NEWS FROM AROUND THE "WORLD"

WALT DISNEY WORLD

This Day in Disney History
--------------------------------
Disney is in the process of removing its MGM Logo at MGM. The MGM lion is gone from the archway at Animation Court and the "Earful" water tower has been repainted. "The park's new logo dumps MGM's lion and replaces it with the torso, arms and head of Mickey Mouse, who is holding a filmmaker's clapboard amid some simple, brown lettering that gives the whole image a retro-Hollywood look." (Source: Orlando Sentinel, 12/31/07)

Carolyn writes:

"Here is a story that I wanted to share with you. My 17 year-old daughter is a senior in high school and had requested to spend her 'spring break' vacation at Walt Disney World during the holidays. We were there from December 16 - 21.

Prior to leaving home her 10-year-old dog began acting ill. This wasn't too much of a surprise since every time her dog, Bailey, saw a suitcase she would become sad and not eat for a couple days. On December 17 my daughter and I were standing in front of the Christmas tree at EPCOT waiting for the tree lighting. My husband called and said that he had taken Bailey to the vet and she was very sick. They had to put her to sleep.

Of course, this was emotionally overwhelming. We stepped back away from the crowd while my daughter cried. At that time a Disney Cast Member came and asked what was wrong and if there was anything she could do to help. Once I explained what happened she shared a story of her dog and said she understood. A few moments later the same Disney Cast Member returned with a stuffed Pluto dressed for the holidays and gave it to my daughter. I was preoccupied at the time and did not get the cast members name which I regret. I would love to let her know what a difference she made in helping to heal my daughters heart. My daughter's only comment was, 'this is why I love Disney World.'"

Thank you, Carolyn, for sharing your story with us. Many of us know how hard it is to lose a pet. Disney can be proud of the way the castmember went out of her way to make your daughter feel better.

Don writes about his Christmas vacation at WDW:

"Good morning, Beth,

I just wanted to let you know that we had an absolutely delightful time with our Disney vacation! Thank you very much for all of your help in making the arrangements. Everything went as smooth as silk! Only change I would make next time would be the time of year that we visit. December 25 and 26 were difficult days in the parks for someone like me with a little discomfort in large crowds.

We recommend you and the Affordable Disney service often.

Once again, many thanks!"

Thanks again, Don, for your generous comments!

Disney’s Wide World of Sports Unveils 11th Edition of Atlanta Braves Spring Training at Champion Stadium

Braves to Battle the Rival Mets, Tigers, Cardinals, Dodgers and Others During Spring Training at Walt Disney World Resort in 2008

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (Dec. 20, 2007) -- The Atlanta Braves will battle several key rivals during the 2008 Major League Baseball Spring Training season at Champion Stadium at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. After two weeks of workouts, the Braves will play a 16-game home schedule that includes marquee clashes with the Mets, Tigers, Cardinals and Dodgers at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, the leading venue for amateur and professional sports in the country.

Braves pitchers and catchers report Feb. 14, marking the beginning of the 11th year the Braves have come to Walt Disney World Resort for spring training. Position players arrive Feb. 19, with the first full-squad workouts on Feb. 20.

After opening the spring schedule with an exhibition game against the University of Georgia on Feb. 27, the Braves begin their major-league schedule against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Feb. 29. The Braves continue their tradition of hosting the St. Louis Cardinals in back-to-back games, March 9-10, marking the sixth consecutive year the teams have faced off in a two-game spring series. The National League Central's Houston Astros visit Champion Stadium on three occasions, March 2, 8 and 23.

Last season's American League Central division winner, the Cleveland Indians, visit on March 12 and March 21. Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex will also play host to the American League's Detroit Tigers on March 7 and 20, and Tampa Bay Rays on March 15.

The Braves host three of their division rivals, including the reigning National League East champion Philadelphia Phillies on March 4. The Washington Nationals visit for a pair of dates, March 11 and 26, and the New York Mets conclude the Braves' spring training slate at Champion Stadium with a March 27 appearance.

Individual game tickets for the Braves' home spring training season go on sale Saturday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. through Ticketmaster (407/839-3900 and www.ticketmaster.com) and at the Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex box office. Prices range from $14.50 (general admission lawn seats) to $23.50 (lower reserved).

Information on the Braves' spring training season, group tickets and mini-packs is available by calling 407/939-GAME (4263) and online at www.disneysports.com. The popular mini-packs will include both three-game and five-game options in 2008 and are currently on sale, giving fans their first opportunity to purchase tickets to specific games on the Braves' 2008 spring training schedule. Fans may also purchase Atlanta Braves Spring Training travel packages through Spring Training USA. Travel packages include Braves game tickets, accommodations at Walt Disney World Resort and other benefits. Information is available online at www.springtrainingtours.com.

Elsewhere Around the Vacation Kingdom...

Spectacle of Dancing Lights Brightens Disney-MGM Studios -- The Streets of America backlot again will sparkle brightly as millions of twinkling lights dancing to music illuminate the area Nov. 12 through Jan. 6, 2008, during the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights presented by SYLVANIA. Amid "Florida snow" flurries, the building facades, trees and streets of the Disney-MGM Studios backlot dazzle with three-dimensional and motion-based displays -- some originally created at the Osborne home in Arkansas by businessman Jennings Osborne as a holiday display for the delight of his daughter.

After the Arkansas home exhibit grew larger and brighter over the years, the million-light display was transported to Disney-MGM Studios in 1995, where the spectacle continues to grow larger and brighter each year. Some of Osborne's original creations still sparkling brightly at the park today include dozens of flying angels and Santa Claus light designs.

Holiday cheer continues with the daily "Hollywood Holly-Day Parade" decked with favorite Disney characters in their holiday best, parading down Hollywood Boulevard.

Disney's Animal Kingdom Decked for the Holidays -- Celebrate safari style as Disney's Animal Kingdom is wilder than ever this winter season. Mickey and his pals rejoice in traditional holiday music with a world beat twist during the daily "Mickey's Jingle Jungle Parade," from Nov. 12-Jan. 6, 2008. At Camp Minnie-Mickey, guests can meet Disney characters dressed in their holiday best or enjoy carolers performing seasonal classics at Santa Goofy's Holiday Village. The village is decorated with Christmas trees and features live entertainers and holiday photo opportunities. (Source: Press Release)
