Cynthia writes:

"Dear John,

What do you think about the Hoop-dee-doo musical revue?
We have a 9:30 pm ADR (Advance Dining Reservation) and we’re wondering if it’s worth the late hour. What have you heard concerning this dinner show? I was told it would be a good addition to out trip, but would like and 'expert' opinion!

Thanks for your great Disney info and advice... we no longer plan a trip without you; and wonder how we managed before coming across your great newsletter and online book. God bless!"

We don't care for corn ball humor, but some do like it. You can read some reviews at:

Thank you for your kind comments. It's members like you who keep us going! God bless you, too!

Cynthia wrote back:

"We've decided to give it a try. Perhaps you need a report on the Hoop-dee-doo from someone like me, who likes a bit of the corn-ball if I'm with the right group. I'll let you
know how it goes. Thanks again!"

We'd love to publish your report! We invite all of our readers to contribute their comments to our newsletter.

Beth, our travel agent, writes about getting to Universal Studios / Island of Adventure:

"Hardly a week goes by that someone doesn't ask me about getting from Disney to US/IoA (or Sea World / Aquatica / Discovery Cove, Wet n' Wild, etc.) These are all Disney's competition so they obviously don't want to make it easy for you. It can, however, be done and you have some options. You can rent a car, take a cab, get a private driver, or take the Mears attraction shuttle.

If you rent a car you can easily get if from Alamo at the Disney Dolphin or the Disney Car Care Center. I usually have a discount code for these locations and they will come pick you up. It's easy and ultra-flexible, also giving you the chance to stop at the grocery store or elsewhere if you choose. (Hard to do if you select another transportation method.) Of course, the down sides are that you'll have to pay parking at US/IoA and there's that pesky cost of gas. It still may be the lowest cost option, though.

Calling a cab is easy enough. In fact, there are usually a few hanging around most resorts, but if not the resort will call one for you. The cost depends on traffic, but it's typically around $35-40 each way, plus a tip for the drivers. Be sure to have them quote you the price BEFORE you get going. No parking or hassling with rental pickups and returns - but you might have to wait a bit to get the cab for the return and you may have to use your cell phone to call, so be sure to get the number before you get out of the cab that takes you over.

A private driver costs about the same as a cab, but the car is usually nicer and you get more personal service. Also, it's a flat rate, regardless of traffic conditions. They have vehicles that will accommodate up to 10 people, and it costs about the same for 10 as it does for 4! Again, you have to add in a tip for the drivers, and you need to give them a time for the pick up and return you when you initially make the reservation.

Finally, there's the Mears attraction shuttle. You can call Mears to set this up (407-423-5566) or you can arrange it at one of their kiosks in the MCO airport. The cost is $16 p/p each way. Obviously, if you have more than a few people then the flat-rate option is better. Also, the shuttle has set times and isn't flexible on them."

Beth, our travel agent, writes about taking a cruise during hurricane season:

"I just finished reading a story about passengers aboard a Carnival ship that are furious over the fact that their Eastern Caribbean cruise is now taking them to - of all places - Newport, RI, instead, thanks to the approach of tropical storm Hanna. As such, I feel I need to reiterate once again that when you choose to travel during hurricane season you have to accept the fact that a certain amount of 'adventuresome spirit' may be required.

Rarely does anyone read all that tiny print known as the 'cruise contract' or 'tour contract,' but somewhere buried in all that legal stuff is a section that says that the cruise or tour operator has the right to change your itinerary and/or available activities if, in their opinion, they need to do so in order to protect you and/or their property - and they can do so for any reason, not just weather. That means that a ship's captain can choose to change the order of ports, skip ports, or even take you to somewhere else entirely. Less commonly, your cruise may be cut short or suddenly increase in length if the ship can't get safely back into port on schedule. In the case of Walt Disney World, they retain the right to close their parks and order you to your room. Whatever it takes to keep you safe.

Chances are good that you got a really great price on your hurricane season vacation. There's a reason for that, and you knew it when you booked. Of course, you probably assumed at the time that you wouldn't have to deal with bad weather - and the majority of travelers luck out. You, however, may not be among the lucky. And no, you are not entitled to a refund if that happens. If you have a problem with that concept, look into 'cancel for any reason' insurance coverage.

Admittedly, such unexpected changes can have a dramatic effect on your vacation. Cruise and tour companies are aware of that and don't take the decision to change things lightly. You need to trust your captain - or Mickey, as the case may be. They aren't making the changes to intentionally ruin your trip. Do exactly what they tell you to do - and then make the best of it. Attitude is everything when it comes to salvaging your trip."

Mickey and Minnie Planning to Show Off New Costume-Party
Look at Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party Dates, Beginning Sept. 5

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - When the Disney characters dress up for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party this September and October, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse will be debuting a whole new look. Mickey has traded his scarecrow costume for stunning purple and orange eveningwear fit for a Halloween ball. Not to be outdone, Mickey’s best girl, Minnie Mouse, exchanged her witch costume for a party dress to complement Mickey’s attire.

For Mickey, it’s a top hat and purple tails. For Minnie, it’s a party dress with a purple hat with an orange ribbon - bright and colorful, befitting the fun on 26 evenings between Sept. 5 and Oct. 31 when Magic Kingdom hosts the popular after-hours party.

Guests are invited to dress up as well for the 7 p.m.-midnight party which features two scheduled entertainment extravaganzas guests can see at no other time: the "Boo-to-You" Halloween parade and the bewitching "Happy HalloWishes" fireworks spectacular. There’s trick-or-treating galore and also a chance to experience popular attractions throughout the evening.

Parties are slated for Sept. 5, 9, 12, 16, 19, 23, 26, 28, 30 and Oct. 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 13, 16, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31. To purchase advance tickets, guests can call 407/W-DISNEY or visit disneyworld.com/halloween. (Source: Press Release, 09/03/08)

Calling All Walt Disney World Vacation ‘Know-It-Alls’: The Mouse Searching for 16 Parents for 2009 Moms Panel

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Disney Parks today announced its search for a group of park-savvy parents to be named the 2009 Walt Disney World Moms Panel, following in the footsteps of the first-ever online Walt Disney World Moms Panel which has been fielding and answering thousands of vacation questions in 2008.

The quest is for 16 parents who pride themselves on being Walt Disney World "know-it-alls" and have an undying passion to share their Disney knowledge with others at www.disneyworldmoms.com. From Sept. 8 through Sept. 19, interested applicants can visit www.disneyworldmoms.com/2009 to apply for the panel. The application process begins with a series of questions and three brief essays - about their family, why they are a great Walt Disney World vacation planner and their favorite Disney vacationing tip.

"The first-ever Disney Moms Panel has responded to more than 9,000 questions from vacation planners this year. They have offered our guests countless tips to plan a magical vacation at our resort," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "We thank the 2008 panel for their contributions and look forward to working with a new group of parents."

Since the launch of www.disneyworldmoms.com in January 2008, the current 12-person panel has responded to questions covering just about anything from how to sign up for a character dining experience to what items are allowed in the parks. In exchange for serving up their Disney expertise online in 2009, the expanded, 16-person panel will each receive a 5-night, 6-day vacation at Walt Disney World Resort for four people.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of being on the Walt Disney World Moms Panel has been the opportunity to use my travel experiences in ways that help other families plan the most magical vacations ever," said Darcie Maranich, a panelist and mother of four from Vail, Ariz. "I encourage anyone who has valuable pointers for vacation planning to apply - for me, it is a dream come true being a part of the Moms Panel, and I look forward to the information the next round of panelists will share."

About the Walt Disney World Moms Panel

Launched in January 2008, the Walt Disney World Moms Panel is an online forum where guests can get insider tips and insights for vacationing at Walt Disney World Resort from real moms who have mastered the art of planning a Walt Disney World vacation. The 2008 Walt Disney World Moms Panel consists of 12 real parents selected to share their vast knowledge of the resort and personal secrets of success with other families who are considering a trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. Guests can pose questions and have them answered by the panelists, as well as gain access to other valuable park insights and vacation planning tools - including a new online "How-To" video series featuring homemade videos from the panelists sharing their favorite Disney vacation tips. TAMPA, Fla. - Busch Gardens Tampa Bay kicks off it’s ninth season of gut-wrenching scares with the launch of the Howl-O-Scream 2008 website, RavenTwins.com, and the introduction of exciting new VIP Fear Tour packages, horrifying new haunted houses, and the new faces of evil itself - the lovely Raven Twins.

NEW THIS YEAR! Howl-O-Scream 2008’s new haunted houses will tease your deepest, darkest fears like never before...

* NEW! Reconstruction: The Doctor Is In - Dr. Edger VonAngst has the skill and technology to rebuild you... but what will you become? This mad reconstructive surgeon has set up shop, putting human parts back together with mechanical pieces and combining flesh, bone and steel in the most hideous ways. Nip/Tuck was never like this!

* NEW! Death Row Vengeance - The inmates at Grey Echo Penitentiary are slated for execution, and they blame you. With their last breath, they curse those who do nothing to save them from the electric chair or lethal injection and vow to haunt those who watched them suffer. Will you make it out alive when they come back to make good on their dying promise?

Some of the most demented houses ever are back by popular demand with some horrible new twists. These returning favorites are sure to terrorize first-time visitors and die-hard fans alike:

* 13: Eat Your Heart Out - Each October, The Messengers come out of hiding to seek out 13 unlucky victims, who are tracked down and tortured according to an annual theme. In 2008, the gang feasts on flesh, and they have already claimed 12 lives. Pray that 13 is not your unlucky number.

* Taste of Blood - Once revered as undead royalty, vampires have now been forced underground into the subways and sewers to avoid the light. By day, they feed on rats to survive. But as night falls, the horde takes to the streets to seduce fresh blood.

* Trapped in the Walls - The gruesome fate of an innocent family made headlines when it happened. Years later, evil still lingers in the rooms where the tragedies happened. It has seeped into the walls, trapping dark demons and infesting a house that can’t let go of its horrible history.

* After Hours - Last Call - It’s last call at Club Muse, and your party is over. When the lights come up at the end of the night, you’ll see who has been lurking in the shadows, waiting to welcome you beyond the velvet rope and turn your V.I.P. night into R.I.P. forever.

At Howl-O-Scream, even the sidewalks aren’t safe from the things that go bump in the night. Three scare zones and all-new roaming hordes will keep guests watching their backs as they explore 335 acres of fright:

* NEW in 2008, you never know where your next scare is preparing to pounce. Just when you thought you were safe, Howl-O-Scream doubles the horror with roaming hordes of clowns, zombies, monsters and more taking their terror to the streets and sneaking up on unsuspecting victims. Who’s watching your back?

* Eternal Midnight - As the bells of the clock tower chime never-ending midnight, ghostly mourners and angry souls roam among tombstones, searching for eternal rest. The only way to be released from this earthly purgatory is to find an unsuspecting guest to take their place - trapped on this haunted hill ‘til the end of time.

* Zombie Junction - When Marie de la Mort came to town, she brought with her a dark plague that poisoned the townspeople as they slept. But the dead didn’t stay buried for long. Now, this little town is overrun with hordes of flesh-eating ghouls who prey upon anyone unlucky enough to wander into Corncob Junction.

* Wicked Woods - In this grim fairy tale, you’ll never live happily ever after. The trees reach out to grab you, and the hideous creatures that hide in their bewitched branches are starting to get hungry. You’d better move quick" your "once upon a time" is about to run out.

After braving bone-chilling coasters in the dark such as SheiKra, Montu, Gwazi and Kumba, you can catch your breath at three twisted live shows:

* NEW! One Wild Night - When a young couple breaks into an abandoned wax museum to steal the perfect costumes, they find themselves at the mercy of the true spirits of Halloween. With "Trick" and "Treat" as their witching-hour escorts, the couple soon learns that it only takes one wild night to change your life forever.

* NEW! Killer Klownz - All the world loves a clown, but these bloodthirsty bozos are a different breed" and they want you to join them. Just try to escape as the Killer Klownz reach out into the audience to draw you into their sinister spectacle and turn you into one of their own.

* Fiends - Is there a doctor in the house? These captivating creatures of the night will infect you with dance fever and keep your pulse pounding with their deranged dance party. But when Dr. Freakenstein’s naughty nurses start operating, the diagnosis is always "code pink."

NEW THIS YEAR! Take advantage of the best way to see Howl-O-Scream by bundling an exclusive V.I.P. Fear Tours with your admission ticket. Fear Tours offer three levels of terrifying special treatment, featuring no-wait access to haunted houses and chilling thrill rides, reserved show seating and more. And if there’s one thing worse than being terrified, it’s being terrified on an empty stomach. Fright Feast is the most deranged dinner show in town, featuring a full buffet of monstrous main courses and devilish desserts, plus an exclusive performance of the all-new Desert Grill show, Sweet Dreams. Then, Fright Feast guests are the first to brave the dark with a half-hour of early access to all-new haunted houses. Fright Feast is $22.95 per person, with group rates and discounts for annual Passport members available.

Hong Kong Disneyland Launches "Art of Animation"
to Inspire Imagination

A rare behind-the-scenes peek at the origins of Disney's stories

(HONG KONG) - Parents and children can now embark on a stimulating artistic journey through the world of Disney animation, as Hong Kong Disneyland presents the "Art of Animation" set to inspire creativity in Guests of all ages.

Celebrating the classic Disney and Pixar stories and characters that have delighted children and adults alike, Guests will gain a better understanding of Disney animation, from past to present - from the creation of the beloved Mickey Mouse to The Incredibles.

Guests' fantastic voyage will culminate in the form of a colorful life size Zoetrope, which demonstrates the fundamentals of animation in an innovative and whimsical way. The first of its kind in Hong Kong, the Zoetrope is set to bring exhilarating and electrifying experiences to Guests.

"The Walt Disney Company possesses the flawless ability to tell classic and moving stories that have inspired creativity in generations of children," said Maple Lee, Vice President, Marketing, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort. "The 'Art of Animation' is at its core, the history of animation within the company, and how we have taken from sketches and artwork, to combine all of these elements to create great characters, stories, movies and entertainment offerings."

Featuring characters from "Toy Story" and "Toy Story 2", the Zoetrope which is situated inside the new attraction, is a simple mechanism that creates the illusion of movement by presenting a continuously changing series of images - actual 3-D figures - on a spinning disk. Through a flashing strobe light a sense of motion is created as the figures spin around.

Maple Lee added, "Watching the Zoetrope in action is a mind-blowing experience, as the Toy Story characters come to life right before your very eyes. It is an entertaining demonstration of what Walt Disney once described as, 'Animation can explain whatever the mind of man can conceive.'"

The moment Guests enter the "Art of Animation", they will be surrounded by conceptual artwork from the late 1920s to the present. Guests will be able to further their knowledge of how animation is created at Disney, which is the basis for many of the attractions and entertainment offerings at Disney theme parks around the world.

The "Art of Animation" is filled with maquettes, storyboards and background paintings of Disney Characters. The attraction is divided into Mickey and Friends; the Golden Age of Animation featuring films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty; the Renaissance of Disney Animation featuring films such as The Little Mermaid and Aladdin; and the Next Generation featuring films such as Toy Story and Ratatouille.

The "Art of Animation" is located beside "Animation Academy" in Town Square and is open during regular Park hours. The combination of the all-new "Art of Animation" and "Animation Academy" offers a unique corner in which young guests can step into the enchanted world of animation; from learning the fundamentals of animation to a step by step tutorial on drawing beloved Disney Characters.
