Beth writes about choosing Disney's free dining plan vs their room discount promotion:
"Every year Disney offers a follow-up to the free dining offer that gives you a room discount instead of free food. Then everyone wants to know which is the better deal, given that you cannot combine the two. The answer is, it depends.
If you are staying at a deluxe resort then the resort savings can really add up, especially if you have multiple rooms and/or are staying for a week or more. And if you have no children, or they are under age 10, then it’s probably going to cost you less to pay for the basic dining plan and take the resort discount.
On the other hand, if you are doing a short stay, using a value or moderate resort, and/or have several people age 10 and up then the free dining offer may be the better option.
Of course, if you didn’t really want the dining plan in the first place and only took it because it was free, then the room discount stands a good chance at being the better deal – but remember that you have to eat no matter what. Figure out what you’d spend a day by paying for your meals and take that into consideration as well.
Bottom line: the only way to know for sure is to do the math… yet another reason that using an travel agent that does it for you is a great time saver. I’m spending the day 'doing the math' for everyone I have booked for these dates." :)
