OTHER CRUISES

15 nights Barcelona - Galveston December 8-23, 2007
Inside cabins from $859 per person + govt taxes/fees

Beth writes: "OK, so you have to do a little flying and it's rather last-minute, but this is a wonderful ship if you like big with lots of things to do. (This is the original rock climbing, ice skating ship.) These prices won't last long, though - very limited space left in some categories."

14 nights Barcelona - San Juan December 8-22, 2007
Cabins from $599 p/p + govt taxes and fees - less if you qualify as a senior or are from certain states

Beth writes: "Again, it's short notice and some flying is involved - but that's why you collect frequent flyer miles, right?! This is a more upscale line and a smaller ship, so if rock climbing isn't your thing maybe this is a better choice. As you might guess, space is very limited.

NEED A VACATION SOON? Can you travel within 30 or 60 days? If so, ask me about the best deals in cruising. As you can see, there are some really good ones to be had!"

New Series of Photography from Annie Leibovitz Puts More Stars in More Fantasies as Disney Parks Extends ‘Year of a Million Dreams’

Framed through the lens of renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, more stars are playing out their fantasies, living out their Disney dreams.

Actress Rachel Weisz is Snow White, tennis star Roger Federer is King Arthur from "The Sword in the Stone" and actress Julie Andrews is the Blue Fairy from "Pinocchio" with actress Abigail Breslin as Fira from "Disney Fairies" in a new wave of celebrity images celebrating "The Year of a Million Dreams" at Disney Parks.

They join Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyoncé as "Alice in Wonderland" twirling in a teacup and David Beckham atop a steed as Prince Phillip from "Sleeping Beauty" in a 14-page insert appearing later this year in several Condé Nast publications. Johansson, Beyoncé and Beckham also starred in the first flight of Leibovitz images last January.

The new photographs, placing stars in classic Disney fairy tale settings, continue the "Disney Dream Portrait Series" of celebrity images produced by Leibovitz as Disney Parks announces an extension, through 2008, of its "Year of a Million Dreams" celebration.

Elaborate sets and costuming went into the transformation of Weisz, Andrews, Breslin and Federer. Soundstages morphed into pixie-dusted spectacles as Leibovitz clicked away.

"It's thrilling to have an opportunity to re-create the characters we all loved as children," Leibovitz says. "The stories are real to my own children now, and their belief inspires me."

Dreamlike images in a year of dreams was a natural, added Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

"Putting celebrities right inside their fantasies reinforces the power of dreams, where anything is possible," he said. "Disney's 'Year of a Million Dreams' is about the imaginations and dreams that are inside us all. Through the lens of Annie Leibovitz, these dreams and fantasies come alive. It's the perfect fit."

For Weisz, slipping on the familiar hair band and dress of Snow White was a dream come true. Her finished image, "Where You're the Fairest of Them All," is a soft, sylvan scene in which she is surrounded by forest friends.

"I think you always want to be Snow White, it's every little girl's dream," Weisz said.

Federer traded his tennis racket for a regal sword, posing on a rock as the gallant King Arthur.

The finished photo, entitled "Where You're Always King of the Court," shows Federer, red cape flowing, beside a roiling sea.

In another photo, Breslin as Fira (from the "Disney Fairies" series) reposes on a giant leaf while the wand-waving Julie Andrews as the Blue Fairy of "Pinocchio" showers her with pixie dust. "Where the Magic Begins," reads the photo.

The special insert will be unveiled in the December editions of Cookie, Condé Nast Traveler, Details, Glamour, GQ, Men's Vogue, New Yorker, Self, Vanity Fair, Vogue and W. (Source: Press Release)

Beth, our travel agent, recently had the opportunity to experience Princess Cruise Line's new Emerald Princess:

"Travel agents are bombarded with offers to check out hotels, cruise ships, tour companies, etc. for great rates - sometimes even for free - but, alas, most of us are rarely able to take advantage of the opportunities because it's so hard to get away. On October 26, though, I made an exception and accepted an offer from Princes Cruise Lines to spend the night aboard the new Emerald Princess while she was in wetdock in Ft. Lauderdale.

I'm a huge fan of Princess and their newer ships are all lovely, but the Emerald is really exceptional. Those who've cruised on a newer Princess ship (Grand Princess onward) would recognize many areas and instantly feel right at home. That's something that Princess prides themselves on: the details may differ, but the general layouts are all very similar. The ever-popular Sabatini's is back, but this time moved up and to the back to take advantage of the view. I attended a tasting - a sort of pre-dinner with wine - and every morsel of food I had was outstanding. I wouldn't hesitate to shell out the extra Bucks ($25 per person the last I checked) to eat there. There's a new bistro area to the buffet section in the evenings which was really very nice when looking for a late-night snack. And the International Cafe area of the atrium is just incredible. While there are nominal charges for most items, the bites that we had were well worth a dollar or two. Fans of Princess pizza (the best at sea if you ask me) will be pleased to know that it's still readily available and as good as ever.

A seemingly well-kept secret is the adults-only Sanctuary area. You access it through the spa, but there is no charge to take advantage. There's a pool where you can swim against the current, a totally peaceful (and shaded) area to relax, nap, or read, and a few massage treatment areas (suitable for couples) that look out across the bow to a breath-taking view. The spa itself is as high-tech as any other these days, and the fitness center is huge. We caught a show in the main theater (very good) as well as some comedians in a lounge. The comedians were average; we might have liked them better if we could see them, but it was packed so we were stuck sitting off to the side just listening. Princess entertainment is, in general, pretty good.

The children's areas on this ship are outstanding. Each age group has an age-appropriate zone that would keep the vast majority of children (and even teens) happy. The only area likely to disappoint is the tiny little arcade - but remind your kids you don't go cruising to sit in an arcade! It's true what they say about the Movies Under the Stars screen - you really CAN see it well during the day! It's much more fun at night, though, and Princess even offers wool blankets and popcorn to make the experience more cozy and fun. There is also a bright and lively casino aboard and many shops. Nooks and crannies are everywhere if you like sneaking off to somewhere quiet to read, and Skywalker's Nightclub is alive and well on Emerald Princess (although I do miss the escalator ride up).

Our cabin was a minisuite and it was nearly identical to the one we had on the Star Princess last spring. They're big and comfy and bright and cheery. The balconies are plenty roomy enough to enjoy a champagne breakfast or afternoon tea (both of which I can highly recommend). Standard cabins are also very comfortable and plenty roomy enough for most people. They're not huge, but are much larger than the standard cabins of ships built 15 years ago. I also checked out a penthouse suite and found it to be a disappointment. The bathroom is enormous as is the balcony, but the living area didn't seem much bigger than our minisuite... just a different layout. We were all impressed with the owner's suite, though. If you've got the money it's the way to go. If you can only afford the penthouse suites, though, save your cash and get a minisuite instead. You won't miss the big bathroom.

This ship is nearly identical to the Crown Princess which came out a year earlier in May '06 and the Ruby Princess (due out next Fall). There's something here for everyone, and if you like good food and good service you probably won't be disappointed. The ship is huge, though, so be ready to do some hiking to get around, and there are a few places that are a little hard to find even after you've spent many days on very similar ships. Still, learning a ship's layout is always part of the fun for me. While you rarely find rock-bottom pricing for Princess cruises, there are many great deals to be had which keep Princess very affordable - especially if you plan ahead. The agency I work with generally has group space on several Princess ships a month which gives clients an opportunity to get some great pricing plus some perks (onboard credits, etc.) without literally being a part of a large group. If you already love cruising, give Princess - and the Emerald Princess in particular - a try. If you haven't tried cruising yet, this would be a great place to start!"

HANESBRAND AND DISNEY PARKS FORM ALLIANCE

Hanesbrands Inc. (NYSE:HBI) and The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) today announced a 10-year strategic alliance that will tap into the marketing and product expertise of two of the world’s most trusted and recognized lineups of brands.

The alliance includes basic apparel exclusivity for the Hanes and Champion brands, product co-branding, attraction sponsorships and other brand visibility and signage at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts properties.

A giant Hanes concert T-shirt - 12 feet wide and 14 feet long - was unfurled at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith at Disney-MGM Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., to commemorate the occasion. During the event, Hanesbrands Chief Executive Officer Richard A. Noll explained that Hanes will be the presenting sponsor of the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, one of the park’s most popular attractions. Hanes will also have a customizable apparel venue in Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort that will enable guests to design and personalize their own custom T-shirts and other items.

Champion will also have naming rights for the stadium at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex, the nation’s premier amateur sports venue. In addition to Champion Stadium, there will be brand placement and promotional opportunities throughout the 220-acre complex that attracts more than 1.1 million visitors and 240,000 athletes every year. The alliance also includes in-store promotional and brand building opportunities at ESPN Zone restaurants and stores located in Anaheim, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, New York City and Washington, D.C.

"This alliance is a key component of our marketing programs to drive long-term growth and is part of our aggressive approach to building and investing behind our Hanes and Champion brands," said Noll. "Our alliance with Walt Disney Parks & Resorts, truly one of the world’s greatest brands, is a perfect fit to maximize the brand strength and equity of both organizations. In addition to becoming key parts of the consumer experience at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts properties worldwide, Hanes and Champion will execute consumer marketing and promotional outreach in the retail apparel marketplace."

The partnership gives Hanesbrands apparel lines Hanes and Champion category exclusivity for select apparel at Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, Calif., Walt Disney World Resort and Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex Stadium, both in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., and all eight ESPN Zone stores across the country.

"We have had a long-standing relationship with Hanes and Champion products and are proud to now have Hanesbrands as our newest alliance partner," said Meg Crofton, president of Walt Disney World Resort. "Our alliance with Hanesbrands is a natural given they are a leader in apparel and like us, look for strategic, innovative ways to extend their brand into communities throughout the world."

Much of the apparel will be co-labeled, including Disneyland Resort by Hanes, Walt Disney World by Hanes, Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex by Champion and ESPN Zone by Champion. Basic apparel, under the terms of the agreement, is defined as T-shirts and tanks and fleece sweatshirts, sweatpants, hoodies and other family fleece, including infant and toddler items.

"The Walt Disney Parks and Resorts alliance represents the largest marketing partnership to date for Hanesbrands and for our two largest brands, Hanes and Champion," said Kevin Hall, Hanesbrands executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "Our strategy is to focus on select, large-scale opportunities that leverage the size, strength and growth trends of our brands. We will be able to leverage our alliance with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts to create and develop additional consumer marketing and promotional programs at retail, including back-to-school and holiday programs, family vacation contests and awards, on-package messaging and in-store display. This is a marketing bonanza for Hanes and Champion. (Source: Press Release)

Renea, an Affordable Disney Lifetime member since 2001, writes:

"Hello John:

I have a dilemma maybe you can advise me on. I had a reservation at the Grand Floridian [in December] with my pass holder rate. I needed to switch weeks and lost the G.F. with the discount.

Disney was able to get the Poly with the discount for the week. I really want the G.F. though. I have been calling at least 3 times a day to see if can get the G.F. with my discount; even if it was at the beginning of our stay.

Some of the reservation people tell me the discount may go back in the system while others tell me it probably won’t go back in as a discount if someone cancels.

Do you know what the truth is? What do you think my chances are of obtaining the discount as my check in gets closer?

Thanks for your help."

My advice... Keep trying up until the last minute. Disney has been known to hold back rooms.

Renea wrote back with good news:

"I called Disney last week and their system was being upgraded so they asked me to call back in two hours. I called back within the hour and their system was up. I asked if the G.F. was available during my stay in December with my pass holder rate and to my surprise they said YES! They had the discount for the entire 9 days!

I am so happy, I am spending $364.00 more, but I love the G.F. Just wanted to let you know."

I've seen it happen many times. Just keep calling and often something opens up.

Have a great time, Renea!
