David writes:

"Hi John,

Thanks for the news it has been an invaluable help in preparing for our last trip.

Speaking of which, having just returned from a terrific holiday, a tip for other readers.

Beware maitre d' with forked tongue:

Having so enjoyed the fireworks at Epcot before and this being a special celebration trip (double silver wedding anniversaries) we decided to save this show until the last evening and if possible book a dinner table.
Understandably in a busy week only an early reservation was available at the Rose & Crown; but as guests we were promised would be able to stay and enjoy the show from a special area. Hmmm, after repeated requests we were allowed onto the lower deck - because it was closed for service due to the rain.

Making the best of it, we dried off the seats and all seven of us huddled under the umbrella. Five minutes later to be told the umbrella had to be folded because it was obstructing the view from the upper deck. So there we sat, too late to find anywhere else, wet and to be honest a little disappointed at such lack of sympathy - especially for 'guests' who just paid over $200 for dinner!

Keep up the good work."

Happy Anniversary! You received very poor treatment after having spent so much. If I were you, I'd contact Disney about this and see how they respond. Here's the form:

Let me know what they say. Thanks for writing and for your encouragement.

Theme Park Fans, Beverage Industry Experts Cheer Disney World

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The fans and experts have had their say, proclaiming Walt Disney World Resort the home of both the best ride and best libations in the country:
# The Twilight ZoneTM Tower of Terror at Disney's Hollywood Studios was recently voted "Best Ride in America" by users of Theme Park Insider Web site (www.themeparkinsider.com). Theme Park Insider Editor Robert Niles said users cited the attraction's "addictive random drop sequences, which reward repeat riders with unique experiences" as a contributing factor to the win.
# Walt Disney World Resort was honored with two Cheers Awards for Beverage Excellence by Cheers Magazine, a leading beverage industry trade publication. Top honors were bestowed in "Best Chain Overall Beverage Program" and "Best Chain Signature Drink" for the Blue "Glow-Tini." (Source: Press Release, 04/14/08)

Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground Gets a Facelift!

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- An outdoor adventure that has been a favorite with Walt Disney World guests since 1971 is receiving some enhancements. As part of a resort-wide renovation project, on now, changes are coming or already in place across the 700 acres of Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground.

"Over the last 37 years, the average length of an RV has increased by 27 feet," says Fort Wilderness spokesperson Darcy Cormier. "Many feature 'slide outs' that mechanically extend from the sides of the vehicle."

To address the needs of today's larger vehicles, an intensive effort will widen and lengthen the concrete parking pads while maintaining privacy and tranquility provided by natural vegetation. A new "Premium" campsite will be available that features extra large concrete pads for larger vehicles -- also upgrades to existing amenities such as picnic tables and grills.

The main pool at Fort Wilderness will be enhanced with a themed water slide, hot tub and children's wet play area. The pool's deep end has been made shallower.

Nestled in the woodlands, the resort's 409 Wilderness Cabins feature brand-new furniture, carpeting, fixtures and linens -- plus a fresh coat of paint. Each spacious cabin features more than 500 square feet of air-conditioned living space as well as a private patio deck with a charcoal grill and picnic table. The master bedroom sleeps four with a full-sized bed and set of bunk beds, while the separate living room sleeps two with a full-sized pull-down bed. All cabins also feature vaulted ceilings, color cable television, DVD player, telephone and a spacious oval dining table. Daily housekeeping service is provided to all Wilderness Cabins.

"With all of the comforts of home, the Wilderness Cabins are perfect for guests who want to wind down in a tranquil, relaxing atmosphere after a fun-filled day at the theme parks," said Jean Gallagher, general manager of Fort Wilderness.

Fort Wilderness has always been the pet-friendly choice for guests to Walt Disney World Resort, and now dogs are getting a playground of their own at the newly opened Waggin' Trails Dog Park, an off-leash play area.

Of course there is plenty of recreation for humans, too, including horseback riding, fishing excursions, nature trail exploration, boat rentals, volleyball, tennis, bike rentals and the new Wilderness Back Trail Adventure, where guests can experience, first-hand, a Segway X2 Personal Transporter. Guests can unwind on a white sand beach, play a leisurely game of shuffleboard, take the little ones on a pony ride or enjoy an evening horse-drawn wagon ride around the resort.

Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground is located in the Magic Kingdom resort area on the banks of Bay Lake. Convenient boat transportation to Magic Kingdom and motorcoach transportation to all Walt Disney World destinations, including Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom, is provided.

For more information, or to make reservations at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground, visit www.wdwcamp.com or call 407/WDW-CAMP. To book the two-hour guided Segway X2 experience, contact 407/WDW-TOUR. (Source: Press release, 04/14/08)

Legendary Actress And Esteemed Author Julie Andrews Honored At Disneyland Resort

In beloved recognition and gratitude for her service as Honorary Ambassador of Disneyland’s 50th anniversary celebration, Disneyland Resort Cast Members today presented legendary star Julie Andrews with a unique dedication that will forever ensure her place in Disneyland’s storied history.

This dedication shines in a most appropriate place, on King Arthur’s Carrousel in Fantasyland. The Carrousel was one of the 15 Disneyland attractions that were "goldenized" in 2005, in honor of the "Happiest Homecoming on Earth" celebration for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary. Jingles, the lead and most popular horse on the attraction, was painted gold for Disneyland’s special milestone and Julie was photographed with the horse during the festivities. To acknowledge Julie’s role as an honorary cast member, Disneyland Resort has given Jingles a magical makeover and is dedicating the cherished horse in her honor.

Carrousels have a special meaning at Disneyland as Walt Disney had a fond appreciation for them and included carrousels in many of his biggest and most notable endeavors. As a father, he took his young daughters to ride merry-go-rounds on many weekends and those happy and memorable times were the seed of his dream called Disneyland. Julie Andrews’ association with carrousel horses dates back to the classic 1964 film, "Mary Poppins," and her lead role as the magical nanny. During one escapade, Mary Poppins embarks on a "horse race" with the two young children and her friend Bert. With a little bit of luck - and stunning visual effects - their carrousel ponies break free and gallop through the countryside. The movie won five Academy Awards - including one for Julie Andrews - spawned the cheerful song "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!," and left a sentimental spot forever in the hearts of movie-lovers worldwide.

Since Jingles’ 2005 golden transformation, the popular carrousel horse now dons a new and hand-painted, colorful jewel-tone palette. Special features have been added to honor the screen legend, including embellishments of gold leaf horseshoes, flowers representing Julie’s love of gardening and Mary Poppins’ themeing on Jingles’ enhanced golden saddle. Hand-painted features on the saddle include Julie’s initials, the number "50" representing Disneyland’s 50th anniversary, Mary Poppins’ boots and a flying silhouette of the beloved Mary Poppins character. Golden, wooden jingle bells also adorn the horse’s body.

Disneyland Cast Members also presented a miniature, one-of-kind replica of Jingles for Julie. The commissioned, hand-carved wood piece stands nearly 2 ½ feet tall and wears a special broach that is a replica of the custom-made Disneyland Ambassador pin that Julie received for being an Ambassador for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary.

While at Disneyland for the unveiling ceremony of Jingles, Julie signed copies of her new autobiography "Home: A Memoir of My Early Years" for Cast Members and Guests. In her new book, the critically-acclaimed writer shares numerous personal photos and anecdotes of her time on Broadway, including stories of performing in "My Fair Lady" with Rex Harrison and in "Camelot" with Richard Burton; her first marriage to famed set and costume designer Tony Walton, with whom Julie gave birth to daughter Emma; her meeting with Walt Disney, and her departure for Hollywood.
