Kim writes:

"John,

I am trying to make dining reservations that don't interfere with SpectroMagic, if possible. There is only availability at Liberty Tree at 8:50pm. Magic Kingdom is scheduled to close on this day at 11pm, so I assume that it will run twice, but I don't know. I'm not exactly sure of the parade route and I can't really place the location of Liberty Tree in Liberty Square. (We've never eaten there.) Any chance of seeing the parade from there? What about from the Crystal Palace, if that's available? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We are traveling with friends who will be experiencing Disney for the first time. Thanks so much!"

>> The SpectroMagic Parade usually runs at 8 and 10 PM when the park stays open later. You'll need a window seat at the Crystal Palace to see it as it runs along Main Street; and a window seat at Liberty Tree Tavern to see it as it makes
its way through Frontierland. Unfortunately, you'll only be able to see it in the distance. The best view is from the outside tables at Tony's Town Square restaurant at Town Square Exposition Hall.

Kim wrote back:

"Thanks for the quick response. I had thought about Tony's, but I was afraid that people would crowd and stand in front of the tables. Does anyone guard against that? I also have a couple other questions. I know that everything is subject to change, but do you have any idea of Fantasmic showtimes the first week of September (the park closes at 8pm most days and closes at 10pm one day and also has extra magic hours that day).

Again, I'm trying to make the best dining arrangements. So far, we have 50's Prime Time @ 8:55pm on the day that the park closes at 10pm (potentially 1am with the extra magic hours) and reservations at Sci-Fi @ 8:30pm on the day the park closes at 8pm ). I just want to make sure that we see Fantasmic once, even if it means changing or canceling one of the reservations. Also, we've never been to the Prime Time; is it worth it? (I mean the hassle of scheduling your day around dining reservations.) Again, thank you so much for all your input."

>> Here's the Disney Hollywood Studios calendar.

Fantasmic runs 8:30 and 10 PM on longer nights.

Tony's outside eating area is elevated and inaccessible to those without reservations. You should be able to see the parade from the tables just fine.

We haven't personally eaten at 50's Prime Time, but many love the waitresses pretending to be mom.

Beth, our travel agent, writes about Disney tickets:

"This may seem like very basic information to nearly everyone that reads it, and yet there still seem to be a few people around that aren't completely familiar with how Disney tickets work. I thought maybe it's time to do a simple review...

Adult tickets are needed for ages 10 and up, child tickets for ages 3-9 and NO TICKETS for children under the age of 3. They go by the age you are when you arrive.

All Disney tickets start as 'base' tickets. That is, they are good for admission to one - and only one - of the four theme parks* for each of those days. You can go to Magic Kingdom one day and Animal Kingdom the next, but not both in the same day. That's called 'park hopping' and you have to add on the 'hopper' option to be able to do that. The cost for adding hopping is $47.93 per ticket, regardless of ticket length or age of the ticket holder.

If you want to be able to enter Disney 'non-theme park' places (water parks, etc.) then you can consider adding the Water Parks Fun n' More (WPF&M) option. The cost is $53.25 per person, regardless of age or ticket length. You get one admission for each day of theme park entry in your main ticket. For instance, a 7-day ticket (base or hopper) would get you 7 days of WPF&M admissions; a 10-day park ticket would get you 10 WPF&M admissions. The admissions are good for the water parks, Pleasure Island, Disney Quest, and Wide World of Sports. You cannot hop between those places, even if you have added the park hopping option. (Hopping privileges apply only to the four theme parks.) You can come and go into the same place more than once in a day, but entering a different place will use another WPF&M admission.

All tickets expire 14 days from first use unless you pay for the No Expiration option. The price for that depends on how many days you had to START with, not how many you have left over that you want to save. It gets expensive to make longer tickets non-expiring.

Do you NEED hopping, WPF&M and/or No Expiration? Well, that depends on your situation and to get into it is a whole different topic. You can email if you have questions about your personal needs, though.

Keep in mind that tickets now have your finger scan encoded into them after first use so you cannot share your ticket with anyone else. Tickets are nonrefundable, but most can be upgraded to more high-powered tickets as long as you do so while the original ticket is still valid.

One note about ticket discounts... Yes, they exist. Florida residents, annual pass holders, and military personnel can get discounts and have (in the case of FL residents) access to some special tickets that aren't available to anyone else. If you're part of a group or convention you can also get discounted tickets. Many AAA clubs sell tickets at a small discount. Some wholesalers also sell at a discount - but be sure to use a reputable wholesaler like Affordable Disney's ticket agent.

And remember that your best shot at a promotional offer is when booking a package and they all come with tickets, so if you run out and buy discounted tickets you may have to forego a promotional package offer (or shell out to buy very expensive 1-day base tickets for everyone in order to get it). My advice is always to NOT purchase discounted tickets until you are 100% certain that there won't be a package deal out that will work for you."

* The theme parks are Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios. The water parks, miniature and regular golf, DisneyQuest, Pleasure Island, etc. are NOT considered theme parks and require separate admission for entry.

SeaWorld Orlando Announces New Mega-Attraction Coming In 2009

-- Manta, Ride The Flying Ray --

ORLANDO Fla. SeaWorld Orlando announced today the next generation of SeaWorld thrills with Manta -- a new mega-attraction which will seamlessly transition guests from the awe of encountering rays in underwater flight... into the sensation of actually being one. Swooping over sea and sky, Manta will inspire riders with amazing underwater animal habitats, then soar them face-down, in a horizontal position, aboard a manta-inspired flying coaster. Manta opens summer 2009.

The Manta flying coaster will create a new level of immersion into the animal world -- in a way only SeaWorld can do -- enveloping riders in a sensation of oneness with the ocean’s most powerful and graceful creature as they soar, dive and plummet through the air.. and at times within inches of the sea.

The journey begins the second guests enter a mythical village filled with artisan-created engravings and artwork that celebrate ray legend and lore. No ordinary queue line – the attraction starts with the first step inside. Anticipation builds as guests wind through caverns adorned with ray-inspired art in marble, jewels, and mosaics, all hand-created and left behind by artists who were moved to pay tribute to the beauty, grace and intrigue of these animals.

Whether guests choose to ride or not, the attraction is a world unto itself. Floor-to-ceiling windows create mesmerizing face-to-fin encounters with 300 rays, as well as thousands of fish and mysterious creatures native to oceans all over the world. Shark rays, spotted eagles rays, leopard rays, cownose rays, and oscillate river rays float past guests with fluidity and grace in a view new to SeaWorld. Enhancing the feeling of awe, elaborate lighting, sound and rushing waterfalls further submerge guests into this underwater universe.

The experience then evolves from seeing ... to being.

Inspired by the underwater flight of these powerful creatures, guests will fly face-down, in a horizontal position, underneath the belly of a coaster train shaped as a giant manta. With a wing span of 12 feet, the giant manta will soar over sea and sky in the most graceful flying coaster ever created.

Gliding, swooping and diving up to nearly 60 mph, through four inversions on 3,359 feet of track, riders will feel as if they are a ray, taking flight effortlessly from sky to sea -- so close at times that the Manta’s wings skim the waves.

"This ride is uniquely SeaWorld," said Dan Brown, Vice President and General Manager of SeaWorld Orlando. "SeaWorld is famous for connecting guests with the sea and its amazing creatures, and Manta does this in a way that has never been done before, creating a true sense of oneness between human and animal.

"The sensation of Manta also will be like none other in the world - guests will be inspired by the grace and power of live rays, then feel as if they, themselves, are gliding through air and water," said Joseph Couceiro, Chief Marketing Officer for SeaWorld’s parent company, Busch Entertainment Corporation. "No one but SeaWorld can unite thrills and ocean animals into such a unique experience."

The 7-acre, 140-ft tall attraction will be located inside the main entrance to SeaWorld, and become an icon in the park with its unique design. Towering over SeaWorld’s 200-acres, the manta-themed coaster - cloaked in hues of dark purple, ultramarine blue, and cobalt - will lure guests into the world of the mysterious ray.

SeaWorld is working with the renowned Swiss coaster design company, Bolliger & Mabillard for the design of Manta. (Source: Press Release, 05/29/08)

Meet the curious Turtle Crush from Finding Nemo at Hong Kong Disneyland

A new, totally unique and personalized interactive experience that entertains all ages

(HONG KONG) - "Turtle Talk with Crush"... a new addition to the attractions launched in 2008 at Hong Kong Disneyland [is now open]. Starring Crush, a "totally tubular" 150-year-old sea turtle from the Academy Award winning Disney / Pixar blockbuster Finding Nemo, this fun experience will give guests the chance to engage in live, spontaneous conversation with the animated sea turtle.

Set in a cool and indoor "digital underwater" environment, Crush will talk "turtle" with guests in English, Cantonese and Putonghua (available in mid-June) to find out more about the human world for his son, Squirt.

Available only during the summer until mid-August, Hong Kong Disneyland will bring guests an immersive story-telling experience through Disney's imagination and innovation. Crush will playfully chat, play and joke with guests as he encourages adults and children alike to interact together.

"Crush talks about how his son never stops asking questions and he himself also gets inspired to become more curious, even though he has been living for so long," said Dave Vermeulen, Managing Director, Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

"In this new attraction, we hope our guests will walk away with the fun of always asking questions - the magic key that opens the door to a world of creativity and imagination."

Using digital projection and voice-activated real-time animation, Crush engages everyone in the audience in delightful one-on-one improvised conversations and helps them to discover the wonders of his underwater world. He is eager to share the details of his sea turtle life, little known facts about marine life and of course the joys of being a parent.

This is just a glimpse of the summer fun to come! Back by popular demand, Mickey's WaterWorks will once again be providing "splashtastic" fun to keep guests wet and cool. With the searing summer heat, Mickey and his pals have taken on the task of keeping the landscape at Hong Kong Disneyland lush and beautiful. Using a variety of sprinklers, hoses and spouts, the gang is ready to water the plants - and the guests! Mickey's WaterWorks will only appear during the summer, so don't miss out.

Circle K offers easy access to Hong Kong Disneyland summer fun!
Just in time for the exciting summer season, Circle K is offering another convenient way to purchase Hong Kong Disneyland Park tickets.

Beginning May 26, 127 selected Circle K outlets will become Hong Kong Disneyland authorised ticket sales channels. Guests will be able to purchase regular and peak day tickets through these outlets at prices which are no different from the prices they would pay when they purchase tickets from other outlets. Selected outlets include those at the MTR stations, the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and the Hong Kong International Airport, Terminal 21.

Summer 2008 at Hong Kong Disneyland is going to be a dazzling, fun-filled experience. Recently launched attractions and entertainment experiences include High School Musical: LIVE!, Muppet Mobile Lab and of course "it's a small world", the beloved attraction adored by millions of guests of all generations. For more information on the upcoming summer fun, please visit our website at http://www.tokyodisneyresort.co.jp/index_e.html. (Source: Press Release, 05/28/08)

To Infinity and Beyond! Disney Parks and NASA Send Buzz Lightyear into Space

Mission Coincides with 'Launch' of New Educational Initiative and the Debut of Toy Story Mania! at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort

Cape Canaveral, Fla., -- It's a dream come true for Buzz Lightyear as Disney Parks and NASA have launched the 12-inch-tall action figure "to infinity and beyond!" Buzz Lightyear blasted off aboard Space Shuttle Discovery on mission STS-124 May 31. Liftoff from Kennedy Space Center was at 5:02 p.m. ET.

With the spectacular launch, Buzz's dream of going "to infinity and beyond" finally became reality. With the help of the crew, he will fly in zero gravity inside the International Space Station as part of NASA's "Toys in Space" initiative. Through this program, Buzz will help introduce fun elements from space into science and math classrooms across the country.

With Buzz launched the aspiration of millions of school children who dream of space travel. STS-124 coincides with the kickoff of the Space Ranger Education Series -- part of NASA's "Toys in Space," an educational program for teachers and students. The program builds on NASA's educational goals of encouraging students to pursue studies in science, technology and mathematics (STEM) subjects, which are vitally important in sustaining U.S. economic competitiveness and technological leadership.

Developed by Disney and NASA, "Toys in Space" features materials for educators to download and integrate into their classroom curriculum as well as online, educational games linked to each key component of the mission. The series, hosted at www.nasa.gov, will be available throughout 2008.

"NASA is excited to help students understand the science and engineering currently underway on the International Space Station," said Dr. Joyce Winterton, NASA assistant administrator for Education. "The educational games and resources from this partnership will allow students to explore the science and math behind space exploration with a beloved character."

Buzz's groundbreaking mission into space also coincides with the launch of his latest debut on Earth in Toy Story Mania!, Disney Parks new attraction that opens May 31 at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and June 17 at Disneyland Resort in California.

"The Space Ranger Education Series will give teachers an opportunity to incorporate a fun and engaging moment into the classroom with a character that children really love," said Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. "We're pleased to join NASA in creating a program that can help keep kids excited about math and science."

Buzz's Space Itinerary

Buzz will spend several months in space at the International Space Station (ISS) testing the limits of zero gravity before returning home to a hero's welcome at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida later this year. While in space, Buzz will participate in an experiment flying in zero gravity and appear in a video downlink from the ISS.

The Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-124 travels with seven astronauts to install Kibo's large Japanese Pressurized Module (JPM) and the lab's robotic arm system.

For additional information about the educational series and NASA programs, guests may visit www.nasa.gov. (Source: Press Release, 05/31/08)

Tokyo Disneyland Breaks Ground On New Cirque Du Soleil Theater Set To Open In 2008

Tokyo Disneyland has broken ground on a new theater for the performance group Cirque du Soleil.

Representatives from the Oriental Land Co., Ltd., which manages Tokyo Disneyland, and the Takenaka Corporation held a traditional ceremony to ensure safe building construction.

A Shinto priest from the Seiryu Shrine carried out the groundbreaking ritual per ceremonial protocol in front of an audience of close to 50 executives, managers, and cast members.

The theater, located near the Disney Ambassador Hotel, will open in fiscal year 2008 (coinciding with Tokyo Disneyland Park’s 25th anniversary and the opening of the new Tokyo Disneyland Hotel) and will seat about 2,000 guests.

With concept art showing a large theater with a metallic silver exterior with strong edges and angles, the theater is yet unnamed.

The Cirque du Soleil troupe will perform a new show exclusively created for this new location at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort.

The Cirque du Soleil theater at the Tokyo Disneyland Resort will be the first permanent theater dedicated to the performance group outside of North America.

The popular group, which originated in Canada, has teamed with Disney in the past to present the show La Nouba in a permanent theater at Walt Disney World’s Downtown Disney district. Cirque du Soleil shows usually feature dramatic music, extravagant costumes, and fancy acrobatics and gymnastics. (Source: Press Release, 06/03/08)
