of their way to get your attention. In this case, we were all given vouchers for a free ride at Characters in Flight, the helium balloon ride in Downtown Disney. This attraction opened last spring and is located near Planet Hollywood, just over the West End bridge. Adults are $16, kids (ages 3-9) are $10. We did this on a Saturday evening. The line looked short, but moved VERY slowly. It turns out that the number of people who can board each flight depends on the wind. It was quite gusty that evening, so they only took five people at a time. Once we paid, we were given boarding passes and sent over to a gate.
When the group in front of us boarded, we were let through to wait for our turn. There are just a couple of easy steps up into the balloon (which looks like a big hot air balloon, minus the flames) and a circular walkway around the 'basket.' We were told to spread out evenly and hang onto the rail for the trip up. The tether rolled off its spool rather quickly and it wasn’t long at all until we were up to maximum height (400 feet) and told we could walk around. The view up there is amazing, but you really can’t see much park-wise aside from Spaceship Earth. The view is probably better during the day - but it’s still pretty cool at night! We were only up there maybe five minutes before the descent started. The duration, start to finish, was about 10 minutes.
I’m not crazy about heights and I do get motion sick, both of which were listed as reasons to NOT do this ride, but I went anyway and was 100% fine on both counts. I should also mention that I’m a total wimp when it comes to rides… Test Track is the most daring thing I do (and I don’t enjoy it). I had no trouble with this, though, nor did the other four people (including an eight-year-old girl).
Is it worth the money? Well, it is a cool thing to do, and if you’ve never been in a balloon before it’s a good way to get the basic feel of it. There’s pretty much zero chance that you’ll float away, and it’s a great ride for nearly everyone in the family, BUT it can be a very long wait for a very short ride and I don’t really think I’ll be doing it again anytime soon if I have to pay for it. Nice to do once, not worth doing it twice."
