Beth, our travel agent, writes about Southwest's acquisition of AirTran:

"As many (most) people have heard by now, Southwest Airlines will acquire AirTran and be fully transitioned by early next year if the purchase is approved. The move has folks at Disney scrambling. Disney’s air department has a wonderful alliance with AirTran right now… Although there isn't anything that specifically states that AirTran is the “official” airline of Walt Disney World, anyone that’s ever spent anytime searching flights through Disney knows AirTran clearly has the edge. Disney has no such arrangement with Southwest. In fact, there’s no arrangement at all. Disney’s Magical Express services passengers from ALL airlines, both in and out of Orlando International, but you cannot purchase Southwest tickets through Disney at this point.

Southwest serves a number of markets with multiple nonstop and/or direct flights to MCO, and quite often at super-low fares. They are also famous for last-minute deals that have been as low as $29 each way (plus tax), making a quick Disney fix possible for many people. Southwest remains one of few airlines that doesn’t charge a fee for up to two checked pieces of luggage, and you can still bring a free carry-on as well. While it’s nice to book your Disney trip as a package with room, tickets, dining, and air, doing the air separately to reap all the Southwest benefits has been well worth the small hassle to most people.

Southwest seems to be one of the few remaining airlines that knows how to run such a business efficiently and at a profit. While it’s a bit of an inconvenience that they don't release flights more than six months or so in advance (compared to nearly a year in advance with other airlines), doing so helps them price fares more accurately (based on fuel pricing and current demand) and helps them avoid making multiple schedule changes to many flights… something AirTran is infamous for.

No statement has been released by Disney at this point, and it will probably be several weeks – maybe longer – before there is one. You can be certain that Disney’s Magical Express will continue to provide complimentary airport transfers to all MCO airline passengers. If you are currently holding tickets on AirTran and you got those tickets through Disney, you'll be advised by Disney or the airline (or through your travel agent) if there are any changes to your flight. If you booked with AirTran direct, the airline will contact you. Either way, if you're contacted directly by the airline and there is a change to your airline and/or flight number then be sure to advise Disney (or your travel agent) so that your Magical Express details can be updated.

Fingers are crossed that Southwest and Disney will work out a partnership that is sure to be beneficial to all concerned. Stay tuned!"
